With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Wait, Hawk and Dove? Weren't they part of the Lord of Order/Chaos cosmic balance? Their patrons offered keeping other LoO/C away from earth by their presence to keep Grayven satisfied.

Shouldn't John be making their empowerment impossible? Or has John Constantine gone for a Wander outside reality?

They didn't get empowered in the SI timeline due to Constantine.

The Renegade remembered roughly what empowered them, and if you gave him a while to think about it then he might come up with T'Charr's name.

"We are demonstrating the effectiveness of a partnership between Order and Chaos. The two brothers have different temperaments, and yet they work best together. They cover one another's weaknesses and complement one another's strengths."

"And you're just giving them power. You have no plans to come to Earth yourselves."

T'Charr nods. "And our having this compact with them will prevent other Lords entering your realm, just as if we were present in person."

…wait, don't tell me Constantine granted them power?

Ah, the armoury. Haven't… Actually been back here for a while-.

I look around.

"Arsenal, where-?"
Ah, they moved his stuff out? Man, that feels kind of sad. I mean, he pretty much has moved out of the facility, but surely someone could have made use of the equipment. Then again, given the rotating membership, they probably needed the space.

"Storage."

"Ah."

He shrugs. "Sorry, but you weren't working here and I needed the space."
Power armour support equipment probably does take up space, especially if it isn't built into the infrastructure already.

I exhale slowly. "It's fine."

There's a power armour cradle-.
Ah, for Arsenal's gear, of course.

"How did you get my old armour reliquaries out of here?" I glance back at the door, checking that it hasn't gotten bigger-. No, same size.

"Oh, ah, I got Ghia'ta to move them. Zatanna shrunk hers down to doll house size and took it home. Yours is in one of the storage rooms."
Subspacing them, of course. Good to know Zee got her Sororitas-pattern armour in hand, though.

The neophytes are starting to bunch up behind us, so I move further into the room. Roy heads over to his power armour work station and takes position-.

"Did you design that yourself?"
I imagine he cribbed notes from OL's designs, and other power armour users known to the League.

"Yeah! I mean, it's based on F One pitstop tools and-" Outer plates unlock and are removed by robotic armatures and slotted into storage compartments for maintenance. "-a bunch of power armor animations I watched. Rocket Red helped out a whole lot." Then more armatures deploy with wheel guns to detach the interior mechanisms. "Way easier than putting it on myself."
As long as you can be sure the system knows where you are at any moment, because one armature moving in the wrong place and you've got a busted limb.

Toyman walks over to get a closer look. "That isn't bad."

"Thanks."

"I could improve it."
Yes, well, you've probably got all sorts of anime-inspired armour designs floating around in your head. Hardsuits, landmates and ACPAs, just for starters.

"Of course you could. You're a kid genius and I never even went to college."

I'm not sure what sort of response Toyman was expecting, but it looks like that wasn't it.
Probably assumed the 'jock' would get offended and defensive.

"If we're finished for the day, I could work on that now?"

"No thanks. I'd rather have something that I know how to fix."
And that's a good reason not to modify it. It'd be a hassle if the designer went rogue and couldn't repair it.

"I could build another machine to repair it."

"Is that a machine I could repair with High School shop class?"
I assume Hiro managed to work his way up from machine shop tech by making the machinery to make more advanced machines...

"No."

"Then thanks, but I think I'll keep going like I am now."
Plus, it'd be such a security risk.

Timothy ambles over, take everything in as the rest of the glass spread out across the room. "I could find some gnomes who could help you. So long as you just want it repaired."

"What, like those guys in-" He steps out as the last of the pieces of the armour are removed. "-Switzerland? Wouldn't they just steal the whole thing?"
I see Roy's been keeping up on the mission reports.

Timothy blinks. "You've actually-? You've met gnomes?"

"No, I… Missed that mission."
Fortunately. Although an arrow guy probably wouldn't have been essential anyway.

