(Partially) fixing the tag system

Something I didn't see get brought up is how the already tagged stories going to be affected.

Is the tag changing automatic? Are Authors going to manually go through their old fics and change the tags one by one? If so what about authors who no longer use this site for one reason or another?

This isn't going to change any tags currently on stories. The moderator is just manually sorting similar tags into buckets. So if you search for one of the 17 tags in a bucket, the search shows you every story that has any of the tags from that bucket.

Unify mis-spelt tags, as well. I don't remember the specifics, there used to be a misspelt self-insert tag that had some good stories tucked in it--though that might already have been fixed since I can't find it.

The various general Star Trek tags should probably be merged, as well as the tags for Star Wars and 2004 Battlestar Galactica.

I disagree, at least for Star Trek and Star Wars. The tags should remain separate for those, as the different time periods of both those universes have so much different that they're basically their own settings. After all, a Prequel fanfic is very different from an Original Trilogy fanfic or an Old Republic fanfic.

As far as I can tell, this will only affect how users search tags. This change should have no effect on already posted fanfics/quests

On another note, some other merger ideas:

Also, a word of caution. MCU can mean either Marvel Cinematic Universe or Mind Control University, so that acronym can't be merged with either one.

I'll just add that I have to agree with the comment on that SI/OC, SI and OC are distinct enough in meaning that they probably should not be merged into 1 tag. It's however not too big of and issue for me.

The fandom tags are way more annoying to me personally. Especially if you have too look through multiple search results with duplicates to see most of the fic's available. I saw that hero academia already had some suggestions, but to add:

There is a 'not mcu' tag so some people might want to have seperate Marvel and the MCU tags.

And finally if you type into the tag search the words 'porn' or 'plot' you also see a lot of tags that can probably be merged into 1 or 2.

This is awesome. It's such a problem when you want a fic and have to look it up in 4 slightly different categories.

I do have a question will this combination of tags affect the older stories? Or will it just delete the old tags and not replace them?

I personally wouldn't want ASOIAF and GOT grouped under the same tag. To me, there's a great similarity between the two, but there's also a big difference. This difference makes me not want to read anything about GOT.

I usually dont equate Villain protags with Evil protags, but other than that, this is definitely a good one to merge

I don't have any suggestions or things off the top of my head that haven't already been mentioned but I do want to extend a heartfelt thanks for even trying to tackling this nightmare.

The amount of times I've been trying to find a thread about whatever flavor of the month anime and it having like, sixty goddamn tags has driven me up the wall in recent times.

Outside of suggestions is there anything else I could do to help with this?

This is my concern too. Sure, in the backend, my guess is slapping in a junction table somewhere in the db or something.
But what about the practical implications?

In the case of...

I assume people will try to enter "cross over" and have it automatically converted to "crossover" instead. But what about the people who try to circumvent this? Who would go out of their way to tag "X-over" or "xover" or whatever else?

So, I assume the readers WON'T have the ability to report what they feel like is incorrect tagging, and the mods will just play whack-a-mole including user-generated tags for all eternity like some db admin Sisyphus?

If you look a few posts up from the post of yours that I'm quoting, you'll see a post where I explain it. The other tags should still exist and be usable, it's just that the search and filter functions will treat them all as being the same "parent" tag. Thus, the problem you're bringing up should never happen.

I thought "Slut Life" was "female MC goes on a multiversal TV show and chooses how she gets railed for the viewers' amusement" and only related to the Waifu Catalog due to the Company running both. Or am I misremembering?
