    Hello Guys!

I don't know if any of you will read this but...

I like to make a suggestion about making a rule that is similar to the one found on Reddit, requiring members to post the source of every image that they post in the site and give proper credit to the artist or creator of said images.

Dead and Deleted sources can just be referred as "dead" and "deleted" respectively while untraceable ones can just be "???".

The reason for this is some people want to find out where the images came from and who created said images.

Some images are tricky to find and a reverse image search isn't always going to to give the precise result. The vast amount of results coming from Pinterest isn't helping the situation.

Artist / Creators worked hard on creating the stuff that people like to post here. The best thng they can do is credit them by linking to the original sources like Pixiv, Twitter, and Reddit!'

As someone of a creator myself, it feels kinda sad that people will just post your work without even bothering to put your name on it or posting the site page where you originally uploaded it from. I've seen many original works made by users from sites like Reddit that get uploaded here without any proper credit to the artist!

I've seen lots of cases like these especially in image and discussion threads to the point that sometimes I'll even work my way to post the sources just in case anyone is curious where an image came from or post who the artist is.

    Yes.

I know that there are some users here who already do the stuff that I am suggesting in this post but I think it will be really nice if everyone will do it.

    So...

Is this too much of a rule to be created and enforced?

Are there going to be issues and complications?

    Is it too draconian perhaps?

I will really like to know what you guys think!

    :D

I'd rather not. As you say, a lot of people are pulling from pintrest or other aggregation sites. They won't have source. At least danbooru, r34, sankaku, and some of the other sites link back to the sites.

It'd be a courtesy to source it, but even on pixiv, several artists tend to purge their old artwork every few years (Blade is an example). (The best source for some of the older Blade artwork is the sad panda.)

It'd be nice to have a mod sticky on each page or by the posting box that says source appreciated, but requiring it seems like a bad idea.

    I already addressed this one.

People can just mark the source as "dead" or "deleted".

    And why is that?

Too much work trying to track down the proper source?

Basically yes. If someone is posting some random pic that they found on gelbooru, and as a result they have zero way of knowing what the actual source is, requiring them to go and spend upwards of 30 minutes tracking it down is completely unreasonable. Especially with how generally shit that reverse image search is at anything that isn't "Finding the same pic where it's been reposted on some other image aggregation site, but in a slightly different resolution".

Mate, sites like that usually have a link leading to the source.

What's wrong with copying the address and including it to the image.

I think some people are just being lazy...

Firstly, many of them do, but by no means all of them do. Secondly, I have a directory containing thousands of pictures that I've downloaded, and if I intend to share a picture, I would usually copy it from that. I couldn't tell you the source of every image in that folder, and finding the source for any of them would be a pain.

The effect of enforcing such a rule would be that far fewer pictures would get posted. Because most people don't know the source and certainly aren't going to spend any real amount of effort finding it.

You'll note that I very specifically mentioned Gelbooru, which very specifically does not do that, and is by no means the only such site that doesn't link to the sources either. Secondly, so what if it's being lazy? There is absolutely zero reason why someone who is just reposting should be obliged to go waste time looking for the source when the tools to do so are at best about as stable as a Ford Pinto covered in Nitroglycerine, and at worst are completely nonexistent.

    Just found this.

Pretty sure it may not help my case much but it shows one of the consequences of not crediting artists properly for their work.

    source: https://old.reddit.com/r/TheLastAir...ease_always_consider_the_artist_when_sharing/

I guess I'm one of the few outliers here then huh?

I mean, sure some artwork sources are indeed tricky to find without meticulous searching but what about stuff that have sources are easy to find?

Like for example, in the Nasuverse Images Thread, if you look at By the Horns' posts you can see their images came from many of the Fate subreddits from Reddit!

Some of them are even original creations from the users there and yet they got no credit or at least a link to the source of their work!

For me, it's frustrating, jarring, and annoying at the same time!

What's the point of posting your hard work when people are not even going to recognize you for it!?

Are you suggesting the mods spend their time verifying the artist is correct? Because that's what you're asking for any time someone labels a picture as 'dead'. If this rule was enacted, realistically that is what would often happen.

If you are so concerned with citing artists correctly, then you are free to do it yourself.

I also asked you guys to post ideas, changes, and suggestions to make the rule workable in the site you know.

    This.

I wonder many artists will feel after reading what you wrote...

If it weren't for them, you wouldn't even have any images to post in this site in the first place!

I'm not saying people shouldn't credit the artist. I'm just saying that it's completely unrealistic to impose it as a rule, because a significant proportion of images shared won't have a known artist at all. And trying to police that would be completely unreasonable.

Also, that link goes way beyond just not crediting. Actively cropping out the signature? Yeah, that's pretty mean.

I can understand the frustration, but this is not primarily an art-sharing site. People share pictures for a variety of reasons and taken from a variety of sources, often including their own hard drive. Expecting them to actually provide sources for every item of artwork posted is completely unreasonable, because I sure as hell could not easily find the source for an image that I downloaded two years ago, and giving people exceptions for artwork they can't easily find sources for makes the whole thing pointless. The effect of such a rule would either be to make no difference or to basically reduce the number of images posted on this site by about 90%.

There aren't any. It's not workable, full stop. Either it's so weak as to be meaningless, or it's way too inconvenient for most people to bother posting the art in the first place.

Frankly, I don't think a possibility of hurt artist feelings necessitates an enforced rule and the associated reduction in image posting. I think the artist you cite is overreacting, in all honesty, to what's basically a breach of etiquette.

Yes, it's good etiquette to provide image sources, if known. No, enforcing that etiquette is not a good idea (for starters, it's not always known).

I can honestly understand the artist's reaction, because the guy not only didn't provide the source, they actually cropped out the signature. But that's very different from someone not wanting to waste hours looking for the source to a picture they just found amongst thousands of pictures stored in a folder in their hard drive, or on a site where the source is simply not given.

Said Artist got his signature in the image removed in the post.

And it's overreacting if someone doesn't credit you for your work now!?

Then why do people still do not provide one if the source is known and obvious then?

Hard to believe all of those images were found in some backwater website where the sources are untraceable!

Is there some reason you're yelling and scowling at me based off a context-elided quote and the mild rudeness of other people?

You started this thread reasonably calm and willing to accept disagreement, but you seem to have gotten immensely and irrationally angry at everyone in your last few posts.

Right, and the original guy that cropped out the source is an ass.

Everyone else, who simply reposted the edited version after it got popular are completely blameless however, since they had no way of knowing what the actual source was.

Let's not pretend that Imgur or other sites like it is particularly backwater. And yet, since that's the site I get the *vast* majority of my random meme image laughs from, if that's where I first see something, I'm not going to know what the source is.

I propose that we not destroy ourselves in the ways that SV has already shown to be a bad idea. It's nice to learn from the mistakes of others instead of making them ourselves. As a more porn-oriented site, anything that results in a chilling effect on images will be especially cancerous. I'm sorry your pictures got stolen and claimed by someone else. Take it out on the thief, not on us. And if we see anyone here falsely claiming to be the artist of what they post, we'll slap them too. Deal?
