Hurried footsteps echoed the halls. They weren't the normal pitter patter heard from scouts marching to their positions or coven heads making their rounds. They were running…
"Oh titan! She got away, of course she got away. When Belos finds out she's escaped capture again he's going to kill me" He muttered under his breath as he ran
After running for what felt like hours, the boy had finally arrived at Belos's chamber. The chamber itself had a golden monochromatic theme, and was mostly bare aside from two large pillars and two smaller pillars that comprised the furthest walls of the room. The larger pillars were draped with ornate flags of equal size while the smaller pillars, surrounding the main attraction of the room, were etched with decadent symbols and markings. Of course, the real appeal of this room, however, was its main centerpiece, a large rose gold throne with a giant green-tinted beating heart suspended above it. There the ominous silhouette sat hidden by the flickering light of dimly lit candles.
"Ah, Hunter, there you are! How did your mission go?" the voice spoke with earnest
The sound of his voice sent a sharp jolt down Hunter's spine. He could almost swear his uncle already knew the answer and was simply giving him a chance to confess first. Before Hunter could utter a word though, his uncle continued, as if a reply had already been given.
"You know I only want what's best for you. The Titan has big plans for you Hunter, but you must prove your devotion. There are expectations of you, yet you've come back empty handed on your first major mission."
Despite his fear, Hunter resolved to maintain a straight face as to avoid provoking his uncle's curse.
"I'm sorry, uncle, but if you would just understand. We had the owl lady in our custody but when the guards were interrogating her she managed to use wild magic to escape. There were many scouts injured after she fled capture and I know it's not what the mission was for but we still have some of her confiscated belongings."
"What have I told you about referring to me as 'Uncle' when on duty? When you don your uniform, you shall refer to me exclusively as Sir or Emperor Belos. Or do you need another lesson to help you remember?" Belos stated with ire
"N-no, sir. My apologies, I will not make that mistake again" Hunter bowed his head in submission
"The Titan did not task you with collecting worthless trinkets. You were to capture the owl lady and bring her to me." His voice now boomed throughout the empty room
"If you would be so generous as to extend me grace, I promise I will not let you down again, sir. Please, just give me a chance to make it up to you!"
He slowly and carefully pulled out a small bag labeled "Owl Lady Junk" but before he could expose its contents Belos extended a long green tendril, fast like whip, and grabbed the bag from Hunter's now shaking hands.
"I shall take a look at the 'junk' you obtained from her myself, then I'll decide what punishment befits you."
Belos swiftly poured out the contents of the small bag onto his hand. Among the items was a ball of slime, a few teeth, and half a snail. Nothing particularly extraordinary had caught his attention. That is, until he uncovered a key. A key! Now, THAT was truly an extraordinary find! Perhaps Hunter's purpose had not yet reached its end after all.
Hunter stared cautiously at Belos who had now become fully entranced by his discovery of the key. Still shaken from the outburst, he hoped, perhaps naively, that Belos might show him mercy. Plagued with the knowledge Belos was not a merciful man. He was left trembling from the thought of what punishment could await him. His sunset eyes began to fill with tears as he recalled how unrelenting his last lesson was. Yet, he remained determined to hide the fear on his face, quickly wiping his watery eyes and forcing his quiver into a steadfast grimace.
Despite his expectations of an especially grueling punishment, Belos simply looked up once more before quickly saying "Leave now"
"You aren't going to punish me? Aren't you still upset that I failed to deliver the owl lady to you?"
Why did I say that? Why did I say that? Maybe he changed his mind and I just challenged him? Titan, I am such an idiot. Idiot, idiot, IDIOT!
"Leave at once, child. Hurry now!" Belos, said with a now commanding if not downright threatening growl in his voice

He ran like his legs were on fire, like if he stopped now the world would simply end. Through the many halls of that unwavering, emotionless castle. Had he been allowed he'd probably have broken the sound barrier just to get to his room. However, while on his mission to be the fastest witch to ever go to their room, he was stopped in his tracks by none other than Kikimora. Kikimora. He never understood why she seemed to hate him so much, as he hadn't done anything to spite her as far as he could recall. For as long as he could remember she always acted cruel and cold towards him even when he was just a helpless kid. Well, he was still just a kid, just not a helpless one he had thought.
"Well if it isn't the Golden Guard. Did Belos find out about your little failed mission to capture the owl lady? Judging by that pathetic teary eyed face of yours, he did. Oh, I bet he's gonna punish you big time for this one." she spoke with such joy it was sickening
Although Hunter was usually not one to back down from a fight, especially when it was Kikimora on the other end, he found himself unable to look up, let alone speak to her. Instead all he could muster up was an exhausted glare before quickly speeding up once more, this time to a much smaller degree towards his room.
Finally he arrived at his bedroom door, though it certainly felt more like a cage than a room. He slowly twisted the knob to his door as if whatever awaited him on the other side would jump out at him once it was open. Now, he stared, eyes glazed over, into a completely bare room that was "decorated", if you could call it that with a scrappy bed, bedside dresser, and a completely barren shelf. He slowly entered the room while trying to steady himself from the panic he had just felt. He softly plopped down onto his bed and found himself staring at one of the many blank walls in his room defeated. He couldn't stop himself from questioning why his Belos had chosen to withdraw his punishment, as he tried to calm his tremors. He had done everything wrong, he knew his Belos should have punished him. Soon his thoughts were filled with cruel ideas of what it all meant. Was this his punishment, being sent away without a chance to redeem himself? Not allowed to help his Belos who he was so desperate to. But, amidst those spiraling thoughts, he was hit with a brief moment of clarity.
The key! That was what uncle had been so fixated on before sending me away! Why did he care so much about that key that he revoked my punishment?
"I have to figure this out, clearly that key is very important. Maybe it has something to do with his curse. Maybe I can use it to heal his curse and then he'll let me be around him again!"
However there was one major issue: where would Belos be keeping the key? If the key was as important as he had made it seem, there's no way he'd keep it in the evidence room. Hunter took a moment to think about where the key might be stored. Then it hit him- something that important to Belos would never leave his side. He was probably keeping it in his pocket.

But soon it came to him, Belos was holding a special meeting with the coven heads later in the day, that he wasn't invited to. He was sure, in order to prepare, Belos would leave his outfit unattended if only for a few minutes. That's it, he just needs to wait for Belos to prepare himself for the meeting then he'd be able to sneak in and snatch the key, easy! Now, he just had to wait for the right time.
Less than an hour remained until the meeting, this is the moment Hunter had awaited. Swiftly, he left his room, and headed towards Belos's chamber. As he neared the door, unfamiliar voices reached his ears, his uncle's authoritative tone speaking to an unknown, higher-pitched voice that carried an unsettling blend of childlike innocence and sinister amusement. That was until it laughed, its laugh was more malevolant like that of a hyenas. Hunter was conflicted, on one hand he wanted to just leave and wait for a better time to strike, on the other hand he wanted to stay and listen for curiosity's sake. He was about to make like a tree and leave until he heard the new voice say "What about that blonde-haired one? I really thought you were going to go all blagaghaha on that kid."
He decided to listen just a little longer as he heard his uncles voice begin to echo out
"Not as long as does what he's told. Though lately he has been acting out of line, letting the owl lady escape while aiding injured scouts, and speaking out of turn. Another misstep like those, and I might have to sooner find a replacement. It would be unfortunate to lose one so young. Their defiance seems to be manifesting at increasingly tender ages."
"Hehehe, you're gonna break him like the others! Oooh! How are you gonna destroy it this time? Are you gonna tear its head off or burn it like the others? I love hearing their laughter when they are on fire!"

"Collector! We are not destroying anything. As long as he remains obedient, there's potential to work with him. After all, we cannot afford to keep replacing them, and we're ahead of schedule."

"Now that I have the portal key, I will be able to return to the human realm. Making my mission much easier."
Hunter was not only sick to his stomach but more intrigued and doubtful of his uncle's righteousness. He could feel his stomach churning from the comments Belos made about him. He wanted to scream, cry, and throw up at the same time. He once again ran to his room this time with little restraint on the tears coming down his face. The world spun around him as his thoughts became muffled pleas of fear. He couldn't tell up from down, left from right, all he knew was that if he messed up one more time…

If he was killed for his mistakes he'd have deserved it for being such a failure. He laid on his bed as he pleaded to the titan, wherever he was, if he could even hear him at all, to give him a second chance at life. None of this matters now, I have to make this right because if I don't… Gah! I will make this right! It must've been the titan's will for me to hear my unc- Belos say those things. The titan was just trying to prevent me from messing up again!
His wishful thinking soothed him, from his fear of the much worse reality. That Belos had chosen to hurt him, that it wasn't necessary. The next morning, around 5:30 am, he was awoken by a soft knock to his door. He jumped up in panic thinking he had slept in. He got himself ready, careful to make sure his mask was on as Belos did not like others seeing him. As he opened the door, he found a coven scout standing on the other side, holding an envelope in his hand. Hunter quickly snatched it from the scouts hands, then slammed the door.
The note read "Hunter, due to your lack of success during your first mission, I would normally assign you a punishment. However, I am feeling generous, so instead I am giving you a second chance to prove your loyalty. I am tasking you with feeding our captive basilisks. Unfortunately, even corrupted creatures like those must eat. Successfully complete this mission and I shall expunge you of your past misdeeds. - Belos"
Hunter nodded at the paper as if to tell it he was done reading. He had to admit he was a little relieved not only for the fact that he hadn't mistakenly slept in but that he was also not being punished.

After that, the journey was relatively short—just down the 30 flights of stairs in the prison to the very bottom. Past the rightmost door, down a series of corridors, until he reached the basilisk room. There, he stood, with fear in his heart upon the sight that layed in front him. Behind cages, in chains, wallowing and wailing in pain. He'd be mortified if training hadn't braced him for what he'd see, teaching him that basilisks were monsters that lived only to eat the magic of every witch with no discrimination. With the display in front him, however, he had a hard time seeing the brutality of these creatures. There was no shouting or slashing of claws but there was screaming. Though these weren't screams of anger, no. They were screams of anguish!
How can these be the magic-hungry creatures I was told about? They aren't supposed to be scared. They aren't supposed to feel pain.
Hunter's thoughts raced with the pain of a million fairy bites or stings of crab apples. His heart began to grow heavy at the possibilities.
Are these experiments hurting these creatures? Does Belos know this is happening? Is this what he intends to do?

"Please, we beg of you, free us! They are torturing us, they are killing us! Our children! Please, don't let them hurt them too! It's cold in here and we're bleeding out! Please, don't let them kill us! We'll do anything, just end our suffering. FREE US! "

As he opened the door, he found a coven scout standing on the other side, holding an envelope in his hand. Hunter quickly snatched it from the scouts hands, then slammed the door.
The note read "Hunter, due to your lack of success during your first mission, I would normally assign you a punishment. However, I am feeling generous, so instead I am giving you a second chance to prove your loyalty. I am tasking you with feeding our captive basilisks. Unfortunately, even corrupted creatures like those must eat. Successfully complete this mission and I shall expunge you of your past misdeeds. - Belos"
Hunter nodded at the paper as if to tell it he was done reading. He had to admit he was a little relieved not only for the fact that he hadn't mistakenly slept in but that he was also not being punished.
Basilisk feeding duty, I can do that. I won't mess it up this time! And maybe if I do the job really really well unc- I mean Belos will let me help again!
This was his chance at redemption, or at least, to him, it was. So, following those orders, he moved quickly, making his way to the basilisk cells. Along the way, he stopped by the castle's kitchen, where he grabbed some stale bread and a small assortment of overripe fruit, which he then shoved into the bindle he was carrying. After that, the journey was relatively short—just down the 30 flights of stairs in the prison to the very bottom. Past the rightmost door, down a series of corridors, until he reached the basilisk room. There, he stood, with fear in his heart upon the sight that layed in front him. Behind cages, in chains, wallowing and wailing in pain. He'd be mortified if training hadn't braced him for what he'd see, teaching him that basilisks were monsters that lived only to eat the magic of every witch with no discrimination. With the display in front him, however, he had a hard time seeing the brutality of these creatures. There was no shouting or slashing of claws but there was screaming. Though these weren't screams of anger, no. They were screams of anguish!
How can these be the magic-hungry creatures I was told about? They aren't supposed to be scared. They aren't supposed to feel pain.
Hunter's thoughts raced with the pain of a million fairy bites or stings of crab apples. His heart began to grow heavy at the possibilities.
Are these experiments hurting these creatures? Does Belos know this is happening? Is this what he intends to do?
The thoughts get louder, engulfing his entire mind. Now, they are racing and vibrating throughout his skull. Filled with fear, his body starts shaking, tears filling his eyes. He is left with only one thought remaining.
Are these creatures innocent?
Nonetheless he must continue, he has a mission of which to do. Powering through his disgust he made his way into the room. The room was monotonous with cracks spanning the dirtied grey walls it had. The floors looked as if they were originally meant to shine but were now resigned to a fate of dullness due to the smudging of footprints and bile. Covered in blood, it was vile. He saw basilisks of all shapes, sizes, and ages. Looking around at all the sullen sunken faces, some filled with tears, some noticed him too. Hands still shaking he made his way into the bag carrying their food. Filled with regret for choosing such rotten food, of anything he could've taken. He could hardly bear to look into their unsteady eyes as they would beg and plead to be freed.
"Please, we beg of you, free us! They are torturing us, they are killing us! Our children! Please, don't let them hurt them too! It's cold in here and we're bleeding out! Please, don't let them kill us! We'll do anything, just end our suffering. FREE US! "
Hunter's heart ached with each step he took. Hearing desperate pleas from every corner in that room. With every voice that echoed out he found himself drawing near the locks of the cells. He resisted the temptation filling his chest, knowing if Belos knew. He'd be dead too.
Cautious with every step he took, he now reached the back of the room. Looking into the final cell, he saw a different scene unlike the others so far. There in the cell sat a child, only a couple years younger than him. He reached into his bag finding it empty, he hadn't brought enough food.
Oh titan, Oh titan! Of course I didn't bring enough food! Especially for the basilisk who seems to need it most. I can't even get this right! Of course, I would mess up such a simple mission. How does Belos even manage to deal with me?
As these new thoughts began to cloud his mind, he heard a distinct voice that stood out from the rest of the cacophony, behind him.
"Please, I know you have a job to do. But, please. Even if you can't free the rest of us, spare the child. You're young as well, right? We're used to suffering, poked and prodded, electrocuted, and starved but she is only a kid. She deserves a better life, one outside of here. How would you feel if this was you? Take her out of here, take her far away! Do whatever you need to do to get her out of here. Please, I beg of you!"
Hunter stared with a blank face, no longer able to form words. He was only 10 years old, given a choice of life or death and he wasn't sure whose. She'd die in these cells but if he was caught he'd die a traitor to the only family he ever knew.

