I look around at the cliff sides surrounding me and spot the small tunnel entrances that show that this is ant territory. That might explain why the banshees are hanging back. I didn't think they were intelligent enough for something like that, but… Maybe?

And of course it can't smell the banshees at all from down here, but it's probably continuing to emit that warning pheromone as long as it chases me. So while I could telepathically muffle its senses, I don't. I let it keep-.

I jink left and slow, turning and heading towards the opposite canyon wall. A small chance that the banshees will use this opportunity to dive, but I think I've got time and I… Yes, there it is. I grab a small device that was dropped near the canyon wall before turning back to my original course and accelerating again. The ant isn't quite as agile as me and has to actually stop to change direction. So I haven't lost my lead but…
What is this?
It looks a little like a speaker, and there's a radio receiver built into it. Did Doki plant these so that she could communicate with the contestants? I… Think I can… Hear some sort of… Quiet noise? Static? Getting any kind of signal in a canyon isn't easy, as even long wave would struggle to get down here. Don't know. I put it in one of my robe's pockets of later analysis.
And I turn the corner-
Buried ant! Dodge!
-and I see the unfinished section of pre-War road leading to a porous pile of rubble which forms the shape of an amphitheatre. And this time I use my telekinetic sense to feel-. Ants. Lots of them. But that passage over there feels more like a complete utility tunnel of the sort I've seen in dozens of pre-War subterranean structures.
And the entrance…

**Right.** I feel more ants buried in the ground nearby, and the ones in the rocks are preparing to attack as they smell the danger pheromone on me. So I slow to a halt, turn and aim my pistol at the flock just above the canyon rim. **Drawing the banshees in now.**
I fire and miss, the range being too long for the relatively slow bolt of plasma to be at all accurate. I fire and miss again, but they're getting the idea that I'm an actual threat they need to deal with rather than something they can wait to die of dehydration. About half swoop into the canyon in my direction while the rest begin flapping to get over my head.
**My control of these ants isn't precise. If they decide to go-.**
**Understood. Apropos of nothing, would you like ant control psychic powers?**
**Uh, what? You mean-. You can control ants? If you can-? Why am I here?**
**Specialisation. I can talk to you and do other things but I'm not good at controlling animals.**

Here we go! Banshees flying along the canyon are approaching slowly in order to use their screech, while two of those above me are tucking their wings in to swoop! I start running towards the centre of the amphitheatre, firing half-aimed shots at the banshees above me. An ant unburies itself to my right and another sticks its head out through a hole, but I dash past them in a blur before their acid sprays can hit me.
"kEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYAH!"
The ants behind me shudder, turning their attention to-. The low-flying flock has increased their speed, and I can feel the increased aggression from them. Not sure what's doing that-.
**The ants are going crazy! Whatever you're doing-**
I reach into my robes, trigger my Stealth Boy and dash over to a nearby overhang.
**-you better-.**
Banshees jostle for position, sonic energy able to detect me perfectly well. The ants on the other hand…
**Let them attack.**
And then the carnage begins.

Now, if Tanya can get to Krono and toss some of that 'friendly' goo on him to make the ants not come after him, this might be in sight of a safe conclusion. And then go and give Doki a good talking to about appropriate levels of challenge for contestants. Which may be as futile as beating his head against a wall.

Fair enough and understandable. I didn't know that for sure and mostly was just trying to understand the "200 years too early for VATS comment," and just ending up more confused for my efforts in checking the dates

Besides all the ghoul mechanics stuff at minimum.
I don't know enough fallout lore at "fine detail" levels to pick out other discrepancies without going looking specifically, but at the very least the series does change things up with how ghouls work quite a bit, to be fair.

I'm not sure what you mean, the Ghoul mechanics are spot on.
The closest thing to a difference is that they created something that can keep a Ghoul who has begun to turn feral from doing so. But it's never been said that something like that doesn't exist, so it's still lore compliant.
Unless you're talking about the Snake Oil Salesmen and the Ghoul Serum? But mutation serums are from Fallout 76. (And of course Hancock from Fallout 4.)

Yeah the only lore issue I'm aware of with the TV series was Shady Sands getting nuked before New Vegas on the timeline, but it turns out that was a miscommunication and "the fall of Shady Sands" was referencing a plague and Shady Sands going into decline, with the nuke happening after New Vegas, which makes it canon compliant.

