It's not that. Yakisoba, for instance, is good, but not to point where you redefine your entire reason for existence which is how some characters seem to react when introduce to it or some other Japanese dish. You'd think they had eaten rocks all their life. It's kinda off-putting after a certain point.

I guess I forgot the second part: and nationalism is one hell of a drug, as well as most people being fucking ignorant on... lots of things.

I mean they can be pretty balanced and introspective on other aspects of their society and culture when writing. Just this odd attachement to their food.

Maybe compensating for the not so great food they have to put up with IRL? Most of those writers aren't rich if I recall, and food is one of those things that it's hard to ignore quality when living in poverty...

I don't quite think I've seen an isekai having natives praising Japanese food as better than their own. I've always thought of the repeated trope of excitement over Japanese food as Japanese people getting to eat their favorite foods again and being a bit overly dramatic about it is understandable.

Been reading Death Mage Who Doesn't Want a Fourth Time. Also seen the 'protagonist getting excited seeing familiar food' trope around, but here it's more the natives getting excited about the food that's (re)introduced to the world by the protagonist.

"Those times when you trade a single brick of beef flavor top ramen near its expiration date for a kingdom" would be a damn shit isekai story, but I love the concept.
