With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"Because if your father found out that I brought you to the office of a pornographic talent agency, he might come after me for reason entirely unrelated to our current mission."

Now if you had brought BATMAN to the porno agency instead, then he would have obviously been very enthusiastic about it.

Direct alterations to the brain caused by the formula and nearly half a century of being incapable of Hope, Love or Compassion. Although there is a chance that her brain has retain much of the plasticity it had when she was as young as she looks, which would mean she has far more potential to stop acting like a psychopath.

But can she, though? It's pretty hard to not be psychopathic when you can't feel any positive emotion aside from sexual pleasure or shadenfreude.

"Alright, I'm in his old office."

"And you couldn't take five seconds to pick me up because..?"
Because if OL can't acquire actionable intelligence from a deserted office with A power Ring, magic detector and fricking New God trace detector, then he might as well hang up his Ring. A teenager with well-trained detective skills isn't going to help much.

Richard doesn't sound amused.

"Because if your father found out that I brought you to the office of a pornographic talent agency, he might come after me for reason entirely unrelated to our current mission."
Especially if there's still material on-site. Recordings, photos, that sort of thing... I'm sure Robin's seen worse in his time with Batman, at least peripherally. But better safe from Batman's wrath than sorry. Besides, he'll get plenty of girls once he's all grown up.

The note on the door said that they were closed, and gave a contact number. Unsurprisingly, the adult entertainment industry has taken something of a hit since the broadcast, and that particular talent agency shut up shop. Which might explain why Mr. Leas sought out alternate employment. There was a burglar alarm active, but it wasn't difficult to take control of it. I'm wearing my stealth model power armour anyway just in case, but I doubt that I'll run into anyone.
And the more old-fashioned studios were probably shutting up shop anyway in the face of internet-based groups.

"I doubt they film scenes at the office, Oh El."

I look at… That table.

"My ring scans suggest otherwise."
Ew, ewewew... 😨 In the damn office? Man, that place must have stank some days, then.

"Oh? I kinda thought they just used a set."

"I guess sets are more expensive than renting an actual law office after closing time."
And there's also the likelihood of it being a casting couch setup too.

I can't stop myself cleaning it. That's got to be some sort of health and safety breach.

"Huh. See anything?"
I know adult entertainment studios usually require their 'talent' be free of sexually-transmitted diseases, but that's still gross.

Looking around… "Computers are gone. Filing cabinets are still here…" Quick scan, which is unobstructed. "Nothing interesting. Mostly brochures they might want to physically show people. Server… Gone too."

"They did say that the agency was closed. You gunna try and track down ex-employees?"
Or find where the fittings are stored. Probably quicker.

"No, I don't think that they'll know anything significant. I mean, Sally Sonic is a psychopath who enjoys making people suffer. If Mister Leas is a hostile New God then I don't see why he wouldn't have taken her into his confidence… Certainly before anyone else. She'd be his sort of person."
More than likely one of his prime under-the-table talents, no doubt.

"So..?"
"So I'm speculating. Desaad was Mannheim's point of contact on Apokalips, but we never saw him after the broadcast happened. In fact, we never saw him working with any New Gods."
Non-interference to minimise contamination of results, or something more meaningful?

"Not apart from Finality Man."

"But this was all an experiment, right? To see what happened when Earth had Anti-Life broadcast over it. So was Darkseid aware of it through Mannheim? Or-?"
If he was actively watching, he probably got an eyeful in those last moments.

"Or was there someone watching that we just didn't see." He thinks that over while I wave a New God detector at Mr. Leas' desk. It shows positive, but… So what? "Or they could have had something built into the broadcasters."

"Which would mean that they're looking at Batman quite hard right now. And possibly the Operatives."
Establishing a baseline level of 'contamination' relative to a month of Anti-Life would have been a sensible idea, though hard to manage.

"That would be… Bad."

