01: In which the Fopses get Death Game'd

Disclaimer:

It has come to my attention that this story is in need of a Disclaimer. Very well then, it seems I, Kitsu, must provide one posthaste, lest it become posthumously.

This story is a Collaborative Commission between TheLetter_A and KitsuneObsessedFreak, commissioned by Mitch-Mash — a fine friend indeed.

We must keep in mind, that while they may not be any direct lewding of the foxes in this story, due to budget constraints and TheLetter_A's increase in costs for more lewd fiction, there will be plenty of Ecchi moments, and a lot of violence, swearing, drug and alcohol abuse, mentions of Sexual Assault taken seriously and appropriately, Racism, cultural violence, war crimes, terrorism, War, mild cannibalism and mentions thereof, EXPLOSIONS, quite a lot of AU Content from series not named in the initial three for the start, and fictional politicking.

Indeed, this is an Alternate Universe Multicross of Sword Art Online, Disney's Treasure Planet, and Azur Lane, taken on the premise of "What if SAO, but Air and Space Pirates?"

Because boys will be boys, and Space Pirates are cool, sue me.

Now, if you see things in this story that do not align with what you believe to be canon, or details that you believe break your suspension of disbelief, take note that none of us care one whit about such things, and will simply press ignore on anyone complaining about a comedic crack fic they are reading for free on the internet not being 'realistic', as if Reality Itself was any more realistic at all.

There is a common saying: Truth is Stranger than Fiction. If you can't "Believe" that our fic is possible within the setting it's in, and thus needs to be spat upon, go read a history book. You'll be appalled.

That is all. Good day.

"Bro, check this out!" Akagi grinned, showing off the avatar he faithfully recreated from their memories of the game Azur Lane using the approved mod tools for Stars Above Online.

He still couldn't believe that he managed to argue an enforcement AI into approving his modlist for the game, along with a few mods his friend Kaga wanted for the game. It was going to be fun~

Sure, he was probably going to have issues if he played for hours on end every day, but this was a weekend only thing anyways. He had work to do for his publisher, and a small but loyal fanbase to entertain. It would be a bad idea to play for too long anyways.

"Akagi, fully voiced and modelled, just like she is supposed to be! I even got you a Kaga avatar so we can match in game!" he chuckled with Akagi's voice. "Transferring the files now, so don't be late~"

"Who? Me? Late? Never!" Kaga replied jokingly. "I'll also have my stuff over in a mo'."

"Niiice!" Akagi grinned. "Welp, I'm loading in now. [Link, Start!]"

The world transformed around her in a pixilated rainbow of data as she found herself settling into her new form. It was strange, whenever she played as a female character, at least at first. Especially when she was playing the role of one she had modeled in her head as much as she had this one.

But it was no matter. She would adapt, as she always had when it came to playing a role.

This was why she was popular amongst her fans after all~ She could get in the mindspace of her characters at the drop of a hat, and was fully willing to commit to the bit, even for those characters who made her… uncomfortable in a sense.

Just as she was thinking about how she was going to enjoy the feeling of being a shipgirl in a pirate ship game, and how the role would be near perfect for her to have a little fun with, Kaga digitized beside her with a dangerous smirk of her own.

"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get this bread," Kaga said with a grin.

"Hahaha, of course, Sister," Akagi grinned, winking at Kaga. "The hunting grounds are just past the starting gates, and our primary weapons are enough to see us through the first few areas. We will grow through combat and upgrades, just as all ships do."

"Indeed. May the strong prevail," Kaga replied airily. "And we certainly are strong."

"Well said~" Akagi grinned, floating up to get past the gates without needing to be bombarded with Quest NPCs.

"Waaaait!" a man with red hair and an old man beard waved to them as they turned to go, causing Akagi to pause.

"Well, what is it?" Akagi asked. "Surely a fox hasn't caught your tongue so easily?"

"Ahaha, It's just I'm new here, and you two seem to know what you're doing, so…" he claimed, his nametag of BallsDeep69 showing them everything they needed to know.

"Ara?" Akagi leaned forward with a little chuckle. "Are you sure you didn't just see us and decide that you wished to get to know us a little better~?"

"Ahaha, well," he sighed. "That too, but I really am a little lost."