"You dare disobey, you insolent child. I guess you need to taught a lesson to remind you of your place"
"Uncle please, I'm sorry. Forgive me." the child, no older than 5, spoke with a quivering voice
Thump!... Thump!... Thump!...
Sounds of crying and screaming echoed out as the child was "taught a lesson". Hunter shook his head viscously as he came out from his flashback. He wiped the tears forming in his eyes and looked up once more. Still finding himself unable to utter any words, he looked at the basilisk who had just spoken. He gave her a look of sympathy and determination then nodded before turning to the child's cage. He bent over and grabbed the lock. As her eyes met his, he spoke his first words since he got there.
"I know what it's like to suffer too."
He moved swiftly through the door. Now, he was making his way to the kid who stood in front of him. Chains were restraining her arms, neck, and tail, leaving hardly any space for her to lie down and rest. He didn't have time to think about the horrifying reality of this room; if he took too long, they'd be caught. Guards checked the room every quarter of an hour, and the clock was set at 12:52. Eight minutes to get in and out, to deliver this child safely outside the castle walls. So, with the seconds ticking away, he rushed to uncuff the young basilisk. Shuffling through the many keys splayed out on his keyring, he searched for the right one. Once he finally found it, he worked quickly, like the pounding of his heart. Starting with her neck, then her arms, and lastly her tail. Now the clock struck 12:57; there was no time left to waste. He grabbed the kid's arm, but she resisted. A game of tug and pull ensued; she was stubborn and refused to move. She cried and screamed as she struggled against his grip.
"Mommy! I don't want to go! Please, I don't want to leave you! Mommy, I love you! "
Hunter now felt even more lost than before. It was 12:59, and the kid refused to leave without her mom.
"I love you too. But I need you to go with this young boy. He will take you somewhere safe, where you'll be cared for."
"What about you? What will happen to you? I can't leave you behind! Mommy, don't make me!"
"I will be okay; you come from a strong family! I know you're scared, but I promise when I get out of here, I'll look for you. And when we meet again, I'll give you the biggest hug of your life. Now, go, I can hear the guards coming!"
She was right; down the hall came the bellowing footsteps of two guards doing a routine check. Hunter froze in his panic; if they saw him, he'd be doomed. He had no choice – it was now or never. Without a second thought, he gripped the girl's arm tightly and burst through the door, hoping the guards were just far enough that they wouldn't recognize him. He didn't think about the possibility that they would chase him. Now it was too late; he was being chased. The sound of pursuing guards grew louder as reinforcements joined in, coinciding with his rush past them.
Hunter had only had his staff for a couple of months now and could only cast basic spells so far. He shot small fireballs in an attempt to stop the guards. Of course, it didn't do a whole lot to stop the growing army behind him. However, as he continued, he managed to inflict enough damage on a wall to block the halls behind him, leaving most of the guards stranded. Just like in the beginning, it was down to two. He ran into the courtyard, making a run for the gate, but there were guards there too!
They couldn't run fast enough, and the gate was shut in front of them. They were trapped and swarmed by guards. Hunter looked around in hopes of finding a means of escape, but no matter where he looked, near or far, there was nothing he could do. Left with no other options, he had to attempt a different spell. A spell he had attempted many times before during his many training sessions. It was especially unpleasant when he failed as it usually resulted in getting punched in the face, or stomach, or pretty much anywhere. He didn't want to think about what would happen if he couldn't do it because If he wanted to save the girl and himself, he'd have to get it right. There was only one chance, so he closed his eyes and tried to concentrate. The guards gathered closer, closing the gap between them.
"Please titan, help me keep this kid safe!"
Hunter whispered in tearful desperation. And almost as if the titan himself was listening, Hunter felt a jolt of magic surge through him. He looked to the gate in front of them, closed his eyes again and teleported them through.
"Haha! I did it, I can't believe I actually did it!"
Then like waves, tears came crashing down.
"I'm never gonna see my mom again. I'm never gonna see my family again. Why couldn't you just let me stay? Why did you have to take me away? Why couldn't you just let me suffer in peace?"
He couldn't hear the words she said as she collapsed into the ground but he could feel the pain that exuded from them. There were bigger thoughts filling his mind as he had finally come to terms with the weight of his actions. There truly was no going back. And, now he was responsible for the life of a girl who was only slightly younger than him and had nowhere to go.
Soon a stillness had begun filling the air, leaving the children with nothing but solemn silence. Even the young basilisk's sobbing had turned into noiseless weeping. That was until, like in a trance, the young boy broke the silence with a haunting reprise of his previous celebration.
"I did it. I can't believe I actually did it."
He fell onto his knees, no longer able to carry the weight of his decisions… Of his guilt. It seemed, in that moment, both children had realized the families they once knew were gone. And like two broken song birds, they sobbed once more, watering the ground beneath them.
To any given onlooker, this somber scene was a simple reminder that through everything that had happened, these were still just kids. Very scared and alone, kids.
And the unfortunate reality for these kids, is they didn't have time to cry. With each drip from the stormy rain clouds of their eyes there was the thunderous, uniform step of another scout tasked with capturing them. They had to go now.
Time's arrow kept marching forward; like clockwork, it was time to run once more. Each beat of their hearts matched the steps of the scouts, matched the ticking clock counting down their time alive. They ran hand in hand, running on instinct through tall, beckoning trees.
It was late at night when they found it, a town where they could hide. Despite the time, it wasn't any less bustling than it was in the daylight. As they found themselves in the night market, everywhere they looked, there were witches and monsters alike. Noise echoed off every wall in sight—the chatter from witches complaining about prices, the chatter from monsters who couldn't find the right potion—all hidden under flickering candle lights. Their heads spun in every direction, lost as to where to go. That was until the boy spotted her tall figure standing at one of the stalls. Anyone could recognize that spiky red hair with streaks of gray. Hunter took a look at the girl by his side and inhaled deeply, realizing this was probably his best chance. Not just any witch would willingly take in a creature that unfortunately has a reputation for being a cold blooded killer. Especially when said creature isn't even supposed to exist anymore. Though, he was unsure if even the owl lady was brave enough to take on such a challenge. That was the risk but what choice did he have?
If anyone could keep a highly wanted prisoner out of the Emperor's reach, it would be her. But if she sees me, she'll think I'm with the guards. Titan, what do I do?
He knew there wasn't much time left as he saw the lanterns of guards approaching from the forest. He looked to the basilisk and said:
"This is it; I found you a home. You see that lady with red and white hair? She's the best escape artist on the Boiling Isles. She can keep you safe from the Emperor. I can't go with you, though, so you'll have to do this alone."
The girl looked at the woman and then at him for a moment.
"Please, don't leave me too! I don't want to go alone. Why can't you come with me?"
His eyes filled with empathy as he replied, "It's… complicated. Let's just say she and I don't exactly get along. We don't have time for this; you need to go."
"Oh. Goodbye," she spoke with her voice breaking as she directed her head toward the ground.
Before she got too far, she turned around one more time, looking at him with puppy eyes before saying one final goodbye. "Thank you for finding me."
He watched as the little basilisk approached the lady with peppered hair. He continued to watch as the same basilisk stood next to her and sheepishly said "Please, I need help." She didn't even take the time to introduce herself, though now that Hunter thought about it, he wasn't even sure if she had a name. Though his train of thought was cut off by the towering lady turning towards the helpless girl and quickly attempting to shelter her shocked face with a futile hand over her mouth. He realized how horrifying and shocking it must've been for her to be face to face with a basilisk, a creature supposed to be extinct and notoriously magic-thirsty, the size of a growing child begging her for help. Yet, just like she had always done, she played it cool.
Hunter tried to keep his distance and remain out of sight of the owl lady. Though he stayed relatively nearby, just in case something went wrong. He could just barely make out what they were saying to each other.
"Help? Hah" she snorted out a laugh before proceeding
"I think you got the wrong person, kid, cause I can tell you I'm not much help" With those words the shine she had previously displayed on her face only seconds ago fizzled out.
"I can't even help the kid I have. Titan, how did I end up responsible for a child?"
The young basilisk looked even more helpless than when she had originally approached. Hunter was sure she'd have given up all hope by the look in her eyes but yet instead he saw her face fill with resolve as she spoke, once more, slowly and calmly.
"I know I am a basilisk but please I need your help. I was held captive in a cage with m- my family. They did bad things to us, to me. But then there was this guard-" The basilisk took a glance towards Hunter's still nervous face before continuing.
"I managed to escape by stealing his keys and I ran into the woods. I saw this place lit up and thought I could hide here but I am sure the guards are still hunting me. I didn't know what else to do and you looked so friendly, I thought maybe you could help hide and protect me."
Normally, the owl lady would make a snarky remark or tell the kid to find someone else to bother but this time she was serious and somber as she replied "Wait- hold up a second, kid! They? Do you mean the Emperor's coven? What makes you think I could protect you from them? If you couldn't tell, I'm not exactly the most put together witch. Heck, I can't even manage to care for my- the kid I found. I couldn't even protect my fa…" She takes a deep breathe in, trying to resist the tears forming in the corner of her eyes, before proceeding
"I don't- I don't think I'm too good of an option for a parent." She looked once more, softly at the young girl stood in front of her
"But then again I can't just leave you out here, for titan knows what to happen to you. If even half of what you said is true, then you'll need somewhere to hide. I'll let you stay at the owl shack with me until I can find someplace else safe for you. Afterall us weirdos have to stick together." She let a small snort as she continued
"I don't even know your name, yet I'm already agreeing to let you stay with me. Titan, what happened to me!" She let out a soft sigh as she tilted her head up, before turning back to the kid and extending her hand.
"I'm Eda, the owl lady. What's your name, kid?
The girl stared quizzically at the arm extended in front of her as if unsure of its intended meaning. She had also chosen not to reply to the question, leaving Eda unsure if the girl was simply unwilling or if she genuinely had no answer. The silence had left Eda awkwardly searching for a way to recover the conversation. Her eyes darted all around the young girl in search of something she could use. In her desperation she spotted a tag hanging from the child's left ear, which had the Emperor's coven sigil with the roman numeral "V" over top of it.
She definitely wasn't lying about escaping the Emperor's coven. She must not have been given a name.
Eda thought for a moment before proceeding. "Vee. What do you think about the name Vee?"
The young girl gave a stare that felt as if it was piercing through her skull before giving a soft nod. Eda wasn't too sure if the kid actually liked the name or just nodded to comply. She didn't linger on that thought for too long, however, as she heard the recognizable steps of the emperor's scouts approaching.
"That's our cue, kid. Hop on and I'll show you where we'll be staying." She said as she pulled out her staff adorned with a little owl atop it and extended her hand towards the girl.
As she climbs atop the lady's staff, she takes one final look towards the boy cast in darkness. No longer was he a guard in gold, he was her friend. Or at least what she imagined a friend to be, and she wished for nothing more than for him to be riding alongside her, safe and sound. Yet, there she was, hundreds of feet in the air, finally free after all this time, while he was left sitting, awaiting the repercussions he'd face. Despite the pain of leaving her first friend behind, she found herself admiring the scenery of the view from up high. Her head was in the clouds, as they soared the sky.
Oh, what a cruel world it was, to be punished for saving a life. Hunter gazed at her wonderstruck face feeling his heart ache with care and pain. He was glad she was safe but he couldn't help finding himself longing to be where she was. Yet, there he was, stuck to the ground, waiting on death row, while she escaped into a new life. It was in that final moment as he watched her disappear amongst that clouded sky that he resigned himself to his fate. He couldn't run forever and even if he tried, he had nowhere to go. Hunter Wittebane would exit the world the same way he lived within it, as if he was never alive.

"Well if it isn't, the Emperor's once esteemed Golden Guard. Did you get lost on your way to the basilisk cells ? Or did little nephew think he could get away with committing treason?"

"I don't- I don't think I'm too good of an option for a parent." She looked once more, softly at the young girl stood in front of her
"But then again I can't just leave you out here, for titan knows what to happen to you. If even half of what you said is true, then you'll need somewhere to hide. I'll let you stay at the owl shack with me until I can find someplace else safe for you. Afterall us weirdos have to stick together." She let a small snort as she continued
"I don't even know your name, yet I'm already agreeing to let you stay with me. Titan, what happened to me!" She let out a soft sigh as she tilted her head up, before turning back to the kid and extending her hand.

She had also chosen not to reply to the question, leaving Eda unsure if the girl was simply unwilling or if she genuinely had no answer. In her desperation she spotted a tag hanging from the child's left ear, which had the Emperor's coven sigil with the roman numeral "V" over top of it.