"Right now I'm looking for physical evidence. New God technology."
Admittedly, you're not likely to find anything in a disused office. Much like the IT fittings, I doubt Sleez left anything incriminating here.

"We could just ask him. For all we know he's from New Genesis."

I tug at the wisps in the Honden, trying to feel if any part of them sticks to the physical structure of the building.
I can only imagine the sorts of things lingering. Probably a lot more likely than love, for sure, especially around the places involved in the recordings.

New God technology is sometimes easy to detect by power ring, and at other times completely impossible. I'm hoping that without the man himself here to control it, anything here will be inert and easy to find. I don't… Feel anything so far…

"Could he sense whatever you're doing?"

"Pass. Ask me another."
'Answer uncertain, try again later'. Honestly, compared to Atlantean magic, this is new and uncertain ground for OL.

"You got no idea at all?"

"I think that he'd have to be interfaced with any device to feel me touching it. But he might have a remote connection. Do we have eyes on him?"
Surveillance could be tricky, especially if he's sensitive to observation.

"No. Since we don't know exactly what he can do, I didn't want to confront him until we can get everyone together."

Makes sense. But…
Who knows what he's up to, and whether he's aware of your poking around...

"It doesn't look like there's anything here. Next step will be checking his former residence."

"Are you just being thorough, or are you looking for something in particular?"
Not gonna find a smoking gun, but if he can find the metaphorical firearms residue...

I look around the room one last time. "If I can find a device that suggests he's up to something nefarious, I'll feel a lot better…"

My eyes alight on the nameplate on the door.
Don't tell me. First initial, last name, and...

No.

"Robin, in your work in Gotham, have you ever found a criminal because they were using a really obvious pseudonym?"
And have they ever felt like fools for not catching such a link earlier?

"You mean, like 'Joe Kerr' or something? Just about all of them some time. Why?"

"Because I've just seen a sign which says 'S. Leas'."
And the penny drops!

"Yeah?"

"There's an Apokoliptian called 'Sleez'.""
Better not to ask what he's New God of, if anything. It's neither work-safe nor suitable for children. 😏

"And you knew that the whole time?"

"Y-yes, but he didn't look anything like the pictures I've seen, and… 'Leas' is an actual name."
Cut him some slack, Robin, this is his first 'obvious supervillain pseudonym', after all.

"What should he look like?"

"Like a bald muscular dwarf with yellowy green skin."
Definitely one to get his jollies vicariously, with that description.

"Can he shapeshift?"

"Not as far as I know. Though there's probably a technological way around that. He can do mind control, but I'm a hard target so I doubt that he was using a telepathic disguise."
Holographics, or doing the 'spiritual possession' thing, maybe.

"Has he ever..? You know, acted?"

"I.. hope not." Oh… No. "J'aarkn said that his agency's 'talent' had fewer psychological problems than talent from other places. Sleez can mind control people."

"Oh God. So… Supervillany Rape?"
Depending on the level of resistance, probably. Some who were uncertain but generally resigned might have found themselves being less inhibited...

I phase through the outer wall, then accelerate towards Sleez's former home. "And it sort of doesn't matter whether or not he's involved with the Global Peace Agency because that's definitely reason to arrest and interrogate him."

"I'll tell the rest of the squad. Do you know how tough he is?"
Well, anything to get him in a cell. Though on general principles...

"Stronger and tougher than a baseline human, but I don't think he's got true super strength. In my estimation, he'll probably retreat if he can't maintain control, but if he can shapeshift somehow then if we lose contact we might never find him again."

Okay, that's his apartment-.
The shapeshifting may be a thing unique to this version. Or it's technological. Either way, if OL can get a lock on him mystically...

I can't scan anything untoward, but I can scan places where unusually thick power cables have been cut off and some sort of heavy machine has been dragged out. And, yeah, he might just have been into metallurgy-.

"Ah, Oh El? I can't reach Kid or Artemis."
The traces are definitely damning. As for lack of contact... They are teenagers. Who's to say they're not taking a little alone time together, if you know what I mean? ...But with this guy involved, well...

