Looking for a fic

I'm looking for a fic where a kid is an indentured mechanic pilot for a noble family but he actually enjoys fighting in his mech. The world is dystopian with robots and aliens attacking the planet. His ruler wants to recruit him but he just wants to fight mechs
I'm 90% certain that it was its own fic and not a snippet