As long as you ignore the fact that the Vault the person who did the nuking came from 1) had its entrance in the open and 2) was right next to the Master's centre of operations during a period where the Master was desperately looking for Prime Normals. For that to be canon we have to assume that the Master and his entire army were really bad at finding things.
Oh, and we have to accept that the NCR would collapse if Shady Sands got nuked, and that Shady Sands magically moved towards the coast, and that Shady Sands was a pre-War city, which it wasn't.

Mariposa is a fair hike away from Santa Monica, so no it wasn't right next to the Master's center of operations. It was quite close to Lost Hills though, the Brotherhood HQ for Fallout 1. It is not implausible that the Master was aware of Vault 33 and was simply unable to break into it due to the nearby Brotherhood presence. Breaking into a Vault is not easy after all; the only times I think it has happened was when the Vault door was faulty or when you use a pre-war mining robot in Fallout 76.
The NCR was already on the brink of collapse in New Vegas, if they didn't secure Hoover Dam (which it looks like they did not, given the state New Vegas is in) and Shady Sands was then nuked I can absolutely believe that would cause the whole thing to fall over in a chain reaction of people stabbing each other in the back and trying to take advantage of the situation.
Fallout 1 and 2 are often inaccurate with their city placements: Bakersfield (the Necropolis) is much too far east, and neither Klamath nor Reno are even close to their real locations. The devs clearly moved things around for gameplay purposes. (I think I remember something about everything being moved east to make stuff fit on the map better.)
Whether this counts as a retcon or not depends on whether you think that things being in the wrong locations in Fallout 1\2 are just gameplay abstractions or whether it was intended to mean that various settlements, such as Bakersfield, were placed in different spots in the Fallout-verse.
(Also Shady Sands moves around in between Fallout 1 and 2 anyway, so it moving is nothing new.)

Yeah I meant the ghoul sanity drugs and the fact that they regenerate super fast.
I don't really object to the fact a sanity drug exists in general, as that does seem like something that could exist, and as you say, nothing ever said it didn't. Just to the fact that it's pretty explicitly stated that it's a hard requirement for ghouls to have in order not to go feral (and pretty quickly too, like a matter of weeks at most, since they count doses as a daily thing (2 month supply is 60 doses) and The Ghoul starts to shut down within days of running out of them).
Although I suppose it's possible the really fast regeneration after the arrow to the neck was also "not normal" and only due to the serum, and just Maximus didn't know better, being the not-very-intelligent-or-educated person he is.

Spoiler for Fallout: the Master is not in Mariposa. He's in the Los Angeles Vault. Lou Tenant is the head of Mariposa during Fallout.
Regardless of the Brotherhood presence, the Master's Army will still find the much more remote Vault 13 if you take too long. If anything, the fact that the Brotherhood weren't knocking on the Vault door for that lovely pre-War technology makes it even stranger.
The NCR wasn't on the verge of collapse. The Mojave Expedition was, but that's it. Listen to the endings and see how many of them mention the NCR collapsing.

I don't remember anything indicating Vaults 31, 32, or 33 had their entrances opened at any point prior to 2280, more than a century after the Master died.

Edit:Edit: Just because the Vault door is in the open in 2296, doesn't mean it was in the open in 2162. The Vault 33 entrance, when we see it, was clearly in the basement of a large structure, and while I'm not an expert in forensics, the various corpses around the entrance have clearly not been exposed to the elements for 200 years. One likely scenario is that in the recent past, someone tried to blast their way into Vault 33 and failed, leaving the door exposed. Additionally, the vault remaining hidden is easily explainable as Vault 31 or their assets running interference with the Master's searches.
They describe the day as the day the bombs dropped, not the day the bomb dropped. Depending on what happened at Vegas, whether or not other settlements were nuked, and what the Brotherhood did in the aftermath, that's not too much of a stretch.
Yeah, apparently Shady Sands (or some outlying NCR community) was close enough to the coast to siphon off Vault 33's water supply, and within a 3-day walk of the coast.
I don't remember this being established. I thought the whole point was that, in the 35 years after fallout 2, Shady Sands built itself up until it was on the level of a pre-war city, and then got nuked again because War Never Changes. Is there a pre-war scene set in Shady Sands? Or did someone analyze the skyline and match it to L.A.?
Though I suppose the existence of the pre-war Hawthorne Medical Facility within a few hours walk of the city is suspicious.
To be fair, Ghoulification is a function of radiation, and the show gives a solid reason why the area of the show should have much higher radiation than most of the places we see in fallout.
And for the arrow, you can chalk that up to something else in the cocktail rather than just the ghoulification itself.