Let's hope Sleez didn't catch them poking around, and set them up in the same situation his comics version did Superman and Big Barda. Hopefully it's innocent coincidence, but... At the least, it encourages a certain measure of haste when it comes to finding him now, unless OL can tap the Honden to ping their location. Which he probably could if he thought of it...

Unless Sleez got them in a scry-proof location.

But can she, though? It's pretty hard to not be psychopathic when you can't feel any positive emotion aside from sexual pleasure or shadenfreude.

I am assuming that the White Light that undid the effects of Anti-Life restored at least some of her capacity for positive emotions. I am pretty sure that at least most Psychopaths are capable of such emotions, it's just that they can't feel them very strongly.

The formula seemingly didn't alter her brain.

"Can't say I'm completely surprised." He ponders this information for a moment. "Is there something wrong with her brain? I'm not her biggest fan but if there's a biological basis maybe she could get it fixed."

"Not that I could see. It's weird; I kept nudging her to try and get an emotional response, her brain was lighting up in the right places but it didn't generate the normal emotional responses."

I honestly thought people would be more enthusiastic for content that can bring pleasure after Anti-Life.

It was probably for personal use.

Maybe the office is cheaper.

There are bad New Genesians, like Desaad.
"Oh God. So… Supervillany Rape
And probably hundreds of cases of it.
"Ah, Oh El? I can't reach Kid or Artemis
Shit.

New Gods don't like saying Darksied's name. Paragon!Paul is climbing his way to New God hood step by step, and he just said Sleez's true name. I don't think Sleez is going to prepare for a fight, instead I think he's going have convenient urge to flee soon enough.

The question is whether he chooses to flee like a smart man, or like an Apokalyptian who cares not at all for collateral damage.

I appear, desperately scanning in all directions for-.

My construct armour shudders as Apokoliptian blaster shots strike me in the helmet-. Different angles, and I can't see-.

A small screen appears in the bottom right of my visual field as my rings slow down the image: Wallace grinning maniacally as he runs around shooting me. Darn it. Without empowerment from a high-tier New God they shouldn't do much-.
I Deserve To Be Hurt
My armour… Thins, then fractures as the bolts keep coming. I restore it a moment later, drop a vertigo inducer and fly up-.

Wallace staggers for a moment, shakes his head-.

Down and grab!

"Kid Flash-!"

He shakes off the still-active inducer and blurs, my giant claw construct fracturing-.

Kinetic barrier-!

Damn it, lost-! What do those-?

GRAGH-agh! Up! UP!

Agh.

Okay. So I just got to re-enact Flash's attack on Superman in Dark Knight Strikes Again; use super speed to dash up, cover the super tough object in shaped charges and then dash out of the blast radius. New God weapons. My armour construct failed and my actual armour… It's going to be easier to just replace the outer plating rather than repair what's left. Okay, I-.

Alert.

I dodge left as an arrow screams past me-. Wait, what? Artemis is-. That's a New God bow, but she isn't a New God herself. Sleez has to be in the area, with… Some way of empowering her himself.

"Orange Lantern to Robin. Artemis and Kid Flash are being controlled. Send Donna but do not-."

"Arsenal's not mind control proof, got it. She's on her way."

Okay, so if vertigo inducers don't work, then-

More blaster shots fly up towards me, but they're a good deal easier to dodge now that I've got distance. Armour repaired, and-. Artemis has vanished again.

Options.

Defeat Artemis and Wallace, then go looking for Sleez. They'll fight me every moment and they're not exactly easy to contain, especially when I don't know exactly what they can do with him buffing them.

Look for Sleez. He's probably around here somewhere, and it looks like the.. employees are evacuating.

Look for his machinery. That-.

"I'm sending Roy to Simon's home, but it'll take him a few minutes to get there."

That's a sensible idea. I doubt that he'd put it in his office-.