Eda thought for a moment before proceeding. "Vee. What do you think about the name Vee?"
The young girl gave a stare that felt as if it was piercing through her skull before giving a soft nod. Eda wasn't too sure if the kid actually liked the name or just nodded to comply. She didn't linger on that thought for too long, however, as she heard the recognizable steps of the emperor's scouts approaching.
"That's our cue, kid. Hop on and I'll show you where we'll be staying." She said as she pulled out her staff adorned with a little owl atop it and extended her hand towards the girl.
As she climbs atop the lady's staff, she takes one final look towards the boy cast in darkness. No longer was he a guard in gold, he was her friend. Or at least what she imagined a friend to be, and she wished for nothing more than for him to be riding alongside her, safe and sound. Yet, there she was, hundreds of feet in the air, finally free after all this time, while he was left sitting, awaiting the repercussions he'd face. Despite the pain of leaving her first friend behind, she found herself admiring the scenery of the view from up high. Her head was in the clouds, as they soared the sky.
Oh, what a cruel world it was, to be punished for saving a life. Hunter gazed at her wonderstruck face feeling his heart ache with care and pain. He was glad she was safe but he couldn't help finding himself longing to be where she was. Yet, there he was, stuck to the ground, waiting on death row, while she escaped into a new life. It was in that final moment as he watched her disappear amongst that clouded sky that he resigned himself to his fate. He couldn't run forever and even if he tried, he had nowhere to go. Hunter Wittebane would exit the world the same way he lived within it, as if he was never alive.

"Well if it isn't, the Emperor's once esteemed Golden Guard. Did you get lost on your way to the basilisk cells ? Or did little nephew think he could get away with committing treason?"
Treason. It certainly wasn't a word just anyone would spit with such ferocity. There's only one person in the Emperor's coven who'd throw around such a serious accusation.
"Kikimora. Why are you here?"
"That really is a question I should be asking you, that is, if I didn't already know the answer. I do wonder though, what compelled you to throw everything away just to free a disgusting beast onto the Boiling Isles? Haha, I'm not really asking because I could care less. Once I return you to Belos, I will finally get the recognition I deserve for the leader I am. I'll be the new Golden Guard!"
Hunter's panic returns as reality no longer just sets in but completely engulfs his mind. He was a traitor to the Emperor. Kikimora finally bested the Golden Guard, and Belos will certainly kill him. But before Hunter could decide whether to run or fight or simply accept his fate, he was unconscious and the last thing he remembered was the smell of sleeping nettles.

"I'm so sorry, uncle. I didn't mean to sleep in, I just had so much homework to do and I fell asleep."
"Hunter, you know better than to arrive late to your training. If you want to be the golden guard then you must learn to manage your time. However, since this is your first warning, I shall only be extending your training by two hours for today and you will not be receiving a lunch break."
That day was one of many especially grueling days for Hunter. On a normal day his training would go from 6 am to 12 pm then off to lunch and to finish his studies the rest of the time. Since Hunter was soon to be christened as the golden guard, he was in advanced studies. He would spend the afternoons studying algebra, Boiling Isles history, English, and every variation of science that existed. Of course, those were only the main subjects he had to study. Hunter was also enrolled in many elective courses.
As the days till his ceremony encroached, so did all the sleepless nights. With less time to sleep and less time to wait, he'd study till late. Soon, this all began taking a toll on him. As he'd fall asleep during training, lunchtime, or throughout any given time of the day. These displays of incompetence did not go without their due punishments. On good days, he might get away with a few extra assignments or homework but on bad days…
Well, on days like those he'd be left bandaged head to toe to think about his misdeeds. It was no easy task to carry on with his routine, bruised with broken bones. It was a miracle he managed, but less so that no one took notice. Despite the cruelty of these punishments, and the pain they left him in, rarely were they ever permanent reminders. With a little healing coven magic and an illusion stone in the meantime, the wounds would clear up with no trace in no time. However, all great things must come to an end, if they can even be called great. Thus too, the days before permanence.
It was now only days away from the golden guard ceremony and Hunter had one final test left before he could officially be dubbed the golden guard. Capture the owl lady's palismen.
Dear Hunter, As the days till your ceremony approach from over the horizon, there's one last test I am assigning to you. To prove your mastery in all the skills you have been training for and your devotion and unwavering loyalty. You must complete this task without any assistance and mustn't speak a word of it to anyone. You are to capture the owl's lady palisman and deliver it to me. You have until the eve of your ceremony to complete your final test and failure will not be tolerated. Good luck, Hunter. - Belos
One last test and I'll finally be the Golden Guard! I'll finally earn my place in the keep. I'll finally be of use to Uncle and maybe then he'll love me.
Hunter sits on that thought for a moment before uncovering a new one.
How am I supposed to capture the owl lady's palisman if I don't know what she looks like? Maybe one of the coven heads know her… But I can't get their help.Titan, what do I do?

He was not afraid of what might be waiting if he failed; he knew whatever it may be, it would not last. It didn't take long for him to be sucked out of his thoughts as his ears were barraged with discordant voices. He was now swarmed with brightly colored stalls, with witches and monsters everywhere.
He was unsure what to do, where to go. Overwhelmed by the lights and sounds he found himself lying on the ground. No matter how hard he tried to cover his ears and close his eyes, there was no escaping his mind. However in his moment of weakness he found the person he needed, helping him.
"Hey kid, you ok? You look… rough. Here, look at me." She spoke reassuringly, almost as if from personal experience.
She held up her hand, slowly raising and lowering her fingers one by one. As she repeated the action she slowly inhaled and exhaled coincidingly. Leading Hunter to soon follow her lead, breathing synchronously with her.
"There ya go kid! You're getting it! Now, do you want to tell me your name?"
"I-I'm, my name is Hunter ma'm and if you'll excuse me I've got a mission to complete." He spoke sharply and yet there was a subtle trembling behind it.
"You sure you're good kid? I mean I'm no doctor but you sure seemed to be freaked out a moment ago."
"My name is Hunter, not kid and I said I'm fine. I don't have time to make conversation with a crazy, old witch."
"I'm not a crazy, old witch, my name is Eda the owl lady and I am the most powerful witch on the boiling isles."

"I will have you know, the scouts are among the strongest and brightest witches on the isles and a whole deal more powerful than some overconfident old hag."
"Who are you calling old hag? Look kid, I don't know what your parents told you about the Emperor's coven but I can tell you it's not as great as you think. I was once almost inducted into the coven." Her voice turned to a quiver as she glanced away.
"Hah, you in the Emperor's coven? What was your sarcasm not strong enough to defeat your opponents? Whether what you said was true or undoubtably false is irrelevant, you are a wanted criminal. So, if you'll just come with me, we can get this conversation over with."
"Come with you? Not even the Emperor's guards have been able to catch me and you think I am going to let a kid arrest me. I think you should go home to your parents."
"I AM NOT A KID! My name is Hunter Wittebane and I am soon to be the Emperor's youngest golden guard. So, you can either come with me willingly or with force, your choice."
"So what? You're gonna call the Emperor's prissy little guards and have them capture me? I told you already his scouts are incompetent, they'll never catch me."

"Please just come with me. Maybe Unc- Belos will be merciful if you come willingly." He spoke knowing mercy would never come.
"I'm sorry Hunter but I can't. You know that." Eda said somberly not knowing what would happen to Hunter if he returned empty handed.
"I can't return without you. I CAN'T." Hunter spoke with tenacity and an undertone horror as tears streamed from his eyes
He then lunged at Eda, swinging his right arm full force towards her face. Eda dodged his attempt at an attack, and quickly grabbed his hand and then fully restrained him. Before he had a chance to escape, he smelled something unfamiliar before passing out.
Sorry kid, but this is for your own good. You were gonna get yourself hurt.
Eda carried his unconscious body to a nearby tree and proceeded to tie him to it alongside a handwritten note.
"So, this is your soon to be new Golden Guard? It's a new low even for you to have a kid do your bidding. Next time I won't go so easy on him. - The Owl Lady"
Before she left she noticed a poster on the tree that read "Golden Guard ceremony in two days! Buy tickets now, only 1000 snails! [ In small print ] Ceremony will be broadcasted live for all on the crystal ball"
I guess the kid wasn't lying after all. I hope he has someone to care for him.

So, he closed his eyes once more in his defeat knowing surely his demise he would meet. As he laid motionless attempting to resist the bumps in the road on his journey, there flashed a vision.

He wasn't sure what the meaning of it was nor where the key led but something told him it was his one chance at survival.

Two guards escorted him to the outside of those dreadingly familiar doors. There they stood waiting for the cue to open the doors and deliver him. He could make out what sounded to be the voice of Kikimora and Belos speaking.
"Lord Belos, I brought you a gift. I have discovered a traitor within the castle. I caught him aiding a basilisk from the cells in escape."
"Did you manage to intercept the traitors' attempt at assisting the basilisk?"
"No, unfortunately we were too late to capture the basilisk but I have brought you the criminal who is responsible."
"Bring him in."
His voice boomed across the room, loud enough even the guards on the other side could hear it. Like a snoth to a lantern the two guards pushed through the gates to the devil's chamber. The doors bellowed out with an almost animalistic ferocity.
"What a shame. You had so much potential and you threw it all away to help a monstrous beast."
"Uncle, please, forgive me. I don't know what overcame me, she just looked so scared and helpless. I couldn't just leave her there, she was only a kid."

Faced with the end and no exit, he slid down the wall. As footsteps approached, he clutched the key tightly as if it were his staff. Before the door could open the key began to glow and hover out of his hand. He couldn't believe his eyes, the key was a door.
"Halt, you have nowhere to run. Just accept your fate and DIE!!"

"Is little goldy scared? I'm sure he'll make your death quick and painless." She snickered knowingly of what's to come
He flailed and thrashed but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't break the ropes that bound him. His staff was nowhere in sight. This was it, he was soon to be face to face with Xolotl. So, he closed his eyes once more in his defeat knowing surely his demise he would meet. As he laid motionless attempting to resist the bumps in the road on his journey, there flashed a vision.
The key.
He wasn't sure what the meaning of it was nor where the key led but something told him it was his one chance at survival.
Clang!
Hunter felt the carriage come to a halt and the sound of footsteps approaching. This was the moment of truth. He was minutes away from staring into the face of his once beloved uncle.
Two guards escorted him to the outside of those dreadingly familiar doors. There they stood waiting for the cue to open the doors and deliver him. He could make out what sounded to be the voice of Kikimora and Belos speaking.
"Lord Belos, I brought you a gift. I have discovered a traitor within the castle. I caught him aiding a basilisk from the cells in escape."
"Did you manage to intercept the traitors' attempt at assisting the basilisk?"
"No, unfortunately we were too late to capture the basilisk but I have brought you the criminal who is responsible."
"Bring him in."
His voice boomed across the room, loud enough even the guards on the other side could hear it. Like a snoth to a lantern the two guards pushed through the gates to the devil's chamber. The doors bellowed out with an almost animalistic ferocity.
"What a shame. You had so much potential and you threw it all away to help a monstrous beast."
"Uncle, please, forgive me. I don't know what overcame me, she just looked so scared and helpless. I couldn't just leave her there, she was only a kid."
"Oh Hunter, I thought you were smarter than that. Those creatures are deceivers, they manipulated you and unfortunately left you to die. I cannot ignore your crime, sadly, that would set a very bad precedent. "
"Please, Emperor Belos, show me mercy. I promise I won't ever betray you again. I can even help you recapture the basilisk!"
"You have been given many chances to prove your worth and yet to no success. I am afraid I cannot afford to keep around such a risk to security. I can't say this is surprising, however, it seems to run in your blood to betray me. Kneel before me and accept your punishment. I will make your execution quick."
"You must learn that no mistake goes without its due punishment. Previously, your punishments were light but as you're soon to be the new Golden Guard, you must learn discipline and I cannot go lightly on you anymore. Kneel before me and accept the consequences of your failure. Remember, I only do this for your own good, Hunter."
Now, we arrive at the moment… where everything changed.

And red filled the room. Now, Hunter was seeing visions of two. The man who raised him; who only wanted the best and the man who showed no mercy, not even to his nephew.
Tears filled his eyes in a kaleidoscope. He searched through the fragmented glass for the exit.
Blinded by fractured light and empty hope, he ran. He had only one chance, he snatched the key from Belos's hand. A chase ensued as no other than Kikimora chased after him, down the repetitive halls of that castle. It wouldn't have been so scary if she hadn't grabbed his staff to use against him. She shot balls of red electricity towards him while laughing maniacally. To no one's shock, she was enjoying the chase. Hunter, however, gained enough distance to hide in a room around the corner.
"Titan, what do I do with this key? I'm gonna die."
Faced with the end and no exit, he slid down the wall. As footsteps approached, he clutched the key tightly as if it were his staff. Before the door could open the key began to glow and hover out of his hand. He couldn't believe his eyes, the key was a door.
"Halt, you have nowhere to run. Just accept your fate and DIE!!"
Silence quickly fell upon the room as it filled with starstruck eyes. Starstruck eyes but no stars, just blue skies with clouds of white and green trees. He hesitated as he put one foot through the door but he didn't get time to decide as he felt a jolt hit his back. He could only keep his eyes open long enough to see a red figure standing on the other side of the door and as the door shut, so did his eyes.
"You're back early, hoot hoot."
"Yeah, it was like a wasteland there. I guess there's some big emperor's coven event happening today. They'll probably be broadcasting it live."
She sat down, flicking through the channels on her crystal ball. Then suddenly she stops as shock and horror covers her face.
"Everyone welcome our youngest proclaimed golden guard! He has worked tirelessly and with determination. He has shown great strength and prowess earning this scar in the process. He battled fiercely against a wild witch who ambushed him only days before his ceremony."
Her heart sank as she saw the slash covering half of his right cheek.

