Well-Adjusted Barely Traumatized Demon Slayer (Murata SI-ish)

Interlude 5: Upper Moon Meeting.
Muzan was furious.

He was mad, angry, wrathful, vengeful, upset, tilted, and every expression that described some form of rage.

Beneath all of it, however, was the growing and inescapable feeling of fear.

The first time Muzan suffered from true fear was when he killed his doctor. Once the impulsive urge was satisfied and he realized his mistake, panic overtook him. He killed his only potential hope for survival.

Luckily, the medicine turned him into a demon, but the ramifications of his mistake already bloomed.

That doctor was the only clue towards finding the Blue Spider Lily; a mythical item that he's cursed for centuries.

The second time Muzan felt true fear was centuries later when he met Yoriichi.

The very name was detestable. His power was unmatched. Yoriichi's presence didn't just mimic the sun; it embodied it, burning him as painfully as the actual sun.

Even now, the cells in his body carried a primal dread because of that man.

It was a painful night for Kokushibo once Muzan regained the clarity to realize how eerily similar Yoriichi looked like his strongest demon.

Yoriichi's very existence appeared like a punishment from the gods. No human could ever match up to him. When Kokushibo informed him of Yoriichi's death, Muzan celebrated by killing a hundred people that night.

The third time Muzan felt a gripping fear was when he noticed the death of Enmu. The death of a Lower Moon didn't surprise him, unfortunately. They were weak, lacking the necessary strength to stand against the current era of swordsmen.

What brought his attention was the sudden and inexplicable information he received. Enmu saw things he couldn't handle, and it transferred to Muzan upon the Lower Moon's defeat.

The knowledge that he saw could not be understood. Beyond the nonsense and insanity, the only thing Muzan gleamed was emptiness.

It further reinforced his terror regarding death.

To be dead meant to suffer in that pit of oblivion.

He would not die!

Yet, seeing the demon slayers live stirred something uncomfortable in him. From Akaza's view, he caught a glimpse of the man who tormented Enmu and the mark on the boy who wore Yoriichi's earrings.

Something burned in Muzan that wasn't just fear or anger. It twisted and it gnawed on his impatience.

Were the demon slayers becoming a threat to him?

Could they actually wield the strength to defeat him?

His first instinct was to hide. Paranoia dictated that he should stay hidden in Nakime's castle. Wait for them to age and die, then he could continue researching a cure for the sun.

Paradoxically, a different, contradictory paranoia nagged on him.

If the demon slayers lived, they could pass on their skills to successors. Soon, they would eradicate more and more of his demons. Muzan truly didn't care for his creations, but he needed bodies to help search for the Blue Spider Lily and deal with the demon slayers.

If the demon slayers constantly hunted for him without distraction, then he would never have a moment's peace.

It was also a matter of pride. Nothing could defeat him. He was the ultimate being. Once he achieved immunity against the sun, he would be perfect.

His sense of arrogance was under attack.

Was he actually feeling scared of humans?

That was impossible. Muzan laughed to himself. The deep, maddening sound traveled throughout the Infinity Castle, instantly alerting the Upper Moons of his location.

Nakime plucked her biwa, and the castle condensed, pulling the Upper Moon demons closer.

"I realized something important," Muzan said.

He stood on a platform, gazing at the demons in front of him. They kneeled and the situation reminded him of when he killed off his Lower Moons.

He wasn't going to kill anyone, however. A strong urge compelled him to do so, but they were his strongest assets.

"Despite everything, the demon slayers still exist. The Ubuyashiki family still fights. Forget about the Blue Spider Lily. How come after centuries, none of you are closer to eradicating them?"

Muzan sighed as they said nothing. He forcibly induced small visions of Akaza's fight to the rest of the Upper Moons.

"They live, getting stronger," he said, then looked specifically at Kokushibo. "They awakened marks, becoming powerful enough to the point of worrying Upper Moon Three."

He saw the slight pause in Kokushibo's stoic expression.

Muzan turned, his face staring at Akaza pitifully. "Is your strength inferior to that of mere humans, Akaza?"

Akaza kept his head down, clutching the ground with trembling hands. His forehead looked ready to burst.

Next, Muzan stared at Upper Moon Four. "Has your new form dulled your senses as a ninja? I saw your performance, and I found it lacking."

Tetsuji stayed silent, but the insult caused him to narrow his eyes.

The castle remained still for a moment. To the Upper Moons, it lasted an eternity. Hantengu, Gyutaro, Daki, and Masako did not look up or make any movements.