The shots have stopped. And I can't see Wallace. Darn it, Sleez is trying to disengage. He doesn't need to defeat or kill me, just get away. He can dump the 'Simon Leas' identity easily enough, and it looks like his mental influence can linger…

I drop back down, construct armour replenished, as I start scanning for… Ugh, anomalies. Something that sticks out-.

Ah. Even well-trained people experience some fear when they're ordered to evacuate when a super fight happens in their place of work.

Alert.

I dodge and the arrow misses-. Detonates in mid-air and-. A chunk of my shield vanishes and-.

"So long-"

Charges appear on my exposed armour-

"-Oh El."

Get out.

Alright, back in the material world my armour just had its head destroyed by an Apokoliptian demolition charge, but floating here… I saw Wallace for a second perched on the roof to watch. Makes sense if Sleez is amping up his desire to inflict pain, except he's doing it in an entropic way rather than using an orange light substitute. He's motivated to harm rather than gain. Meaning that he will check my body in a second regardless of risk because he needs to know that I'm at the very least injured.

Two places I can go. Would he hang back, or-?

I

step back in on the roof, spraying a gallon of Trickster's anti-Flash goop around me!

"What the Hell-?"

And I trap Artemis, who is swiftly enveloped in the hardening non-Newtonian resin, but Wallace isn't-. Armour! And if he dashes up-. Spray again!

"He's not in-. Huh?"

Wallace ran up the wall and ran straight into the second spray. He tried vibrating to get himself free, but all that does is spread it faster. Though that.. does prove that he's gotten faster under Sleez's influence. And more impetuous. Normally, Wallace would recognise something like this stuff instantly.

And I'm stuck too, but that's a simple matter. While the goo can deal with construct energy fairly easily… Because Trickster knew that Flash and Lantern Jordan are friends, it can't stop me just stepping-.

Just stepping…

Right. So that's not me, but Sleez could easily have bodged together something to stop me moving to the Honden once he realised that was an ability that I had. But he didn't stop me the first time because… The device is traceable with our technology? Finite battery? Didn't want to split his concentration? Don't know.

Alright. The correct way to get out requires very precise sonic-.

Donna drops out of the air in front of me. "Where is he?"

"West, group of five. He's second from the back."

"Got it."

She spins in the air and rockets away. Sleez was intelligent enough not to simply block my ability to sense his emotions, but he didn't appear to be capable of faking them. The rest of the crowd were feeling at least some fear, even as they followed protocol by evacuating.

Alright. Precise sonic-.

WzzzEEEEN!

Yeah, like.. that?

The resin trapping Artemis cracks and fractures as her sonic arrow activates! Wallace is still trapped and she looks like she strained herself a little, but-.

She draws an x-ionised knife and starts walking towards me.

I appear, desperately scanning in all directions for-.

My construct armour shudders as Apokoliptian blaster shots strike me in the helmet-. Different angles, and I can't see-.
And attacked right off the bat. That means he was expected. Or that someone is reacting very quickly, which means Kid Flash has been mind-controlled. Hopefully without having done things he'd rather not have...

And with an energy weapon, he doesn't have to wait for the projectile to leave the barrel before moving, so as not to mess up his aim.

Wallace staggers for a moment, shakes his head-.

Down and grab!
Good hit with the vertigo. Might want to bind him properly, though, just to be safe.

"Kid Flash-!"

He shakes off the still-active inducer and blurs, my giant claw construct fracturing-.
Honestly, feels like OL is holding the tactical idiot ball here. Anyone else, he'd have accelerated, shackled and stunned them in a second... Still, a friend at risk probably makes him reluctant to go all out.

Kinetic barrier-!

Damn it, lost-! What do those-?
Drawback of fighting someone who knows some of your tricks: They can deal with them easily. Good thing KF doesn't know all his tricks.

GRAGH-agh! Up! UP!

Agh.
Joy of someone getting a lot more actions in a combat round than you do...

