With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Ok is there some short of "silence" from doctor who situation we don't know about? Someone using forgetmenot like abilities to stir the usa politics maybe? Maybe with the help of a certain gaining yellow face idiot? Is that the reason it was "pushed back" so much?

it really does feel suspiciously like the entire planet has amnesia.

like something comes up and then if it's not immediately acted on in a way that affects one of a few key characters the world just forgets about it

why, it's almost like the entire setting has to fit in like a dozen heads each with their own interest, instead of several billions, or something...

Like I said last time we dealt with Smiley, this is what happens when a mass mind controller isn't put on the "he's like Mannheim but subtle!" List in a justice league PSA. But nooooo

"I mean… There's not-. Alzheimer's was well behind cancer in terms of investment, but there should still have been enough money to incentivise someone to do a trial before now. The Justice League's research agreements usually… Make things like this more prominent."
Maybe they did do a trial, and during it someone found a critical vulnerability to the technology so it got shelved.

Only that part of the information got lost during the Anti-Life.

Late at night

"Hahahahaha!"

I don't usually walk arm in arm with people, but I offered Mayan my right arm because I was honestly concerned that she might fall over if I didn't.

"Because he's-. He's sitting on the wheel… On the pole!"

Given how minbari humour works, I suspected that there was some overlap between things that humans find funny and things that minbari find funny. I just wasn't quite sure where it was.

"And-. And-. And then.. the lion tries to eat him!"

We're getting some funny looks. Not… Hostile… I think… But the minbari around us are trying to work out what's going on with her and me and they're coming up with nothing.

I pat her hand. "I'm glad that you like it."

She nods, calming down a little. "Was the author prolific?"

"Yes, though I don't think that the others… I don't think you'd find them as funny."

Though maybe the bit in The Fifth Elephant where Cheery admits that she used Dee's emotional vulnerability to perform an interrogation… I don't know. I don't think I have a handle on exactly how minbari humour actually-.

"Do minbari have comedians?"

"I don't think that we have them in quite the same way that you do. We have actors for perform comedic roles and poets who compose comedic verse, but I have watched recordings of human observational comedy and I did not understand it."

"Do you do comedic verse?"

"I… Have written such things, but not for some time. They are usually considered… Low brow. I wrote mine while I was a student… And most of them were intended to mock my fellow students."

"And your teacher?"

"I do not believe that she ever wrote comedic verse. Her main theme was shapes and organisations fit together."

I lean a little closer. "I mean, did you ever write something comedic about her."

She suddenly looks serious. Affronted, even. "Certainly not."

Hm…

Minbar guests, lend me your knowledge of linguistics.

Very well. I am curious as to what you devise.

Ah, there we are. Doesn't quite work in English, but in her language…

"The three meet,
The soldier, with a scroll,
The scribe, with a hammer,
The labourer, with a sword
Somewhere, something has gone 'boing'."

Mayan cringes, her right hand covering her mouth. "That-. Is terrible, and you should never repeat it."

And then-. Is she hyperventilating? Was it that bad?

No, that was actually pretty funny. The other minbari in here are busy laughing. I actually knew Shaal Mayan's teacher and she would have hated what you just did. The poetess is just experiencing vicarious satisfaction from your mockery of her instructor, and it is making her uncomfortable.

Okay, thank you for your reassurance.

If you could have presented it to her in person, I would consider that the end of my unfinished business.

You were willing to come back from the dead just to blow a raspberry in her face? I think the next poem might be about you.

Good! I was a comedic actor. And I will not leave your head until I have expanded my range.

Shouldn't be a problem.

"So… What sort of poetry do you do?"

"I have turned my hand to almost every form of poetry practiced amongst the minbari. Currently, I am studying the similarities in themes between species. In particular, how they express the emotion of love."

"Ah. Zamaron."

"What is 'Zamaron'?"