"Well you're in luck," Akagi smirked. "As we are ships. We can carry you to where you wish to fight… for a price~"

"Woman's gotta eat somehow. And you won't get any better than us," Kaga added. "Of course, if you can't afford our fees, we can work out a deal~ Hmmm… How's 15% daily interest sound?"

"Fifteen per— What the hell kinda scam ring you two running?!" BallsDeep69 asked with an accusatory tone.

"Well, if you aren't willing to accept our generous offer, I'm sure you can find your way to the premium hunting grounds on your own~" Akagi licked her lips. "But you might want to hurry, or all the juicy EXP bonuses will simply be gobbled up by my dear Sister here~"

A new voice called out from the side. "Huh, didn't think your bullshitery would actually work Akagi," a black-haired swordsman smiled. "Gimme a lift, I'll owe you one later. Same deal as before."

"An unlimited favor from the Ultimate Swordsman Kirito, to use at my leisure? How can I say no~?" Akagi grinned, taking him into her arms and storing him in her hull.

"Well, BD? You coming with or nah?" Kaga asked. "There's only so much time in the day, and I don't know about you, but I'd rather spend that time killin'."

"I'm definitely going to regret this, but fuck it," BallsDeep69 responded, moving in close for Kaga to grab.

Once he was situated in Kaga's hull, Akagi smirked. "Let's make a party," the brown-haired foxgirl stated. "That way, we can share EXP, which will make it much more efficient to farm enemies early on."

"Ah, yep. Good idea," Kaga said, opening up her in-game menu. "Let's see here… right, invitation sent. Party name: The Ship Dits. You see it?"

"Alright~" Akagi chuckled, accepting her sister's party invitation with a grin.

"Now let's go take our Seamen and unleash them on the poor unsuspecting Pillager swarm~" Akagi laughed, floating up and out over the gate to her destination: a nearby small island they had yet to conquer.

T'was a glorious sight, Kaga thought, the sight of hellfire being rained down upon those barbarous pillagers. Whilst she and her 'sister' provided covering fire, their two accompaniments laid low any who sought to escape their wrath. Kirito performed as expected, and BallsDeep69 was surprisingly reliable. Perhaps she'd send BD a friend request later. Hmm.

After that bit of excitement, they opted to take a quick in-game snack break. Finding a nice tree to sit by, Kaga called the rest of them over to relax for a moment.

Akagi was quick to follow, opening her inventory and pulling out a freshly steamed bun with a smile. Then she opened it, and put a bit of butter on it.

Kaga then quickly took out an entire wheel of cheese. Quite honestly, she didn't know why she bought it, but it just made sense to her. And nothing was stopping her from doing something funny, so…

"A cheese wheel, really?" Kirito asked with a sigh. "You know that eating raw ingredients won't taste right in game by now, right?"

"What?" BallsDeep69 asked with a concerned face. "Does like, pizza count as an ingredient?"

"Anything the NPCs make counts as one, yes~" Akagi grinned. "But I'm sure my dear Sister will be fi— oh my god, did you just eat an entire cheese wheel in a single bite, Kaga?" she asked, breaking character for a moment.

"Hphm? Hwuh hyu phey?" Kaga asked with her mouth full, before swallowing. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Is that a shipgirl thing? Like how you shoved us into your tits to put us in your hull?" BallsDeep69 asked with a smirk.

"…Funny cheese man is doing funny cheese things?" Kirito asked with a tilt of his head.

Akagi sighed. "Well then~ It seems our playthrough just got significantly harder. Please pay the Cheese Tax when you board Kaga in the future, unless your name is MeatStick~"

"Hey! I resent that!" A random player in the distance yelled.

"I don't know what you guys are talking about, I'm just a normal individual doing normal things," Kaga said in an innocent tone. "Surely you have nothing to worry about. Normal things are afoot. Surely."

"Of course, Dear sister~" Akagi grinned, devouring her steamed bun. "Now excuse me while I steal a Pillager so I can hang him as a flag."

With that, she walked off and proceeded to annoy the respawned Pillagers.

Oh, a ping from her menu. Kaga quickly opened the notifications tab, and—

She suddenly found herself in a large open square with a whole bunch of fellow confused individuals, Akagi stood next to her.

