    The one about the ship AI that was more alive than usual? For an experimental ship that could travel between gravity wells? I lost it and cannot find it!

    I'm reasonably sure it was /something/-dancer. I got up to the part where
    the avatar of a star tells them to stop because they're killing the stars whose gravity wells they jump through.

    It sounds like The Ship Who Sang series inspired the story you're talking about. Pretty much McCaffrey's best works, far as I'm concerned, and she has a lot of good works.

    Also great books, but someone actually found the one I was looking for and PMed me. It was Starwalker, but there are too many goddess-blessed things called Starwalker, so even though I tried that name, google was super unhelpful in finding it.