"Mami, look what I found!"
"¡Dios mío! Where did you find that?"
"Papi, showed me! He said this is called a house spider and that its harmless"
"How about we go and return this little guy to his home?"
"Ok mami!" The little girl giggled
Off they went, the little girl happily skipping in front of her mother. She was careful not to drop or spook the spider on her way. It wasn't a long distance from the kitchen to the basement where the spider was kidnapped from its home. Old wall paper tattered from years of toddler abuse, stained with colorful streaks of abstract art. As they made their way down those creaky wooden stairs into the rustic, unpainted basement they heard a terrifyingly familiar sound.
Thud!
Their amble pace increasing to a full blown sprint as they rush down the stairs.
"Manny, what was that noise? Are you alright?"
Unfortunately there would be no response to that question. As she stumbled forward to see her husband collapsed on the ground. His face abnormally pale yet familiarly so. Eyes missing their lustrous shine, now dull and faded. Stillness filled the air as it felt as if the world froze over once again. All was forgotten as she sobbed openly. That minute felt like eternity until a voice broke through the air.
"Mami, is papi going to be alright?"
It was in that moment brief clarity broke through her foggy head.
"Luz, go call an ambulance!"
"Mrs. Noceda, I am sorry to inform you that your husband's cancer has progressed to stage 3. We estimate he may have up to two years to live if we start him on chemo immediately."
To some those words may have been bittersweet, but to her they were only bitter. Not even the darkest of chocolate could compete. It had barely been a year in this new town, searching for the best doctors. Yet, not even they could save the love of her life. So, this was it, she'd have to say goodbye to her Chief O'Bailey. She could only hope he wouldn't sail far among the stars without her.
"Luz, can I speak to you?"
"Yes, mami, do you know when dad is coming home?"
With those words she froze. It was the calm before the storm, a moment before the tsunami comes crashing in.
"Oh Luz." She sighed with teary eyes
"He won't be coming home. Do you remember how I told you daddy was sick and that's why we moved closer to the hospital?"
"Yeah, so the doctors can make him better!"
"Well, sweetie, the doctors said he has to stay at the hospital for a while. Your daddy has gotten a lot sicker."
"Oh, well that's alright! Once they make his sick go away we can throw him the biggest party!"
"You're such a sweet kid… I'm sure- he'll love it." She sniffled while wiping her wet face
The innocent girl's eyes had a stare that pierced her soul. She didn't have the strength to tell her only child she would be fatherless. The girl smiled a toothy grin but was unusually still and Camilla couldn't help but wonder if she knew more than she let on.
Weeks go by as Manny's condition worsens leaving him bedridden.
"Hey, lightning bug, could you come here?" His voice shaded in rasp
"Si, papi!" She spoke ever so sweetly peering up at him with puppy dog eyes
"Do you like witches?"
"Eeeek no, they have warty faces and like to hurt people!" She exclaimed whilst crossing her arms. This left Manny in a muted chuckle that barely managed to cover his lack of breath
"What if I read you a story about a good witch?" He spoke the prodding question while patting the side of his bed for her to climb up. To which she happily obliged
"Then the good witch Azura shot the large serpent whilst exclaiming "Eat this sucka!""
"Papa, what's a serpent?" She spoke with a puzzled look
"That's just a fancy word for snake."
"Why was the snake evil? Are all snakes evil?" She asked the absurd questions as if one could simply generalize an entire species with the word.
"Haha, of course not, pumpkin, this snake is just the villain in this story." He paused to consider her first question and give an answer that was digestible for a kid her age. Then he followed his first response with the next.
"The snake lost his parents to a bad witch and so decided all witches were evil and needed to be destroyed."
"But that's not fair! Azura didn't do anything to him. If he would just talk to her, maybe she could help him find his parents. "
"Luz. His parents aren't- can't be found."
"Why not, you said they were lost?" Although he found her literalness endearing he knew he had to explain that not only animals can die. Yeah these were snakes but he knew they represented much more than that in the story and in his child's heart.
"No, I mean yes I said that but I didn't mean "lost". They are… they passed away."
"Oh. Like that little duck mami brought home?" She spoke cautiously like the world could cave in on itself from the question
"Yes, like that little duck." He spoke with a sad look of understanding that this was the first time she had ever considered that people could die, let alone parents.
"That's really sad." Her face now somber with realization
Soon the time for visitation neared an end. The little girl willed herself not to leave, her only desire to have more time with her father. Still fascinated by the story he had read to her moment's earlier.
"I don't want to leave, Papi! Don't make me leave!"
"He needs to rest, Luz. We can visit him again tomorrow." Camila spoke in an attempt to carefully redirect the girl.
"Lightning bug, come here for a second." He beckoned her with the soft motion of his hand.
"Si, papi?"
"How would you like to take The Good Witch Azura home to read yourself?"
"But, what about you? It's your book." She gave such a look of pity upon the statement
"Haha, I've read this book plenty of times, it's about time I pass on the torch to you, little witchlet!" He spoke alongside the gentle ruffle of the girl's hair.
"Really? You're the best dad in the world! I will read this everyday!" She squealed while squeezing her father in a tight hug, that left him borderline suffocating in the love it exuded.
Ring…Ring…Ring…
"Hello, Is this Mrs. Noceda I am speaking with?"
"That would be me? Is everything ok, did something happen to Manny?"
"...I am sorry to inform you but your husband's condition has deteriorated over the night. He has fallen into a comatose state and we are not sure if he'll make it past the next few hours."
"I- uhm, ok, thank you for letting me know. I will be over right away!" Tears began filling her wistful eyes as she was consumed by despair.
"Mami, who was that? Was that about papi?" The girl spoke with an air of unease, still terrorized by the prospect of losing a parent.
"Luz, I need you to go and get dressed real quick, we're heading to the hospital." She spoke, her voice level and unusually even in an attempt to keep her composure.
"Okie, mami!" Luz proceeded with an apprehensive skip away to retrieve her clothes.
In a rush, they made their way to the car. There were no laws that could interfere with Camila's driving. She was bound and determined to make it to her husband, smite her God. Past every red light and the cursed traffic that seemed determined to make her miss her husband as he dies. Time seemed to still as they try to best the speed of light. The day didn't even dare shed its watery gaze to match the tears in her eyes. The sky, blue shimmering like the prospect of death was a foreign concept. Like life goes on despite the heartache that ensues. Though to her, the world was ending and the meteor was nearing the earth with its threatening presence. Finally they arrived before its foreboding appearance. The building stood towering over them, cascading them in shadows. In a hurry they made their way to his room, Camila completely forgetting to tell Luz the reason for their visit. Soon they stood at the precipice of his door, Camila hesitated at the entrance. Her steps faltered as she cautiously made her way in, Luz in tow.
Beep…Beep…Beep…
The monitor sounded in a jarring rhythm. There laid her beloved husband of many years. Pale, near ghostly white. His cheeks were sunk in, barely obscured by the oxygen mask placed delicately on his face. He was unusually stiff, the lack of movement disconcerting and unfamiliar. The hint of his warm smile, however, still remained. It no longer carried the warmth of devotion but the remnants of a lost love. He looked peaceful, all remainders of exhaustion faded.
"Manny, I don't know if you can still hear me but I love you. I know these last few years have been hard but I have never regretted choosing you. You are the love of my life an- and… you showed me how to live. I still remember when we first met. It was Kate's party and they told me it was a costume party so I dressed up as Captain Kylie from Cosmic Frontier but when I arrived I was the only one in costume. I was humiliated but then you came up to me and put together that silly Dr. Borg cosplay on the spot with some duct tape and an mp3 player. We ended up ditching that boring party and spent the night chatting about the show. I knew from that moment you were the love of my life. There's no person I'd rather spend eternity with but if this is where our journey ends then I hope you know you were everything. I love you, Dr. Borg, my wonderful Manny. I can't wait to meet you again in a galaxy not far away at all." Her words desperately out of breath, carrying the weight of her grief in her chest. She spoke almost in a plea every line, as if her love would bring him back. As if he would rise up like Frankenstein's monster and assure her that he was ok. Yet, as minutes pass there he still remains. The deafening silence made her almost forget that their child was there as well.
"Mami, is papi going to be ok?" The girl spoke anxiously, unable to even look her mother in the eyes.
Camila stood silent trying to quell her tears. Her voice was trembling as she tried to speak.
"Luz… your father- The doctors did everything they could. They couldn't save him, they told me he only had a few hours left. I'm so sorry, mija."
"Papi can't-"

"Manny!?"
"Papi!?"
They didn't get a chance to process as nurses rushed in attempting to resuscitate the flat lining man. It was a menial endeavor as he was already comatose with cancer spread throughout his body.
"I- I didn't even get to tell him goodbye." The child spoke feeling infinitely smaller than she already was. Her voice squeaked, not disguising the agony she was in as she sobbed freely.
Camila scooped her up into her arms as they shared bitter tears.
Days went past but the mourning remained. The funeral was cold, the rain stinging like acid on their skin. The next few weeks were spent in a muted house that no longer held the title of home. The colors now dull and lifeless. The walls sharing in the family's burden with cracked paint and chipped edges. Luz became withdrawn and rarely left her room, not even to eat. Camila felt unsure of what to do, her worry growing. She knew at least that her daughter had become enamored with the book Manny gave her which meant she had something she still enjoyed. Eventually she came to the conclusion that some fresh air was a must. Her job was daunting and demanded most of her time and while she had been given some days off to deal with his passing she was now back to work full time again. So, she decided to take a day off to spend with her daughter on a picnic. She prepared a nice golden wicker basket and a soft red plaid blanket. She filled it with Luz's favorite sandwich, comprised of chicken, bacon, lettuce, and mustard. A few snack sized bags of chips were added alongside two bottles of water and napkins.
"Luz, sweetie, I took the day off, how would you like to go on a picnic?" She said the words with loving earnest
"Ok, I guess." The dejected girl said non-committedly
"Ok, I already packed the basket, so once you go get ready we can head out."
The girl sluggishly made her way upstairs slipping into a pair of dark greenish gray shorts and a pink tank top. She grabbed some dark blue crocs and rainbow socks, her wardrobe primarily composed of rainbows and glitter. The girl didn't exactly understand the world of fashion or the concept of matching or complimentary colors. Once she finished getting dressed she made her way downstairs with torpid movements. Receiving a soft hug before they proceeded out the door. Luz made her way towards the car until her mother beckoned her by her name.
"We don't need the car where we're heading."
"We're walking? Where could we possibly be going?"
"You'll see soon enough." She let out a soft chuckle
They proceeded to make their way in a saunter down the road. The journey felt impossibly long as Luz desperately wanted to remain locked up within her room to indulge herself into the world of fantasy once more. Finally they reached a clearing amongst trees that stood next to the road. A softly trodden dirt path stood before them. Camila led the way stopping along the way to admire the flowers or view the wildlife roaming around. Fields of flowers composed of pink and white tulips, dandelions, and azure's… Luz followed, seemingly with disinterest. Determined not to crack and let herself enjoy the moment without her father. Eventually they arrived at a small clearing, the sunlight gently casting its spotlight onto the area. Camila decided to get the picnic set up while Luz began to wander. There was this magnetic pull Luz couldn't quite place but she followed it. Like a buzz in her heart, a whisper in the wind, she pursued it. Then she arrived at a disheveled wood cabin amongst the foliage. But there was something that stood out to her more than the ominous building. A blonde boy laid unconscious, face half covered by a coarse looking scar. His ears were pointed and abnormally large, they resembled that of the characters from her book. They resembled… a witch!
She broke into a sprint believing this was a sign from the universe. What the sign was telling her, she didn't know. It didn't take her long to arrive back at the opening where her mother had laid out their picnic.
"Mami, look! I found a witch!"
"Luz, I already told you, witches aren't real."
"But mami, I'm not making this up. He's got yellow hair and this large scar on his cheek."
"You have a very active imagination, Luz!"
"And he's lying on the ground, not moving."
"Wait, where did you say you saw this witch?"
"Over by that creepy house in the woods."
Camilla's face turns from its previously relaxed demeanor to one of anxiety.
I thought that house was supposed to be abandoned. What if there's someone staying there who needs help. What if Luz was telling the truth?
"Would you mind showing me the exact spot where you saw this "witch"?"
"Ok, mami!"
The girl took her mother's arm dragging her at a rapid pace. Camila found herself tripping, barely able to keep up with her daughter. Just as Luz had said there was the boy laying on the ground with pointed ears and a scar that composed half his face. Camila approached slowly to check his pulse. He was warm and breathing which was a reassuring sign she thought. She knew that they should call an ambulance but she couldn't face the reminder of her late husband this close to his passing. So, against better judgment she decides briefly to look around for a caretaker and when she found nothing, carry him home till he woke up. She could find the answers they needed once he awoke. She tasked Luz with retrieving their picnic as they made their way back. We ended up ditching that boring party and spent the night chatting about the show. I knew from that moment you were the love of my life. There's no person I'd rather spend eternity with but if this is where our journey ends then I hope you know you were everything. I love you, Dr. Borg, my wonderful Manny. I can't wait to meet you again in a galaxy not far away at all." Her words desperately out of breath, carrying the weight of her grief in her chest. She spoke almost in a plea every line, as if her love would bring him back. As if he would rise up like Frankenstein's monster and assure her that he was ok. Yet, as minutes pass there he still remains. The deafening silence made her almost forget that their child was there as well.
"Mami, is papi going to be ok?" The girl spoke anxiously, unable to even look her mother in the eyes.
Camila stood silent trying to quell her tears. Her voice was trembling as she tried to speak.
"Luz… your father- The doctors did everything they could. They couldn't save him, they told me he only had a few hours left. I'm so sorry, mija."
"Papi can't-"
Beep…
"Manny!?"
"Papi!?"
They didn't get a chance to process as nurses rushed in attempting to resuscitate the flat lining man. It was a menial endeavor as he was already comatose with cancer spread throughout his body.
"I- I didn't even get to tell him goodbye." The child spoke feeling infinitely smaller than she already was. Her voice squeaked, not disguising the agony she was in as she sobbed freely.
Camila scooped her up into her arms as they shared bitter tears.
Days went past but the mourning remained. The funeral was cold, the rain stinging like acid on their skin. The next few weeks were spent in a muted house that no longer held the title of home. The colors now dull and lifeless. The walls sharing in the family's burden with cracked paint and chipped edges. Luz became withdrawn and rarely left her room, not even to eat. Camila felt unsure of what to do, her worry growing. She knew at least that her daughter had become enamored with the book Manny gave her which meant she had something she still enjoyed. Eventually she came to the conclusion that some fresh air was a must. Her job was daunting and demanded most of her time and while she had been given some days off to deal with his passing she was now back to work full time again. So, she decided to take a day off to spend with her daughter on a picnic. She prepared a nice golden wicker basket and a soft red plaid blanket. She filled it with Luz's favorite sandwich, comprised of chicken, bacon, lettuce, and mustard. A few snack sized bags of chips were added alongside two bottles of water and napkins.
"Luz, sweetie, I took the day off, how would you like to go on a picnic?" She said the words with loving earnest
"Ok, I guess." The dejected girl said non-committedly
"Ok, I already packed the basket, so once you go get ready we can head out."
The girl sluggishly made her way upstairs slipping into a pair of dark greenish gray shorts and a pink tank top. She grabbed some dark blue crocs and rainbow socks, her wardrobe primarily composed of rainbows and glitter. The girl didn't exactly understand the world of fashion or the concept of matching or complimentary colors. Once she finished getting dressed she made her way downstairs with torpid movements. Receiving a soft hug before they proceeded out the door. Luz made her way towards the car until her mother beckoned her by her name.
"We don't need the car where we're heading."
"We're walking? Where could we possibly be going?"
"You'll see soon enough." She let out a soft chuckle
They proceeded to make their way in a saunter down the road. The journey felt impossibly long as Luz desperately wanted to remain locked up within her room to indulge herself into the world of fantasy once more. Finally they reached a clearing amongst trees that stood next to the road. A softly trodden dirt path stood before them. Camila led the way stopping along the way to admire the flowers or view the wildlife roaming around. Fields of flowers composed of pink and white tulips, dandelions, and azure's… Luz followed, seemingly with disinterest. Determined not to crack and let herself enjoy the moment without her father. Eventually they arrived at a small clearing, the sunlight gently casting its spotlight onto the area. Camila decided to get the picnic set up while Luz began to wander. There was this magnetic pull Luz couldn't quite place but she followed it. Like a buzz in her heart, a whisper in the wind, she pursued it. Then she arrived at a disheveled wood cabin amongst the foliage. But there was something that stood out to her more than the ominous building. A blonde boy laid unconscious, face half covered by a coarse looking scar. His ears were pointed and abnormally large, they resembled that of the characters from her book. They resembled… a witch!
She broke into a sprint believing this was a sign from the universe. What the sign was telling her, she didn't know. It didn't take her long to arrive back at the opening where her mother had laid out their picnic.
"Mami, look! I found a witch!"
"Luz, I already told you, witches aren't real."
"But mami, I'm not making this up. He's got yellow hair and this large scar on his cheek."
"You have a very active imagination, Luz!"
"And he's lying on the ground, not moving."
"Wait, where did you say you saw this witch?"
"Over by that creepy house in the woods."
Camilla's face turns from its previously relaxed demeanor to one of anxiety.
I thought that house was supposed to be abandoned. What if there's someone staying there who needs help. What if Luz was telling the truth?
"Would you mind showing me the exact spot where you saw this "witch"?"
"Ok, mami!"
The girl took her mother's arm dragging her at a rapid pace. Camila found herself tripping, barely able to keep up with her daughter. Just as Luz had said there was the boy laying on the ground with pointed ears and a scar that composed half his face. Camila approached slowly to check his pulse. He was warm and breathing which was a reassuring sign she thought. She knew that they should call an ambulance but she couldn't face the reminder of her late husband this close to his passing. So, against better judgment she decides briefly to look around for a caretaker and when she found nothing, carry him home till he woke up. She could find the answers they needed once he awoke. She tasked Luz with retrieving their picnic as they made their way back. Once they arrived, she placed the boy carefully onto the sofa and prepared an ice pack for his head and propped him up with a pillow. Hours went past leaving Camila worrying that he might not wake up and that they'd need an ambulance anyway. That was till they heard a barely audible groan come from the direction of the living room. As they made their way over, they saw a blonde head poke up, eyes fluttering open. They were…magenta?

