POV: Third Person
Time: 12:30 PM
Location: Brockton Bay

In the park, many people were walking around, and children were playing and laughing — a normal sight, right?

Not for these people.

Some parents were constantly checking their surroundings, never taking their eyes off their children. Others looked around in a threatening way, gripping their pockets — many of which hid weapons.

One might ask, why are people so afraid? But the world they live in is a cruel one.

At any moment, a random villain could start a fight, leaving everyone at their mercy.

Or maybe the alarms would blare, warning that a giant monster was about to destroy their entire city — and even if they somehow survived, they'd be left with nothing.

But in this park, there was one person who stood out among everyone else.

That was Justen Marrows.

He had brown hair, black eyes, and looked to be in his mid-twenties. He wore a white shirt, black pants, and black shoes.

He looked deep in thought, a complicated expression on his face.

Then he sighed, lifted his head, and looked at the sky.

A soft smile appeared on his lips as he closed his eyes.

What an odd occurrence in this sadly doomed world.

Or… is it truly a doomed world?

-x-
POV: Justen

I opened my eyes, stretched on the park bench, then stood up.

I started walking along the pathway so I could get started on my plan.

My name is Justen Marrows, and I just got transported into a grim, dark world — or a death world, if you want to call it that.

Many in my place would freak out or cry, since this world is literally doomed to collapse no matter what the main characters do to fix it.

But I didn't.

How?

Was it because I'm so strong-willed that I just kept moving forward? Or because I'm so suicidal that I didn't care enough to do anything?

No… well, kinda?

I don't really know how the perks work, other than "they just do," so I don't really have an answer for that question.

And the second reason I'm not afraid is because I did a certain CYOA before I went to sleep last night.

And lo and behold, I woke up in front of a park entrance with a sign nearby reading Brockton Bay Park.

At first, I thought I was dreaming and pinched myself to wake up.

Nothing happened — which means this is all real.

So yeah, I do remember most of my choices in the CYOA, at least.

I picked enemies that would target me so I could steal their powers.

Oh yeah, I forgot to talk about my power.

Yes — only one.

And I don't need more than that to survive in this world.

What is my power, you ask?

Architect.

Yeah, the only way for me to die is through my own stupidity.

And I have fifteen charges I can use to get out of a pinch.

I stopped in my tracks as a thought made itself clear.

Maybe I really will die because of my stupidity…

Why am I saying this?

Well, a single charge from Architect is equivalent to a single Shard Point — or 1 SP.

In the universal power upgrades, the first one lets you increase your other power's range, and if I remember correctly, its name is [Mr. Citywide]. It upgrades the range to roughly the size of Brockton Bay and costs 10 SP.

That's if I'm remembering correctly, which I could very well be wrong about.

But should I waste my charges on it?

I pondered that for a few seconds before deciding to take the risk.

At that moment, I focused intently on those fifteen charges.

I only used ten, leaving the other five alone as I thought about the power.

Slowly but surely, the ten charges were gone, and in their place was a single shardless power.

It was turned off by default, so I didn't have to manually deactivate it — useful if I made a power but didn't want to use it right away.

So I turned it on, and oh my lord, what a beautiful surprise it was.

Powers. So many of them. I could sense them across my enhanced range, and I could do anything with them.

So I did.

Well, mostly. Some of them were in the sky, flying, so I decided to leave those alone until they got closer to the ground — then I'd steal them.

I could even sense two powers underground, about a hundred meters below me — I was guessing Coil and Noelle.

Let's leave everyone who's flying and Noelle for now and focus on stealing everybody else's powers.

And they came in floods. I was assaulted by my new senses.

Everyone had this weird aura — I could sense their emotions when I looked at them — and I could feel every insect and crustacean from Brockton Bay's edge to Boston.

I immediately turned all of it off and closed my eyes for a minute or two to gather my thoughts.

After a few minutes, I sighed and said,

"Well… that's step one over with, kinda… what was step two again? Oh yeah — go to New York for Sting's and Legend's powers. Then after that, all of the Triumvirate."

That's if I don't change my plans — which I honestly might, if I come up with a better one.

Chapter Two(edited) New
-x-
POV: Justen
Time: 12:55 PM

After sorting through the powers I had stolen and the few remaining in my range — mostly the flyers and Noelle — I did something most people would call dumb, if not outright stupid.

I turned Noelle's shard power into a shardless one.