"Aldorf warren. I'm not sure how far the Swiss authorities got before the Anti-Life hit."

"They're the ones who worshipped that.. dragon, aren't they?"

"Drakul Karfang."
And good riddance to her. I hope the warren didn't get too badly hit by Anti-Life.

Risk turns away from feeling up one of my old railguns. "You fought a dragon?"

"I was part of the team that killed a dragon, yes."
OL made man-portable units? No doubt Roy is making good use of them.

"Sweet. Are there any other left?"

"Not as far as I know, and you'd need full biological and chemical protection gear before you confronted it."

"Why? Is it fireproof?"
Besides, there's no need to assume all dragons are bad guys.

"No, but it turns out that some dragons can breathe mind-altering chemicals. If I could have everyone's attention, please!"

They turn away from whatever caught their attention and face me.
Like kids in a candy store.

"For those of you who don't have an innate flight ability? Inertia belts are available." I gesture to the spare lockers which sit open against the wall. "They also-" Hawk and Risk are already hurrying over to grab theirs. "-come with manuals. Now, I trust you not to do anything too stupid-" Dove tilts his head back for a moment. "-but to be clear, practice somewhere where there aren't other people for you to fly into at the speed of sound."
And for goodness' sake, read the damn manual!

Hawk stops. "Wait, what?"

"Hawk, if you ran into someone going as fast as you can, what would happen to them?"
Something akin to being hit by a truck, I would imagine.

"They'd get… Pretty badly hurt?"

"Do you think it's different if you're flying?"
If anything, he'd hit harder, because all that force would end up directed into a smaller point of impact...

"Uh… No?"

Dove walks up to him and lays his right hand on his brother's shoulder. "Hawk, I want you to know that I'm proud of you. You've made real progress."
Ah, the innocent ribbing of brothers.

Hawk brushes his hand off. "F-. … Get lost."

Risk has already gotten his on-. And so has La'gann, who looks at me for confirmation. "Is this the same belt that I wore before?"
I don't see how they'd have improved on it any. It's a mature technology.

"Exactly the same."

He smiles and activates it, floating into the air and carefully drifting over-.
At least one of them can handle it fine. Hopefully he can help the others get used to it between classes.

My construct barrier is already covering the valuable equipment when Risk copies the motion La'gaan used to activate it. He shoots up into the ceiling, the inertia field flaring at it absorbs the kinetic energy of his impact. But he hasn't changed his posture, so he sort of slides across the ceiling, then drops slightly, and then slams into it again. This time he gets turned around and heads towards the machine I built Artemis to make new crumbler arrows. He slams into the construct barrier, and I clamp him in place.
Ugh, the equivalent of jamming the car in gear, hitting the accelerator and not letting up. At least neither he nor the stonework will take much damage.

"Deactivate it if you please."

"Uh. Urh. How?"
See? This is why you read the manual before getting on the bike, kiddies.

"Press the button and twist the dial the other way."

"Right, right." He presses and twists, it deactivates, and I set him on the ground. "Good ceiling!"
Maybe he needs the belt in training wheels mode for a bit...

"Yes, we all tested it at least once while we were learning for the first time. The manual's not that long, you can manage. If any of you actually manage to cause significant property damage because you can't be bothered to read it, you lose belt privileges. If you actually hurt anyone, you lose program privileges. Clear?"
That would be impressive, given how idiot-proof the belts are. Sadly, there's always a better idiot.

A round of nods, and Dove and Argent go and pick up their manuals while leaving their belts where they are. Aztek picks up both, but doesn't look impressed. "How will this help me defeat the Evil One?"
Does your armour have innate flight? What if they can disable that? Backups are always useful.

"It shows you that you can improve your effectiveness by adding equipment. Don't limit yourself merely to mastering the abilities already at your disposal. The Justice League computers have lists of every type of equipment we've ever encountered. If you want to augment your arsenal with something else, look it up."
Though check with people before you go yoinking something, especially if it's got a drawback.