They were in the kitchen, a pot boiling on the stove. Camila was cooking her classic gumbo recipe. A variety of spices, chicken, sausage, bell peppers, onions, celery among other ingredients. It wasn't a dish she made all too often due to the price of groceries. However, Luz was always a big fan when she made it and needed some cheering up now more than ever. So, Camila had decided to surprise Luz that afternoon by making it. Surprise was a bit of a loose term as it didn't take long for Luz to realize what her mother was making as she joined her in the kitchen. They both gathered at the counters and Luz, albeit little helped as best she could with the assistance of a miniature step-stool. And it was for that small moment they felt a semblance of normalcy that had been lost since…his passing. The sunset peaked with large eyes aglow through the windows of that room. A gentle breeze making its way past the slightly ajar window, breathing new life into their hollow home. They basked in the heat of the stovetop as the chill wind brushed against their exposed arms. Flooded with fond memories that almost made them forget the sadness that had taken root in their hearts. Almost made them forget…

The two girls exited the kitchen in a hurry. The young boy had finally woken up. As they made their way to him, his eyes met theirs. What they saw was unexpected, and left a creeping feeling that made its way along their backs. His eyes were a vivid magenta, and had an uncanny familiarity that neither could quite place. One that was nearly human, yet so distinctly distant like a doll that was designed by an alien. His eyes pierced theirs, however, it was not with a threatening gaze. They carried an unheard pain, wide in an expression of fear. This kid was terrified. It was innately human to fear difference, that of which resembles us but falls short of conveying our same humanity. Despite this looming fear that filled both their chests, when they saw the look that traced every inch of the boy's face they couldn't help but feel sadness. Because the only thing more human than the fear of the unknown is empathy for anything with a face.
"W-who are you? Where am I?"
"My name is Camila and this here is Luz. We found you unconscious at the old cabin in the woods. Could you tell me your name?"
"H-hunter. Where am I?" He repeated the prior question ferociously.
"You're in our house. How did you end up at that cabin, I thought it was abandoned?"
"No, I mean. This isn't where I'm from. This isn't right. No, no, no. I shouldn't be here. I have to go-. I have nowhere to go…" He said as panic set in and dejection entered his face
"It's ok, you're safe here. We can help you find your home. I just want to make sure you're safe first though. Do you remember what happened before you passed out?"
Hunter stared intensely, his gaze now paralyzed on the wall. It was clear to the Noceda's whatever had led the boy there was deeply haunting. Something that terrified him deep in his core.
"Halt, you have nowhere to run. Just accept your fate and DIE!!"
"Is he ok, mami?"
"I'm not sure, Luz. He reminds me of some of the dogs we occasionally treat at the vet's office."
"Are you saying he was abused?"
"Luz! We shouldn't speculate about his home life without evidence! We can't know for sure without asking but I don't think now is the time to prod him with questions."
"What do we do then?"
"We just wait until he calms down and try to comfort him the best we can until then."
"Hey, kid. Do you have any hobbies you like?"
He remained silent, his stare blank as ever. Every part of him swamped in fear. His dull eyes shaded gray. It was unclear whether his lack of an answer was because of the shock or if he truly had none. Camila knew it was best not to push and so offered a distraction in inquiry's place.
"Ok, I'll put on a movie for you to watch. What do you think about Disney? Let's try Lilo and Stitch!" She spoke, not needing an answer from the boy. All she wanted to do was provide a deflection to hopefully coax him out of his dissociative state he was currently in.
She followed her previous comments up with "I made gumbo if you get hungry. Just let me know and I'll bowl you up some."
Hours flew by as the dazed kid became enamored by the flashing images that crossed the T.V screen. She pondered about his seeming unfamiliarity with the screen. Had he seen a T.V before? Though she quickly shook the thought off, deeming it outrageous to assume such a drastic thing. Perhaps, the kid simply came from a home that didn't watch Disney. She knew there were people who simply did not like that brand of media. Camila decided to indulge his wonder in the brightly colored animations and continued to put on several movies for both him and Luz to watch. She played for them the classics like The Lion King and The Fox and the Hound. Then after some insistence from Luz she put on Mulan. By the time they had finished the collection of movies it was well past Luz's established bedtime, however, Camila had made an exception this night as she dubbed it necessary to help soothe the nervous boy.
"Can we watch Ratatouille next, mami?" The girl looked up with pleading eyes.
"Sorry, junebug but I already let you stay up way past your normal bedtime, it's time for you to get some sleep. Besides, you have school tomorrow and you'll be cranky if you don't get some rest."
"Wait, I still have to go to school tomorrow? But- what about Hunter? He needs another kid around to show him the ropes."
"T-the ropes? You're gonna tie me up!?" The timid boy squeaked
"No, no. Of course not! It's just a phrase people use sometimes!"
"And no can do, Luz. The school won't be very pleased if you miss a day to hangout with a friend. He'll be just fine spending a little time alone. It might even be beneficial for him!"
"Can't the school just make an exception this one time?"
"Sorry, Luz. The school isn't as understanding about these kinds of things."
"Dang it, fine. Where is Hunter gonna sleep? Can I give him some of my pajamas since he doesn't have any of his own?"
"There's a spare sofa in the basement he can sleep on, if he'd like of course. And he looks to be around the same size as you so I don't see why not." Camila bit her tongue, not wanting to mention how underweight the young boy looked. It was clear he hadn't been eating full meals for a decent amount of time, if looks were any indication. "That's very kind of you to offer him your pajamas, Luz!"
"Of course, mami. I'd hate for him to be stuck wearing scratchy clothes to sleep."
The fierce echoes of tree branches rustling the outer walls of the house pierce the air. Howling wind taunting the night and all those who dare to sleep. Camila lays awake, restless, mind filled with tragedy. Deep cut wounds that carved anguish into her bones. The worry picking at scabs buried within her heart.
Hunter tossed and turned with dreams just as haunting. Moreso nightmares that terrorized every bit of emotion the boy carried. There was no peace, no escape from the chains that wrapped around his brain. From a life that had mistaken being set aflame for the warmth of a hug.
Now a fractured structure, the house stood on a shaky foundation of grief. The broken hearts of those who no longer know family. Halves of a whole brought together by a feeling like the universe had them tethered. There was a sensation that filled the cavity found within their chests. It tasted bitter like coffee and dandelion greens. The irony of a flower that shines bright like the sun to taste savory like blood.
The storm picked up, engulfing all the threads that remained. Luz was the light to a home whose power had long since gone. Yet, the dimlit building creaked and groaned with broken limbs. Even a light like hers goes out eventually, leaving a splintered frame of something once whole.

The sounds of a leaky tap that cannot contain the well of tears stored within its own heart. The house cried in an expression of empathy. Now the pillars of support sound in a long drawl. They beg for release in contempt of the floors Hunter now lays beneath. The glossy shine of the floors dulled like the eyes of the three. The colors blurred into a gray mishmash that no longer contained the formula of life.
Manny was buried alone in the Gravesfield Graveyard. But on that night, it felt like they were still in the cemetery and their hearts buried alongside the man they had held so dearly. As the morning came Camila was wide awake. Her eyes stained red either from tears or lack of sleep. Perhaps it was both. It was 7:30 am and Camila had work at 9:00 am. She got herself dressed and hurried down stairs to prepare breakfast. However, before making her stride to the kitchen she went to check on the boy in her basement. It was to her shock that he was already wide eyed, sitting motionless on the sofa that was there. Finally after processing the image, she spoke.
"Hey, Hunter, good to see you awake. How are you feeling?" Her voice soft and sweet
And while she attempted to maintain a low volume and gentle tone he was still startled into a jump. His body not so subtly trembling as he attempted to recuperate after the scare. He then made a cautious effort to face the woman who was still standing at the base of the stairwell. The look in his eyes mirroring her own which served to indicate that he hadn't slept all too well himself. However, that was for her to address later once he was more comfortable speaking.
"I- I am fine, ma'am. I apologize for not coming up sooner. Do you have any need of assistance?" He spoke in an automated almost robotic voice
"You are quite alright, after yesterday I can imagine you were rather exhausted. And that's very kind of you to offer, if you'd like you can help me make breakfast. Of course that is if you'd like, don't feel like you have to!"
"Yes, ma'am."
His words didn't really acknowledge her previous clarification. So, she wasn't sure if he actually wanted to or if he simply felt indebted. "It's like a flattened cake but still very fluffy." She spoke matter-of-factly, assuming it was the typical curiosity of a kid.
"Cake?" A childlike ingenuousness now taking root in the once stoic kid, revealing his age earnestly.
"Like what you have at a birthday party!"
"Birthday?"
"H-have you never celebrated your birthday before?"
To that aghast question Hunter simply shrugged. Camila's heart broke into even more pieces than she had thought possible. A wave of shock poured through her.
Where did this kid come from? Why hasn't anyone come searching for him?
Perhaps it was pointless to dwell on aimless questions. He was there now, safe and sound. If his parents hadn't come looking for him, maybe they never would. Maybe they were meant to find each other. Whether this was the work of an unknown benevolence or simply coincidence, this was her responsibility now. She couldn't say it yet, that he was her's. That she'd go to hell and back just to keep him safe from whatever nightmares he came from.
Nor did she know, she may very well have to because he had a home there. Nay, just a gulag vacant of any personal warmth. For the time being it was his world for her to show him.
"How about I just show you instead? Did you get the eggs from the fridge?"
He shook his head in acknowledgement, almost a little too eagerly. She thought he was going to give himself a concussion with how vigorously he nodded.
"Gracias Hunter, would you like to crack them into the bowl here?" She extended to him with a soft smile.
He stood blank as ever, though seemingly quizzical at the prompt. He had never been allowed to decide for himself. Always given commands, never choices. Camilla had already picked up on his tendency towards indecision and so followed her previous question with a gentle nudge.
"Here let me show my special technique to keep the shells out of the bowl!" She then with ease cracked one egg in half, not a single piece where it didn't belong. She then grabbed the second egg off the counter and held it out to Hunter. Her movements slow and cautious, stopping many inches before reaching the child. Hunter was just short of Luz's height and so, too, needed the help of the step-stool. He was admittedly skittish at first to step onto it which left him a smidge embarrassed when in comparison to his many previous feats. Camilla, however, did not seem to treat him any less for his timid demeanor and in fact encouraged him the entire time. His attempt was quite stilted and left several fragments of shell within the bowl. However, Camilla didn't have the heart to make it known. Instead she offered him a celebratory cheer that she attempted to keep at a low volume for fear of startling him. And for the first time since him arriving there, he had a satisfactory smile on his face. Finding the gap between his front teeth very endearing.
After this small victory she stirred the mixture and poured it into the lightly oiled pan. Camilla took control of the cooking which left Hunter less than pleased; if only for a short moment before the feeling was cast aside by excitement as he witnessed the liquid grow in size and find its newfound shape. Soon, the fluffy bread was placed softly on a plate then another and another. However, Camilla wanted Hunter to get the first bite. So, before taking the plates to the dining table she cut a small bite drizzled in syrup and handed it to him.
He was mesmerized by the sweet smell that filled his lungs. The food itself looked rather plain in its tan color but soft like a pillow nonetheless. He hesitated at first, knowing his luck he'd choke before he got to enjoy it. But, that moment he took his first bite, oh the world spun. It was different this time, he wasn't drowning in anxiety. It was welcoming, it was safe. Like he had clawed his way into heaven and this was the welcome gift. The taste was sweeter than anything he had ever eaten, of course he was mostly used to gruel and rations. He wished he could live in this moment forever, bask in the delight.
Camilla's face glowed as she watched the young boy grin ear to ear as he bit into the piece. She took it as a good sign from the look on his face. It didn't take long till she heard the familiar sound of footsteps from the stairwell.
"Buenos días, Mija! Hunter and I made pancakes!" With a smile she gave a little nod towards the boy. She then followed her words up with "We were just about to settle at the table."
"Eeeee! I love pancakes! You're the bestest mom ever!" The girl squealed at a nearly deafening decibel.
"Hey, don't forget Hunter helped too!" She said with a cheeky smile and side eye.
"Hehe, thank you too Hunter!"
"Uhh- yes." He said, not knowing the proper response to that statement.
"You're welcome Mija. Now, let's eat before I have to be at work and Luz at school. Oh, by the way, are you going to be ok here alone Hunter? I will make sure to check up on you every few hours on the phone and I will return for lunch just for a few minutes to make you something to eat. I'm sorry I have to leave you here, it's only until I can figure out what to do with you!"
"I'll be ok Ma'a- *ahem* Miss Camilla! I can make my own food, you do not need to worry about me." He said back in his unusually robotic manner.
"Oh well, I'm still going to be returning for lunch because I want to make you something to eat. Also, do you know how to use the phone Hunter?"
He just shook his head timidly, seemingly embarrassed by how useless, no, how helpless he was. Camilla just gently extended her hand in a beckoning motion, not bothered by his lack of knowledge and went over how to dial and view voicemails on the house phone. After which she gathered her bag full of vet supplies and lots of paperwork. Luz followed close in tow donning a purple backpack covered in glitter and animal stickers. Before entering the car Camilla gave Hunter an affectionate wave with Luz following suite shortly after but with much more enthusiasm. Then they were off and Hunter was alone.

