What's Junk? (The Mech Touch)

I058 New
One of the things that tripped a lot of people up was how easy or hard something was to accomplish. This sounded very silly, but it was a truth that far too many people got tripped up in. Take the following line: Pick up the package from engineering and bring it to the bridge. That sounded easy. It could become harder in implementation quickly. If the package was carriable it'd take ten to fifteen minutes on the ship, assuming you had someone available. If the package required a forklift it could take up to an hour or more and would block traffic. That was the essence of what made logistics simple on the surface and monstrously difficult in reality.

Construction was similar. There were mechs out there that were notorious hanger queens. One of them was outright famous in Ves Larkinson's work with Third Rate mechs. It was frequently described as a cup of overpacked noodles and required something on the order of twice as much work to repair as other mechs. Bolt usually avoided a lot of that in his creations. The Wounded Angel was probably the worst of his designs to make and maintain, and that was because the wing was fiddly. This was of course ignoring expert mechs. Those were a special sort of hell to work with and Wrench Rats had started developing specialized teams to maintain and handle them.

Recruitment was another thing that sounded easy on paper. In practice it typically took roughly six months to a year for a new recruit to get a handle on things after you did the required background investigation. If these recruits were good and the job easy, they could contribute immediately, but that contribution was highly variable. It simply took time for people to fit in and adapt.

"All right, new mech from the big boy just came in and we need at least a dozen immediately!" The foreman shouted out and glanced over the group he'd gathered for this. It was a mix of new recruits and old hands.

"What's with the blank signs?" One of the men asked incredulously.

"Can't read freshie?" A Wrench Rat asked back.

"You looking to fight?!" The man shouted and shook a fist.

That sort of thing usually smoothed itself out over time, but it was probably best to address it now. "Oldies, get prepping. Freshies over here." The foreman ordered and glanced at them all as they gathered.

It wasn't a really cohesive mix. Most of them were from shattered Friday units, but they'd all come from everywhere and had been attached to separate units. This meant they all had different attitudes and ways of doing things.

"Gonna start with this." The foreman pulled a few squishy and colorful toys in the shape of large bolts out of his toolbox. He then threw it at the people, nailing several of them in the head. "This is yer daily percussive maintenance."

"What?" "Hey!"

"Got yer attention?" The man asked as he activated a small callback button and had the toys return to the box. "Wrench Rats do things ya don't expect, but at our core we make mechs. And if ya think yer better at some of it, ya bring it ta me and we'll see if it is better. The signs are alerts and lessons we've learned. If you see someone do something stupid or think o' something that'll help ya write it on the sign."

"Got it sir!"

Military training produced that sort of response more than anything else. The foreman sighed quietly before he continued. "Now, we do things in a block, which means everyone works on the entire mech in a construction bay. Armies and factories do em in lines. That's fine if ya'll want a good thousand of middling quality. We ain't tolerating middling. As part of that, towards the end you'll hear some music. That's ta get you into the proper mindset."

There was no response but the man knew for a fact that they were confused. In any other shop the leader would just leave it there and not explain it, but these newbies needed to actually understand for it to work. If they didn't the end result was a pain in the ass to align right.

"Ya'll know the glows right?" The Wrench Rat leader asked as he tried to lead them to the correct conclusion. "Ya ever guess why the Son of War needed ta be decorated?"

"Thought it was some designer bullshit personally." One man called. "Got a few classes before I got called up and some designers can do wonders."

"Designer education? If ya got enough we can switch you over to one real quick." The foreman immediately asked back.

His request got a wince. "I got introductory classes only." The man admitted. "And didn't do well. If I had I wouldn't have been drafted like I had been."

"Don't care about grades. If you're willing ta try we're willing to let ya. It's literally just Bolt holding up the sky at the moment. He's good, but he ain't a god yet." The foreman said with a chuckle before continuing. "But yer right that it is designer bullshit. It's also designer bullshit we can measure and effect. It's a sorta mental component. Ya'll know how Hexxer production lines have fanatics on their best factories? That helps make potent Glows. We don't want nor need that. Just need ya to get in the mood a bit. Music works pretty well."

The explanation didn't seem to be taking, but the foreman didn't let that get to him. He instead directed everyone to start the construction of the new mech. That at least was fairly easy to get started.

Valefar had some fairly clean construction lines. That'd always been a minor strength of Bolt's designs once you ironed out the steps in the first run, but this one felt even better than the others. The way it was designed was almost tailor made to help their typical style. It was almost hypnotizing really.