But I had my reasons:
  1. I could keep track of her using Architect even if she got outside my range.
  2. I wouldn't derail Leviathan; if I stole it, he'd be disrupted because I already had Blank.
  3. I didn't want to leave Noelle powerless near Coil, who might do something to her.
Once that was taken care of, I spent the next ten minutes or so mixing and matching the powers I had.

—Oh, one of the flyers landed nearby. Let me just take that power of your… brain? You get what I mean.

It was Glory Girl's power. Pretty nice to have. I turned it into a shardless version and modified the aura… and voilà! Better, improved power, with the aura now distracting people from focusing on me.

Now, let's see how flying works…

"Ohhhh yeahhh, this is so cooool!"

I couldn't help but yell — I was genuinely flying!

This was basically a dream come true for any superhero fan.

I flew past the buildings and looked down. My stomach lurched at the height.

"Now, what's up, danger…" I said, swooping down to the streets and back up, swinging around like Spider-Man — though a lot slower.

After a while, I stopped when I felt Purity's power touch the ground through her aura, then stole it too.

Looking at her power, a thought sprang to mind: Can I use two flying powers together?

I spent a few minutes testing, trying to see if fusing them would work better. The results were clear: fusing was better. So I ripped the flying portion of both powers and created a single new one — one I'd probably enhance further in the future.

After checking my new top speed, I was about to steal more powers when they practically came to me in packages.

Near the place where I'd taken most of the E88 members' powers, three more were heading my way.

They belonged to StormTiger and Fenja & Menja. I stole those too.

I wanted to experiment with those powers, but I was already spending too much time. So I focused on the most important task at hand:

Taking all the powers inside Brockton Bay.

This was going to take some time…

POV: Third Person
Location: Protectort Meeting Room
Time: 2:00 PM

The meeting room was packed with Protectort Capes and New Waves members, with the exception of LaserDream.

Every cape in the room wore a solemn expression, fear underlying their faces.

The last two Wards with powers, Aegis, tried to calm the others down — failing miserably. Panacea and Shielder worked to help Glory Girl, who looked like a puppet with its strings cut.

Finally, LaserDream entered, utterly exhausted and disheveled.

Piggot gestured toward the empty seat beside LadyPhoton.

After LaserDream sat down and was given water, Piggot spoke in a loud voice:

"Is everyone here?"

Nobody responded. Piggot huffed, then continued:

"Start the video call with Director Dragon."

"Understood," Dragon said. The screen lit up with Director Rebecca Costa-Brown's face, a complicated expression on her face.

"Dire–" Piggot began, but Director Costa-Brown interrupted:

"No need for formalities. We have important matters to discuss."

Piggot nodded and began:

"At 12:30 PM, most of the Wards were patrolling. Dauntless, patrolling nearby, reported that their powers stopped working."

"Later, at 1 PM, Glory Girl — called by Gallant — came to help. But once she got near the ground, her powers also stopped working."

Director Costa-Brown gestured for Piggot to continue, intrigued.

"We weren't sure what caused this until half an hour ago," Piggot said, turning toward LaserDream. All eyes followed.

LaserDream looked around at the capes staring at her. A hand touched her shoulder, making her flinch — it was her mother, LadyPhoton, who gave her a reassuring smile. Calmed, LaserDream began speaking:

"I just finished a call from my mom, telling me to go to the rig. On my way there, flying… I felt my powers leave me and started falling. Suddenly, someone caught me and started talking, but I couldn't focus on him — everything else seemed more important. Halfway through, he undid the Stranger effect. I could finally focus."

She paused, recalling details.

"He told me the Stranger effect was my younger cousin's aura, tweaked so people wouldn't focus on him. He's stolen all the Empire Capes' powers and is on his way to steal the AAB Capes' powers too. He also mentioned dealing with the small Merchant group and the Undersiders' thief team. After that, he plans to take the powers of the FaultLine mercenary group and Uber & Leet."

LaserDream paused for breath, sipping water from a cup her mother handed her.

"…He also said he'd come here, but first, he needs to finish collecting the powers in the city."

Many in the room began yelling.

"Silence!" Director Costa-Brown commanded. The room went quiet.

She looked at LaserDream. "When is he coming?"

LaserDream bit her cheek. "He didn't say."

Director Costa-Brown, slightly annoyed, said:

"Make preparations to greet him, sway him to join the Protectort by any means, and set up a meeting between him and me as soon as possible, Director Piggot."

Piggot nodded, about to speak, but the door opened.

In walked a man wearing a white shirt and black pants. Brown hair, black eyes, smiling at them.

"No need to sway me. I'm already on your side."