Even Douma had a frown; his stance remained cautious, and carried none of the fake cheer he normally showed.

The brambles on Muzan's back poured out of him, destroying his shirt and devastating the architecture of the castle's rooms. Debris flung everywhere, and some of the brambles lashed out uncontrollably, gouging the Upper Moons and causing blood to flow like an unending current.

"Why do you even exist?" He asked to no one in particular.

"I thought I made my intentions clear when Gyokko died. I would say that I failed, but that is wrong. Rather, all of you have failed me, which is unacceptable."

He looked at his Upper Moons again before having Nakime summon Yushiro. He hit the ground with a thud, twitching. His eyes were dim and he made no sound despite his moving mouth. His silent prayers went unanswered.

"I have garnered all my use from Tamayo's pet," Muzan said. In truth, he wanted to understand how Tamayo was able to turn someone into a demon without his knowing. He did not get very far, but thinking about the failure only worsened his mood.

"Take turns breaking him. I do not care how it is done. Make him spill any secrets left hiding and break his psyche."

Maybe if they could do that simple task, then he could see through Yushiro and discern Tamayo's location. Muzan already did his fair share, and he was frankly disgusted to continue the routine. Imposing his will on others became boring when they constantly say the same things over and over again.

He was tired of hearing Yushiro scream out Tamayo's name like a monk with his mantra.

It felt like wrestling a boulder. It wouldn't budge and it was a waste of time.

"However, I also want more effort in finding the demon slayers. Share information, work together if you have to," Muzan spat, his desperation overcoming his paranoia.

It hurt to say since he generally avoided having demons work together. But, times change, and needs must be met.

Nakime plucked her biwa again, dismissing all the demons except for Akaza, Masako, and Kokushibo.

Kokushibo swiftly disappeared into a different section of the Infinity Castle, taking Yushiro with him.

Akaza and Masako remained kneeled, waiting for Muzan's reprimand. After all, they did not kill any demon slayers at the Mugen Train. Worse yet, Muzan's mention of the mark implied something dangerous about the demon slayers, something that they could've avoided.

Akaza, if he fought more serious from the start, and Masako, if she worked with Akaza more efficiently.

"I think it is redundant for me to punish you more than you have already punished yourselves, but doing nothing doesn't sit well with me," Muzan said, reaching out to their minds.

Good. At least their loyalty and sense of duty made them realize the severity of their mistakes.

Muzan's brambles tied Masako tightly, and he slammed a hand through her face, pumping blood.

"This may seem like a reward, but rest assured, I am making this as painful as I want it to be," he said. Masako flailed and screamed, her piercing cries and sobs irritating Muzan.

She collapsed on the ground, whimpering and curling up in a ball.

He turned his attention towards Akaza, causing Upper Moon Three to stiffen.

Muzan smiled as he relayed his command. "Akaza, I am revoking your concession. Kill anyone who stands in your way, even if she's a woman. If you cannot do so, then I will see it as disobedience. In other words, I will kill you if you fail again."

Akaza leaked blood from his face and body, the pressure from Muzan bearing down on him like an unstoppable force. He could only nob numbly as his knees buckled, causing him to fall to the ground.

"Nakime, take them away."

With a twang from her instrument, Akaza and Masako were gone.

Muzan moved to a different room, sitting on a chair and thinking to himself. In the background, he could hear Kokushibo unleashing his breathing techniques.

Wait,when did Enmu die again?

I haven't watched Kimetsu this far in, but I assume Muzan proactively going after the slayer corps is a big plot derail? Sounds like tough times are ahead for the slayers.

A quick google search would indicate Train Arc and Infinity Castle Arc are roughly 6-7 months apart. There isn't all that much time to still derail things I'd assume.

There are also…I don't even know, twice the number of hashira leveled slayers now vs canon?

It certainly helps that in the background of all this as canon breaks down, Murata's boss is a clairvoyant. So things might get messier, but that would be from Murata's POV, not necessarily from Kagaya's.

Wait,when did Enmu die again?

He looked into the abyss that was an isekai's soul and lost the will to live after discovering the existence of the F!Muzan tag on AO3.

Even if the blood demon art utilized illusions, maybe Murata could find something inconsistent or strange.
Found the story recently, havent caught up yet but its nice!