Okay. So I just got to re-enact Flash's attack on Superman in Dark Knight Strikes Again; use super speed to dash up, cover the super tough object in shaped charges and then dash out of the blast radius. New Gods weapons. My armour construct failed and my actual armour… It's going to be easier to just replace the outer plating rather than repair what's left. Okay, I-.
And Flashes tend to be that much faster than everyone else. Even Supermen. Makes them dangerous when they've got a nark on for you.

Alert.

I dodge left as an arrow screams past me-. Wait, what? Artemis is-. That's a New God bow, but she isn't a New God herself. Sleez has to be in the area, with… Some way of empowering her himself.
So that arrow was probably supersonic. Doubt she'll get to keep that afterwards, even if it can withstand her strength.

"Orange Lantern to Robin. Artemis and Kid Flash are being controlled. Send Donna but do not-."

"Arsenal's not mind control proof, got it. She's on her way."
Yes, Robin does know what he's doing, OL. Sadly, that backup will still be a minute or two out, even with the speed of Hermes or similar.

Okay, so if vertigo inducers don't work, then-

More blaster shots fly up towards me, but they're a good deal easier to dodge now that I've got distance. Armour repaired, and-. Artemis has vanished again.
Shoot and move. Good sniper tactics, and decidedly not superheroic methods. Drawing on her father's training, I see...

Options.

Defeat Artemis and Wallace, then go looking for Sleez. They'll fight me every moment and they're not exactly easy to contain, especially when I don't know exactly what they can do with him buffing them.
Although you can fix any permanent physical damage. The emotional damage, that might be trickier, especially if Sleez had time to get creative.

Look for Sleez. He's probably around here somewhere, and it looks like the.. employees are evacuating.

Look for his machinery. That-.

"I'm sending Roy to Simon's home, but it'll take him a few minutes to get there."
Looks like Robin's already ahead of you. Also, what employees? A different office, I assume? Either way they're smart to vamoose. Edit: Ah, the New God technology storage depot, and Sleez was lucky enough to be present... 😏 Superhero luck, eh?

That's a sensible idea. I doubt that he'd put it in his office-.

The shots have stopped. And I can't see Wallace. Darn it, Sleez is trying to disengage. He doesn't need to defeat or kill me, just get away. He can dump the 'Simon Leas' identity easily enough, and it looks like his mental influence can linger…
Yeah, fighting these two is just wasting time. But if they've been told to hurt people, you especially... They have to be restrained.

I drop back down, construct armour replenished, as I start scanning for… Ugh, anomalies. Something that sticks out-.

Ah. Even well-trained people experience some fear when they're ordered to evacuate when a super fight happens in their place of work.
In other words, it's raising chaff to his empathic visions. Albeit chaff he can see past by adjusting his senses a little...

Alert.

I dodge and the arrow misses-. Detonates in mid-air and-. A chunk of my shield vanishes and-.
Because of course she goes for the explosive arrowheads, knowing he can dodge basic shots.

"So long-"

Charges appear on my exposed armour-
Dangit, Wally...

Ah, retreating into the Honden. Smart, though it leaves them free to act.

Alright, back in the material world my armour just had its head destroyed by an Apokaliptian demolition charge, but floating here… I saw Wallace for a second perched on the roof to watch. Makes sense if Sleez is amping up his desire to inflict pain, except he's doing it in an entropic way rather than using an orange light substitute. He's motivated to harm rather than gain. Meaning that he will check my body in a second regardless of risk because he needs to know that I'm at the very least injured.
Ah, pumping up deeply-buried sadistic impulses, I bet. Or flat-out implanting them, since Wally is a nice kid.

Two places I can go. Would he hang back, or-?

I
Sleez is probably hauling ass away from here. If he was here at all, and not sending new lackeys out as distractions.

step back in on the roof, spraying a gallon of Trickster's anti-Flash goop around me!

"What the Hell-?"
The classic 'web them up' move. Can't fight if they can't move.