Always helpful when the rookies get to improve their gear. Flight belts, proper armour, even handy weaponry for those without personal energy projection. Nothing like force multipliers when you can reasonably expect to end up fighting alien invasions, demonic lords or cosmic horrors someday. Best to prepare for it even if it never happens...

Timothy ambles over, taking everything in as the rest of the class spread out across the room. "I could find some gnomes who could help you. So long as you just want it repaired."

I know Tim Hunter is supposed to be some kind of a magical big deal, but I'm pretty vague on what the Future Greatest Wizard in the Universe (tm) can actually do at his current age and skill level.

Would be pretty funny if OL gives him a gun.

TIM: Wait I can have a gun?

OL: We're in America now.

Remove the bold, I think. This would have made sense if the previous sentence included 'damage anything' so I assume it was edited later.
No, I think that's fine.
I know Tim Hunter is supposed to be some kind of a magical big deal, but I'm pretty vague on what the Future Greatest Wizard in the Universe (tm) can actually do at his current age and skill level.
I'm going to try and be explicit about that.
Would be pretty funny if OL gives him a gun.

TIM: Wait I can have a gun?

OL: We're in America now.
The SI realises that that wouldn't be acceptable to his colleagues.

Normally I'd go for the Dresden Files for a great example of why Wizards should absolutely have a gun. However in this case, since these are students, I figure they'll need a proper teacher.

Nnamdi adjusts his armour once more. He's not used to wearing clothes, much less steel/ceramic plates. Then he knuckle-walks across the testing area. Then he turns and walks back, ungainly balanced on his legs. Then he turns again and 'runs' back, a movement that's clearly a fight against falling over. Lastly, he tests the range of motion his arms have.

He doesn't look satisfied, but he looks less annoyed that he did when we started.

**It is acceptable. You are sure that the shield made by the belt is not sufficient?**

"It doesn't stop lasers or electrical discharges, and heat from plasma weapons leaks through."

What he's got doesn't provide great coverage, because I'm not actually an armourer. I've just got a big enough database to fake it. And the truth is that species shaped like gorillas don't usually create complex tool-using civilisations. Some species have stages like that, but evolving improved tool-using tends to cause them to gradually turn into standard pattern humanoids like humans. So there just aren't that many armour designs that I can crib from.

**Then I will accept it.**

I nod. "Do you want to practise with the belt's flight function?"

He shifts awkwardly. **I do not think that gorillas are meant to fly.*

"No, but neither are humans. I understand if you're not eager, but it's something that could save your life. Even if you generally avoid using it, it would be a good idea to understand how to use it."

He thinks that over for a moment.

**You are correct. What do you suggest?**

"Well, when my team learned to use them, we set up hoops in the main training room and made a game of flying the circuit as quickly as we could. Rocket was far better than the rest of us, obviously, but it only took a few hours to get the hang of it."

**Then I suppose that I should make the effort.**

We head out of the armoury and start down the corridor towards the training area.

"How are you finding living around humans?"

**Difficult. I know that they do not mean to be hostile when they show their teeth or stare at me, but it is… Uncomfortable. I usually use telepathy to force myself to see that they have no aggressive thoughts.**

"Is that instinctual, or learned?"

**All human cultures have the smile. All gorillas show hostility by bearing teeth. All primates except humans do. But I hope that I can learn not to respond this way. It is… Tiring.**

"How do the humans feel about you?"

**They do not see me. I maintain a telepathic illusion of being a human.**

I frown. "How does that work with security cameras?"

**It doesn't. I have been confronted by some very confused guards.**

"Uh. Well, generally I think secret identities are a bad idea, but I'm in the minority. But it might become an issue if you're knocked out or distracted badly enough that you lose focus."

**Perhaps. But so far Sam and I have covered for each other. We carry each other's contact details everywhere so that in event of a medical problem the other will be contacted by the authorities.**

"Nnamdi, if a man gets hit by a car and suddenly turns into a gorilla, they're going to call animal control whatever he's got in his wallet."