So this reminded me of a question: What was the deal with the other demon Womans Blood Demon Art not working on Murata? (The fight where Masashita lost his arm)

There are also…I don't even know, twice the number of hashira leveled slayers now vs canon?
You would think that this should make all the difference in the world, but not really. Muzan was poisoned with some sort of super poison by Tamayo, blown up sky high with Ubuyashiki estate, was attacked by a breathing form created specifically to kill him and they still needed to wait for the sun to finish him off. A lot of things need to happen in a very specific sequence to replicate that.

Chapter 31: Blast to the Past. New
It was a clear, sunny day at the Ubuyashiki estate.

Kyojuro finished his story and the awakening of the demon slayer mark with a drive fitting of the Flame Hashira.

"When we were brought to the brink, we ignited our passion and pushed past our limits!"

The hashira stared at him. Someone coughed in the silence.

While Kyojuro acted like he normally did, he provided no useful or discernable details about the Demon Slayer Mark. Of course everyone fought to the death against demons. To do otherwise would be stupid.

Murata sighed, facepalming. Everyone turned to him, then he started his own version of events. "During our fight against Upper Moon Three, Kyojuro and I awakened our Demon Slayer Marks. The corps has records of this phenomenon, but they're scarce."

"If it's so powerful, why the hell do we not know more about it?" Sanemi grumbled.

"Well, they mention two things," Murata raised two fingers. "First, they only appear once the 'marked one' arrives, and anyone that awakens the mark dies by the age of twenty-five."

Without further evidence to the contrary, it meant Murata and Kyojuro had four and five years left to live, respectively. Not a single hashira would survive past a decade if they awakened their mark.

Gyomei was twenty-seven, and he would most certainly die if he awakened the mark.

Seiko was next, at twenty-three. Two years of life left if she awakened hers.

Kanae was twenty-two, which would leave her with three years left.

Sanemi, Makomo, Sabito, Obanai, were the same age as Murata.

Mitsuri was nineteen, while Shinobu was eighteen.

It painted a grim future. Yet, it was business as usual for the corps. There was no guarantee of survival in even the best case scenarios, and countless people have died in the profession of demon hunting. To be daunted by such a price was insulting.

A hashira had more resolve than that.

Kagaya, sitting on his futon while being supported by his wife, looked to Murata despite his blindness.

"Many in the past...have tormented themselves regarding...the mark. If you will, Murata...could you explain how to awaken it?"

Murata took in a deep breath and began explaining the process. "If I remember right, then two physical requirements must be met; an extremely high heartrate and a body temperature above thirty-nine degrees."

Shinobu perked up as she confirmed Murata's words. "When the kakushi reported to me, they mentioned those same things. But, to reach that state is life-threatening."

"I believe the difference between those who awaken the mark and those who don't is death," Murata said.

The courtyard settled with silence upon Murata's conclusion. The hashira digested the information, already planning on the best ways to obtain the mark.

"There's...something else," Kagaya said. His bandages made him appear even more sickly than usual, but his presence remained calm and patient.

"Demon activity...has been increasing," he coughed.

The implication hung like a heavy weight. A 'hashira training' of sorts cannot be implemented without most of the hashira present, but the increasing threat to human life made it difficult for them to stay in their estate and hone their training.

Murata considered the unfortunate timing. But on the other hand, if the hashira met stronger demons, then the chances of awaking their mark would increase.

Provided they didn't immediately die.

If Muzan was acting so aggressively this early, he was likely pressuring his demons to be efficient and not waste time.

Maybe, maybe not. The individual personalities of the Upper Moons were not easy to work with.

The rest of the day was spent planning and brainstorming their next course of action.

-

"Again, thank you for the blood."

Tamayo worked on her medicines with unnerving concentration as Yukiko took notes. Akaza's blood was the most potent so far. Unfortunately, they were going through it too quickly.

Hopefully, they would get closer to a cure.

Murata waved it off, a question burning in his mind. "Any progress on Yushiro?"

Tamayo stilled before letting out a small sound of resignation.

"Yes and no. I received the news from the recent hashira meeting, and it gave me an idea I'm hesitant to pursue."

Murata raised a brow, waiting for her to continue.

"While I've been honing my connection to Yushiro, it brings risk. Especially if Muzan becomes aware of it," Tamayo began.

It wasn't a new topic. The idea that Muzan could intercept and thereby find where Tamayo lived wasn't lost on them. If Tamayo delved too hastily or if Yushiro broke down completely, then Muzan could take advantage of that connection.

Though, due to the lack of intercept, Tamayo was certain of Yushiro's mental state. If he were completely broken down, then their connection would've been severed.

"In addition, we are getting closer to a cure for Nezuko. Perhaps less than a half a year at this rate."

