I mean I'm probably not going to read that passage out loud in the middle of downtown Atlanta, but otherwise I would read it like I'd read anything else. I'm assuming you're referring to that word being used in a casual or friendly way, and not calling somebody one as an insult, right? The Venn diagram of dudes who use that word casually and frequently irl and dudes who can write Black characters saying it in a manner that's convincing and doesn't feel forced is pretty small, so I'd give a story a shot just to see if they pull it off or if they end up sounding like a ginormous cornball.

If it's character dialog, it's fine.

If it's internal thoughts of a character being narrated, it's not a problem.

If it's lyrics, it might get a pass.


If it's one poster saying something about another poster, I'm going to read it in a more critical way.

As a white person, I can say hearing or seeing the word in any of it's variations usually makes me pause, because if nothing else it is a word so loaded with cultural context that I want to know the context before reacting or moving on. "evildice" two posts above this one mostly addressed how that goes in written form. Hearing it spoken is chancier.

If you have ever heard of "White Fragility", it is a notion related to how said white people, mostly but not entirely in the USA, are sometimes so afraid of being or seeming racist (whether they actually are or not) they bend themselves into humiliating social contortions to avoid it. I don't know how prevalent it is, but it is definitely a real thing.
 
One of my favorite bits on the subject was when Tina Fey won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2010, and in her acceptance speech made the comment:

"And yet I hope that like Mark Twain, a hundred years from now people will see my work, and think 'Wow, that is actually pretty racist'."

Um, yeah. But the problem is, it's pretty hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it. Even having experienced true love I would have trouble explaining it to someone who hadn't. And I'm coming up on my 20th wedding anniversary in November.

Anyone know why Meat Canyon is... kinda awful whenever elderly people come up? I was watching some of his irl stuff and it was just... like it went too far imo. It wasn't even the person he was talking about did wrong. She was the victim of an H.O.A. but he was just... cruel when talking about her.

All people have biases. Some people might in fact wind up with biases that are terrible. But all of it is matter of degree.

You know... the way we met was a mistake. All it took too meet her was a single glance too long into her sterile hospital room and a question from her: "Are you from the program?"

A disgusting habit I had when I was younger and more destructive made me wander in, lying: "Yes, I am."

At the end of it -- she asked me to come back. And I did, for some damn reason. And at some point on that road, I heard "I love you."

Now for someone like me? Who's birth was an accident between two fourteen year olds, who was tossed between foster families and treated as expendable labor and nothing else? I can safely say meeting her, falling in love with her, was worth every damn trauma I endured. Now for a slice of advice: treasure every second together. And by God, do everything in your power to resolve any health issues you might have lest it turn into a dragon you can't defeat.

I would know, because I still visit and clean her grave every Sunday.
 
Anyone else here have what I like to call an "Editing Rule", when it comes to forum posts?

For me, it is that, once I saw someone quoted my post, I usually don't edit it anymore, unless I have to correct myself after getting something wrong, in which case I add that, but beyond that I leave them as-is. Mostly to avoid confusion.

Does anyone else do something similar, or is that just me being weird?
 
nah, my posts are non-fungible, ephemeral, living art pieces that changes with my opinions.
