What if there a physical/spiritual law that makes it impossible to create weapons more advanced than medieval ones.

Basically all technology still exist, with exception of weapons more advanced than the catapult, no guns, no rockets (offensive ones), and any time you tried to use some new technology for war, even in a roundabout way, the technology stops working before you can try, you can't even transport your army using planes or cars etc....

How would that effect history?, what would stay the same and what would change?

Considering that "no military applications at all" also covers communications, command structures would have to be much less remote. The people in charge of a front would have much greater response lag unles reasonably close, rather than just commanding from the homeland. Might slow down expansion, and reasserts a strong disadvantage to an invading force.

Castles might still be a thing, considering without the massive damage of cannons they'd still be viable.

Yep, adding to that, you can't use modern technology to build medieval weapons (the technology refuses to work) nor build the ancient tools to make weapons using new technology, armies would take a more defensive job, due to the rising world population and the long time it takes to make weapons.

Unless you are from a random tribe with no lands, diplomacy and respect (grudging or not) would be given to your country considering almost every civilization knows how to make weapons.

Africa might take Europe place as the most rich content even.

I mean there have been found examples of primitive firearms int eh 12-13th century let alone cannons.
So it's not a complete overhaul. But I'm putting money on at least 1 coup starting from a renaissance fair

I did specify :

wouldn't this be like naruto then? just ninjas killing each other while a family drives by in a miata on the way to the zoo?

I bet lots more investigation towards magic/spirituality would be invested in, as a supernatural element would be confirmed as 'guiding' development of hard sciences.

Probably lead to consecrated or cursed weaponry to bash other people's faces in with.

Oh interesting, so countries like Egypt or Iraq could be the new world superpowers due to their rich history with magic, but would the guiding force let them do that though?

What do you think?
My bad
Still stand on the renaissance thing though.
The amount of people ninja running to their deaths will certainly also have an increase
Where would the rebellion be?, Europe , America, Africa, Asia?

And ninja did exist even in our timeline, so i don't think they will change much here.

As I doubt whatever guiding forces gives that much of a damn for micromanagement, wouldn't shock me if it this world turned out similar to how western fantasy worlds based on Dungeons and Dragons would develop.

So you think pagan gods worship might return like in D&D ,heralding the return of wizards, shamans, and clerics?

It'd depend on what this supernatural force enforcing this rule actually is.

And if it happened to a world without it previously, or if it was present from the beginning.

Each path lead to a different conclusion.
