In an Earth not unlike our own but where magic and the supernatural are real and known, a young witch apprentice quest to earn a Big Boon from the local tribe of Pixies gets way more complicated that expected.
Sidestory 01: Gnomes New
[Underground in a Germanian Forest, Spring 1979]

• Jones the Librarian Assistant Gnome •

I used to be crazy about books when I was small, that changed as I got older and got more interested in human technology. But unfortunately we had to keep moving further and further away to keep away from the Trolls and once we finally found a place were we could stay long time I became an apprentice of the librarian... we actually found a library left behind by our ancestors!

No clue how the place stayed safe from Humans and Trolls so long but it probably was left behind so the future generations of us Gnomes would get knowledge and we happen to be one of those future generations!

The underground library of the Gnomes!

Well, the Mouse was the one who found it but I found the Mouse so in a way I helped to find it.

"This place... I dreamed about a place like this..." The Mouse said as me and the librarian followered the magical rodent as she explored the library; for the simple fact she would trigger any magical traps first and being the former mascot of as she said herself "A wizard named Timothy " she had more idea than us about magic.

"Wow... that clock is older that me!" The Mouse said pointing to a clockwork clock that somehow, probably magic, was still working. "Oh and there is strong preservation magic too, Is mixed with other stuff, whatever it is it smells Gnome like."

So besides the place being sized for Gnomes, the Mouse smelt Gnome magic, that was good; we had lost a lot of our non Deal Magic over the years, thanks to the darn Trolls and a few evil Humans.

Whatever magic it was however it had not keep dirt out, just preserved things, we had to clean the place for many weeks because the place has been practically buried in dirt, in fact we only found it thanks to the Mouse. If she keep helping us like this, our debt for saving her life would get paid fast and then we would have to negotiate some sort of payment to keep getting her help.

She wasn't exactly a real mouse so we weren't exactly sure what she would want.

At least the place had ventilation tunels that after getting cleaned up worked just fine. As Librarian Assistant got to skip doing most of the cleaning thankfully.

"I smell keys!" The Mouse said and then... stopped moving.

"Are you okay?" The librarian asked and then noticed the Mouse had fallen asleep. I stopped the old Gnome from waking the Mouse up.

"Let her sleep master, she more that earned her keep. In fact I would say we are almost even."

"Even, you say even boy? But we saved her life!"

"And how many lives do you think this library is worth master?"

"Good point, do we know what the Mouse eats? If she keeps helping we will have to start paying her somehow.A Gnome shouldn't be in debt for long after all and better to give her food that gold or silver."

"Not a real mouse so I guess we will just have to ask?" I stated the simple solution.

"You don't ask anything magical what they eat boy, not unless you want to be on the menu!" A very good point.

"How about indirectly then? We keep bringing different food; ask the Mouse if she wants to eat it and note what she likes and dislikes."

"That might work boy, now come I want to start to look for some kind of book index, your studied the old language didn't you?"

"Humans call it Latin."

"Bah! What do I care what big folk call things or their language?"

"So you read the labels before almost eating poison in a can again?"

"Jones will you always remember me that? It was one time!"

I picked a book at random "Magia Mus, compendium of magic involving mouses?I." Then I got the book taken away by the old librarian.

"Boy! Be careful! You don't know if these books are cursed or not!"

"Okay then don't touch the books directly... Then why are you doing it?"

"Gloves." He said showing his glove covered hands.

"I remember this book." The Mouse suddenly said. "The Wise seven worked together to write it. Then they.made me and then they sold me to a wizard for a lot of gold."

"How much gold are we talking about?" The librarian asked with greed in his eyes.

"Not enough gold, since not long after they had to hide the library as the Wizard betrayed them to the Trolls." The Mouse said in a sad tone.

"Oh... the curse of too much greed. Oh ancestors..." The librarian needed my help to not fall down.

"Jones... you were right, you told us to not sell the Mouse yet when we found her. You told me that it may be useful... and here we are, not only in our Ancestors library but the Mouse is an artifact they made and we have got the book that may explain how they made the Mouse. I am in your debt boy."

"Then teach me until the debt is paid in full."

"No teaching will not me enough. I am old, I have no relatives left so I am the eldest of my family, I will adopt you."

"What?"

"You more that earned it boy, so don't make me repeat myself. We will sign the papers tomorrow, now help me to a couch, we have a magic book to read!"
