    Boilers need to automatically do blowdowns of their own to avoid scale building and destroying them from the inside by keeping them from transferring heat to the water.

    Well, that's a pipe blowdown -- "boiler blowdown" generally means delibrately wasting water out of a boiler to keep the dissolved salt concentrations inside a target range, much closer to what you mean.