Most capes jolted as they felt their powers being stolen. A wave of calm washed over the room, soothing everyone instantly.

He looked around, mumbling, "This aura is so darn useful…"

He walked to an empty seat and sat down.

"Now… shall we start talking about saving the world?" He smiled foolishly.

Chapter Three(edited) New
-x-
POV: Justen
Time: 2:10 PM

As I observed everyone in the room — all of them calm but alert as they looked at me — I couldn't help but praise Glory Girl's aura in my head for how useful it was.

I cleared my throat and started speaking.

"Now, I know I haven't made the best first impression on you guys and gals, but I feel safer this way — knowing that even if someone suddenly opened a portal behind me and shot me in the head, I'd still be fine."

I said this while looking straight at Alexandria — or rather, Director Rebecca Costa-Brown — who had a shocked expression on her face.

"We wou—!" Rebecca started, but I raised my hand to gesture for silence before anyone else could react.

I cleared my throat again before she could continue and said,

"I know you wouldn't send your boogeyman after me, but this is just so I can feel safe."

She calmed down slightly but kept glancing around the room.

"Maybe this isn't the best place to talk about saving the world," I continued. "Could you call DoorMaker to open a portal to a more secure location so we can discuss this properly?"

I looked at her expectantly. She hesitated, clearly conflicted — probably because she couldn't use her Thinker power on me — but finally nodded.

A portal opened nearby, and I could immediately sense all the powers waiting on the other side.

"You're really not holding back, huh?" I said with a slightly worried tone as I stood and began walking toward it.

Before stepping through, I turned back to the room.

"I'll give you your powers back — better and improved — but for now, I need to use them for something that threatens the entire universe."

"Oh, and I've taken every single villain's power in this city. You can start arresting them now."

With that, I stepped through the portal, which closed behind me.

What greeted me was the face of Doctor Mother and all the Cauldron capes — except Alexandria — staring at me with worried expressions. They quickly relaxed as soon as my aura began affecting them.

Doctor Mother let out a slow sigh and said,

"Can you please turn the aura off? I'd like to talk without any further power interference."

I complied and shut the aura off, which immediately made them all tense again.

Another portal opened, and Rebecca stepped through — this time in her hero costume, Alexandria. She looked around briefly before moving beside Legend and Eidolon.

Eidolon stared at me like I was a piece of steak — probably thanks to my drawbacks, [You Are A Worthy Opponent] and [Chosen One].

I nodded slightly and started speaking.

"First off, I want to say I'm on your side. But you guys have done so many messed-up things I don't even want to think about."

I looked at each of their faces, reading the guilt levels through Gallant's power. Legend felt the most guilt, while Contessa felt the least.

"So," I continued, "I'll help you undo your wrongs with my power."

Their emotions shifted rapidly from person to person. Doctor Mother nodded.

"Yes, your power-stealing and modification abilities will be a major help to us," she said.

I chuckled lightly, which earned me a few weird looks. I raised my hands slightly and said,

"I'm not just a power stealer and modifier — I can make powers."

That shocked everyone in the room. The Number Man was the first to recover and asked,

"There must be a caveat to creating powers, correct?"

I nodded and began explaining how my ability worked.

After I finished, he started typing on his computer.

"We should record the time and number of charges you receive," he said. "If what you've described is accurate, then by midnight, you could create Eidolon's power. You already have five charges, and you gain fifteen each cycle."

I nodded and replied,

"Correct. But I plan to use my next charges to halve the time needed for the charge cycle, so I can gain them faster."

He nodded again and continued typing.

Turning back to Doctor Mother, I said,

"I'm also going to turn all your capes' powers into shardless ones, if that's okay."

She understood, since I'd already explained what shardless powers were, and nodded her approval.

I looked around at the other capes, focusing on Eidolon. He was trying not to meet my eyes — and failing miserably. Others in the room noticed and exchanged uneasy glances.

Might as well deal with this now.

"Eidolon," I said, locking eyes with him.

He finally looked up.

"You want to fight me, don't you? Because you think killing me will restore your power?"

He hesitated, then looked down.

"Yes… but I don't know why I'm thinking that, or why I even believe it," he said, gripping his mask tightly.

Honestly, I expected him to have attacked me already. Probably thanks to my perks [Countdown] and [Golden Perks] — they weaken my drawbacks.

I nodded and said calmly,

"Don't worry. I'll fix you in a moment — and then we'll deal with those pesky Endbringers."