It tasted bitter like coffee and dandelion greens. The irony of a flower that shines bright like the sun to taste savory like blood.
The storm picked up, engulfing all the threads that remained. Luz was the light to a home whose power had long since gone. Yet, the dimlit building creaked and groaned with broken limbs. Even a light like hers goes out eventually, leaving a splintered frame of something once whole.

The sounds of a leaky tap that cannot contain the well of tears stored within its own heart. The house cried in an expression of empathy. Now the pillars of support sound in a long drawl. They beg for release in contempt of the floors Hunter now lays beneath. The glossy shine of the floors dulled like the eyes of the three. The colors blurred into a gray mishmash that no longer contained the formula of life.
Manny was buried alone in the Gravesfield Graveyard. But on that night, it felt like they were still in the cemetery and their hearts buried alongside the man they had held so dearly. As the morning came Camila was wide awake. Her eyes stained red either from tears or lack of sleep. Perhaps it was both. It was 7:30 am and Camila had work at 9:00 am. She got herself dressed and hurried down stairs to prepare breakfast. However, before making her stride to the kitchen she went to check on the boy in her basement. It was to her shock that he was already wide eyed, sitting motionless on the sofa that was there. Finally after processing the image, she spoke.
"Hey, Hunter, good to see you awake. How are you feeling?" Her voice soft and sweet
And while she attempted to maintain a low volume and gentle tone he was still startled into a jump. His body not so subtly trembling as he attempted to recuperate after the scare. He then made a cautious effort to face the woman who was still standing at the base of the stairwell. The look in his eyes mirroring her own which served to indicate that he hadn't slept all too well himself. However, that was for her to address later once he was more comfortable speaking.
"I- I am fine, ma'am. I apologize for not coming up sooner. Do you have any need of assistance?" He spoke in an automated almost robotic voice
"You are quite alright, after yesterday I can imagine you were rather exhausted. And that's very kind of you to offer, if you'd like you can help me make breakfast. Of course that is if you'd like, don't feel like you have to!"
"Yes, ma'am."
His words didn't really acknowledge her previous clarification. So, she wasn't sure if he actually wanted to or if he simply felt indebted. She also found herself thinking about how odd his manner of speaking was for a kid his age. It was so formal and dignified like he had been trained to speak in such a way. But once again that was a future conversation that she wasn't going to engage just yet. Instead she simply nodded and moved to make her way up the stairs as he followed closely behind. His steps were eerily quiet. They felt practiced like he had experience with making himself small. The more Camila reflected on the boy's mannerism, the more concern dawned on her. Whatever his home life was like she couldn't imagine it being a good one.
"We'll be making pancakes, can you grab me 2 eggs from the fridge, Mij- Hunter?"

"What's a pancake?" His voice was much smaller when he wasn't using that automated tone.
Camilla paused for a moment, slightly shocked to hear that the kid had never experienced the delight that was pancakes.
"It's like a flattened cake but still very fluffy." She spoke matter-of-factly, assuming it was the typical curiosity of a kid.
"Cake?" A childlike ingenuousness now taking root in the once stoic kid, revealing his age earnestly.
"Like what you have at a birthday party!"
"Birthday?"
"H-have you never celebrated your birthday before?"
To that aghast question Hunter simply shrugged. Camila's heart broke into even more pieces than she had thought possible. A wave of shock poured through her.
Where did this kid come from? Why hasn't anyone come searching for him?
Perhaps it was pointless to dwell on aimless questions. He was there now, safe and sound. If his parents hadn't come looking for him, maybe they never would. Maybe they were meant to find each other. Whether this was the work of an unknown benevolence or simply coincidence, this was her responsibility now. She couldn't say it yet, that he was her's. That she'd go to hell and back just to keep him safe from whatever nightmares he came from.
Nor did she know, she may very well have to because he had a home there. Nay, just a gulag vacant of any personal warmth. For the time being it was his world for her to show him.
"How about I just show you instead? Did you get the eggs from the fridge?"
He shook his head in acknowledgement, almost a little too eagerly. She thought he was going to give himself a concussion with how vigorously he nodded.
"Gracias Hunter, would you like to crack them into the bowl here?" She extended to him with a soft smile.
He stood blank as ever, though seemingly quizzical at the prompt. He had never been allowed to decide for himself. Always given commands, never choices. Camilla had already picked up on his tendency towards indecision and so followed her previous question with a gentle nudge.
"Here let me show my special technique to keep the shells out of the bowl!" She then with ease cracked one egg in half, not a single piece where it didn't belong. She then grabbed the second egg off the counter and held it out to Hunter. Her movements slow and cautious, stopping many inches before reaching the child. Hunter was just short of Luz's height and so, too, needed the help of the step-stool. He was admittedly skittish at first to step onto it which left him a smidge embarrassed when in comparison to his many previous feats. Camilla, however, did not seem to treat him any less for his timid demeanor and in fact encouraged him the entire time. His attempt was quite stilted and left several fragments of shell within the bowl. However, Camilla didn't have the heart to make it known. Instead she offered him a celebratory cheer that she attempted to keep at a low volume for fear of startling him. And for the first time since him arriving there, he had a satisfactory smile on his face. Finding the gap between his front teeth very endearing.
After this small victory she stirred the mixture and poured it into the lightly oiled pan. Camilla took control of the cooking which left Hunter less than pleased; if only for a short moment before the feeling was cast aside by excitement as he witnessed the liquid grow in size and find its newfound shape. Soon, the fluffy bread was placed softly on a plate then another and another. However, Camilla wanted Hunter to get the first bite. So, before taking the plates to the dining table she cut a small bite drizzled in syrup and handed it to him.
He was mesmerized by the sweet smell that filled his lungs. The food itself looked rather plain in its tan color but soft like a pillow nonetheless. He hesitated at first, knowing his luck he'd choke before he got to enjoy it. But, that moment he took his first bite, oh the world spun. It was different this time, he wasn't drowning in anxiety. It was welcoming, it was safe. Like he had clawed his way into heaven and this was the welcome gift. The taste was sweeter than anything he had ever eaten, of course he was mostly used to gruel and rations. He wished he could live in this moment forever, bask in the delight.
Camilla's face glowed as she watched the young boy grin ear to ear as he bit into the piece. She took it as a good sign from the look on his face. It didn't take long till she heard the familiar sound of footsteps from the stairwell.
"Buenos días, Mija! Hunter and I made pancakes!" With a smile she gave a little nod towards the boy. She then followed her words up with "We were just about to settle at the table."
"Eeeee! I love pancakes! You're the bestest mom ever!" The girl squealed at a nearly deafening decibel.
"Hey, don't forget Hunter helped too!" She said with a cheeky smile and side eye.
"Hehe, thank you too Hunter!"
"Uhh- yes." He said, not knowing the proper response to that statement.
"You're welcome Mija. Now, let's eat before I have to be at work and Luz at school. Oh, by the way, are you going to be ok here alone Hunter? I will make sure to check up on you every few hours on the phone and I will return for lunch just for a few minutes to make you something to eat. I'm sorry I have to leave you here, it's only until I can figure out what to do with you!"
"I'll be ok Ma'a- *ahem* Miss Camilla! I can make my own food, you do not need to worry about me." He said back in his unusually robotic manner.
"Oh well, I'm still going to be returning for lunch because I want to make you something to eat. Also, do you know how to use the phone Hunter?"
He just shook his head timidly, seemingly embarrassed by how useless, no, how helpless he was. Camilla just gently extended her hand in a beckoning motion, not bothered by his lack of knowledge and went over how to dial and view voicemails on the house phone. After which she gathered her bag full of vet supplies and lots of paperwork. Luz followed close in tow donning a purple backpack covered in glitter and animal stickers. Before entering the car Camilla gave Hunter an affectionate wave with Luz following suite shortly after but with much more enthusiasm. Then they were off and Hunter was alone.

"Ok. I shouldn't be crying. Why am I crying? If un- I mean Belos, saw this he would…" His voice began to trail off.
"But he isn't here. He's not coming for me is he?" He knew the thought was absurd. His uncle, he was unsure if that was even the truth, was going to kill him. Why would he want to see him again? Why did he…want him?
All those years spent deprived of warmth, affection, and genuine care. That's true but then Hunter couldn't help but cling to a fond memory or two. That his youth wasn't always spent wallowing beneath the pressure of success. That there were times where his uncle was an uncle and not the ruthless, unforgiving ruler he left behind the portal.
"Would you like to hear a story, Hunter? There once was a man, much like me in stature. He traveled a long way between worlds. Well, he came from a world much different from ours. One where the grass was green and the rain didn't singe and sting. The sky shone blue and rainbows didn't harm you. "Oh baby, it's ok! I'm here now." Her voice dropped to a soft timber and she approached him swiftly but cautiously. She extended her arms out but did not lean in, instead letting him choose whether to approach her or not. She hadn't expected him to be responsive to her so soon after his life had just been upended. Yet, he practically leaped into her arms, rubbing his snot covered face into her scrubs. It was a good thing she was a veterinarian because her outfit was designed for all sorts of bodily fluids to end up on it.
When she had originally only planned on stopping by for a few minutes, it soon became hours as she didn't dare abandon the scared boy. Eventually, the tears slowed down as he had calmed down. He clung to her like a life jacket unwilling to separate.
"Oh mijo, I'm so sorry for leaving you here alone. I think I have some vacation days left; I won't make this mistake again. I'm gonna be right here with you until you are properly settled." She spoke remorsefully.
Hunter sniffled, still unable to form words from the distress. He did, however, finally release his death grip on her and backed away.
"I have an idea, how would you like to try a new treat? You don't have to if you don't want to but it's something most kids your age really like. It's called ice cream." She asked gently, and sure it was presumptuous to assume he didn't know what ice cream was but based on the previous interactions she had with him, he wasn't exposed to a lot of normal things.
"I s-scream? Is it going to hurt me?" He spoke while cowering behind a pillow
"No, no! Of course not, it's a dessert! It's really cold and sweet! I promise I won't let anything hurt you. It's ok if you don't feel up to it right now. We can stay home and watch a movie if you'd like instead."
"N-no! I want to try i-scream." He spoke clearly, still unable to enunciate the food's name.
So, Camilla picked out some of Luz's nicest clothes for Hunter to wear before they went out. Then she guided the boy to her car. He was, of course, hesitant to enter the vehicle as he had never seen something like it before and thought it to be some sort of beast. Eventually with some coaxing Camilla managed to convince him to be brave and give it a try.
Miss Camila commanded this beast earlier, but how? It doesn't feel warm or alive…
With the click of the key, it admits a loud roar. One that mimics the familiar beasts of Hunter's former home. It left him jumping in fear at the surprising noise. Yet, he resists the urge to flee despite his instinct. Some part of him still belonged to the Emperor who would've scolded him for such actions. He had to admit her control of the beast was masterful. Against his better judgement, he trusted her. He felt like it was the right thing to do. She took him to a place with a sign naming it "Dairy Queen".
"Ok, you sta- you know what, why don't come with me?" She seemed conflicted but she was hellbent on not leaving him again. She covered his ears with a beanie and hoped no one would comment on his eye color. She was still unsure about where he was from but it had to be genetic. Fantasy was called fantasy for a reason, it's not real. There's no monsters or ghouls, no vampires or witches.
Hunter had taken a complete 180 from the day prior. He stuck by her side like he needed it to breathe. However, that was not enough as they entered. The lights were too bright, the people spoke too loud. Curling into himself with palms to his ears. It didn't take long for Camilla to notice but luckily she was prepared. She was familiar with Luz's sensory issues that would arise when they were out sometimes. She always carried a pair of noise cancelling headphones to help block out the noise. She lowered herself to his level and with a slow approach slid them over his head. The place was still overbearing to his senses but the headphones made it manageable. Finally they made it to the counter.
"What can we help you with today?" The cashier was perky as she spoke.
"Wh-" She caught herself remembering Hunter probably didn't know any of the flavors and would probably be too overwhelmed to answer. So, instead she picked a plain vanilla cone for him as she figured it would be manageable and not too overwhelming for his first experience with the frosty treat. For herself she ordered a hot fudge sundae. Hunter didn't seem to understand the concept of licking the ice cream as it began to melt.
"You have to lick it! Otherwise it will melt."
He hesitantly stuck out his tongue, and held it there for an abnormally long time as he stared down the cone. Eventually he made contact with vanilla soft serve swirl. His eyes became stars, large and bright. He started lapping it up then took a bite and immediately winced. Holding the cone away from his body as exclaimed in pain.
"I-it hurt me." His voice was so small, not like it had been before. Like the child he was, helpless and fearful.
"Oh sweetheart, that's called a brain freeze. You can't eat ice cream too fast or that will happen. I promise you'll be fine as long as you eat it slowly." She reassured
He paused for a moment, glancing between her and the cone. He then cautiously continued licking the cone. The rest of the time was spent in silence as they both enjoyed their desserts. There was just one last surprise she had for him. By the time they arrived back home it was getting dark outside. Luz had been invited to a sleepover and wasn't home. So, rather than go inside she beckoned for Hunter to follow her into the forest. She took him to a clearing covered in flowers but that wasn't the part she wanted him to see. As the sky became a shadow in the twilight, out came little blips of light. Hunter was skittish but became enamored with the show in front of him. It was better than anything he'd seen on the T.V.
"These are called fireflies, they come out at night to light up the forest." Her voice filled with adoration towards the creatures
"They are like mini stars." For the first time since they had met, his voice was calm. He was calm and his eyes twinkled in the insect's glow.