"Ah hell." The foreman muttered as he realized something. "Everyone back." He called out. "We got a charmer!"

"Charmer?" Someone asked before another of the older Rats cheered out. "Hell yeah! Praise God, Buddah, and the Old Kings!"

"Yeah, yeah, get it outta yer system." The man muttered with a sigh at the small celebration.

"Could someone fuckin' tell us what a charmer is?" That was one of the newer Rats rather than the confused new recruits.

"Ahem. Old tech lingo. Designers don't think we know about it." An older Rat explained as he backed away from the still finished mech. "Bigger and badder mechs make ya think they're the biggest and baddest. Everyone away. Don't look at the blueprint or the parts too hard. We're gonna have ta give it Rat Special."

"Fer the newbies, there are mechs so good that yer charmed into thinking they're the best. They aren't, but you'll think that way if ya let yourself get too deep into it." The foreman explained. "It's a good thing that our home-grown miracle boy can do it, but we gotta do the next part now fer all the new guys."

While the explanation was happening a few of the older rats had procured some very large wrenches. They moved up to the unbuilt mech and began to hammer at it with them. There was no pattern to the hammering really. Just a few smacks here and there to make the parts less than prestine.

"All right, everyone take a look." The leader ordered. "No I'm not kidding. Take a look and grab a part. We're recycling this run."

Utterly mystified, everyone did as ordered. It felt very silly on the surface. It wasn't. The 'charm' effect was an old thing known to many veteran fabricators. The best ways of countering it were with line-style assembly. The second best way was simple experience. Once you've assembled a thousand different mechs of various types, a real good one didn't feel that impressive anymore. The third best way was what they'd just done. Wreck one of them and recycle it.

Someone more educated in spiritual matters would have identified these methods as something like the following: Limiting the exposure, building resistance, and denying the concept with another one. It was one of those lingering bits of wisdom hidden in professions most people dismissed.

After that run the foreman had everyone get back to work. The first Valefar formed relatively quickly. It was in fact one of the fastest and easiest assemblies the team had done. Even the fancy hidden special sauce settled in quite well.

That didn't mean that the people who made the mech were spectacularly happy about it. The mech looked dangerous. The red highlights, sharp horns, and slightly spiked armor made it look like deadly. The presence was even worse. Everyone had to acknowledge that this mech was a monster. It didn't feel like a very safe weapon really.

Naturally the pilots who wanted swordsmen absolutely adored it.

With the 2-hander, I was expecting The Berserker Armor as a mech. So this is just Arthas Menethil Death Knight armor... I assume Lily's expert version with space warping would be Arthas Menethil Lich King armor?

It had to be said that the Wrench Rats and Lilly weren't generals. They were Third Rate brawlers and scavengers before they'd been catapulted into Second Rate. They were not exactly master tacticians and did not really have much strategic ability at all. Their only strengths were in their salvage skills, and being 'rats.' Or in different terms they knew how to avoid cats while getting cheese. So they'd decided going into this that they'd play to their strengths rather than try to play at something they weren't.

Their first job had been a warmup on an old battlefield. Their second job had been a tentative recruitment and shakedown mission. This one would be a bite. There were a lot of reasons for this, but it ultimately boiled down to reputation once more. They needed to be seen by both sides as dangerous and valuable. Reputation, contacts, and sheer experience would create a shield that they could use to fend off the inevitable attempts to backstab.

"I hope you know what you're doing." Melinda commented as they approached the planet.

"It is risky, but less than you'd think." Lilly consoled the other woman. "On paper it's a fortified planet that has fallen to the enemy. The Hexxer should got a lotta people here."

"You don't think they do?"

Around them the shuttle began to rattle as it descended. It was a very steep insert, and the rattling was enough to make the low power mechs shake. They'd give no warning, nor had they given any chance of reaction. The approach had been as fast as possible.

"Oh we know they do, but this place is juuust enough to the side that they've put their less useful forces here." The expert explained. "Also, planets like this don't just quietly roll over. They've been fighting since they won. We hit one of the key places and then grab what we can before scurrying and taunting."

The final call sounded and the mechs dropped as the woman finished. Lilly spread out Morning Star's wings as she dropped slightly, but kept herself firmly above everything. Around her she could see ruined and broken fortifications as far as the eye could see. Several places still burned. It was very familiar. The tech might have changed but the atmosphere stayed the same.

Below her other mechs hit the ground. Melinda immediately moved into a shield wall. Lilly tilted her head as she surveyed the area. The enemy camp should be...