Eidolon tensed. "How are you going to deal with the Endbringers? Am I… Simurgh-bombed?"

He sounded genuinely afraid, thinking he was being Mastered.

I reactivated the calming aura and explained,

"No, you're not being Mastered by that ugly pigeon in the sky. Your dead shard is just connected to the Endbringers. It's not your fault — it's your shard's."

"But—"

"No buts. Let me fix your shit," I said with finality.

He finally nodded and let me do my thing.

Chapter Four(edited) New

POV: Justen
Location: Cauldron Meeting Room
Time: 4:30 PM

It took half an hour, but I finally came up with a solution for Eidolon — or David's — problem.

I simply applied Glory Girl's aura effect, the calming influence, to him.

He was able to hold a somewhat coherent conversation with me, especially after I made his power shardless. According to him, this allowed him to ignore the intrusive thoughts compelling him to fight me.

Once that was done, we moved on to planning our next steps.

NumbersMan was the first to speak.

"You said your range could be enhanced using DoorMaker, correct? I think we should open portals to every location with people affected like Eidolon."

I nodded in agreement and offered my own opinion.

"I believe starting with Birdcage is the best course of action, because we would be handling two problems at once: Glaistig Uaine and one of Teacher's thralls, Saint."

Most of the group nodded, but Contessa seemed hesitant. She opened her eyes and said,

"It is possible. If we start preparing now, we could neutralize all of the threats you mentioned — except the Machine Army and Nilbog, which will have to be dealt with later."

Since I made her power shardless, she's become slightly more… human.

And did I let her Path Toward Victory influence me through [Blank]? No. I just gave a little leeway, allowing her to path me for a week at most, and I can override it anytime I want. That way, I don't have to worry about anything.

-x-
POV: Dragon
Location: Birdcage
Time: 4:50 PM

It happened so fast.

She didn't even realize what had happened until five minutes after the chaos erupted.

Every inmate in Birdcage had lost their powers.

The worst part? She knew exactly who was responsible.

But she had orders: stop the chaos and do not disclose anything to anyone — for now.

She had no idea what Director Rebecca Costa-Brown was thinking. The person who had stolen all the prisoners' powers could use them for countless malicious purposes.

Her worry eased slightly when she received a call from ArmsMaster. All members of his team and New Wave had their powers restored — and improved.

ClockBlocker could now control how long he froze something. Kid Win regained power and also found out his tinkering specialty with Modular Devices.

Glory Girl, however, didn't get her aura back — it was still being used for some unknown purpose — though the rest of her powers were functional.

Still, Dragon remained concerned about what might happen next.

She looked at one of the cells containing the most powerful inmate in the prison. The burnt corpse inside suggested it was Fairy Queen's cell. Dragon examined it briefly, then turned her attention back to the other inmates.

Shortly after, she received another call: villains across the world were losing their powers.

She didn't know whether to feel relieved or worried. On the bright side, Saint and the Dragonslayers had also lost their powers, so she didn't have to worry about them anymore.

POV: Justen
Location: Cauldron
Time: 5:30 PM

A portal opened before me near the final Fallen branch that worshiped the Simurgh. I stepped through, took all the powers, and closed it behind me.

It was a bit anti-climactic, but extremely efficient. I had acquired most of Earth Bet's villain powers — nothing to scoff at, even just from the Birdcage inmates.

Having Butcher's power reassured me that death was no longer a threat… at least for now. Only Scion might still be capable of killing me, which brought my doubts back briefly.

Next, a portal opened near the Slaughterhouse Nine location. I immediately felt the powers within my range and took them all.

This time, though, I had to be careful. Jack Slash — or Jacob — had to be confirmed dead first, to prevent accidentally setting off Scion.

I nodded, and another portal opened as the first one closed.

On the other side, Jack looked around erratically. His eyes met mine — and before he could react, a combination of blaster powers I had stolen obliterated him and everything within a few meters.

The portal remained open as the Triumvirate and I stepped through.

Eidolon used telekinesis to hold Mannequin in the air, while Legend stayed near me as I used Heartbreaker to calm the remaining members. Alexandria went straight toward William Manton.

I deployed one of my master powers to knock out the rest before turning my attention to Mannequin, still suspended by Eidolon's telekinesis.

I spent a moment mixing and modifying some of the powers I had gathered. After a while, I had exactly what I was looking for. I transferred it to Mannequin.

His body stopped moving, and a projection of his former human form appeared before me and Eidolon.

He opened his eyes and looked around. As with the others, I used a master power to knock him out. Eidolon released the telekinetic hold on Mannequin's body.