"Hey, what's—" Kaga began, before a voice rang out and interrupted her.

"I've come to make an announcement," the voice stated as a hooded figure appeared in mid-air. "I am Kayaba Akihiko, the Game Master of Stars Above Online."

Murmurs spread across the crowd.

"Before I say anything further, I would like you all to test out the log out buttons," Kayaba said.

Opening up the menu, Kaga navigated to where the log out button should be… except there was no log out button. The button that was there was greyed out, and had no text. Pressing it did nothing. Holding it did nothing. Tapping it multiple times did nothing.

"Oh dear…" she quietly whispered to herself.

Around her, similar reactions rippled through the crowd. Kayaba visibly laughed at that.

"You may have realized, the log out button no longer works. I have disabled it. For you see, you are not playing a simple game anymore. You are all playing a game of my own design, where the stakes are… quite deadly," he giddily stated as he monologued. "I have done extensive testing on the NERV units you are all wearing, and have prepared them to suit my own designs. From now on, when you die in Stars Above Online, you will die in real life!"

"Damnit," Akagi muttered beside her. "I'm going to have sooo much work to catch up on when I help kill that man."

"Don't bother waiting for someone to unplug you from your devices, as that will also kill you. In fact, quite a few people have already died this way. So you will have to have trust in the people in real life, hmm?" Kayaba noted. "Oh yeah, and also, time in the game is accelerated by a factor of ten. You can experience a whole life in the game with it being only a year in real life. A mercy, really. That way you are less likely to pass away from any random terminal illness, or what have you."

Wait, that meant that they'd all be stuck in their avatars for who knew how long!

"And as for my last great act of interference…" Kayaba stated with gravitas, tapping away at his own in-game menu… he was tapping away at it rather furiously. Was he stuck on a feature or something? "Hmm. It seems I shall let you off on this one. I intended to force your character avatars into your real-life selves, to reduce anonymity as much as possible. However, it seems that someone has locked me out of the feature. I shall instead… bid you all a good day. Have fun murdering each other and whatnot,"

With that said, his avatar blipped out of existence in a flash of blue light. For a moment, everything stood still. The open square was quiet.

Then everyone started panicking.

TheLetter_A: Aaand that's the story started! Games are afoot, panic is spreading, and Kayaba has come to make an announcement.

Kitsu: Yes. The announcement is that Shadow the Hedgehog is a Bitchass motherfucker! Lol jk.

Anyways, yeah, we did good today I think. I got three chapters done from start to finish with the others, and finished one with TheLetter_A that was started the day before, I think I'm good now. Maybe. Possibly.

…Why do I wanna do another one?

TheLetter_A: Maybe you're just a workaholic with an absurd writing speed? I kinda wanna get dinner instead. I've still got leftover soup to finish off.

Kitsu: Go eeet.

Oh god.

Kaga witnessed all the players around her running around like headless chickens, a constant noise of panic hanging over all of them.

Oh shit.

Off in the distance, an orange-tagged player was fleeing the scene of his actual crime, several others in pursuit. Another player was bending down to seemingly pick at the corpse.

Oh fuck.

There were multiple players trying to calm things down and grab their fellows' attention, but they ended up speaking over each other and joining the noise instead. No doubt they'd be the first leaders to emerge, but the situation was still too fresh.

In short, everyone was panicking. Including Kaga, because though she may be strong, she was still a human being, goddamnit! She was allowed to be irrational when something like a videogame she played for recreation was turned a fucking Death Game!

Kaga didn't want to die!

"…We should go, Sister," Akagi said, lacing her fingers around Kaga's and pulling her away, her tails swishing uncomfortably. "Only chaos awaits us here, let us make haste to somewhere private."

And so they went. Flying to a small island not too far from the city, but too small for any enemies to spawn, they landed on a patch of grass. There was not a single player in sight.

Kaga immediately collapsed. She felt weak, her arms could barely hold her off the ground. Everything started spinning, as she started to heave. She couldn't puke, game probably wouldn't let her, but oh god did she feel like it. Ooooh, fuck…

"I… I dun wanna dieeee…" Kaga moaned as she started sobbing.

