With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

As funny as this is, Paul is going to have to take care of that later. I really want to see what would happen to Thanagar if Paul ate the Seven Devils.

It ends with Paul admiring his complete set of Seven Devils action figures construct lanterns. Probably more useful than Shaligo and Pyron would've been.

I told my-. Former team mates. Friends, that when I played Tiberian Sun I liked to capture every building I could with engineers, and that I considered just levelling a base with artillery to be wasteful. And that's a good approach for policing. When you're policing, you want to take the person you're trying to arrest alive. You want everyone to see justice being done. And not every crime really warrants execution. And even when you're fighting someone who clearly does warrant execution, precision is the order of the day.

I've never really developed strategic attack patterns.
...Oh, he's mad. This should be interesting!

I grab him with a construct, form a crumbler ram around us and then fly upwards, the ceiling and the mountain above it decaying to nothing as we head for space by the shortest route.
Wowza. Paul is fully just fucking Viltrumiting this conflict.

Honestly? Very satisfying to see. Lovely work on this one, Zoat!

Queen Hyathis frowns in disgruntlement as Kromm and I descend towards her… I don't know what to call it, really. Ziggurat? I'm sure it's all part of her body, but it wasn't here last time-.

She's done the Swamp Thing thing of making a plant computer that's part of her brain. That… Could be a problem.

She stares at Kromm for a moment before returning her attention to me. "I was watching him. All of them. I don't know how they managed to get past me."

"You're all living cheek by jowl. They could all see how fast you were improving your fleet. Thanagar was the only place likely to offer them help. No idea how they found a Seven Devils cult, but it's-."

She frowns deeper. "What?"

"-not. What do you mean?"

"A Seven Devil cult? Those are real?"

"Are you asking me if the cults are real or if the Seven Devils are real?"

"Both."

"Yes. Both are real. Though the Seven Devils have been forced out of the material universe."

She snorts. "They run a police state and they can't even stop cults engaging in ritual sacrifice. Worthless, the lot of them."

"I'm ending the war."

"I'm ending the war. Mosteel's insurrection aside, I've got control of this system-."

"I can take it off you whenever I feel like."

"I think you overestimate yourself."

I raise my hands in front of me and generate the waveform Lantern Medphyll taught me. I can't see it due to the fact that I'm not a plant, but Hyathis looks mildly interested.

"I'm.. actually impressed that you know how to do that, but it's not strong enough to-"

Ophidian.

"-controlGAH!." She makes a frantic waving motion around her head as if trying to ward off an unusually aggressive fly. "Muyhegh!"

And I dismiss the construct.

"I don't like doing things like this. I like talking people down, helping them work together, finding a mutually beneficial way to coexist. I'm not immortal, and I don't want to be the single point of failure in galactic diplomacy." Something I didn't want anyway, but Lord Malvolio's situation underlined it. "And I don't want to live in a universe where it's only possible to get anywhere by threatening people. But sometimes I can't do that. Sometimes I have to swing my weight around. So okay, that's what I'm doing."

"Do you know how that feels?!"

"Yes, my friend Euanthe made me promise never to use it near Earth. But as to how things are being resolved here. The-."

"The Thanagarians get nothing."

"Obviously. You get Antares, and they recognise that. You give up all claims to worlds currently in the Thanagarian Empire. You do not send warships to the Thanagarian Empire. You do not send warships sort of near to the Thanagarian Empire."

"How about aiding their enemies? They are expansionist."

"Non-military supplies only."

"And what do I get out of giving up what they themselves promised me?"

"I personally guarantee the treaty. I already killed their admiral when he turned my offer down. I could destroy the fleet currently in your system-"

"So could I."

"-but they're currently checking up on what the High Mor wants them to do."

"What if a world in the Thanagarian Empire wants to be ruled by me?"

"Contact me. I will visit and arrange a plebiscite. You'll need a clear majority, and in the case of worlds with a non-thanagarian population they'll need to be involved as well."

"And this treaty will be effective from the moment it's signed?"

"Yes?" My eyes narrow. "Why?"

"You may have noticed that my thanagarian followers aren't here."

"They're attacking the Thanagarian Empire?"

"Something like that. Acquiring a new colony, since Alstair isn't ideal for them and I'm no longer limited to this system."

"As long as they're finished when you sign the treaty, that's fine."

"And the Thanagarians haven't signed up yet?"

"No."

"Do you expect me to call them off now, or-?"