"Did you give him projection power that you can control?" Eidolon asked.

It was more than that, but I simply nodded while using telekinesis to lift both Mannequin's body and the projected form.

As Legend grouped the other members together, Eidolon and I noticed Alexandria flying toward us, hands covered in blood.

Nobody spoke. I considered using several of my master powers to calm everyone, but decided it would be too invasive — except for Eidolon, who needed it to avoid a lethal conflict between us.

We collected the remaining members and hopped through the portal, leaving behind the silent ruins where Slaughterhouse Nine once stood.

Chapter Five(edited) New
-x-
POV: Justen
Location: Cauldron Base
Time: 1:00 AM

It had already been an hour since my charge cycle reset, and I had used all of my charges to cut the time needed to generate new ones in half.

I was sitting around, fiddling with a phone Keith had given me, with Kurt on my left and David on my right.

I was making a PHO account and wanted to add a cape tag, but a mod told me I needed to send a video to verify that I was actually a cape.

I thought about it for a second, then a thought occurred to me.

I turned to David.

"Hey, can I take a picture of us together?"

He gave me a suspicious look but shrugged and nodded.

After he finished putting on his mask and hood, I snapped a picture of us and sent it to the mod.

"Thanks," I said.

"No problem," he replied.

We fell back into a comfortable silence.

After a while of trolling PHO, a portal appeared and Keith walked through it, greeting us.

David and I returned the greeting, and Kurt nodded before returning to work on his computer.

Soon, Rebecca entered, followed by Doctor Mother and finally Contessa. They didn't speak as they sat down.

Both Rebecca and Doctor Mother looked at Contessa as if signaling her to begin. She nodded and started explaining.

"We've made significant progress toward our secondary goal: dealing with both A- and S-class threats on Earth Bet and even those on other known Earths."

A hologram of each A- and S-class threat appeared before us. Most were grayed out and labeled neutralized.

Contessa glanced at each of us before continuing.

"There are only a few left, but neutralizing them is a priority. With each one down, we grow stronger."

The we being me, but I wasn't going to say that out loud.

"After careful thought and consideration, we've devised a method to deal with the most difficult of these threats."

The Machine Army and Nilbog appeared, followed by the Endbringers.

David flinched but calmed after a moment. Contessa then looked at me.

"I have a plan to neutralize the Machine Army and Nilbog by tomorrow afternoon."

David spoke up from beside me.

"What about the Endbringers?"

His tone was heated.

Contessa answered in her usual monotone.

"They should hopefully be neutralized within two days."

Keith spoke calmly.

"What about the Deviants? When will we handle them?"

Ah, that one. I wasn't sure what would happen. I had already taken the powers from one of the Deviants, so I opted to turn their shard-based powers into shardless powers. I was still experimenting.

So "we" — Contessa, Kurt, and Doctor Mother — had just been kidnapping all the Deviants that were out and about, keeping them in Cauldron cells.

Not the nicest surprise for them, especially since the Triumvirate and I had just returned from dealing with most of the A- and S-class threats.

Contessa, maintaining her practiced calm, answered Keith.

"We'll deal with the Deviants soon after we finish the A- and S-class threats."

Keith didn't look pleased, but he didn't argue.

Contessa paused, looking at everyone before continuing.

"And that brings us to our main goal."

A hologram of Scion appeared.

"The Entity will be carefully neutralized within the next week, without further delay."

The hologram vanished after a minute. Silence fell until Keith finally muttered,

"This feels like a dream…"

Everyone shared that sentiment.

"It really does feel like a dream," David added with a smile.

I chuckled, drawing everyone's attention.

"Tell me about it. I'm half-expecting to wake up in my bed and realize none of this ever happened."

I glanced at Keith.

"I'm literally afraid of clowns, and here I am, unbothered about killing a literal scientific magic space whale. This shit is crazy."

He smiled.

"Well, I don't blame you. Even my kid is afraid of clowns."

He chuckled, which confused me until I noticed David trying not to laugh.

"Huh? What's so funny?" I asked, confused.

Keith chuckled, and David was barely holding it in. I looked around the room — everyone else was clearly amused.

"No, seriously. What's so funny?"

Kurt answered with an amused look.

"Keith is calling you 'kid' because his kid is also afraid of clowns."

I felt like an idiot. I turned to Keith, ready to retort.

"You gay ass bitc—"

Location: Cauldron Base (Meeting Room)
Time: 6:00 AM

I was sitting in the meeting room, my legs resting on the table.