Murata smiled at that. It was amazing progress.

"And with the news of the mark, I had a thought. If I purposefully let my guard down, allowing Muzan to view my location and work through Yushiro, it would serve as the perfect bait, would it not?"

"I see where you're going with that, but Muzan is a coward. He wouldn't do anything unless it was guaranteed to work. Wouldn't he think it's a trap?" Murata asked.

Tamayo smiled maliciously and it admittedly felt creepy. "That's the beauty of it. It is definitely a trap, but Muzan cannot afford to ignore it. A way to cure demons, alongside my location and by extension, the Ubuyashiki family? Even he would jump at the opportunity to get rid of loose ends."

She closed her eyes, already imagining several agonizing ways for Muzan to die. She looked at Murata, a favor on her lips.

"While we are getting closer to a cure, I predict we'll run out of samples before making more than one vial."

Murata sighed. What a slave driver. "I understand, but that's if I encounter another Upper Moon."

Tamayo smiled at him.

-

The Butterfly Estate was busy. With increased attacks, more and more slayers were coming to recover from their injuries.

As for Murata, he had a good idea of where Daki and Gyutaro could be. With Tengen's notes, it wouldn't take long to locate Upper Moon Six.

That's if they were still Upper Moon Six or not and whether they were still in the Entertainment District. They likely were, but it wasn't certain.

Regardless, Murata had to work with what he had, and he set out to find Tanjiro. The boy should be recovered by now, especially since he wasn't as injured as in the original Mugen Train mission.

Unfortunately, Inosuke was on a mission so the boar couldn't be recruited. Takeo was with Yuichiro and last he heard, Zenitsu was still working with Tengen.

Luckily, since Tanjiro had the mark, it meant he was stronger. He should be able to take Daki on.

Murata, with his mark, had confidence he would defeat Gyutaro. With Nezuko's flames, he wouldn't need to worry about poison either.

He found the boy stretching with the Butterfly girls.

"Murata! How have you been?" Tanjiro bowed to him as he finished his stretches.

"No need for that," Murata said uneasily. It was uncomfortable, having Tanjiro look at him with stars in his eyes.

"I'm recruiting you for a mission. I heard you were cleared by Shinobu earlier, so get ready. I plan to leave tomorrow morning."

Tanjiro easily accepted, and Murata made his own preparations.

Alone in a room with his materials, he looked at something he hoped to never use.

Looking at the makeup kit, he inwardly cursed and thanked Tengen.

-

The journey to Tokyo progressed without a hitch. Renting a room at an inn close to the Entertainment District, Murata laid out his plan.

"There's one house that I suspect hiding a demon," Murata explained. "You...are aware of where we're going, right?"

Tanjiro nodded. "We're going to the Entertainment District!"

Murata sighed. "Yes, but I'm asking if you know what that means."

"It's where people go to have fun, right?"

Tanjiro, a pure and well-meaning rural boy.

"Well, yes. Anyway, I need to disguise you since the house only takes in girls. I'll have you infiltrate the Kyogoku house, because I believe that's where the demon is hiding. We'll be using the crows every night to communicate. Now, how familiar are you with the art of makeup?"

Tanjiro gulped, seeing the uneasy way Murata prepared his tools.

He sat still, holding in the urge to sneeze as Murata peppered his face, making it look softer and trying to mask the scar on his forehead.

Admittedly, it was difficult to blend it in his face because of its awakened nature. Murata considered just foregoing the disguise and have Tanjiro infiltrate with him, but he wasn't exactly sure if Daki was in the Kyogoku house. It was his best lead, but not a certainty.

If news of a sneaking swordsman traveled, then Daki would have time to lay a trap or escape.

Finishing the last touches, Murata handed a mirror to Tanjiro's face.

It was only slightly better than Tengen's version, except he had Tanjiro's hair tied into a big ponytail.

All in all, Murata was proud of himself.

A knock on the door interrupted his musings. Standing up to carefully greet the guest, he paled.

Makomo stood in front of him, a twitch in her veins and a eerie smile.

"I heard of an interesting mission taking place with Tanjiro. It's something I expected Tengen to do, but I'm surprised, Murata."

"Well, there's notes of a–"

Makomo gripped the door with unnatural strength, causing it to crack.

"Go on, continue."

Murata could feel a headache forming in the back of his head.

A/N: Work, work, work. Additionally, I'm still thinking of the fights in the Infinity Castle. I have some ideas of the matchups and who fights who. Still in progress, though.