"Yes."

"What if the Thanagarians don't sign?"

"Then you will be the least of their problems."

"Very well. I agree."

I narrow my eyes. "You're obviously up to something, but as long as no one dies after the treaty's signed I don't care."

"That suits me." She leans back in faux-calm repose. "What do you intend to do with Kromm?"

"Once the treaty is signed, a representative from both sides will assist me in conducting a full interrogation so that we all learn everything that he was up to. Then, I will execute him."

"And his co-conspirators?"

"Any in the Thanagarian Empire are their problem. Any in Antares are your problem. Any outside of both are my problem."

"Would you trust me to imprison him, or do you intend to carry him around with you?"

I deposit him next to her, and he doesn't resist as branches erupt from the structure and entangle him.

"If he's not in interrogable condition, then whatever scheme it is that you're not telling me about, I'll wreck it. "

She smiles confidently. "Oh, just trying to be helpful."

"Right. Pull your fleet back while I wait for the High Mor's response."

That should say 'Kromm and I'.

"You're all living cheek by jowl. They could all see how fast you were improving your fleet. Thanagar was the only place likely to offer them help. No idea how they found a Seven Devils cult, but it's-."

I'm surprised she wasn't aware they were real.

Yeah, I like that Hyathis just learned that despite her newfound strength she's still no match for Paul and now she definitively knows it.

"I personally guarantee the treaty. I already killed their admiral when he turned my offer down. I could destroy the fleet current in your system-"
That should say 'currently'.

Oh, that's not a good sign at all. She probably feels very intelligent right now, but it's just processing power, not understanding power. The problem will be if that sort of thing has gone to her head at all...

They probably got away with their prep because she wasn't looking at them right at that moment, either. She only has so much focus to go around, after all.

She frowns deeper. "What?"

"-not. What do you mean?"

"A Seven Devil cult? Those are real?"
...Really. You can believe in plant-based magic, but you don't believe the Thanagarians had god-like entities ruling them at some point? How... Arbitrary.

"Are you asking me if the cults are real or if the Seven Devils are real?"

"Both."
Obviously the cult would be real, the objects of heir belief notwithstanding. People always feel a need to believe in something, after all.

"Yes. Both are real. Though the Seven Devils have been forced out of the material universe."

She snorts. "They run a police state and they can't even stop cults engaging in ritual sacrifice. Worthless, the lot of them."
Because they've had their eyes on you, trying to respond to your actions, dummy.

"I'm ending the war."

"I'm ending the war. Mosteel's insurrection aside, I've got control of this system-."
Oh? For how long? Sooner or later, you'll have to look elsewhere...

"I can take it off you whenever I feel like."

"I think you overestimate yourself."
Oh, this is going to require a demonstration, isn't it?

I raise my hands in front of me and generate the waveform Lantern Medphyll taught me. I can't see it due to the fact that I'm not a plant, but Hyathis looks mildly interested.

"I'm.. actually impressed that you know how to do that, but it's not strong enough to-"
Not bad, not bad. Now to cut that haughty attitude out form under her.

Ophidian.

"-controlGAH!." She makes a frantic waving motion around her head as if trying to ward off an unusually aggressive fly. "Muyhegh!"

And I dismiss the construct.
Now do you understand the gap in power between you and OL?

"I don't like doing things like this. I like talking people down, helping them work together, finding a mutually beneficial way to coexist. I'm not immortal, and I don't want to be the single point of failure in galactic diplomacy." Something I didn't want anyway, but Lord Malvolio's situation underlined it. "And I don't want to live in a universe where it's only possible to get anywhere by threatening people. But sometimes I can't do that. Sometimes I have to swing my weight around. So okay, that's what I'm doing."
Sometimes, you just have to punch the unrighteous in the face.

"Do you know how that feels?!"

"Yes, my friend Euanthe made me promise never to use it near Earth. But as to how things are being resolved here. The-."
Something like someone sticking something icky into her soul, I suppsoe?

"The Thanagarians get nothing."

"Obviously. You get Antares, and they recognise that. You give up all claims to worlds currently in the Thanagarian Empire. You do not send warships to the Thanagarian Empire. You do not send warships sort of near to the Thanagarian Empire."
And I expect even diplomatic or trading vessels will be hesitant to cross the border, hmm?

"How about aiding their enemies? They are expansionist."