I was alone, mostly because the other Cauldron capes needed sleep. The ones who didn't were still trying to cool off and process everything that had happened.

Meanwhile, I had no such problems — thanks to my powers and a few perks that helped me deal with stress and fatigue.

So basically, I was just doomscrolling through PHO and other media outlets while using my powers to troll people for laughs.

Somewhere along the way, I even made a friend — PHO's favorite troll: XxVoidCowBoyxX, or as anyone who's read Worm knows him, Greg Veder.

As I typed my next message, a thought crossed my mind.

"This is gonna be fun," I said with a chuckle.

♦️ Topic: Power-Stealing Parahuman Drains Every Villain in Brockton Bay

In: Boards ► Places ► America ► Brockton Bay Discussion

BrocktonBayer45 (Original Poster) (Cape Fanboy)
Posted on April 7, 2011:

About an hour ago, police and PRT vehicles stormed every gang in the city and arrested them.

At first, I thought it was going to turn into an all-out war — considering the villains we've got here — but the crazy thing is, the villains were the easiest to arrest. Their goons were actually harder to deal with.

From what I could tell, the villains couldn't use their powers at all.

I messaged a trusted source to ask what was going on.

They told me that a power-stealing parahuman had taken every power in the city.

Yes, every power — including the Protectorate capes and independent heroes like Parian.

The good news is, the thief gave the Protectorate their powers back and even joined them. But it's unclear if they returned powers to the independent capes yet.

That's all the info I have for now, but I did get some video footage of the arrests:

LINK: Lung and Oni Lee getting arrested — Lung gets tazed and dragged away, Oni Lee surrounded and hit with multiple tazers. The footage blurs just before Bakuda starts screaming like a lunatic and gets knocked out by a baton strike.

LINK: E88 takedown — Hookwolf and Cricket are handled by Assault and Battery, while Armsmaster easily captures Krieg, Vector, Othala, and the rest.

LINKS:
• Merchant arrests at Archer's Bridge
• Undersiders and Circus
• Unknown villain "Coil" being detained
• Faultline's Crew being raided (unclear if they'll face charges)

What do you guys think about all this?

That's everything I know for now — I'll post updates when I learn more.

POV: Justen
Location: Near Ellisburg
Time: 12:00 PM

I was standing next to David, who was wearing his Eidolon costume, as we looked out at the containment site Q4 — Ellisburg.

As I stood there, I felt fifteen charges settle within me, stored away in the back of my mind in case I needed them later. I continued observing the sorry state of Ellisburg.

A mix of emotions hit me all at once: sadness, anger, pity — and horror at what I was seeing.

Then a thought crossed my mind, and before I could stop myself, I said it out loud.

"It smells like shit in here."

From beside me, David chuckled. He turned to look at me and said,

"You haven't seen — or in this case, smelled — the worst of it."

I turned toward him, my face twisted in disbelief.

"It gets worse?" I asked.

He pointed toward the center of Ellisburg.

"That's as far as I got last time," he said. "And the smell there was even worse than what we're dealing with now."

I pinched my nose.

"I'm sorry, little guy," I muttered, "but we have to do this."

David chuckled again, but his tone turned serious as he stepped forward.

"You ready?" he asked.

I nodded, and he gave a small nod back before turning to face Ellisburg. I moved to stand beside him.

"Well," he said, "let's not waste any more time."

As he spoke, I activated one of the strongest powers I'd gained just yesterday — Sleeper's Storm.

It felt… strange. But I pushed the sensation aside and advanced toward Ellisburg, my storm-breaker form swirling around me. David flew inside the storm, keeping pace.

As we entered Ellisburg, the "residents" began to appear — twisted, corrupted, and desperate. They tried to stop us, but their efforts failed.

Using a few of my Master-class powers, I subdued them, then began applying a range of biological abilities to repair their bodies and undo what had been done to them.

Eidolon supported me by using postcognition in his first power slot, a memory-transfer ability in his second, and aerokinesis in his third — both to fly and to keep airborne pathogens away from us.

Each time someone was restored, a Doormaker portal opened beneath them, teleporting them to the hospitals Rebecca had set up. Kurt was operating Doormaker, opening portals the instant a person was stabilized.

The process was slow, but it worked.

As we pushed further inward, I felt Nilbog's power — and immediately stole it. I knocked him out with one of my Master powers, and a portal opened beneath him, sending him straight to a Cauldron prison cell to await trial.