**But there are humans who turn into other types of animal.**

"Yes, but they're really rare. Most people will look at a gorilla and assume that the man they thought they hit wasn't hit, and that the gorilla is unrelated to him."

**I could wear a sign around my neck.**

"How annoying would that be?"

He itches his muzzle. **A t-shirt?**

"That sounds better. And who is Sam?"

**Sam Simeon.** I wince inwardly. **He was a member of our troupe who tried to escape from Gorilla City before your team arrived. He was wounded in the escape, and a human holiday maker found him and nursed him back to health. Unfortunately, by the time he had fully recovered, Gorilla City had been abandoned and he did not know where the rest of us were. Many things happened, but eventually William Glenmorgan was able to put us in touch with each other.**

"And he didn't want to go home?"

**Where we live now was never his home. His only surviving family was Grodd, and he had also left. And he had discovered a talent for art. That is not something he could do with our troupe.**

"Well, as long as he's happy. I-."

I step into the training room, and Risk is… Posing? In mid-air. He notices us a moment later and… Stops flexing.

"I thought you'd gone home?"

"Ah, no? Why the fuck would I do that?"

"School work? Rest?"

"Guidance councillor always said I needed to learn to apply myself." He floats down… Ah, he's gotten pretty good with that. "So I'm applying myself."

I nod approvingly. "I know the feeling. It's nice to have something you actually want to be good at for its own sake, not because you're expected to."

He frowns, tilting his head to the right. "Huh. Never figured-. Uh, yeah. And seriously, thanks for the flying belt. Not being able to get around fast was holding me back as a superhero, and my first day here that's just fixed."

"You're welcome. That sort of thing is why we're doing this."

"So... What do I gotta do to get some of that sweet power armor?"

"Ah. Sorry, but at your level of strength and toughness, there isn't… Really any power armour I can build that would improve either. The Amazons might be able to build plat armour for you-."

"Nah. Regular armour's lame-ass."

"Not as lame-ass as getting shot, but… Your decision. I-."

My ring blinks.

"Sorry, I have to take this." I raise the ring to my face and step away. "Go."

"So, what you gunna call yourself?"

Ghia'ta's face appears over my ring. "Paul, we need you in India. Some of the unreformed Kobra cultists have stolen a mutagen and I can't find them."

**Nnamdi.**

"No, I mean your superhero name. What's it gunna be?"

"Sure, I'll be there in a minute."

**[Disinterested shrug]**

"Look, if you're fighting with me, you gotta have a cool name. Everyone else has got one… Even 'Hunter' kinda works."

I close the channel and turn to the new students. "Risk, if you don't need to rush home, would you mind helping Nnamdi learn how to use the belt?"

"Sure, no problem."

"Thank you. Right, I'll leave you to it. Back in a few minutes."

**Sam Simeon.** I wince inwardly

Hey, lots of last names describe a persons ancestry.

Granted, they usually describe whatever occupation their ancestor had.

. His only surviving family was Grodd, and he had also left

Might want to look into that.

Paul, we need you in India. Some of the unreformed Kobra cultists have stolen a mutagen and I can't find them."

Ahh, time to deal with sone mutant snake men. A classic superhero story.

Heck, I was recently reading a Guarding the Globe comic where the Lizard League mutated a bunch of people.

**All human cultures have the smile. All gorillas show hostility by bearing teeth. All primates except humans do. But I hope that I can learn not to respond this way. It is… Tiring.**
It's actually more complex than that. Gorillas for example will show their teeth for a number of different reasons.