"They are like mini stars." For the first time since they had met, his voice was calm. He was calm and his eyes twinkled in the insect's glow.
It was getting late but she wanted to let him stay as long as he felt like to admire the fireflies. Eventually he let out a small yawn and she decided it was time to head back. So, she turned on her phone's flashlight and let them back.
"Did you have fun today Hunter?"
"What is fun?"
"It's when you do exciting things and they make you happy."
"Oh. This was the funnest day of my life. I never had fun back at home. I don't ever want to go back." He spoke passively.
Camilla would've followed his remarks up but it was late and she didn't want to ruin his fun. She didn't know where he came from or how bad it truly was. But now, she knew she would never let him go back. If this was his first time being happy, she wouldn't let it be his last.
"Goodnight, Hunter. Sweet dreams."
"Goodnight, mom."

Come nightfall, it felt like the first brief moment of peace they had in awhile. It was quiet and the house was still. Like the world had froze over and all movement ceased. Like they were in the eye of a hurricane...
"Has the traitor been dealt with, Kikimora?" A voice boomed across the room with commanding presence
"W-well sir, not quite, the golden guard escaped. B-but we retrieved this key he stole!"
"You let him get away?" The rumble of his voice almost sent Kikimora tumbling to the ground
"Sir, you must underst-" She wavered in desperation
"Silence. It seems incompetence runs deep within these walls. Worry not, it shall be handled." His voice interjected with a loud, commanding echo that tapered into a minacious tone.
"Now leave my presence before I regret not relinquishing you of your position." He spoke with a growl
Belos paced the rugged, cracked floor of his lair. He searched high and low of that dim lit dungeon but could not find it. There was none left. He had no more pieces left of that long distorted image of a friend to which he clung. All that was left were the burning memories and the desperation to hold onto someone long since passed. He could not clone another Hunter. He could not clone another Caleb.
All those years ago, when he sacrificed everything for one goal. His brother didn't understand. How could he? He was bewitched by a witch and stolen from him. He had to save him.
"I will save you, Caleb."
"We demand justice!

Where is the Golden Guard!"
Outside the castle walls protesters chanted angrily. With the public growing restless from the silence at the castle, there was no choice but to back-track on his decision to discard his phony nephew. Unfortunately, Hunter was still missing and there was still no word on his whereabouts. Guards feebly managed to hold back the growing crowd but they won't be able to hold forever. It had been three days since Hunter's disappearance. The news was not meant to be released to the public; someone behind palace walls was responsible for the leak. There was a traitor among the governing officials. Of course, this was no surprise to the emperor. He would be dealing with the oncoming usurpers just as soon as he soothed the public conscious of his transgressions.

The Boiling Isles were filled with agitation; they felt betrayed by their emperor. How could he let his newest right hand disappear only months after his ennobling? How long had he planned on keeping this hidden?
There was only one option. He knew what he must do.
The crickets chirped, filling the still air of the forest. Nearby, the sounds of a creek flowing fervently. Leaves rustled and twigs cracked beneath the hooves of running deer in fear, from the creaking of old wood floor paneling. Footsteps echoed on rusty nails and rotten ply.
"Nice to be home."
Not a sound could be heard behind the doors of that house. The soft breaths of a sleeping family, calm and unperturbed. For the first time since Manny's death the house felt whole. Luz was smiling and laughing like a little kid again. She always struggled with making friends but now she finally had one. And Camilla, she saw herself in him. He was so much like her when she was that age. He was quiet and awkward and unsure of himself just like she was. That was until Manny came into her life. He was everything she wasn't and that scared her. He was her biggest fear and he showed her how to conquer him. She was going to show this kid how to live even if it killed her.
"You've let me down again. You know there must be punishment for such failure."
Hunter stood paralyzed in the past he could never leave.
"Kneel before me and accept the consequences of your actions."
Unlike before when he was nothing but an obedient lap dog for the emperor, Hunter ran. He ran until his legs were numb and his lungs stung from the cold air of the night. Past the lofty gates that once kept him trapped like an animal bred to fight. The last words of the person he once proclaimed uncle reverberating in his head.
"Return to me, Hunter."
He heard it clearly. It was louder and had more clarity. His familiar voice sounded unsettlingly close. It no longer felt like just a nightmare, it was real. But when he opened his eyes he was in the same room that soft hands laid him to sleep. A soothing voice cooed goodnight, and he felt like he could be safe again.
"You don't belong here"
The sound grew nearer, leaving Hunter to start doubting that it was in his head at all.

Despite his self-assuring thoughts he felt the panic crawl up him. He abandoned everything for the selfish desire to live. His Uncle had every right to kill him. Still, it was only instinct to survive even though it meant he was never going home. It was guilt that swirled his mind. Yeah, he was guilty. There's no teaching an old dog new tricks but he wasn't old. He was only a kid and he didn't know but he had his whole life left to live. The memories of old wounds would heal though they would leave marks like the fingers once gripping his arms. The tendrils of panic constricted around his neck. He was suffocating.

"GO BACK!!" His scream shrill and on the verge of breaking
A sound loud enough to be heard around the world, or at least throughout the Noceda household. Surely, there was the hurried footsteps of a distressed mother. It was only instinct, she was to him in 30 seconds flat. Well… almost.
A soft voice broke through the echoes in his skull. Her silhouette composed of fuzzy edges approaching heedlessly.
"Oh Caleb , I'm here now. Come here."
His voice was completely useless and eyes full of tears. His vision so blurry he didn't even notice the blue tint in her eyes. He could barely move his shaking body. He wanted to be wrapped in her gentle arms but he was paralyzed by fear.
"Oh Hunter, it'll be alright now that I'm here."
"I said come here." Her voice sounded much more forceful but it still had her soft timbre
Hunter managed to crawl to her despite his quivering arms and he didn't mind her intense tone because he knew she was safe. She wouldn't hurt him like his uncle had. So, he wiggled into her arms, happy to feel the warmth and safety he had never known before.
Her voice, a blended mix of a kind and loving mother, and a cold, familiar imperatorial tone. He didn't have time to process the change from tranquil to emphatic in her voice as he felt his eyes grow heavy.

"Time for you to come home, my dear brother."
He lifted the small boy over her shoulders and speedily carried him down the stairs. He made his way through the near deafening silent forest. There was no chirping from crickets or hooting from owls. The deer did not step. There was no creature in sound or sight. All of them afraid of a predator that would surely kill them.
Belos carried Hunter's body upon Camila's shoulder as made his way to the portal. He had collected his prize and was ready to display it to the isles. He was never going to let Hunter get away again.
They arrived at the cabin where Belos finally relinquished Camila's body. She wouldn't be awake for another few hours and by then they'd be long gone. So, with one last look at the place he once called home and the people he had long since left those years ago, Belos stepped back through the portal as it warbled with Hunter in his arms. The sounds much like that of boiling a pot. Glistening like the reflection of a still pond till it was hit with the splash of rocks as they skipped upon its surface. Like an oil slick that contained the entire spectrum of light in a kaleidoscope of colors.
Outside the glowing door laid the unconscious body of a woman much kinder than he deserved. At least that was what he was taught. She was patient, kind, and far too welcoming. She was a savior for the scared and helpless but there's one lesson that every veterinarian must learn in time. You can't save everyone.
She may not have been able to but her daughter was no doctor. She was familiar with death and that's why she couldn't let him go. She already lost her father, she wasn't going to lose her brother as well. Peeking out from behind a bush as she watched the towering man carry her new sibling beyond the luminous threshold. Luz was determined and never knew when to quit. To most, it was a dangerous trait that would get her hurt or killed, but it could also save the day. As the bubbling portal began to close, she snuck through, just behind the abductor. She was going to save her brother.

"Welcome home, my dear nephew."
His eyes were barely cracked open when the voice spoke. His head ached, but the familiar, gravely tone broke through his grogginess.
"Wha…what happened?" He jolted. This couldn't be real.
"Is that how you greet your uncle? Perhaps living amongst humans has made you forget your manners, nephew."
"Where's Camilla? Luz? This has to be a nightmare, yeah, just a nightmare!" Tears were already pricking at the corners of his eyes. He had forgotten to hide his emotions during his time in the human world.
"Oh Hunter, did you really think those humans cared for you? You poor child, that 'mother' of yours is who returned you to me." His voice was laced with callous indifference
"You're lying! She would never do that! Sh-she cared for me." He let out with a shriek
"You really are quite gullible. You were nothing but a burden to that poor woman, just as you have been to me. Did you really believe someone could care for such an incompetent creature as yourself? Only I could love a child as pathetic as you."
"Th-that's…not-" It was barely an audible mumble, shaky and painful.
"Oh my poor Hunter, don't you worry, now that you are home, things can go back to normal. I have decided to forgive your past… infractions as long as you return to your position as Golden Guard."
"Wh- what. I can't! I can't go b-"
"Shut your mouth, child. Don't you dare speak so defiantly to your Emperor. It seems you have forgotten your manners. I didn't expect your lessons to be untangled in such a short time of separation. No matter, I shall make sure you don't forget again." He spoke with a growl reminiscent of a hunting wolf.
Hunter wanted to speak, plead, cry all the same, so desperately. Yet, all his words were contained in his throat. He knew what was coming, but the way the Emperor spoke, he could tell it would be worse than it had ever been. He tried so hard not to be afraid, something he was taught long ago.

"When will you learn, you needn't defy me."