Akagi wrapped her in a hug, her warmth pressing against her as she did her best to comfort Kaga. "I know," the darker fox claimed, wiping Kaga's eyes before pressing the lighter fox's face to her chest. "But we have to be strong. We have to show people that we won't break, or we will become targets. We were beta testers. Hell, we joined during the pre-alpha! We helped build the Cardinal system. They'll think we were in league with him, so we need to be too strong for them to challenge."

"There- There were already PK-ers in the crowd… Orange Tags…" Kaga whimpered. "I'm good, anyone who's played for that long has to be, but I'm not that good! I- I…"

"Listen to me!" Akagi said, bringing Kaga's vision up to her face. "We don't have a choice. It's either we use what we know, what we built up over our time playing the game and finding exploits within we could make use of for our mods and improving our odds, or we die. And I'm not going to let you die."

Her face was one of determination, a fire that burned hotter with spite and anger. "Our bodies are those of Kaga and Akagi now. Their reputations in the world are terrifying due to the new Azur Lane anime… If we can use this, to leverage this and make it who we are, and project the utmost confidence, no one would dare mess with us. And if they do?"

She held up a plane talisman and grinned. "Then we make them regret ever having been born~"

…Fuck it, we ball.

Pushing herself off the ground, she wiped her face with her forearm– and collapsed back onto the grass.

Dirt tasted bad. 'Fuck it, we ball' can come later.

It was tiring work, trying his best to keep his fellow players alive nowadays. Normally Tiffany wouldn't be overly concerned with keeping noobie players from killing themselves, only offering tips, tricks and advice along with cafe fare, but these weren't normal times. Instead of just advice, he also offered to purchase and sell various resources and weapons, so that higher-leveled players could offload their post-grind junk, and lower-leveled players didn't have to risk their lives for said resources. It was working out pretty well in his book.

He and a few beta-buddies of his were even collecting knowledge together into a book, so that they could distribute it for the greater public to educate themselves for free.

Lately, however, he'd been hearing interesting rumors from his customers. Tales of a dynamic duo that were seemingly strong beyond strength, powerful beyond power, leaving islands ruined in their wakes. Of course, these were probably just hyped-up stories of a high-level duo. 'I mean, c'mon, you can't destroy naturally-spawned structures on the islands!'

However, it still left Tiffany with not a slight bit of curiosity towards those two. He might as well ask around, see if anyone had actually seen them.

Speaking of…

"Hey, Balls! You've been quite the customer recently. Got any stories to share?" Tiffany asked, leaning on his countertop.

"Hey! I told you Boss, just call me Klein," the man who named his avatar Ballsdeep69 laughed. "But man, I do actually have a pretty crazy one if you wanna hear it. You probably won't believe how lucky I got though."

"Heh, go ahead! If it's about who I think it is, then I might even throw in a rare and a few uncommons for your trouble," Tiffany replied as he began sorting through the shop's inventory.

"Haha, well, it all started when I let myself be scammed by these two foxy ladies," he chuckled, telling Tiffany a wild tale of how he ended up becoming a regular flyer with the two kitsune who had done their level best to level the islands.

"…And like, they're scary hot. They fight like maniacs, destroying the enemies without care for collateral damage, simply warning you to get out of the line of fire as they send their attacks and trusting you to get out of the way since the attack runs are actually not that fast. But when they hit the enemy, the enemy ceases to exist."

"…Sounds like a scarily impressive duo," Tiffany said diplomatically, after a moment of consideration. "You know, me and a few beta-tester buddies of mine, we're organizing this thing, to help newer and lower-level players survive. We're also planning a raid on the first boss in about two weeks time, but yeah. You think they'll consider joining up?"

"I think they'd be insulted if we didn't ask," Balls replied. "They seem like the type that would probably chase us for days if we tried to fight it without them, so we should probably let them in on it."

"Hah, fair 'nough. Mind sending 'em round here?" he asked.

Klein 'Ballsdeep69' laughed, "Sure! They were just taking a break and searching for a place to eat 'chimken nuggies', whatever those are, anyways."

Tiffany noted Klein opening up his UI and sending off a quick message. Rummaging through the Shop UI, he quickly traded over a few materials as thanks for the info.