Common interpretations are:
  • Submission or appeasement: Lower-ranking gorillas may pull their lips back and show teeth to a dominant silverback to signal "I give up" or "I'm not a threat". This is often paired with leaning away, lowering the body, or avoiding eye contact.
  • Fear or anxiety: In unfamiliar situations, encounters with humans, or when feeling threatened, a gorilla may display a "fear grin" — bared teeth with a relaxed or wide-open mouth — to express unease.
  • Playfulness: In rough play, gorillas may show teeth in a loose, open-mouth "play face" where the jaw is relaxed and the display is brief.
  • Aggression or threat: If the gorilla is standing tall, staring directly, and showing both gums and teeth, it's likely a threat display. This can be accompanied by chest-beating, loud vocalizations, or even charging. In gorilla society, this is used to defend territory, family, or assert dominance.

You gotta pay attention to things like posture, eye contact, duration and body movement along with the teeth.

As for why humans smile, current theory is that smiling likely evolved from primate expressions of submission and harmlessness, transforming over millions of years into a tool for social cohesion and communication. Even infants develop social smiles by 6–8 weeks, which strengthen caregiver bonds and trigger dopamine release in parents, reinforcing emotional connections.

Huh. It's a strange thing to see a gorilla in armour. A lot of their anatomy doesn't lend itself to the sort of armour humans wear. The position of their shoulders in a standing or walking stance, for instance...

He doesn't look satisfied, but he looks less annoyed that he did when we started.

**It is acceptable. You are sure that the shield made by the belt is not sufficient?**

"It doesn't stop lasers or electrical discharges, and heat from plasma weapons leaks through."
And unless Nnamdi is preternaturally durable, he'll need that protection.

And most would still have issues of coverage due to the postural differences I mentioned. The chestplate would need enough clearance for the shoulders to move forwards, meaning it won't cover much of the pectorals in any other position.

**Then I will accept it.**

I nod. "Do you want to practise with the belt's flight function?"
Good, at least he isn't rejecting it out of hand (or foot) just because it's not perfectly suited to him...

He shifts awkwardly. **I do not think that gorillas are meant to fly.*

"No, but neither are humans. I understand if you're not eager, but it's something that could save your life. Even if you generally avoid using it, it would be a good idea to understand how to use it."
Besides, once you get aloft, you may change your tune. Or discover you're naturally acrophobic.

He thinks that over for a moment.

**You are correct. What do you suggest?**
See? If you never leave your comfort zone, you'll never learn or experience anything new.

"Well, when my team learned to use them, we set up hoops in the main training room and made a game of flying the circuit as quickly as we could. Rocket was far better than the rest of us, obviously, but it only took a few hours to get the hang of it."

**Then I suppose that I should make the effort.**
Doubt most of you ever reached her best scores, though. Lady has a knack for it.

We head out of the armoury and start down the corridor towards the training area.

"How are you finding living around humans?"
Ah, that's an interesting concern. He is going to have to work around humans, unless he plans to limit himself to being the guardian of Gorilla City alone.

**Difficult. I know that they do not mean to be hostile when they show their teeth or stare at me, but it is… Uncomfortable. I usually use telepathy to force myself to see that they have no aggressive thoughts.**

"Is that instinctual, or learned?"
Ah, body language differences. That would be a concern.

**All human cultures have the smile. All gorillas show hostility by bearing teeth. All primates except humans do. But I hope that I can learn not to respond this way. It is… Tiring.**

"How do the humans feel about you?"
I suspect habituation will eventually cause you to adapt. Enduring it is just part of growing.

**They do not see me. I maintain a telepathic illusion of being a human.**

I frown. "How does that work with security cameras?"

**It doesn't. I have been confronted by some very confused guards.**
Heh. Maybe using a holoprojector might be more efficient? It'd have to compensate for his posture, but in general...

Heh. A series relying on the old 'Gorilla pop' phenomenon. When having a monkey or ape on the cover of a comic would get people to buy it just to see what the heck it was about.

"Nnamdi, if a man gets hit by a car and suddenly turns into a gorilla, they're going to call animal control whatever he's got in his wallet."

**But there are humans who turn into other types of animal.**
And most of them turn back into humans when unconscious. Even in this world, someone knocked out cold turning into a gorilla isn't normal.

