I think it was supposed to read card department, which published two game lines AFAIK, Rage and Jyhad. I think both got at least one expansion, not sure though. Rage, incidentally, gave us a metis werewolf called Banana Split.

Correct, I had edited the post to fix it, but apparently QQ didn't notice that and kept the first version.

If I want to research Werewolves does anyone have any recommendations, which WoD book/version is the best start? Any other material from other settings/sources is appreciated too.

One of the core books, Player's Guide to Garou, Storytellers Handbook, Book of the Wyrm, Weaver and the Wyld.

My advice, don't try to take everything to be true. Different tribes of Garou have different legends, different beliefs and even Garou Lorekeepers aren't certain. They can't even agree on Gaia and the Triat. Furthermore, different Shapeshifters like Werelizards, Weresharks etc have larger differences in belief.

Kinda depends on what you need it for.

Do you want to play it or are you interested in the lore and metaphysics? Or do you just want a quick overview what it is all about?

Lore and methapysics firstly.
I'm not much of a help then probably, since I never really cared enough about werewolf to go any deeper into that. I guess "W20 Rage across the World" which would be my tip for a general overview would still be helpful to look at anyway (if you can get it on the cheap). Since it does provide some nice examples about what to expect in the different location when they are Wyrm/Weaver/Wyld controlled, but it doesn't really go into the meta-physics or umbra realms and stuff.

Highlight of the session tonight:

IRA Grandpa teaching the Anarch might be licks, might be ghouls, might be herd ganggoons how to make car bombs because he knew the grandpa of one of the gangers.

So, I recently stumbled on Exalted v Wod. So, if anyone here has run it, I'm curious about the experience. I have some experience with Exalted 3e, and I've played a VtM 20th one shot.

Lore and methapysics firstly.
I will also give you one last advice.
Sometimes, people have different names for the same thing or same names for the different things. This is not always true but it might screw with you in the future.
See image.

Thank you for the advice given previously. The books I found were usefull for my research. That said I'd appreciate a few second opinions.

In Warhammer Fantasy there are four main were-creature sources that we know off.

1. Those who are cursed and become their ilk. (Like the Things in the woods)

2. Those who transform using magic (Amber Wizards, Bray-Shamans etc.)

3. Those "blessed" by Chaos (the skin wolves and similiar creatures)

4. And lastly, the one I am mainly interested in those who trace their bloodlines to one of the nature gods like Ulric or Ursun.

My question is the following:

Which Werewolf tribe would serve as the best template/inspiration for those associated with Ulric, God of Survival, War and Winter (and of course wolves)? My thoughts point me towards the Red Talons, Get of Fenris and Fianna, but I would like to hear your opinions.

Silver Fang (for the attitude) and Wendigo (for the powers) would also qualify.

The Wendigo powerset is great idea.

The Silver Fang could also work although in small scale, and only in the Empire. Most werekin who did not fall to chaos in the northern portions of the Empire and some regions of Norsca usually went full "Wolf Kin" (Ulrican equivalent of Flagellants) to avoid persecution and prying eyes. Which might not mesh well with the Silver Fang's regal behaviour.

That said there is a chance some of Ulric's children integrated themselves into the more zealous portions of the nobility, and possibly do their best to carve out their territory in the Drakwald while managing to keep their gifts hidden from outsiders. Yeah that could work.

Thank you for the idea.

On a different topic, it was recommended (thank you dice) that I should inquire here if anyone knows a decent place to start looking for a group if I want to participate in (not as GM yet) WoD games.

Classic World of Darkness discord server, Roll20 (avoid all those paid ST/DM bullshit though), your local TTRPG store might have groups, your university/college Fantasy/RPG club etc.
I would avoid official Discord server, half the people there are worse than SV.

My table's a bit full with five players and my dumbass, but all I did was wander into a semi-populated general discord server, stuck around long enough to figure out if I like those people or not, and then started saying I'd ST for a VtM game.

I would expect it would be a bit harder as a player (because pretty much everyone wants to play and not ST), but it should still be doable.

But there is also the official WoD server which probably means 5th, but there should still be a Classic server. There are also discord servers for large pbp games (I honestly don't recc playing this, it's like reddit mods + overworked STs and they can be real dick bags) like Boston by Night. You might find a table there for a more targeted game.

I don't expect it to be super quick, but there are places to look.

Definitly not Red Talons - thy would be loser to Things in The Woods. Quite anti-human.
Fianna are based on Irish, not Norse.
Get of Fenris would be closest among this 3. Ulric imagery White Wolf sorta helps here. Get would be it.

Thank you for your input, and yeah the more I am reading into WoD lore the more I feel like Get of Fenris is the best template for mainline groups with outliers that embody other tribes.

The reason I thought of the Fianna and Red Talons is because of the possible Norcan lineages.

The Fianna come from the fact that the Norsii, who still lived in the general area that is Nordland are probably descended from the Albion Human Cradle (at least by my interpratation), so their traditions might have gotten mixed into the Norse motiffs that formed later down the line.

The Red Talons got brought up because even the regular "Wolf Kin" zealots can be fucking nuts (some refuse to acknowledge the classical gods like Morr, Shallya, Verena because they still look at them as new gods that did not prove their worth, even though they've been around for 2000+ years) and one can imagine how fanatical some bloodlines might have become in Norsca, considering it's greatest regular gathering of Ulricans are the Winter Throne Doomsday Cult.

There is a region there called the Ulfwerenar Mountains where I quote "many herds of Beastmen battle for control of the mountains against packs of ferocious Ulfwerenar – berserk warriors who have lost a part of their humanity to a lupine curse that now affects their bloodline" so if we stretch things a bit where others look upon it as curse/the guys who could tell where this power actually came from died might have led to the rise of a monstrous tribe who look upon Ulric's tenets of survival as "existence is the struggle to exist" and decide to kill everyone not them to prove their superiority.

Don't overcomplicate things if you don't really want/need it.

interesting, where is this quote from?

There is no shortage of weird mutant tribes anywhere in warhammer. You can of course go with that.
Though I would like to point out that Red talons are not human and never have been human. In fact, they kick out (at best) all human werewolves. They do think (on average) all civilization is evil tho and that ending Impergium was a mistake. To a degree that they developed special rituals to eat humans safely without corrupting themselves XD. They even feature in End of the World scenarios, where they decide enough is enough and go around rousing volcano spirits all along the Ring of Fire to cause volcanic winter on a planetary scale.

1. Fair enough

2. From the new interactive Old World Map lore tidbits

3. That is... interesting to know, thank you. Can I ask where is this scenario detailed?

There are in fact Ulricans that believe that Ulric is the only "real" god, and that all others are actually Daemons lying to people. This isn't unique to them, there are a similar sect of Sigmarites.
Also it's not that some people believe the Ulfwerenar are cursed/mutants, it's that most people believe that and the ones that believe otherwise either stay silent on the issue or are persecuted for their beliefs.

@vighzs I would suggest my own idea in the Warhammer idea thread, even if it's more based on a CYOA and original ideas than WoD. Mostly due to disappointment from finding a setting that was made when the internet was in its infancy and they completely skimped out on Asena and Ottoman werewolves.

But to summarize: SI gets dropped in before the foundation of the empire and gaslights everyone into believing that Skoll is a sun goddess and Ulric's lover. Filling a social niche similar to ogres in the Norther Empire but with more ranching and less technically-not-cannibalism. Unless it's beastmen.
