Prologue: The Experiment

In a timeline far removed from the ones we know, on a Tournament of Power stage never spoken of before, where things happened differently from the timelines we know, Frieza and Goku had just been defeated. Jiren, pulling on his last reserves of energy, dodged their final attack, blasting the two into the depths below the shattered Tournament of Power stage.

Crunching, the Katchi Katchin stage supported his hand as Jiren held on to the ledge above where Goku and Frieza had just fallen from with one hand.

Android 17, battered and bruised, got up from his place lying on the Katchin, and wobbled towards Jiren, who was trying to pull himself up on energy reserves that no longer responded to him.

Android 17's wobbling limp slowed him down, and to an outsider, he looked like he was also one step from the grave. His right arm hung limply by his side, snapped earlier at the shoulder by an infuriated Jiren. It would heal, eventually, but right then, it was completely useless.

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

Android 17, stepping through the broken Katchin, approached Jiren, who was barely holding on.

"It's over, Jiren." Android 17 approached.

"No! I will not die here!" Jiren yelled defiantly, a red aura igniting around him as he burned through every last bit of his life force. Anything, even if he was hanging on by a thread to win.

"Goodbye. You fought well." Android 17 said, then reached down, leaning towards Jiren's huge hand to pry it off the metal.

However.

"It's not finished!" Jiren growled, and like a trapeze artist swinging over a pole, Jiren pulled himself up.

Shooting over Android 17's head, Jiren flipped, then spun, executing a desperate last attack.

Crack! Executing a kick to his back, Jiren sent Android 17 down into the depths below.

"I failed..." Android 17 weakly murmured as he plummeted into the dark.

In the silence of those fleeting seconds, the world of void was soundless.

Snap.

With the sound of a finger snap, everything went still. Android 17, frozen midair, looked around himself. Something had interfered. From his spot down below, he could see the Zenos frozen, the Grand Priest's face caught in shock, and everyone else restrained by an invisible power. Time had not stopped. Someone so powerful, so beyond everyone there, had forcefully restrained everything there.

"Hey." At Android 17's right ear came an amused cheerful voice.

Android 17 tried to move but found himself completely unable to.

Whoever it was chuckled.

"Don't move, just say yes or no to what I'm about to ask. I'll do everything else." The voice said in a humorous, slightly dismissive tone.

Android 17 managed to nod.

"Good. Say, since you're about to be erased and all that, what do you say about going somewhere else before the two kids decide to break out of my restraints?"

Android 17 closed his eyes, took a breath, still upside down, and then nodded.

"Good choice, my semi-mechanical friend. I promise you won't regret it." The voice said, and instantly the restraint on Android 17 disappeared. Flipping and turning to the person who was helping him, he saw someone who he had never seen before. He had purple skin, sharp ears, and red eyes, with white hair tied in a ponytail. A pair of round-rimmed glasses were on his face, and he had a tight black shirt and black pants on his legs.

Pulling a thin blade from his sheath on his belt, 17's savior flicked the blade, and instantly, reality tore open.

Grabbing the barely conscious Android 17 by the wrist, he pulled him through, with the rift sealing behind him.

Tumbling through the portal behind his strange savior, Android 17 collapsed against a park bench in front of him. He could tell he was somewhere underground, but it looked like a park, out in the daylight. There was a semi-convincing artificial sky above him, with even clouds in the fake sky, but he knew better. Around him were grown trees, and the silence of an empty park. A tall building was not far away; it was reinforced with plating on the windows, as if it were set up to stop a siege.

The savior turned to him, sheathing his black blade, and turned to Android 17 with a bow.

"With my job done, you just have to stir things up. Generate a little chaos, have a little fun. Get that psychic energy of this world all jumbled up even more than it already is, and I'll drop by to see you from time to time. Got it? This is my lab in this world, not far underground from somewhere called the Ark. Presto?" He asked, looking at 17 with the smile of a scientist playing with his favorite mouse in a cage.

"Ngghhh..." Android 17 groaned in pain.

"Oh, it looks like you're a little too broken right now. Oh well. You'll heal. When you're done healing, come look for me. I'm Fu. You could say I'm a little bit of a fan of you. You've far surpassed everything Gero had planned for you after all."

The man now known as Fu gave a little salute before taking out his thin black blade, tearing a clean cut in space, then hopping through.

Android 17 fell down sideways on the bench, looking out towards a small line of trees, and closed his eyes, letting his body heal. He wasn't physically tired. He could go forever and never tire, but mentally, he was not so resilient. Everything that happened in the Tournament of Power up until then was horrific, even for him. If there wasn't a no-kill rule, Jiren wouldn't have just broken his arm; he would have taken his head.

It reminded him of how powerless he felt in front of Cell all the way back then. There was always someone stronger. And then this Fu being; he was at a level of power he couldn't even comprehend.

Forcing himself to sleep, Android 17 drifted off into a land he would rather not remember.

He didn't remember his dream when he woke up. The sharp pain from his broken arm had receded to a dull throb. His power was still all there; it was just his injuries that worried him.