"Yes, but they're really rare. Most people will look at a gorilla and assume that the man they thought they hit wasn't hit, and that the gorilla is unrelated to him."

**I could wear a sign around my neck.**
...Maybe a medical alert necklace or bracelet or something? That way people examining you can see 'Yes, I am a gorilla, this is normal for me, do not worry.' and at least not panic.

"How annoying would that be?"

He itches his muzzle. **A t-shirt?**

"That sounds better. And who is Sam?"
Just the 'gorilla wearing human clothes' would give people pause, yes. And if you start to become famous enough to be recognised, people might not panic anyway.

I would hope his non-English name is something like 'Samsimyon' or the like, or else he's really trolling people.

"And he didn't want to go home?"

**Where we live now was never his home. His only surviving family was Grodd, and he had also left. And he had discovered a talent for art. That is not something he could do with our troupe.**
Huh, related to Grodd? Surprising. Though clearly nothing like him in temperament.

"Well, as long as he's happy. I-."

I step into the training room, and Risk is… Posing? In mid-air. He notices us a moment later and… Stops flexing.
I'd be looking for a mobile phone on a selfie timer. Risk seems the sort to self-promote like that.

"I thought you'd gone home?"

"Ah, no? Why the fuck would I do that?"
I mean, he is in an honest-to-god superhero base. That alone is pretty cool.

"School work? Rest?"

"Guidance councillor always said I needed to learn to apply myself." He floats down… Ah, he's gotten pretty good with that. "So I'm applying myself."
Quite an improvement over earlier. Looks like he's a quick learner.

Given he seems to have a powerset on par with a Danner Enhancile (if not necessarily as powerful,) I can see the logic. As long as he doesn't decide he should start wearing a cape. 😏

"You're welcome. That sort of thing is why we're doing this."

"So... What do I gotta do to get some of that sweet power armor?"
...Really? I mean, power armour is cool, but...

"Ah. Sorry, but at your level of strength and toughness, there isn't… Really any power armour I can build that would improve either. The Amazons might be able to build plat armour for you-."

"Nah. Regular armour's lame-ass."
Well, maybe stuff that looks like power armour but is just cosmetic? I'm sure OL could wire in a sound system to sound like creaking myomers or hydraulics for the auditory aesthetic.

"Not as lame-ass as getting shot, but… Your decision. I-."

My ring blinks.

"Sorry, I have to take this." I raise the ring to my face and step away. "Go."
Plus, Risk isn't super-durable. Making armour that could tank something capable of hurting him would be tricky, but something to take the edge of impacts so his power can handle it, that might work.

"So, what you gunna call yourself?"

Ghia'ta's face appears over my ring. "Paul, we need you in India. Some of the unreformed Kobra cultists have stolen a mutagen and I can't find them."
Ah, man. They're still playing silly buggers. I bet by the time they're found, they'll have turned themselves into snake-men...

**Nnamdi.**

"No, I mean your superhero name. What's it gunna be?"

"Sure, I'll be there in a minute."
That honestly is a good question. 'Na-Namdy' isn't exactly a name that strikes fear into the hearts of villainy. And you know most Americans will pronounce it like that.

**[Disinterested shrug]**

"Look, if you're fighting with me, you gotta have a cool name. Everyone else has got one… Even 'Hunter' kinda works."
I suspect he won't care much, as long as you don't call him a monkey.

I close the channel and turn to the new students. "Risk, if you don't need to rush home, would you mind helping Nnamdi learn how to use the belt?"

"Sure, no problem."

"Thank you. Right, I'll leave you to it. Back in a few minutes."
I only hope this doesn't end poorly. Nnamdi seems the sort to not rise to any challenges Risk might offer in the name of Bro-hood.

This program promises to produce some great moments of character interactions. Stuff like a cocky super-teen teaching a gorilla prince how to fly? That's got to be worth a few laughs from the culture clash for sure. And on actual hero business, it looks like former Kobra goons getting up to some new tricks... Hopefully OL can succeed where Ghiata was struggling.
