The "in person" bit makes me wonder if they won't touch on the thread to do with any ongoing issues with Bruce's relationship with fear after Paul's experience with integrating himself with his desires after his first orange merger. The fact that Paul was the one who exposed him to Smilex enhanced fear toxin might not make this as smooth as it could be otherwise, both from Paul's side as he was unhappy about the choice, and from Bruce's as he expressly didn't agree to it IIRC. Even after the ring based tune up afterwards, I'd be surprised if this didn't continue to have an effect on their mutual trust, among other things, even though they can still work with each other.
It has me wondering if Batman is thinking of creating the Brother Eye system, as Bruce losing his trust in fellow heroes is what caused him to create it in the comics.

The main issue with telling a teenager that something they really want to do is a bad idea is that even if you explain it very clearly, they might not listen or believe you (which is why I think that even if Paul had been a lot more clear with Zatanna than he was, the plot that followed could still have happened in a similar fashion). Likewise, emotions are not logical, and don't just stop even if you consciously decide not to act on them.