"The species who make these rings don't have a name for themselves. Rather, each of their… Political parties have their own names. The ones who consider love to be the primary driving emotion are called Zamarons."

"Do they also hand out rings such as yours to representatives of younger species?"

"Yeah… But… Are you married?"

"I am not. Is that a requirement?"

"They prefer to recruit widows, so… Usually."

She nods as we reach the viewing platform which provided the best view of the Basilica. At this time of night there are only a couple of other people around, and from the looks of it they're… Just finishing some sort of meditation.

"And which emotion do your sponsors consider to be the most significant?"

"They're agnostic. They'll take whatever gives them control over things. But what they got…" I raise my right fist slightly. "Are rings fuelled by avarice. 'What do you want?'"

"That seems… Self-absorbed."

"Yes, of course. But consider me. I want the ring to keep working more than anything else. So I make a deal with a bunch of dead people. If you take a deal it's because you value what you get more than what you give up, and in my case hundreds of people thought it was worth it. We don't love each other, but we're all getting what we want out of it. Members of dozens of species cooperating towards a greater end."

"You do not value love?"

"Everyone I love died two hundred years ago. I'm… Not good at creating or maintaining attachments like that. I think I'll start with a small group of friends first."

The last meditator picks up his mat and heads off.

Right.

Zeen Mataan, are you ready?

I have been ready for centuries.

Scan.

I three-dimensional image of the Basilica appears in my mind, and I get the impression that it's appeared in Mataan's as well.

What have they-!? Ugh, modernisation.

I thought we were just finishing the outside?

We are, it's just… I should have considered it. I designed the interior with the latest in interior design in mind, but things have changed.

We can come back.

No… No. This is what you have sworn to do. Let us begin.

And quickly.

"The species who make these rings don't have a name for themselves

This is confusing. They call themselves Maltusians.

Zeen Mataan, are you ready?

I'm guessing the sudden change to the temple will be considered some sort of divine act?

Delenn seemed to think that the body of that war leader disappearing could be passed off as an act of the gods, so it's possible the Minbari will think this is something similar.

"Hahahahaha!"

I don't usually walk arm in arm with people, but I offered Mayan my right arm because I was honestly concerned that she might fall over if I didn't.
Though I imagine it might get them a few odd looks from those around them, given the image of a human and a Minbari arm-in-arm. Do Minbari usually go in for such public displays of fellowship between themselves, either?

"Because he's-. He's sitting on the wheel… On the pole!"

Given how minbari humour works, I suspected that there was some overlap between things that humans find funny and things that minbari find funny. I just wasn't quite sure where it was.
Though some things probably don't cross cultural divides well. Slapstick, perhaps, might be a bit much for the more dignified folks, for instance.

"And-. And-. And then.. the lion tries to eat him!"

We're getting some funny looks. Not… Hostile… I think… But the minbari around us are trying to work out what's going on with her and me and they're coming up with nothing.
And hopefully deciding 'Best not to get involved', I hope.

I pat her hand. "I'm glad that you like it."

She nods, calming down a little. "Was the author prolific?"
...Ah, telling her about Terry Pratchett, eh? Let me guess: Small Gods?

"Yes, though I don't think that the others… I don't think you'd find them as funny."

Though maybe the bit in The Fifth Elephant where Cheery admits that she used Dee's emotional vulnerability to perform an interrogation… I don't know. I don't think I have a handle on exactly how minbari humour actually-.
Who knows? Perhaps some of Death's novels would tickle their fancy, with its observation of 'human' nature and the indifferent nature of the universe. Or the Guards and their clashes between justice and 'Law'.

"Do minbari have comedians?"

"I don't think that we have them in quite the same way that you do. We have actors for performing comedic roles and poets who compose comedic verse, but I have watched recordings of human observational comedy and I did not understand it."
It's a cultural thing, really. Humans do many things that seem perfectly normal, until someone points out how odd they can be.

"Do you do comedic verse?"