Then the bell rang. "What's up, my homie!"

Ah fuck.

~~~~
"Kaga! I have discovered a place to eat chimpken nuggies!" Akagi smiled, pulling her sister towards a nearby shop. "Klein did well to send us the location of a restaurant owned by a player. Let's go eat!"
"Indeeeed, let's go!" Kaga cheered.
They entered the shop, noting the high-quality booze was behind lock and key behind cheaper booze as they entered, and that the Shop Owner was already well at work making Karaage. Which, was basically fancy chimpken nuggies.
"Oh my!" Akagi chuckled, making her way towards him. "It seems that this delightful shop owner has the recipe to something truly dangerous~"
"Hm. Indeed," Kaga hummed in agreement.
"So, you're the players I've heard so much about," the Shopkeeper stated. "Name's Tiffany. I've been meaning to ask you two a few questions, and maybe a favor or two."
"Oh?" Akagi giggled, holding her hand behind her sleeve, though she couldn't hide the wagging of her tails. "Then shall we talk business over some of your delicious Karaage?"
"Eat first, then we'll talk. I like dealing with customers over random players, you dig?" Tiffany said with a grin.
"Very well, we shall purchase three plates of Karaage, and a beverage," Akagi responded.
With this, their story would slowly begin. It was only a matter of time before they became famous, and then? They would truly be able to leverage their reputation.
TheLetter_A: Aaaand that's another chapter done! oh god im so tired. im gonna go to bed aftr this.
By the by, the reason why that guy in the post-Kayaba freakout was able to be killed despite being in a town is because Kayaba did a temporary funny. He's a cunt like that.
Kitsu: Sorry alphabet, but Mitch-Mash wanted a new chap, and so did I. We had the time, and i wanted to prove to you that you could get one done in a single night.
And now while I kinda feel bad, we did accomplish exactly that.
03: things idk
Tiffany watched as all the players shuffled into the meeting area. While most were chattering amongst themselves, he overheard a few not even knowing what this meeting was about. Well, given that this meeting mostly spread through word-of-mouth, he could forgive a guy for not knowing the reason for the gathering.
As the trickle of players entering the area stopped, a sort of lull suddenly blanketed the surroundings. Before long, the exact guy Tiffany was waiting for finally arrived…
Diavel the Slayer.
"Listen up!" the feminine voice came from his twinkish body, his bright pink, braided hair swishing in an unseen breeze. "I have gathered you al here today to discuss the future of our time here, and how we're going to kick the ass out of the floor bosses on the way up to the top!"
"I dunno if you can top bud," a nasally voice wheezed. "You look like more of a bottom to me."
"Shut the fuck up and pay attention!" Diavel snapped, causing everyone to pay close attention to the femboy's hands, where he held a box of books. "We have been collecting information from the various beta testers so far, collaborating with them to create a free guide that we've been handing out to everyone who we could find. Each of these books is enchanted to be updated whenever the master book is, so it's always up to date with the latest information we can find!"
Indeed, Tiffany had handed out a few of the earlier editions of those books, from before they had figured out that particular enchantment. Though, he really hoped that they actually read those books, given the confused looks he saw on the various members of the crowd.
"Oh, those books?" another nasally voice called out from the crowd. "Yeah, those are just junk items. Nothing but basic shit even a moron can figure out."
Basic– did they even make it past the first few pages? Surely the majority of the playerbase knew how to actually read, right?
"Yeah, I dunno about those books, man," a weaselly voice said. "They kinda… got my friend killed?"
He fucking recognized that voice! And said friend was at fault for trying to 'use his new skills' in a Level 10 area at Level 2!
"Yeah, who the hell even reads books nowadays anyway?" a particularly meatheaded voice spoke out.
"Are you all fucking retarded?" Diavel asked bluntly, his voice echoing in the amphitheatre they were all in. "If you don't actually read the books, grasp what it's telling you, and follow the written instructions, then of course you won't be able to get anything from it, because you never bothered to study it when your lives literally depend on it!"
He sighed, holding up a hand. "I learned from one of these books. I had never played SAO or any game similar prior, as I'm more of a Darksouls Fan. But even I became super fucking popular for kicking ass and being able to take down area guardians without getting hit once. You know why that is?"
