I should just lampshade that it does /not/ mean agreeing with Hitler's policies. Since technically speaking, a mutual ally due to need/of convenience (like the Allies w/ Russia and Communism).
That aside, Japan's specific denial of note has to do with its war crimey activities in and of Asia. On that note, that is as much an unfortunate result of the militant extremist wing having power.
In these jp cases you can note that things tend to look worse since it makes the Axis adaptions be evil for the sake of being evil (and petty).
After all, it ignores the very convoluted political background that does technically justify Pearl Harbor being a logical outcome as well as Japan allying with Nazi Germany.
No, being allied with Hitler doesn't mean being a genocidal racist (see: Finland). However, the WWII Japanese were actually worse than Hitler in the war crimes department.
They were also incredibly racist; even their propaganda to the other Asian nations glorifying the GEACPS emphasised the "Yamato race" being at its head (this would be like Hitler hoping to convince the Slavs themselves with Nazi propaganda).
The Japanese turned conquered women into sex slaves, literally ate prisoners of war on numerous occasions, and systematised perfidy when they started losing.
Re: Pearl Harbor - I know what Yamamoto was planning and why it seemed like a good idea. What actually happened was a war crime, and even Yamamoto thought so (he intended to get a declaration of war issued a couple of hours beforehand).
I should point out, again, that the nationalist/extremist wing was dominant. The main differences in emphasis is that Nazi Germany prosecuted Jews specifically and /before/ warring- also because they're White and didn't have something akin to the scale of China nor a Pearl Harbor-ing the USA thing.
Also, to be very frank, the main reason the extremists were never in check'd was due to the closure of WWI's handling... by the West, led by the /USA/. So technically Pearl Harbor was literally karma (this does not make it less of a mess due handling).
That's why you then had them joining hands with the only power in a remotely similar angle (ie. Nazi Germany). The Japanese race thing is pretty much the /same/ as the Nazi idealized thing in concept. But the /difference/ however is the extent of centralization, or not, of extremism... as well as how long you have to work with it.
Hitler, not really that long. The Japanese, since WWI. That difference adds up, hence turning the /good/ Japanese behavior in WWI into... the extreme opposite in WWII.
Then with the non-extremist ones getting driven out and the extremists seizing control, that pretty much goes straight to hell. Thus the literal actions jp did make sense, but is at least explained why it happened.
Hence jp adaptions of things in more 'light' hearted means technically makes it worse by a significant margin. As it then makes them pretty much complete monsters in implication for starting a war without proper declarations... and overall senselessness to it all.
While it absolves the Allies of all responsibility for their direct contribution to the bloody mess, while turning them into victims fighting in legit self defense.
In other words, it goes from all parties being at fault (RL) to /just/ the Axis being at fault.