"I… Have written such things, but not for some time. They are usually considered… Low brow. I wrote mine while I was a student… And most of them were intended to mock my fellow students."
Reminds me of Shakespeare. For all his great tragedies and romances, he also apparently wrote a shit-ton of doggerel poetry of all kinds and his humour works, some of which is lost to history...

"And your teacher?"

"I do not believe that she ever wrote comedic verse. Her main theme was shapes and organisations fit together."
How dour.

I lean a little closer. "I mean, did you ever write something comedic about her."

She suddenly looks serious. Affronted, even. "Certainly not."
Not anything she'd own up to, naturally.

Hm…

Minbar guests, lend me your knowledge of linguistics.

Very well. I am curious as to what you devise.

Ah, there we are. Doesn't quite work in English, but in her language…
useful when you have a living database of cultural, scientific and linguistic knowledge on call.

"The three meet,
The soldier, with a scroll,
The scribe, with a hammer,
The labourer, with a sword
Somewhere, something has gone 'boing'."
Ah, playing on the three castes of Minbari society, but oddly mismatched with the tools of their trade. Indeed, something has gone 'boing' there.

Mayan cringes, her right hand covering her mouth. "That-. Is terrible, and you should never repeat it."

And then-. Is she hyperventilating? Was it that bad?
It probably flows better in Minbari.

No, that was actually pretty funny. The other minbari in here are busy laughing. I actually knew Shaal Mayan's teacher and she would have hated what you just did. The poetess is just experiencing vicarious satisfaction from your mockery of her instructor, and it is making her uncomfortable.
Ashamed of herself for laughing, but secretly happy she can?

Okay, thank you for your reassurance.

If you could have presented it to her in person, I would consider that the end of my unfinished business.
Alas, I suspect the teacher has long since left this world... At least, if Mayan's phrasing was any guide.

You were willing to come back from the dead just to blow a raspberry in her face? I think the next poem might be about you.

Good! I was a comedic actor. And I will not leave your head until I have expanded my range.
What an eclectic mix of Minbari souls. An architect, a comedian... Is the third a warrior, perhaps, for the trinity of castes?

Shouldn't be a problem.

"So… What sort of poetry do you do?"

"I have turned my hand to almost every form of poetry practiced amongst the minbari. Currently, I am studying the similarities in themes between species. In particular, how they express the emotion of love."
So, quite well-read and -practiced. And an interesting topic to focus on.

"Ah. Zamaron."

"What is 'Zamaron'?"
At least she placed it as a thing, not a person.

"The species who make these rings don't have a name for themselves. Rather, each of their… Political parties have their own names. The ones who consider love to be the primary driving emotion are called Zamarons."

"Do they also hand out rings such as yours to representatives of younger species?"
Adding to his mythology, I see.

"Yeah… But… Are you married?"

"I am not. Is that a requirement?"

"They prefer to recruit widows, so… Usually."
Not an inaccurate definition of Star Sapphires.

She nods as we reach the viewing platform which provided the best view of the Basilica. At this time of night there are only a couple of other people around, and from the looks of it they're… Just finishing some sort of meditation.

"And which emotion do your sponsors consider to be the most significant?"
Ah, I see. Trying to do the work as quietly as possible. Not sure how discreet a shining orange light making parts of the building flow into existence will be...

"They're agnostic. They'll take whatever gives them control over things. But what they got…" I raise my right fist slightly. "Are rings fuelled by avarice. 'What do you want?'"

"That seems… Self-absorbed."
Such is their nature, both Controllers and Orange Light.

A microcosm of the dream for the galaxy, really. But probably far more successful on a personal scale than a multicultural one.

"You do not value love?"

"Everyone I love died two hundred years ago. I'm… Not good at creating or maintaining attachments like that. I think I'll start with a small group of friends first."
Some of whom may end up being based out of Babylon 5, perhaps...

The last meditator picks up his mat and heads off.