Looking around, with a calmer mind, he realized that there was no one nearby. Of course, he still couldn't sense energy, but he could see no one there. Getting up, he began wobbling towards the open gate to a huge metal capsule-like elevator.

With pained steps, he wobbled towards it. The doors to the titanium oval didn't open, but a little green print scanner slid out from it.

'Why not?' 17 put his left pointer finger to it.

Ding.

With a ding, then a soft hiss, the ten-foot-tall oval's side slid open to him, and he entered the brightly lit white interior that had a red carpeted floor and a single screen that displayed the word Ark.

Click.

The doors shut closed, and Android 17 felt the capsule start to move.

Cleanly, and with almost no feeling, the capsule flew through what felt like air before it stopped, and with a ding, the doors slid open.

Android 17 wobbled out into his new home, the massive country-sized underground city called the Ark.

Chapter One: Contact! New
Chapter One: Contact!

When Android 17 had heard "The Ark" from Fu, he had assumed it was some giant spaceship, or some underground ship. What greeted him when the doors slipped open was darkness. Pitch-black darkness. In the distance was a faint sound of massive heavy machinery grinding and clanking, but he could not see what it was from.

He took a breath, and instantly, the stench hit him. It smelt of rusted metal, industrial waste, decomposing matter, and the faint scent of blood. Since Android 17 could not sense energy, he was both literally and metaphorically in the dark. Stepping forward, he gritted his teeth through the pain. As the light from the capsule closed, and the capsule flew off to wherever it went, Android 17 took to the air. He didn't know where or when he was, but this had to be some underground dumping ground. The smell, the sounds of grinding. This had to be a landfill, but for machinery, and somewhere far underground.

Flaring his energy around himself, it gave off some light, but not much. Everything for about twenty feet around him was lit up by the white energy he generated. All around him were rock, broken metal, and rotting things.

He floated up high, shooting out dozens of bright energy balls around him, their bright light illuminating the area all around, and below him, several hundred piles of scrap, long rotten wood, and plastic the size of buildings lay in the silent darkness. He could even make out large bugs and centipedes that skittered from the light.

"Gross!" He exclaimed before sending the white balls further out and creating more and more that continued to expand outward. They expanded for a mile before something finally noticed them.

The depths of the outer rim were known for the sheer suffocating blackness, shifting temperatures, and eerie silence. Occasionally, one would hear the skittering of an insect, or a long rusted piece of metal fall from its own deconstruction due to rust, but if you heard or saw lights, that meant other people, and with other people came violence. For scavengers in the outer rim, death was a very, very common scenario from just about everything. And with death came food for everyone around them.

That's why, when strange lights began appearing across a huge scrapyard, a raggedy scavenger holding a rifle was the first to notice, then flee to report this to their boss.

Android 17 floated across the scrapyard, eventually coming to the edge of it, and facing a massive city of shabby metal houses, with broken concrete. Lines of wire crisscrossed from top to bottom, and electric lights occasionally flashed on and off.

With a whiz, a bullet whizzed past his right ear as he floated down to the entrance in the massive wall surrounding the heap. Android 17 didn't have time for this. He had to find medical treatment for his arm, figure out what Fu wanted with him, and make his way back home, if it wasn't already erased.

"Stay still!" The sound of someone on a megaphone could be heard, and Android 17 looked forward. The open gate, at least 30 feet wide, had men and women at each edge of the walls, and there were six large steel barriers that men and women with rifles hid behind, training their weapons on him.

Android 17 closed his eyes, took a long breath, then exhaled.

He floated down to the ground and raised his free hand.

Best to get this over with.

With a blast of clear white energy that erupted from his hand, the barriers, men, women, and walls were crumpled outward, slamming into the buildings behind them. He had spent many years fighting off poachers on Monster Island and working as a Ranger. He knew how much power to use to disable normal humans, maim, or kill if he needed. Right now he used enough to disable and lightly injure them. He needed answers.

He noticed one of the women was barely standing, clinging to a steel post sticking up from the ground. Her rifle was blown from her hands.

Whoever she was, she wasn't a normal human. He could see through her shattered yellow visor of glass; she had a pained look on her face.

Floating over to her while she recovered, Android 17 landed with a crunch on the dirt near her, an energy ball forming in his hand as he came closer. Without being able to sense energy, he wasn't sure if she was someone to be cautious of, or someone to eliminate.

An outfit of tan metal plating with a 23 in faded white on the chest, and plating on the legs where black pants were, along with her large protective helm, showed whatever she was was somewhat like him on the most surface level.

She had blonde hair tied in a ponytail that was slightly spiked.

"Tell me where this is." Android 17 said, his energy ball chirping dangerously.

The woman looked to the ball, to her unconscious comrades, and then back to him. She slowly raised her hands in surrender. It seemed she understood the fight was over, for now.

Android 17 knelt next to her. He slowly let the ball fizzle out.

"Let's not make this any harder than this has to be." He said, trying to make sense of things.

Thwack.