"I'unno," the meathead called out. "Maybe by being a pansy backline bitch?"
"No, it's called I learned the fucking timing to the exact second by reading the books, and executed frame-perfect dodges. Not even that fucking hard for a frontline fighter with a brain to get in close, if they follow what people are willing to teach them, dipshit!" Diavel growled. "If you had read the monster bestiary section mid-way through the book, it literally tells you what attacks monsters have, and how to avoid them."
With that, he tossed a book at the guy with the throwing skill, and bonked him on the head with it. "Look at the fucking book, turn to page thirty, and fucking look at it. There are even pretty pictures, so you don't have to read all the 'hard words' dumbass."
Yeesh. Tiffany made a mental note to stock up on Burn Heals. Man, it was mad funny seeing Diavel absolutely roasting the shit out of some dumbasses.
But seriously though, he really hoped that they were just an especially vocal minority.
"Seriously," Kirito called out from a corner seat. "You can't expect beta testers to hold your hands. A beta tester is our best hope of survival, and trying to tie us down just to walk you through the basics will slow us down enough that we could all die before we even get out of the first floor."
A bit out of line, but… yeah, these players did need the kick in the pants to not get themselves and others killed.
"…So what, just because you know a thing or two, you think you're better than us?" the meathead retorted. "I don't think we even need you beta scum anyway!"
"Well if you want to kill yourself that badly, be my guest," Kirito laughed it off. "Like, I don't know what you thought you would achieve by saying that, but I've been playing League since before you were born. Your death would simply amuse me when I play it back in front of others as a highlight reel for the most hilarious failures in SAO. If you don't want to prove me right and end up as a statistic or a meme video for kids to learn what not to do, you might wanna listen to the people who actually care."
"I hate that that guy is right," BallsDeep69 grumbled on the sidelines, "but could you be a little less assholish about it Kirito? You are kinda making it worse, even if it's true."
"Hey, fuck you, man! You think you're hot shit? You wanna go? You wanna fuckin' go?" the meathead yelled back, the crowd parting between him and Kirito– oh shit, he had to step in now!
"Woah woah woah– hey! What are you two doing?" Tiffany intervened, standing in between the two dipshits. "This is not the time to start antagonizing people! We've got a goddamn raid to plan out! You know, the raid to defeat the boss blocking our escape from the goddamn death game we're stuck in?"
He let out a huff. "Seriously, doing shit like this at a time like this? Where lives are on the line?" he said as he slowly stepped back. "And well, yeah, what Kirito said was way out of line, but… it was at least approaching the truth. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And when we're trying to escape as fast as possible, we can't afford to be babysitting all of our weakest links. So we gave you these resources to bring you guys up to speed faster."
"…So what you're saying is…" Meathead began. Progress? "… is that you guys want an excuse to rush ahead and steal all the good loot before we can get to it, right? Yeah, I bet you guys didn't actually put half of the actual good shit in your books! Fuckin' beta cucks—"
"Nevermind that neither I nor Tiffany here are beta testers, and have probably the best gear here thanks to those books, huh," Diavel snarked. "If you aren't going to put in the hard work to be part he raid team, fuck off so we can plan for what actually matters, like escaping certain death. People like you who think this is all still just a game are cringe."
"YOU'RE CRINGE!" the Meathead cried out, before storming out of the area.
"Anyone else going to be a disruptive ass while we're trying to plan shit out?" Diavel asked plainly.
"I—"
"If it's not critical information about the boss raid, shut it," Diavel warned.
Man… he really was surrounded by morons, huh?
~~~~

AN:

TheLetter_A: Aaaaand that's another chapter finished! Man, morons are… a thing to write. I am ambivalent on writing them by virtue of my opinions averaging out to that position. Ah well. At least we can count on Mr. Meathead appearing at some point later… if he hadn't gotten himself killed before then, of course.

Kitsu: I bet we're going to have to have a Meathead POV during the raid where he tries to do some fuck fuck shit, and pays the price in a really funny way. Even if he manages to survive the boss, he'll be humiliated for the rest of the game probably, and if he does he might make for a good antagonist during a certain arc that I have in mind.