Hm... I assume you mean the recent nuking of shady sands?
I sort of see that as reasonable... But it leaves the question of how anywhere else could have prewar ghouls still not feral, especially since they would be very unlikely to have had access to this mystery ghoul sanity drug in the original post-war period when radiation levels were way higher still?

Irrelevant. The super mutants found Vault 13. Vault 13 was further away and at least as well hidden. They will find it even if given no information that it even exists.

Vault 33's door is directly exposed to the elements. The exterior is heavily weathered but there are no signs of explosives having been used on the door. The surrounding structures are heavily damaged, but all the damage looks old. That's important, because it's prime scavenging territory for the nearby city, where for several decades the Children of the Citadel was a major religion.
So the guy who fired the missiles knew the location of each of the NCR's major cities? How? I mean, the very idea that he had that many functioning ICBM's is ridiculous to start with, but he had no way to get that information.
And do we even know what chapter the Brotherhood in the series is supposed to be? Lost Hills lost a war to the NCR and was pushed back into their bunkers. I very much doubt that they could build an airship like that. Mojave Chapter wouldn't have the resources either, and the next closest canonical chapter is... Texas? Who would, but would have a very different accent and wouldn't have much reason to cross the entirety of Arizona.
That's actually fine. The Boneyard is right there, where the series put Shady Sands. It even looks like the series version of Shady Sands, and is a major NCR city. Them digging down for clean water makes perfect sense.
Series Shady Sands has the skeletons of pre-War skyscrapers towering above the modern buildings. Actual Shady Sands doesn't have that, because the Vault 15 survivors picked somewhere that hadn't been nuked to set up their farms. If there are any pre-War buildings, then it isn't Shady Sands.

Presumably, better access to RadX and Radaway, non-Vault shelters, canned food, and not-having tons of sketchy toilet drugs injected in them protected against radation and ghoulification for an extended and variable period of time for different people in different places, with those countermeasures slowly failing over time as salvage, stockpiles, and infrastructure broke down. Ghoulification happened at different rates in different places, the earliest ghouls were most likely to go feral, and drugs to suppress the SAN loss were developed over decades in response, soon enough to be usable by some ghouls but too late for others.
I will say that I'm not sure what, exactly, is up with the Pompeii-style plaster corpses in front of the door. Though there's "decades old" and there's "centuries old." And the nonsensical durability of Fallout materials is a meme of its own.
No all, just enough to cause a breakdown of control that allowed other factions in the region or nearby regions to capitalize, or for factions within the NCR to come into conflict over how to save the day after the bombs fell. Big cities aren't exactly hidden.
The airship is the Prydwen. Apparently, the East Coast brotherhood won in the Commonwealth, consolidated power, and have spent the decade since then reinforcing the western chapters, likely the Mojave Chapter.
Just re-watched the flashback scenes with Moldaver and Rose. You're right, the skyscrapers were ruined when the city wasn't, which means that they're pre-war, and Shady Sands either moved, or was retconned.

Roger: Twenty-eight years since I first started showing.
According to the show, Roger was a pre-war ghoul who first started turning Feral 28 years ago, and that's presumably when he started taking the medication.
Ghoul's regenerating is normal, remember this Ghoul factiod from Fallout 3?
"Ghouls, both 'normal' and Feral, are not only immune to radiation... they're healed by it."
And Thaddus directly stated the area the Radio tower was in was radioactive.
The environmental story we were shown for why Vault 33 was left alone, was that the Vault entrance was protected by Assaultrons until such a point as they broke down, which was presumably enough time for the entire area to be declared a general "don't go here or you will die" zone.
Murdered by Assaultron death beam would be my guess given the inactive one Lucy walks by on her way out.