"Looks like they're being slow." The expert noted the enemy positioning and the lack of full deployment.

"CORPSE THEIVES! DEFILERS!!!" The screech on the open comms would have deafened people if it wasn't through radio and automatic volume controls. "You dare come here?! Before me?!"

Willpower rose and an expert's mech sped out of a battered camp with a readied sword. Lilly tilted her head the other way as she examined it and the still deploying mechs. She'd really expected better deployment wise. There wasn't visible damage, but there were not well repaired mechs here.

Not that this would be easy. That was a brutal looking expert offensive knight. Lilly wished that Bolt wasn't nursing a headache and nosebleed, she could use some analysis. She'd have to make due. This wasn't something she hadn't done before, but sometimes it felt better to have him ready to help. Ah well.

She dived down. The expert rose to meet her, but she twirled around the sword-swipe and moved toward the gathering enemies. This didn't buy her that much space, but she didn't really want space. She wanted people in her range.

"Foul thing!" The expert shot out. "As expected by the bride of that vile thief."

"Thief now?" Lilly asked with amusement even as a warning twinged on her senses.

One wing moved and a rifle shot hit it instead of her head. A small explosion resounded and Lilly noted that there was more damage than expected. That wasn't a normal rifle shot.

"Sister, do not speak to the foul thing's slave!" Another expert shouted out.

"Slave too?" Lilly asked, but didn't get a response as they cut away from the public channel. What were they telling people about her and Bolt?!

"Venerable Lilly, there are two experts!" One of her people shouted out something she already knew.

This was going to be tricky. It was also why they'd needed two experts to feel really safe doing this. Why did they have two here though?! Even one was pushing it! This was not a prominent front, and the Hexxers hadn't known where they were heading. She was missing something! And she didn't have time to think on it.

Lilly did an almost dance like dodge as she avoided the sword while ignoring the pot-shots from the enemy mechs. Her aggressive positioning had put her in the face of the army, which was good for Morning Star's power, but bad to avoid damage. Fortunately Morning Star was a defensive mech at heart, so she could endure the random shots of the chaff. It was the experts that were the problem.

She was extremely glad for the spirit helping her as she moved. Paying attention to two experts at once was not easy. The rifleman was better than the swordsman as well. Her positioning was clever enough that Lilly couldn't just rush her way and overwhelm her first.

Blades of light formed around Morning Star as her systems grabbed power from nearby enemies. Lilly eyed everyone around her and then sent one blast towards the swordsman. The woman dodged, but two mechs behind her were utterly melted into uselessness. A bullet slammed into one of her forming weapons to no effect before she fired another one. Was the expert trying to destabilize them?

"Not that easy." Lilly muttered to herself and shifted to block the next series of shots with her wings. the defensive appendages absorbed the damage, but were not standing up well.

She was getting pressed here. Lilly pulled in more energy and formed another blade. She had twelve now. Yet this did not mean she was winning. The swordsman might have been the lesser of the two experts, but she was still an expert. She'd already worked out the timings of her attacks based on her movement. Which meant Lilly had to be creative to catch her.

Morning Star's attention snapped to the rifleman and she fired off two of her blasts. At that range the high powered assault was possible to react to if you were an expert. As the woman dodged and Lilly fired off three more towards the oncoming swordsman without turning. Sometimes the simplest traps were the best. Morning Star didn't really care about what direction she was facing when she needed to fire.

Two of the the three blasts hit. The mech's armor dripped off and the underlying muscles were exposed. The damage was not enough to stop it charging forward and into the range that favored the sword. Lilly took a slash across her chest armor and then a shoulder joint in less than a second before she twisted to face her opponent. She'd miscalculated. That should have downed the expert! Now she had to compensate.

One of Morning Star's hands reached out and the gluttony system pulled. The rest of the Swordsman's armor pulled off and Lilly formed another light-sword. Now it was time to finish this one. Then she could get the other expert!

Another series of rifleshots came from the side and this time Lilly couldn't really dodge or deflect them. Her back armor took the hits well but some sort of resonance effect began to sap her movement. A mote of panic flowed through her as she realized that she couldn't finish the swordsman now. That sword was rising up.

Lilly chuckled internally, and then laughed out loud. Around her snow began to fall as her allies engaged and she flared her willpower. She hadn't wanted to reveal every trump card here, but she was going to have to if she wanted to live. She'd let her pride and eager aggression put her in a spot that she now had to fight her way out of. Fine then. Time to lay out all her cards. Lightning crackled and her opponent aborted her swing to back up as Morning Star pulled in lightning.

