Divinity - a small NGE divergence

Here's a smal idea I had as a f* you to the Renewal series.

Mankind has searched for the divine for nearly as long as it existed. From the earliest civilizations building higher and higher temples to get closer to the heavens to the search for divine artifacts in more modern times.

The holy grail, the true cross, the "Lancea Longini" the holy lance and many others.
but then, in 2000 they found the closest thing to god in the ice of Antarctica

And in their quest to chain and harvest its power, they earned its wrath

Second Impact

In mere moments, earth and all living beings inhabiting the world were forever changed. Massive Tsunamis raked the globe, as the shockwave from the massive detonation threw the very planets tilt asked ending the very season.

Half of earths human inhabitants died either on this day or in the following conflicts.



Those responsible profited immensely from the fallout, for they were prepared.
Now with the threat of another, even more deadly event hanging over their heads, like a sword of Damocles, it was easy for them to influence the leaders of the world to pour endless resources into the only hope humanity had left.
Massive bio-mechanical beasts, created from the samples left by the same beast that nearly ended humanity would rise against the threat of the angels to come.

The newly empowered UN embraced this hope, even as they grumbled about relinquishing some of their new power to this "upstart" agency Gehirn and later on NERV.



Time proceeded, as it normally did, Plans were made, implemented or discarded, scandals happened and were hushed up, ignored or buried, and slowly NERV grew in size and power.

And so did the conflict against the angels start.



But it did not go the way any of the parties "in the know" wanted it to. For all their knowledge, bribery, blackmail and planning, they underestimated the tenacity of a boy.

Pushed down his whole life, ignored by his caretakers and abandoned by his *father* after the death of his mother, Shinji Ikari never wished for anything and never expected anything good to happen to him.

So, when Zeruel absorbed Unit 0 with Rei still inside its entry plug, it was just another step towards their ultimate goal, for a broken pilot of the test type was just what they needed in the end.

They did not get their wish for once in his life, Shinji only wanted to do one thing, SAVE Rei. What better way to do this, when he was sitting in the one thing even the angels learned to fear.

With a scream that was more Unit 1 than Shinji Ikari, he tore towards the being that dared take his friend away.

And so, for once in his life the boy defied the powers that be and claimed his price

For that, he was punished, the true lance, designed by the ancient ones struck true.

But for all their contingencies, backup plans and near total control, they could not fully contain the wrath.

"Near Third Impact" they later called it, damning the pilot gone rogue for nearly ending the world instead of saving it.

But even exiled into orbit inside the sarcophagus that should shut down the Unit for eternity, they could not extinguish the spark

For within the core of Eva01, the spark of divinity SEELE tried to extinguish, caught.

And instead of falling into nothingness, Shinji Ikari opened his eyes.

and the angels are so advanced, the evangelions run on 95% magic, hopes and prayer and 5% macgyvered metaphysics