I remember thinking at the time that he was saying 28 years since he became a ghoul, and that he wasn't one of the rare pre-war ones, and the point is that he made it that long without going feral, but now he's finally turning due to having run out of the special ghoul drug
Yeah I remember that. I guess it just never seemed like it was supposed to mean a super healing like wolverine's. I always thought it was supposed to be a slower process, more like accelerated natural healing, but that still should take hours.
After all, none of the ghoul enemies in highly irritated areas have rapidly regenerating health bars as you fight them?
I get that there's a conceptual precedent though, so I won't say I'm arguing that this is strictly a departure from canon anymore

I mean like I said; it's entirely possible they did find Vault 33 (it's not like it's hidden) but were unable to get in for whatever reason (Assaultron guards is the implication I think), wouldn't be the first time.
None of the endings mention much of anything regarding the NCR outside of the Mojave or beyond the immediate future.
We know that the NCR needed the power from Hoover Dam because this is mentioned multiple times throughout the game, Cassandra says "It's of immense strategic value to the NCR. Hoover Dam sends enough electricity west to light every city and major settlement." for example.
So if the NCR lost control over the dam, they would have suffered from a massive power shortage which would have led to all kinds of unrest and destabilization. Combine that with the capitol getting nuked a short while later and it is not at all implausible that the entire system would break down.
AFAIK enemy ghouls are not actually affected by radiation in any way, despite radiation canonically healing them and multiple examples of such for the player and certain enemies: Glowing Ones have the ability to release a burst of radiation that heals and resurrects nearby dead ghouls for example.
I assume this is a gameplay limitation, possibly having enemies regenerate HP from ambient radiation was unfun, so the mechanic was restricted to special abilities.

The first casualty is a banshee. Swooping towards my location it flies past an ant while screaming, which is apparently enough to trigger an attack response. The ant's head jerks around, a cloud of caustic mist spraying from its mouth and hitting the banshee in the right side of its face. I see its right eye whiten and then dissolve as the fur around it bleaches and melts, and I don't know if it's the pain which makes it slam into the ground or the brain damage.
"kEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYAH!"
The second casualty is that ant, as one of the swooping banshees registers it as a threat. The banshee slams into the side of its thorax with its mouth open, bowling it over and biting through the chitin. The ant manages to get a spray off and envelopes them both in green-white clouds, and I'm assuming that's the signal for the rest of the ants as-

It's just a savage itch at the moment and my F.E.V. enhanced constitution should prevent it getting much worse, but-.
Okay, get-. Cord out, wrap it around my sleeves to reduce exposure. I can already see the surface of my robes start to mottle, but as long as I don't get anything sprayed on me directly that should be all that happens. Neck… Bandages. Tie them around-. Ah, it just makes the itching worse. Ah. Water! Grab the canteen, splash it around my neck to dilute the chemical agent, and…
And the banshees are still attacking me, and can probably still use their echolocation even through this… If they're not being too badly burned to concentrate on it. But since as.. far as I can tell I'm a target of opportunity rather than someone they've got a particular grudge against -I mean, I'm not attacking their young or in their core territory or anything- they've got no reason to attack me rather than the ants trying to melt them. Honestly, they should be backing off-.

Step forwards and punch the snout, knocking it back because they're much more dangerous on the attack than the defence.

Sidestep the blood because while I probably can't be affected by F.E.V. again I don't want to risk it and telekinetically shove the dying banshee away from me back into the… Acid fog which looks a lot denser now.

The slope is too vertical to run up so I take a couple of leaps to dimly visible ledges before switching to a more conventional rock climbing posture. No crampons, but I have the advantage of telekinetic force to hold myself in position and more than human strength to pull myself up.
Gradually, literally painfully gradually, the mist falls behind and the air clears. The burning doesn't really stop, but it stops getting worse and once I can find a ledge or something I can use what's left of my water to wash my eyes out.
**Okay, I'm out of the line of fire. Mostly.** I 'reach' up telepathically, but I can't feel any more banshees. I suppose they've left, if they haven't all joined the melee below me. **How are the ants?**
**They're going back inside the burrow. Their acid spray probably breaks down the pheromone, so when they've covered an area they don't see a need to keep attacking.**
**Okay. I'm heading to the top of the canyon. Do you think they have an exit up there?**

I was thinking of the promotional material that called it the Caswennan. Given how the Prydwen also ended up in Fallout 76 I'm not sure I believe that the change was deliberate.
I didn't see any assultrons in that clip, or during the invasion by cannibal communist raiders.
You are mistaken. The slides relating to Hanlon for example make explicit reference to NCR politics.
Even if we take what she says at face value, the NCR only occupied the damn in 2274. Before that, they didn't have that electricity. The NCR started in 2189.