"If you would just listen, I wouldn't need to punish you."
Whap, whap
"Why don't you understand? I am just trying to save you."
Whap, shing
"Why couldn't you just listen to me, CALEB!"
The barrage only became harsher. His uncle's voice turned into a visceral rasp as his screaming grew louder. Hunter was now on the ground, new cuts forming around his arms, body, and face. He could no longer fight the tears forming; everything was a blur. Yet, he did not fight it. This was his fault, he earned this. His body ached; he could feel his head throbbing.
"STAND UP AND TAKE YOUR PUNISHMENT!"
Despite his wishing for it to end, it seemed Belos wasn't nearly ready to end this attack. Hunter felt his throat closing on him, but still gave one last desperate plea. If Belos didn't want to kill him, he needed to stop this now, or Hunter was gonna die anyway.
"I- c-can't" His voice barely an audible whisper.
"YOU BRAT, YOU WILL LISTEN TO MY ORDERS!"
WHAP
Puke bubbled up and out. Hunter lay in a pool of his vomit, tears, and blood. Belos stopped for a brief moment, seeming to calm down a little. However, it was very short-lived as his rage reignited with a flashback of his dead brother, who lay in a similar way. This would surely be Hunter's end.
Belos lifts his arm, if it could be called that. A long green tendril, whip-like in shape. Then, as he prepares to finish his nephew for good, the door bursts open.
"Sir, you need to see this!"
Those words seemed to break Belos out of his trance. He returned to his former shape, donning an elegant look.
"Do lead the way and make it quick." He strutted without so much as a second glance towards Hunter's way. There was no remorse reflected in his face.
An iridescent swirl stood before her. She had never seen such an array of colors before. She wasn't exactly easily unnerved and was known on more than one occasion to seek out the danger. However, there was an ever-growing pit that filled her stomach upon the sight of the door. It didn't help that her mother lay unconscious just at the entrance, marked with off colored lines. Though it was a good thing Luz didn't freeze in fear as she charged right through in the hopes of not losing track of her newfound brother and his captor. She didn't have to think about the condition of her mother; she chose to believe she'd be ok. After all, Camilla was the strongest person she knew. Upon her less-than-grand entrance, she was greeted by sleek white walls traced with golden moulding. She quickly exited into the hallway as she had already lost sight of her targets. The halls were lined with large, similarly golden banners marked with a wide variety of unfamiliar symbols. Each flag bore a different color alongside its symbol and a different looking creature beneath it. It seemed as though they represented some sort of power structure. At the end of the hall was a significantly larger banner that donned a light amber triangle at the center. A sword pierced the center and wings sprouted from the sides of the triangle. Unlike the previous hanging decorum, this one displayed no individual beneath its emblem. With its theme matching the rest of the castle, it appeared to be of higher importance or regard than the other flags.
Dang, I lost them, and now I'm lost as well. What even is this place? It looks so fancy, like- like a castle. Is Hunter a secret witch prince? Gah, focus, Luz, you need to find your brother.
"Well well well, what do we have here? I don't seem to recognize that rotten little face. And those ears, you're a human. What a disgusting creature."
Luz didn't even have a chance to respond as the aged figure continued on her tirade.
"You don't belong here, human. The dungeon will be a much more suitable place for a lowly creature such as yourself." Her voice was pure malice while she summoned large, burly vines to confine Luz until the guards could take her away.
This was Luz's first encounter with magic, and it certainly wasn't a pleasant one. The vines that surround her pierced her with blade-like thorns. She could feel them cut into her skin, leaving her unable to wiggle out for the fear of being sliced more. There was a warm sensation around the abdomen that she could only assume was blood. With no hope of escape, she resigned herself to her fate. Of course, Luz doesn't give up that easily. She was planning her escape for once she was in the dungeon.
Chirp, chirp, chirp
A warm glow peers beyond the hundreds of leaves of pine trees. The diurnal animals have all begun to awake. Her skin was golden in the light, marred by the stripes of an unruly and unjust man. She lay motionless on barely anchored steps of the old, run-down cabin. A small trail of ants skitters about the curves of where her body remains.
First, there's a twitch. A small move of the fingers. Soon, it's a tentative grab towards the ground. Her eyes open with a groan, and the house mimics. With her hands planted on the floor, she pushes up. She sits stationary, her sore limbs weighing heavily. It takes a moment for her eyes to adjust to the sun. However, it doesn't take long for her to recall the events of last night. She may not have been in control, but her memory remained intact. She was horrified; how could she not be? Her body hurt, but the pain in her heart was doubled. There was a flood of tears that filled her face. She wanted to crumble all over again, curl into the ground. Instead, she stood once more. She would find her children and save her son. And she knew just the place to begin.
The floors were harsh and cold as she awoke surrounded by grey. Her clothes were stained with dried crimson, but her wounds seemed to have healed more than the natural limits of her body. She made herself acquainted with the room that surrounded her. It was then she spotted a lever just outside the bars of her cell. Maybe it was her way out.
Maybe I can reach the lever through the bars.
Fortunately, she was able to reach it from behind the bars. Unfortunately, she was far too weak to feasibly lift it herself. However, there may have been another option for escape as she spots an older-looking woman with spiky grey hair and ears much like Hunter's, accompanied by a tiny brown owl. The woman's face exuded confidence, but the pace of her movements seemed frantic. It didn't take long for her to hear a voice echo out from behind the bars of another cell.
Eda, I'm over here! Help me!
The witch wasted no time rushing over to the girl's voice. She lifted the lever with ease, and out stepped the mystery voice. A girl with the body of a large slug- A BASILISK! Luz could recognize that body anywhere. She had always found them so fascinating after first discovering them in The Good Witch Azura. However, she seemed much smaller and almost fragile compared to the creatures described in the books.
Come on, kid, we don't have much time before the guards arrive.
It was then the little owl that followed the witch so closely morphed into a staff. She and the girl both hopped onto it as it magically hovered.
"WAIT! Please, help me!" Her voice was small and apprehensive
"Gah, we don't have time for this; the guards are already on their way."
"Come on, Eda, we can at least open the cell. We can't leave another helpless creature behind!"
"Alright, kid, but I'm not taking home another one of you. I already have enough kids to care for."
It was settled. The witch approached the bars and peered through. Her gaze was unsettling, like she was looking straight through Luz.
"Well, what do we have here? A human. Well, we ain't got time to ask questions. Here ya go, kid!" The witch speaks casually as she lifts the lever without trouble.
"Wait, please take me out of here! Then you- you can leave me alone. I just need to get out of this castle."
"Listen, kid, I don't know if Owlbert here will be able to carry this many folks."
Whoo
She sighs, "But it looks like he is willing to try. Hop on and make it quick."
With that all out of the way, Luz hops on just behind the basilisk girl. She barely manages to hold on as the bird staff speeds off. Now, in the clouds, Luz wobbles a little after looking down. Still, she can't help but find herself enamored by the view. The world was better than anything she had ever read. Her train of thought was quickly broken, though, as the witch made a quick landing outside a shack-like house.
"Alright, kid, I don't know how you got to this world, but you are very far away from the castle now. So, get going!"
Luz was still dazed by everything but managed to hesitantly walk away from the building. Behind her, Vee looked at Eda with puppy dog eyes. It seemed she was silently pleading for Eda to let the girl stay with them. And of course, how could Eda say no to that face?

"Where's Camilla? Luz? This has to be a nightmare, yeah, just a nightmare!" Tears were already pricking at the corners of his eyes. He had forgotten to hide his emotions during his time in the human world.
"Oh Hunter, did you really think those humans cared for you? You poor child, that 'mother' of yours is who returned you to me." His voice was laced with callous indifference
"You're lying! She would never do that! Sh-she cared for me." He let out with a shriek
"You really are quite gullible. You were nothing but a burden to that poor woman, just as you have been to me. Did you really believe someone could care for such an incompetent creature as yourself? Only I could love a child as pathetic as you."
"Th-that's…not-" It was barely an audible mumble, shaky and painful.
"Oh my poor Hunter, don't you worry, now that you are home, things can go back to normal. I have decided to forgive your past… infractions as long as you return to your position as Golden Guard."
"Wh- what. I can't! I can't go b-"
"Shut your mouth, child. Don't you dare speak so defiantly to your Emperor. It seems you have forgotten your manners. I didn't expect your lessons to be untangled in such a short time of separation. No matter, I shall make sure you don't forget again." He spoke with a growl reminiscent of a hunting wolf.
Hunter wanted to speak, plead, cry all the same, so desperately. Yet, all his words were contained in his throat. He knew what was coming, but the way the Emperor spoke, he could tell it would be worse than it had ever been. He tried so hard not to be afraid, something he was taught long ago.
Whap
"When will you learn, you needn't defy me."
Whap
"If you would just listen, I wouldn't need to punish you."
Whap, whap
"Why don't you understand? I am just trying to save you."
Whap, shing
"Why couldn't you just listen to me, CALEB!"
The barrage only became harsher. His uncle's voice turned into a visceral rasp as his screaming grew louder. Hunter was now on the ground, new cuts forming around his arms, body, and face. He could no longer fight the tears forming; everything was a blur. Yet, he did not fight it. This was his fault, he earned this. His body ached; he could feel his head throbbing.
"STAND UP AND TAKE YOUR PUNISHMENT!"
Despite his wishing for it to end, it seemed Belos wasn't nearly ready to end this attack. Hunter felt his throat closing on him, but still gave one last desperate plea. If Belos didn't want to kill him, he needed to stop this now, or Hunter was gonna die anyway.
"I- c-can't" His voice barely an audible whisper.
"YOU BRAT, YOU WILL LISTEN TO MY ORDERS!"

Puke bubbled up and out. Hunter lay in a pool of his vomit, tears, and blood. Belos stopped for a brief moment, seeming to calm down a little. However, it was very short-lived as his rage reignited with a flashback of his dead brother, who lay in a similar way. This would surely be Hunter's end.
Belos lifts his arm, if it could be called that. A long green tendril, whip-like in shape. Then, as he prepares to finish his nephew for good, the door bursts open.
"Sir, you need to see this!"
Those words seemed to break Belos out of his trance. He returned to his former shape, donning an elegant look.
"Do lead the way and make it quick." He strutted without so much as a second glance towards Hunter's way. There was no remorse reflected in his face.
An iridescent swirl stood before her. She had never seen such an array of colors before. She wasn't exactly easily unnerved and was known on more than one occasion to seek out the danger. However, there was an ever-growing pit that filled her stomach upon the sight of the door. It didn't help that her mother lay unconscious just at the entrance, marked with off colored lines. Though it was a good thing Luz didn't freeze in fear as she charged right through in the hopes of not losing track of her newfound brother and his captor. She didn't have to think about the condition of her mother; she chose to believe she'd be ok. After all, Camilla was the strongest person she knew. Upon her less-than-grand entrance, she was greeted by sleek white walls traced with golden moulding. She quickly exited into the hallway as she had already lost sight of her targets. The halls were lined with large, similarly golden banners marked with a wide variety of unfamiliar symbols. Each flag bore a different color alongside its symbol and a different looking creature beneath it. It seemed as though they represented some sort of power structure. At the end of the hall was a significantly larger banner that donned a light amber triangle at the center. A sword pierced the center and wings sprouted from the sides of the triangle. Unlike the previous hanging decorum, this one displayed no individual beneath its emblem. With its theme matching the rest of the castle, it appeared to be of higher importance or regard than the other flags.
Dang, I lost them, and now I'm lost as well. What even is this place? It looks so fancy, like- like a castle. Is Hunter a secret witch prince? Gah, focus, Luz, you need to find your brother.
"Well well well, what do we have here? I don't seem to recognize that rotten little face. And those ears, you're a human. What a disgusting creature."
Luz didn't even have a chance to respond as the aged figure continued on her tirade.
"You don't belong here, human. The dungeon will be a much more suitable place for a lowly creature such as yourself." Her voice was pure malice while she summoned large, burly vines to confine Luz until the guards could take her away.
This was Luz's first encounter with magic, and it certainly wasn't a pleasant one. The vines that surround her pierced her with blade-like thorns. She could feel them cut into her skin, leaving her unable to wiggle out for the fear of being sliced more. There was a warm sensation around the abdomen that she could only assume was blood. With no hope of escape, she resigned herself to her fate. Of course, Luz doesn't give up that easily. She was planning her escape for once she was in the dungeon.
Chirp, chirp, chirp
A warm glow peers beyond the hundreds of leaves of pine trees. The diurnal animals have all begun to awake. Her skin was golden in the light, marred by the stripes of an unruly and unjust man. She lay motionless on barely anchored steps of the old, run-down cabin. A small trail of ants skitters about the curves of where her body remains.
First, there's a twitch. A small move of the fingers. Soon, it's a tentative grab towards the ground. Her eyes open with a groan, and the house mimics. With her hands planted on the floor, she pushes up. She sits stationary, her sore limbs weighing heavily. It takes a moment for her eyes to adjust to the sun. However, it doesn't take long for her to recall the events of last night. She may not have been in control, but her memory remained intact. She was horrified; how could she not be? Her body hurt, but the pain in her heart was doubled. There was a flood of tears that filled her face. She wanted to crumble all over again, curl into the ground. Instead, she stood once more. She would find her children and save her son. And she knew just the place to begin.
The floors were harsh and cold as she awoke surrounded by grey. Her clothes were stained with dried crimson, but her wounds seemed to have healed more than the natural limits of her body. She made herself acquainted with the room that surrounded her. It was then she spotted a lever just outside the bars of her cell. Maybe it was her way out.
Maybe I can reach the lever through the bars.
Fortunately, she was able to reach it from behind the bars. Unfortunately, she was far too weak to feasibly lift it herself. However, there may have been another option for escape as she spots an older-looking woman with spiky grey hair and ears much like Hunter's, accompanied by a tiny brown owl. The woman's face exuded confidence, but the pace of her movements seemed frantic. It didn't take long for her to hear a voice echo out from behind the bars of another cell.
Eda, I'm over here! Help me!
The witch wasted no time rushing over to the girl's voice. She lifted the lever with ease, and out stepped the mystery voice. A girl with the body of a large slug- A BASILISK! Luz could recognize that body anywhere. She had always found them so fascinating after first discovering them in The Good Witch Azura. However, she seemed much smaller and almost fragile compared to the creatures described in the books.
Come on, kid, we don't have much time before the guards arrive.
It was then the little owl that followed the witch so closely morphed into a staff. She and the girl both hopped onto it as it magically hovered.
"WAIT! Please, help me!" Her voice was small and apprehensive
"Gah, we don't have time for this; the guards are already on their way."
"Come on, Eda, we can at least open the cell. We can't leave another helpless creature behind!"
"Alright, kid, but I'm not taking home another one of you. I already have enough kids to care for."
It was settled. The witch approached the bars and peered through. Her gaze was unsettling, like she was looking straight through Luz.
"Well, what do we have here? A human. Well, we ain't got time to ask questions. Here ya go, kid!" The witch speaks casually as she lifts the lever without trouble.
"Wait, please take me out of here! Then you- you can leave me alone. I just need to get out of this castle."
"Listen, kid, I don't know if Owlbert here will be able to carry this many folks."
Whoo
She sighs, "But it looks like he is willing to try. Hop on and make it quick."
With that all out of the way, Luz hops on just behind the basilisk girl. She barely manages to hold on as the bird staff speeds off. Now, in the clouds, Luz wobbles a little after looking down. Still, she can't help but find herself enamored by the view. The world was better than anything she had ever read. Her train of thought was quickly broken, though, as the witch made a quick landing outside a shack-like house.
"Alright, kid, I don't know how you got to this world, but you are very far away from the castle now. So, get going!"
Luz was still dazed by everything but managed to hesitantly walk away from the building. Behind her, Vee looked at Eda with puppy dog eyes. It seemed she was silently pleading for Eda to let the girl stay with them. And of course, how could Eda say no to that face?