The retreat was far too late to save her.

Lily is even more dangerous than they expected.

Two on one, she still wins. Although, part of that is Bolt's creation.

Serious team, those two.

"Slave too?" Lilly asked, but didn't get a response as they cut away from the public channel. What were they telling people about her and Bolt?!

I want to know, too!

The hurt was like a knife in his breast. It cut at his heart and made him bleed every second, every minute, every day. His soul ached. The only solace he had was in his blade and in the battlefield. He knew it was not healthy. He also could not find it in himself to care. Being a blade was better than thinking.

Naoto didn't want to think about what he'd lost. The witches that had taken everything. Recalling it all just made him hurt more. He lost hours mired in pain and agony every time he tried, so he'd stopped trying.

He'd signed up with the Wrench Rats because they'd promised he'd be able to fight the Hexxers. They'd needed pilots and he'd needed more purpose than sitting on the planet waiting for rescue. Credit to them, they'd quickly diagnosed what he felt and had tried to treat him a bit before throwing him into the mech, but you couldn't help someone that didn't wish for help.

The pilot moved forward and slashed out with his Valefar with no finesse and very little thought. Some part of him started to wake up as he did so. The purity of the blade and his mission drowned out the pointless circling depression and dragged him into reality.

He found himself wishing that he'd been able to practice more now that his sense was returning. This mech was beautiful and deadly, but one that deserved more than a broken pilot like him. If you wanted to use it properly you had to wield it knowing how much force you needed right at the moment. Too much and you burned yourself down. Too little and you took too much damage. There was a very sword-like logic to it that actually made him almost eager to explore and push.

Not that he needed to push just yet. The Torment Guards in front of him were in full form at the moment. The enraging effect they gained had to be seen to be believed. He hadn't really understood it until now. The thrumming feeling of the banner combined with how they charged made it seem like hell itself had been unleashed and was pushing him forward. A cold hell, with the snowflakes and mist.

It was like the old battlefield dramas. Naoto almost smiled as he followed. He felt alive and whole enough that he could pretend now. In front of him was the enemy. Behind him were new comrades that would have his back. The pain and despair still lurked, but they were suppressed. Everything revolved around his blade and he'd wield it well when he could.

Another enemy fell down with another crude slice that made him wince. His form was worse than his heart at the moment. He was only winning because these weren't the elite Hexxers. They were the young and unready, stationed here because the witches had needed bodies. The challenge was in numbers rather than skill. Naoto pushed his mech up to the 9 on the output and it started to heat as a defensive knight tried to oppose him. This would take more than a singular move. Perhaps enough to end his miserable existance?

Up went the sword. Down it slammed into the shield in a deliberate strike. The enemy mech jerked as it tried to compensate, and a series of bullets slammed into the opening. Behind him one of the Forgotten Soldiers appeared out of nowhere and fired again. The mech stumbled. Amateurish. They were trying to get space instead of keeping up their guard.

Naoto pulled his sword back to let them. As they pulled away he grabbed the middle of his long blade and stabbed with the sharpened tip into the offered gap they'd so helpfully given him. The precise slice cut through the armor and into the midsection. That was enough for the 'poison' to do the rest. The mech jerked and then dropped as its systems were eaten from the inside out. A black mark etched itself on his mech. Another tally.

The lightning coming down interrupted his flow. It was like the wrath of the gods had descended, and the man had no idea what was going on. He turned quickly but found his vision blocked by snow and bodies. He consulted his sensors next. Venerable Lilly was at the epicenter.

"Protect Venerable Lilly! Find that rifeman!" Commander Melinda called out even as her mech moved to interpose itself between a faltering Morning Star and the rest of their opponents.

Naoto didn't think. He acted. The output was shoved to the 10. His mech surged. Power flowed and heat raised to just below dangerous. Parts creaked. He moved. Around him his allies were doing the same.

"Not downed yet." Lilly called out.

"Respectfully, you are right now." Was the quick rejoinder.

His next cut bisected mech and pilot at the same time. Valefar's increased output and his increasing need to move didn't allow him to play at mercy or fairness. He cut and the enemy fell. More tallies formed, but he knew in his heart that they were weak things barely worthy of noting. Valefar wanted proper victory, not killing weaklings.

There, the expert mech was angling to try to shoot Lilly. He could see her fire off a shot and the hit nearly total Melinda as the leader desperately tried to keep their expert alive. She then moved, but there were no other places to move to. Her allies were dropping like flies. The cover was non-existent. Their numbers had been brutalized by his allies and now she had nothing left to cover her.