A sniper bullet slammed into the side of his head, crumpling like paper against it. He didn't even flinch.

Instead, he shook his head, stood up, and flew into the dark, sending a blast of energy towards where the shot came from. A rumbling, booming explosion blasted the two nearby buildings to shreds.

He was wasting Time. He had long stopped bleeding, but injuries don't heal instantly, and unlike Goku, who could use Ki to accelerate his own healing, Android 17 had no Ki, and he didn't know how to heal himself with the energy he did have.

Whooosh.

He flew through the dark, his arm throbbing in pain, reignited by the constant movement. Eventually, he saw, in the distance, huge walls hundreds of feet high, manned by kill drones, automated turrets, and what looked like guards or soldiers.

A large open area with several dozen walls, outposts, and terrain changes stood between the strange broken city and whatever was behind the walls.

Android 17, not caring for the consequences, flew out in the open and stopped when a dozen floodlights from the walls flashed onto him.

Instantly, hundreds of red dots converged on his head and chest, blinding him for a few seconds.

"Wha-" He didn't get the chance to finish his sentence before lasers, high-velocity armor-piercing shells, and bullets peppered his body. Drones swarmed out to attack him.

Vrangggg!

His humming green barrier surrounded him in a sphere, and the shells, lasers, bullets, and rounds plinked, sizzled, and struck the barrier to no effect. This continued for over a minute before they stopped. Android 17 shouted out, "Wait!" as the red sights realigned on him. For almost a minute, things went silent. However, nothing happened.

"I'm just trying to find help!" Android 17 shouted out.

Then the assault started in earnest; no longer bullets and lasers, artillery shells slammed into his barrier, exploding harmlessly. A railgun tore into his barrier, but it held all the same.

The assault continued till Android 17, realizing he couldn't negotiate like this, took off with a crack as the sound barrier was shattered. He flew down to the base of the huge wall, where a large military base compound stood in front of a long series of gates that led to whatever was on the other side of the wall.

Instantly, as he slowed down and descended to the ground, soldiers and more women like the 23 lady he had met before opened fire, not even giving him a chance to explain himself. Alarms blared, and within moments of his landing, he was circled by drones, soldiers, and strange women firing at him. His barrier held. No bullet or shell could pierce a barrier that could even temporarily restrain Jiren.

The smoke and heat from the firing, the shells, lasers, turrets, and such slammed into his barrier.

There was no talking to be had.

However, when the firing died down and the smoke cleared, Android 17's barrier was no worse for wear.

"I'm just trying to get help. Stop shooting me!" He growled in frustration. He was trying to do things the nice way, but it was becoming really hard not to just blast through the wall.

Click! The systematic clicking of hundreds of rifles trained upon him signaled the intent for him to surrender.

He was about to say something when a hologram of a woman flashed into being in front of the barrier.

She had long white hair, a large white military cap on her head, grayish-black synthetic skin, and white military regalia. She spoke, her voice not sounding entirely human. Android 17 realized it was an AI.

"Unknown entity. You have breached the secondary defensive grid of the Outer Rim. Your energy signature does not match any registered Central Government asset, Nikke, or known Rapture. Stop immediately and state your designation, or face systematic erasure."

"Systematic Erasure? Not likely. I'm Android 17. You can tell your soldiers to back off. Cause if I wanted to break this place, I wouldn't have stopped and waited politely for you to show up. This entire city would be smoking ash." Android 17 said, a dozen balls of sizzling energy appearing around his barrier.

"Arrogance is a common trait among Rapture Heretics, yet your biological readings suggest a human baseline. You are an anomaly that threatens the preservation of the Ark. I am the arbitrator of the Ark. I do not permit you entrance."

Android 17 sighed; things weren't going the way he had hoped. In his head, he began to prepare to blast his way through.

"Arbitrator, huh? Sounds like you've got a lot of responsibilities. But you've got it wrong. I'm an android, sure, but I'm a park ranger. I didn't come here willingly. I ended up in this dark and disgusting place through no fault of my own."

"Park ranger." An obsolete occupation. Nature on the surface was eradicated over a century ago by the Raptures. Your alibi is logically inconsistent."

"Look, I don't know what a Rapture is, and honestly, I don't care. I have a family to get back to, and animals to protect. If you can point me toward a hospital, I'll be out of your hair, or data, or whatever."

The hologram remained silent.

"Look, I'm trying to be polite and do this the right way because you seem to be the one running this show, but I have no idea who you are, what the Ark is, and where I am. Just let me get to a hospital and try to fix my arm, and then I'll work for you or whatever to pay off the bill." He said, stepping forward.

The woman stayed silent, staring at him for a moment.

"Acceptable. You will be granted temporary citizenship in the Ark, but you must now surrender fully to the Central Government for medical services, interrogation, and testing. Drop your shielding technology and do not resist. An escort will arrive soon."

Android 17 sighed.

"Fine."

Instantly, his barrier vanished, and the soldiers and women slowly blended into the background, leaving a dozen watching him closely.

This was going to be a long day, or whatever it was down in this dark place.