Right.
Ah, good, time to start the fun.

Zeen Mataan, are you ready?

I have been ready for centuries.
Well, let's at least try to be subtle about this. Last thing they need is to have to leave under fire.

Scan.

I three-dimensional image of the Basilica appears in my mind, and I get the impression that it's appeared in Mataan's as well.

What have they-!? Ugh, modernisation.
Ah, compromises in the name of modern conveniences. Wiring for lighting and information networks, environmental conditioning, modern plumbing, that sort of thing?

I thought we were just finishing the outside?

We are, it's just… I should have considered it. I designed the interior with the latest in interior design in mind, but things have changed.
Well, given you have a powerful supercomputer at your disposal, it shouldn't take long to adjust the plans?

We can come back.

No… No. This is what you have sworn to do. Let us begin.

And quickly.
And people wake up to a noticeably different skyline...

So the legend of the unfinished cathedral grows, finished overnight apparently by ghosts. This is going to draw a lot of attention, which agencies being very interested in the 'who' and 'how' of the process. I hope they thought to fiddle with security cameras they passed to disguise their passage, or their faces are going to be very well-known in certain communities.

Oh, we're actually on Minbar now.

"Hahahahaha!"

I don't usually walk arm in arm with people, but I offered Mayan my right arm because I was honestly concerned that she might fall over if I didn't.

"Because he's-. He's sitting on the wheel… On the pole!"

We're getting some funny looks. Not… Hostile… I think… But the minbari around us are trying to work out what's going on with her and me and they're coming up with nothing.

I pat her hand. "I'm glad that you like it."

Consider yourself lucky that that's all you're getting.

I don't think I have a handle on exactly how minbari humour actually-.

...no clue who they could be talking about, but based on past reading, I'm assuming Babylon!Paul was talking about choice bits from Pratchett's work.

Yeah, get used to that, Mayan. And it appears that this particular soul is a rather recent pick, if he knew Shaal Mayans teacher personally.

You were willing to come back from the dead just to blow a raspberry in her face? I think the next poem might be about you.

Good! I was a comedic actor. And I will not leave your head until I have expanded my range.

I actually respect that. Makes me wonder how this one and Draal would get on.

"Ah. Zamaron."

"What is 'Zamaron'?"

"The species who make these rings don't have a name for themselves. Rather, each of their… Political parties have their own names. The ones who consider love to be the primary driving emotion are called Zamarons."

Understatement, and I don't think Mayan would be impressed the lengths the Zamarons went with their idea of "love".

She nods as we reach the viewing platform which provided the best view of the Basilica. At this time of night there are only a couple of other people around, and from the looks of it they're… Just finishing some sort of meditation.

"That seems… Self-absorbed."

...interesting reaction. Makes me wonder if the average minbari have even any idea what the Shadows are and what they represent. If she had any idea, her reaction would have been more...visceral.

"Yes, of course. But consider me. I want the ring to keep working more than anything else. So I make a deal with a bunch of dead people. If you take a deal it's because you value what you get more than what you give up, and in my case hundreds of people thought it was worth it. "You do not value love?"

"Everyone I love died two hundred years ago. I'm… Not good at creating or maintaining attachments like that. I think I'll start with a small group of friends first."

Taking it slow. Much better approach.

Zeen Mataan, are you ready?

I have been ready for centuries.

This is gonna be good...

I three-dimensional image of the Basilica appears in my mind, and I get the impression that it's appeared in Mataan's as well.

What have they-!? Ugh, modernisation.

...yeah, it's been centuries, some things have definitely changed in that time.

I thought we were just finishing the outside?

We are, it's just… I should have considered it. I designed the interior with the latest in interior design in mind, but things have changed.

We can come back.

No… No. This is what you have sworn to do. Let us begin.

And quickly.

I have to assume that there's at least a few Rangers watching him, their report to Delenn is going to be interesting...