With Nilbog's power taken, the healing process became much faster. Within half an hour, it was done — everyone in Ellisburg had been saved or contained.

Which was good, because next on the list was the Machine Army — and if time allowed, we'd also help with the Deviants.

POV: Justen
Location: Near Eagleton
Time: 2:00 PM

The town of Eagleton looked like something straight out of a sci-fi horror movie.

This time, I was alone. The others were busy saving lives — I was here to handle the destruction.

To make things easier, I'd borrowed a power from someone.

The Sting.

Yeah, that one — borrowed from Flechette for the day. I'd return it later.

But for now? It was time to deal with some clankers.

I transformed into my Sleeper-breaker form and moved toward Eagleton.

As I approached, the cannon drones locked onto me and opened fire. Their rounds disintegrated midair before they could even touch me.

Inside the town, I felt — through my enhanced senses — that the slave-mechas were closing in. Using a custom teleportation ability I'd built from multiple powers, I teleported every trapped human inside those machines directly to the hospitals waiting to treat them.

After several minutes, I could sense that there were no more people left inside the Machine Army. I let out a sigh of relief — though it felt strange doing that while still in my Sleeper form.

Next, I pulled another ability into the mix — Ash Beast's power — merging it with Sleeper's.

From that moment on, the Machine Army didn't stand a chance.

A few minutes later, Eagleton was gone — completely annihilated. Nothing remained.

Even though the battle was over, there was still work to do.

I reverted to my human form and teleported back to Cauldron Base — just in time to see David using telekinesis to lift what looked like a tinker-tech nuke.

I flew over to help, adding my own telekinesis to stabilize it. David gave me a nod, and I returned it.

Doctor Mother's voice came through the earpiece:

"Doormaker portal opening in one… two… three!"

As soon as the portal appeared, David and I hurled the nuke through it. It vanished, and the portal snapped shut.

David adjusted his earpiece and asked, his tone tense,

"Did it work?"

Doctor Mother's voice replied, calm but relieved.

"Thankfully, yes. It destroyed the planet the Machine Army was using for resources."

Both of us exhaled in relief.

I dropped to the floor, groaning.

"Thank God that worked. I don't ever want to build another nuke like that again."

David chuckled and sank down beside me.

"You and me both," he said.

I turned my head to look at him.

"How do you think Keith and Rebecca are doing right now?" I asked.

I already knew why I was asking — both of them were currently handling the press about me.

"They're probably fine," David said with a shrug. "Fortuna's helping them, after all."

I nodded, staring up at the ceiling for a moment before glancing back at him.

"Wanna play some video games?" I asked.

He looked at me, blinked, then shrugged again.

"Sure. What are we playing?"

I smirked.

"Ever heard of Doom?"

Chapter Eight New

Pov: Justen
Location: Cauldron Cells
Time: 7:00 PM

I was standing in front of hundreds of cells that currently held the Deviants — or as people knew them, Case 53s.

Some of them looked somewhat normal, like Weld, but still odd. Compared to the most extreme cases, though, they looked almost normal.

It was… horrible, what these people had to go through, just because some of them wanted to be heroes.

I felt a hand on my shoulder that made me turn around to see who had put it there.

As I turned, I saw Fortuna looking at me with a calm expression on her face.

She was wearing her signature suit and fedora, standing perfectly still — almost like a machine.

I frowned at her and said, "I still don't understand you. Why wear the fedora all the time?" I rolled my eyes. "Honestly, it looks like you're trying way too hard to look cool and shit."

She looked amused and said, "You have no right to say that, Mister Generic-Looking Guy." She shook her head, continuing in a sarcastic tone. "Have you even looked in a mirror once in your life? At least I try — unlike you."

I wanted to rebuke that… but she was right. I had given up pretty fast when I tried to make my own costume, and I just stuck to my normal clothes as my "costume."

Fortuna shook her head before her calm expression returned. "Are you ready? They're waiting."

I didn't say anything at first. I turned around and looked at the rest of the Case 53s in their cells.

After a few seconds, I turned back to Fortuna and said, "I'm ready."

She nodded and started walking toward one of the cells.

I followed and looked inside. There was a pile of molten rock stuck together that vaguely resembled a human body.

She turned her head toward me and began explaining. "This is Michael Lincolns. He was on death row before he bought a vial from us that turned him into a molten rock man." She looked back at him coldly. "He was on death row for multiple acts of rape and murder."

The frown on my face deepened as I looked at him with disgust, remembering what David had said to me a while ago.