And I trap Artemis, who is swiftly enveloped in the hardening non-Newtonian resin, but Wallace isn't-. Armour! And if he dashes up-. Spray again!

"He's not in-. Huh?"
Wally is certainly predictable, even with mind-altering influences on him.

Wallace ran up the wall and ran straight into the second spray. He tried vibrating to get himself free, but all that does is spread it faster. Though that.. does prove that he's gotten faster under Sleez's influence. And more impetuous. Normally, Wallace would recognise something like this stuff instantly.
Which suggests the commands are either weakening their usual tactical skills, or Sleez is close at hand directly ordering them and didn't know what that was.

And I'm stuck too, but that's a simple matter. While the goo can deal with construct energy fairly easily… Because Trickster knew that Flash and Lantern Jordan are friends, it can't stop me just stepping-.

Just stepping…
Greediport jamming? Good grief.

Right. So that's not me, but Sleez could easily have bodged together something to stop me moving to the Honden once he realised that was an ability that I had. But he didn't stop me the first time because… The device is traceable with our technology? Finite battery? Didn't want to split his concentration? Don't know.
Or he thought that grenades-around-the-head trick would have gotten you, and realised his mistake after you noped out.

Alright. The correct way to get out requires very precise sonic-.

Donna drops out of the air in front of me. "Where is he?"
Ah, good, backup can get him while OL deals with the two mind-whammied young adults.

"West, group of five. He's second from the back."

"Got it."
Here's hoping she can resist his tricks.

She spins in the air and rockets away. Sleez was intelligent enough not to simply block my ability to sense his emotions, but he didn't appear to be capable of faking them. The rest of the crowd were feeling at least some fear, even as they followed protocol by evacuating.
I figured that's what it was.

Alright. Precise sonic-.

WzzzEEEEN!

Yeah, like.. that?
Looks like Artemis got there first.

The resin trapping Artemis cracks and fractures as her sonic arrow activates! Wallace is still trapped and she looks like she strained herself a little, but-.

She draws an x-ionised knife and starts walking towards me.
Hopefully without suffering hearing damage, though OL can fix that without too much trouble.

OL does seem to be taking it a bit easy here, right? Presumably to avoid injuring his friends, since a full response would be pretty overwhelming and destructive. Though it looks like he might have to get a bit rough anyway, unless Donna can get to Sleez-boy. One good knuckle-sandwich will make him very cooperative, I expect...

Hey complete random derailing question. I'm trying to get back into reading this but forgot where I left off. Does anybody re!her what chapter the MC kills that guys pet cat cuz that's the last main plot point I remember reading. Thanks.

Do you mean Teekl? Because he didn't kill her, he assimilated her.

If you mean when Paul accidentally permanently killed Teekl, that happened in Episode 52: Last Supper.

VERY interesting - though I am curious what Artemis's plan is here considering Paul's atypical response to pain, death and damage. Is this a mind control-borne desire to cause pain? Or does she have a plan?
Lose immediately, presumably. One's a Lantern, the other's a girl with a knife.

That should say 'God'.
Thank you, corrected.

Kills or turns into a construct? But either way that was a while ago. Teekl finally dies at the end of the first year, but gets turned into a conbstruct about a third of the way through the first six months.
Also, what employees? A different office, I assume? Either way they're smart to vamoose.
If you remember, Wallace and Artemis were sent to check on the New God technology storage depot.

'Apokoliptian'
Nice tactic. Has he stepped out to avoid attacks before?

I'm guessing there's more than a lack of fear that makes him think this is Sleez, but it'd be funny if this was just some random guy with Urbach-Wiethe.

Come to think of it, I'm hoping that we'll see more of this guy someday soon. I really enjoyed his chapters.

Edit:
I sigh. "No. After I took the initial sample and used it, the nanobots adapted to the technique I used to flash their memory. Everything that hadn't already adapted to the rats and the cat just shut down, and the same things happens to fresh samples."