This is confusing. They call themselves Maltusians.
'Matthew' seems to be being cagey about what the 'First Ones who claim to be the oldest species in the universe who gave me this magic ring' are called. Which is probably a good idea. It avoids any issues of "Maltusians? Never heard of 'em", and lets the listener draw their own conclusions.

I have to assume that there's at least a few Rangers watching him, their report to Delenn is going to be interesting...
Well, Delenn doesn't become Entil'Zha until much later, but I suppose she would still be the logical reporting point.

(...relatedly I don't think we know who 'Ranger One' is at this point. The Anla'Shok weren't introduced in the series until S2...)

Well, I guess that answers the question of how much effort he's going to put into doing things the right way.

None!

Not unless a member of the Grey Council shows up and covers for Matthew.

Or Matthew goes around altering the data from every monitoring system the Minbari have that should pick up his matter transmutation.

Delenn seemed to think that the body of that war leader disappearing could be passed off as an act of the gods, so it's possible the Minbari will think this is something similar.
What Delenn actually said was.

"I believe I could have explained it as a true religious mystery. The transformation of Branmer's body
to take his place with the gods."

And the whole thing ended with Delenn having to use her Grey Council authority to order the other Minbari around to not investigate what happened and support her story.

You do remember that he spoke to Delenn?

And the fact that a whole building changed in moments would pretty easily be seen as some kind of divine act, since there really aren't any means of doing that in the Babylon 5 universe.

Plus the architect is likely to pass on after this, so even if the Minbari don't accept the changes, Matthew's job is already done.

I think what Zoat's driving at is that "Maltusian" isn't really a name the species calls itself. A dog, dolphin, or wheat are just as much Earthlings in the eyes of other planets, because they live on Earth.
Oh we know. We are just having fun. That's begs the question tho. What are they actually called?

OA. Or Oans.
Pronounced Owen, or Ohh-Uhh.
Well sure that's where the Guardians live now but their species as a whole come from the planet Maltus. Which is why they tend to be called Maltusians. The Oans, the Zamarons, and the Controllers all come from Maltus. The argument was about why they would be called Maltusians since we don't call out species Earthlings. Basically there isn't really a true established name for them.

In that case, just call them Assholes.

Eh, if any of those plants or animals reaches the level where we have to fight or politically share the planet, then we can decide who gets to call their species for the planet or for something else.

We have an example in DC, with the Gordanians and Karnans apparently coming from the same planet. At the end, the lizards have the name of the continent they came from, and the cats have the name of the planet itself.

...point, I know the head, Lenonn, and Delenn's friend, was the previous Entil'Zha but died when he tried to stop the Earth-Minbari War. At the time, their entire organization was, at best, regarded as a joke. At worst, delusional has-beens afraid of shadows (yes, the pun is intentional, hence why they're regarded as a joke). I looked it up, and apparently, Turval succeeded Lenonn as a leader of the Rangers, so he should be one during this time, because this is still Season 1.

You do remember that he spoke to Delenn?
Do you remember he very specifically was instructed not to tell Delenn what he was planning to do?

And the fact that a whole building changed in moments would pretty easily be seen as some kind of divine act, since there really aren't any means of doing that in the Babylon 5 universe.
Even in real life "divine acts" get investigated before they're officially considered to be such.

The basics of any such investigation is going involve checking local camera recordings, orbiting ship recordings, orbiting station recordings, satellite recordings, and analyzing the building itself with various sensor systems for detectable energy effects.

Also, there are ways of doing that sort of thing in Babylon 5, the two ways realistically recognizable to the show/movie Minbari would be energy based transmutation and nano-tech. The former, from the technomages, and the latter, from the Shadows and their servants.

Plus the architect is likely to pass on after this, so even if the Minbari don't accept the changes, Matthew's job is already done.
Consequences are a thing, remember that whole conversation where you decided that he would stealthily do things so he wouldn't have the Minbari coming after him?