Pov: Justen
Location: Cauldron (Tinker Workshop)
Time: 1:30 PM (Flashback)

I was using many different types of powers as I worked on making the Tinker-tech nuke.

I wasn't alone — David was using two of his slots for Tinker powers, constantly changing their specializations, and his third slot had telekinesis to help him build while I generated materials for him to use.

We were quiet as we worked, focusing solely on finishing the nuke before I had to confront the Machine Army.

After a while, we finally got everything done.

I let out a loud sigh as I finished my work and made a couch for me to relax on before going to destroy the Machine Army.

David floated next to me using his telekinesis, sat on the couch beside me, and let out a sigh of his own.

He looked tired — probably because he hadn't slept well last night, worried something might go wrong.

Or at least, that's what I think, after I looked at him using Tattletale's power — which I'd forgotten to turn off after finishing the nuke.

I made two cups of hot tea and gave him one as I drank from mine.

He took it and said, "Thanks." He drank and stared at the nuke we made.

He looked at it for a few seconds, then glanced around the rest of the workshop.

I followed his gaze. The place was surprisingly well-maintained and organized, so I asked, "Hey, never knew you guys had a Tinker workshop."

David didn't respond for a while before finally answering. "…It was Hero's workshop."

That shut me up fast.

David looked at the ground for a second. "Once we deal with the Machine Army and you start working on fixing the Deviants, I want you to know something about them."

He looked up at me. "Some of them were people who wanted to be heroes, and others wanted to use their powers to become rogues." He closed his eyes briefly. "And some of them… they wanted to be villains. Heck, some were on death row."

He looked at his hands for a moment before turning toward me. "I never could forgive myself for the many things we did… but I only hope we can fix what we can now."

I looked at him for a moment before smirking. "Hey man, don't worry — we've got a lot of time to fix everything. And now that you have me here, nothing's impossible."

He stared at me for a second, then smiled.

He looked up and laughed as tears ran down his face. "Hero would be so proud," he said, wiping them away.

I placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled softly. "I'm sure he is proud."

(End of Flashback)

She didn't say anything for a moment, just turned her head toward me.

I sighed. "I know… you can help me if I let you path me through [Blank]." I scratched my head.

She said nothing at first, then shook her head, confusing me.

"You take it and fix everyone here."

That stopped me cold.

"I know you don't trust us enough to let me path you entirely, so you can take my power and help everyone here."

I stood there stunned, then looked back at the cells.

Finally, I turned back to Fortuna. She was watching me with a serious expression.

I smiled. "No."

She looked confused, but before she could speak, I started messing with the powers I'd stored.

I struck a pose as energy began manifesting behind me.

"BEAR WITNESS! MY STANDO POWAA!"

And behind me stood the main stand of Part Four, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

"KUREIJI DAIYAMONDO!"

Fortuna looked completely baffled.

Totally worth it. I'd only used ten charges, combining several time-based powers and a few projection-mastery ones.

I pointed at the molten rock guy's cell, and Crazy Diamond rushed toward him.

Fortuna finally regained her composure. "What are you doi—!"

I pointed a finger at her, stopping her mid-sentence, and smirked. "Don't worry about it, big dawg. I don't need whatever powers these guys got — I can always just wait a few days, and I'll do whatever they can, but better!"

She stared at me, mouth open, then shook her head. "You're so unbelievable…"

I posed dramatically. "Oh, and before I forget—" I pointed at her. "DORA!"

She looked half amused, half completely confused — until she realized what I did.

"You…"

Her mouth hung open as I grinned. "Yup," I said. "And just so you know — it's not that I didn't trust you to path me completely. I just don't like precognition powers at all."

And yeah, I let her path me. I was being a whiny little shit because I thought precognition was an annoying power.

I looked back at Crazy Diamond as he reached the molten rock guy.

He started hitting him, yelling his signature stand cry:

"ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA!!!"

After a minute of that, what was left of the molten rock guy was just… a guy.

An ugly one, too.

He slowly woke up and said, "Huh…? Where am I?"

I smiled. "Welcome to hell, Michael."

He glared at me. "Who the hell do you think you're talking to—"

Before he could finish, Crazy Diamond bitch-slapped him across the face.

"Who am I?" I smirked. "Your worst nightmare! Hahaha!"

Beside me, Fortuna looked amused. "You're such a weird guy…"

"Ouch," I said, pretending to be hurt.

Understandable, my English is almost entirely self taught which has made writing harder for me.

Thank you for your suggestion, I'll be looking into seeing what I can do to improve my writing.