"Non-military supplies only."
And don't yell too much if the Thanagarians destroy said supply ships? That's bound to happen...

"And what do I get out of giving up what they themselves promised me?"

"I personally guarantee the treaty. I already killed their admiral when he turned my offer down. I could destroy the fleet currently in your system-"
Not that he would given how he'd like to avoid any further deaths.

"So could I."

"-but they're currently checking up on what the High Mor wants them to do."
I get the feeling that his response will be 'withdraw carefully and in good order'.

"What if a world in the Thanagarian Empire wants to be ruled by me?"

"Contact me. I will visit and arrange a plebiscite. You'll need a clear majority, and in the case of worlds with a non-thanagarian population they'll need to be involved as well."
Which probably means a few planets on the near border might flip.

"And this treaty will be effective from the moment it's signed?"

"Yes?" My eyes narrow. "Why?"
Oh, she's got something going on as well, hasn't she?

"You may have noticed that my thanagarian followers aren't here."

"They're attacking the Thanagarian Empire?"

"Something like that. Acquiring a new colony, since Alstair isn't ideal for them and I'm no longer limited to this system."
Better hope they're quick about it, then...

"As long as they're finished when you sign the treaty, that's fine."

"And the Thanagarians haven't signed up yet?"

"No."
Which gives her people a firm time limit, and a quite short one, at that.

"Do you expect me to call them off now, or-?"

"Yes."
Don't ask what he'll do if they don't do as they're told.

"What if the Thanagarians don't sign?"

"Then you will be the least of their problems."
I like the subtle implications he's giving. And she might well come to similar but inaccurate conclusions from them.

"Very well. I agree."

I narrow my eyes. "You're obviously up to something, but as long as no one dies after the treaty's signed I don't care."
Otherwise, OL will have to come back here and make some changes in leadership.

"That suits me." She leans back in faux-calm repose. "What do you intend to do with Kromm?"

"Once the treaty is signed, a representative from both sides will assist me in conducting a full interrogation so that we all learn everything that he was up to. Then, I will execute him."
To avoid any party having lingering feelings about his passing, I suppose.

"And his co-conspirators?"

"Any in the Thanagarian Empire are their problem. Any in Antares are your problem. Any outside of both are my problem."
And in his case, they won't be a problem for long.

"Would you trust me to imprison him, or do you intend to carry him around with you?"

I deposit him next to her, and he doesn't resist as branches erupt from the structure and entangle him.
Admittedly, wood probably can't do much to his metal.

"If he's not in interrogable condition, then whatever scheme it is that you're not telling me about, I'll wreck it. "

She smiles confidently. "Oh, just trying to be helpful."

"Right. Pull your fleet back while I wait for the High Mor's response."
Oh, she's going to be troublesome, isn't she?

Hopefully the High Mor and his staff will be reasonable about this too. Or Thanagar may find itself in need of a new High Command. I just know Hyathis is going to make trouble down the line somehow. She thinks she's far more clever than she actually is, and it is going to bite her in the ass at some point, possibly by Best Snek...

Well, maybe not quite, but you're a damn sight closer than most people. I must admit it's a good attitude to have, though.
"The Thanagarians get nothing."
It's funny to see how a species having the same name as their polity and homeworld can get annoying. Here we see someone using the same word over the course of a conversation to separately refer to members of the Thanagarian Empire and to members of the thanagarian species. Probably not a problem for Oh El though; even if he couldn't tell from context, I imagine the rings will clarify what it means in any specific instance.

Man, now I feel bad for the admiral who was made an example of; he seemed like he was trying to be reasonable.

"My son, the planet, or me?"

She snorts. "They run a police state and they can't even stop cults engaging in ritual sacrifice. Worthless, the lot of them."

She's out of line but she's not wrong.

My theory is that the problem is that the Thanagarians don't have an alternative religious tradition. If you're spiritually inclined and desperate to entrust yourself to a higher power, it's the Seven Devils or nothing. That's why the cults keep coming back.

Vulcan could maybe solve more than one problem…

"Something like that. Acquiring a new colony, since Alstair isn't ideal for them and I'm no longer limited to this system."

It's Bleez's homeworld isn't it? And she's going to get the native population to ratify it by promising better treatment so OL won't just reverse it under the no shenanigans rule.

EDIT: I can even provide a justification for why that Old Colony out of all of them. We know Bleez's father worked with Hyanthis to convince her to cure the Plague, so she would logically be familiar with his world.