"Die witch!" Naoto shouted out and then grunted as the expert mech almost contemptuously kicked him away before he could cut.

Around him several of his teammates tried to attack as well. The woman had to turn from targeting Lilly to shooting at them. They died quickly. One, two, three shots at most if they were a Torment. Naoto had to comfort himself that most weren't dead, but the expert wasn't shy about trying to shot the cockpit if she had the angle. His comfort disappeared as one of his fellow swordsmen died through a perfect shot through the cockpit.

Not again! The dial moved up to 11 and Valefar burned and howled at the same time.

Either he or his opponent died! He charged forward and swung his sword. The massive blade whistled through the air and was deflected by a gauntlet and a step into the arch. It barely chipped the armor. This was the difference between an expert and a person. A killing strike was nothing to that divide.

Let him die fighting then. Valefar seemed to agree, and Naoto swung again, and again. Each strike was crude and frenzied. It was fast, that was all that mattered. It forced the woman attention on him for one, two...

"Naoto I'd rather die than be saved by such crude swordsplay." Venerable Lilly's voice came on his private channel.

Slightly distracted he lost the rhythm and the expert jumped back while raising her rifle. A blast from Lilly forced her to stop and she shifted for a moment before focusing on him once more. Around her the final Hexxers were starting to fall. Even her fanaticism wouldn't stop her from dying here, so she quite obviously was looking to kill someone else.

"Focus Naoto. You wield the weapon. You do not let it wield you." Lilly's voice was oddly calm.

"Venerable-" The man attempted to respond before she overrode him.

"You call yourself a swordsman do you not?!" Lilly demanded and fired another shot to keep the enemy expert from simply destroying him as they talked. "Prove it now!" The voice demanded his response.

The man felt a bit shaky for some reason. Why was she not, no. He knew why she was doing this. Even as time slowed down for him he knew why in his heart. Was he a broken blade? Yes. Did he want to stay one? Become a raging monster?

He turned the dial down to five. Valefar vented mist as it calmed down. Naoto shifted his weapon over his shoulder and presented his unarmed side to the enemy. Quietly, carefully. It was a ready stance as perfect as his faulty understanding could take.

Fanatic to the end, the enemy expert didn't much care to observe what he was doing. All she knew was that Lilly wasn't firing and he was in front of her. She aimed and fired.

The bullet, aimed for his cockpit practically eviscerated his mech even with his dodging it. The innards were exposed, but he still lived. One step forward. His sword spun into an overhand strike. Slow and ponderous it wouldn't have hit a normal pilot, much less an expert. The woman moved to the side and fired once more.

Step two followed as parts of his mech shattered. A shoulder strike. The woman didn't dodge so much as try not to get hit too hard. His shoulder impacted her and both mechs rocked. His more than hers. The expert could probably see his next step. He still took it. Valefar output roared to 11 once more and he spun, hitting the boosters just right.

The spinning slash was wide and deadly. The long sword properly used had tremendous speed and range. The expert was forced to avoid it and the nanomachine poison splashed against her. That was it! The non-willpower enhanced attack wouldn't do much, but it would degrade her armor. His will firmed. He could almost feel his mech hungering.

Another strike. His form was better now. A proper swordsman could predict every move the enemy would make. They'd defeat the enemy three steps after the first exchange. An expert intuitively did this without training. He'd spent years honing himself. A rifleman versus a swordsman at close range was a loss for the rifleman. Only her expert status kept him from winning. The gap should have not been possible to cross, but here and now he knew that his blade could cross it.

Two, three, four. His mech was about to die from self inflicted fire, stress from his near breakthrough, and the damage he'd taken. That was ok. One more. The last one.

By this point the riflemen had been forced into full defense. The pilot knew she was in trouble. Out of options she used her rifle to block his last strike. It didn't matter. The sword was being wielded properly the first time in his life. That was enough. Naoto broke through and his ascension finished as the enemy dropped into two parts.

"At least the expert mech will be easy." Lilly muttered before his comms cut off and his mech shut down.

Naoto couldn't help the laugh that came out of his throat. A black tally etched itself on his mech and it almost purred even as the damage made it stop. Yes, his expert mech would be very easy. He was already in it, it just needed a tune up.

So I guess now that theres been a breakthrough in one of them all the Valefar mechs will become just a bit stronger, a bit faster, and a bit better at leaching spirit from their kills. That sort of thing has the potential to snowball if it happens any more.
