And even if the Lanterns didn't get paid, the Guardians offer free lodging, food and shelter to all Green Lanterns who choose to live on Oa in basically every continuity, so even in the universes where Lanterns don't have a salary (that we know of), they can still choose to move to Oa permanently where all of their living expenses are basically taken care of in exchange for their service. Say what you will about the Guardians, but you can't deny that at the very least, they try to take care of their subordinates.

You know… Now that I think about it, film and animation have been somewhat sparse on detail on what it's actually like to be inside the Phantom Zone. I think Superman the Animated Series depicted it as a sort of glowly nothing. Supergirl had it as a desolate grey rocky wasteland, with one exit point reachable at great peril. I only saw it in the comics a couple of times, and I don't see a fake Krypton.

In fact, I don't really see anything.

There's grey… A pale sort of grey, with no texture, no obvious light source… And… That's about it.

"Given that there appear to be finite spaces within, I do not believe that it can be. Perhaps the size changes with the number of people within it? Or perhaps it is merely very big. Without any sort of landmark to measure from there is no way to tell."

I nod. For a human, this sort of sensory deprivation would cause serious psychological damage. Perhaps something about this place allows you to… Sleep through it? Or perhaps kryptonians are different where sensory input is concerned?

"You mentioned someone called Lyla? I'm not familiar with a prisoner by that name. Is she a friend of yours?"

"No. She was a telepath who was using her abilities to conceal her presence on Krypton before it exploded. Since we're pretty sure that she wasn't hiding in Kal-El or Kara Zor-El's pods, this is the only place she could have come to escape."

"Telepathy is rare amongst kryptonians."

I raise my eyebrows. "I didn't realise it occurred at all."

"Our bodies respond to exotic energies strangely. My own mutation is proof of that. Speaking of which, I think that after this respite I'm ready to face the universe once more."

"You sure?"

"Jax-Ur was able to explain to me the advances in kryptonian medical science that have happened since my time. I was in shock before; I'm confident that I can learn what I need to cure myself."

"Hah!"

"Did I say something funny? I appreciate you putting me here, but now it is time for me to be released."

"You're not Nam-Ek. Your outline is wrong, your diction is wrong, and while you've made an effort to match his accent you haven't gotten it quite right. Which probably means that you're Jax-Ur, though if you can offer me evidence to the contrary I'll hear you out."

The grey blur stop moving and straightens up.

"They'd be dead now anyway!"

"If you'd like to make a representation to Governor Karsta Wor-Ul then I can certainly pass it on. But unless someone else was actually responsible then I doubt that she'll be interested." I frown. "But I'm interested in what the plan was, here. Even if I let you out, I know what Jax-Ur looks like. All that would happen is I'd chuck you back inside."

From nowhere a colossal purple hand appears around me, fingers gripping me as a pair of huge yellow eyes glow out of the grey mist!

Better than a mass of rocks floating in apparent space. The comics appearance, meanwhile, has often varied by era and artist, each putting their own spin on it. Really, it would be interesting if each race imprisoned saw it differently...

If Lyla's in there, she's not willing to come forwards, it turns out the Zone is kind of invested in keeping people inside, and at least two of the convicts have teamed up to force someone to let them out. And OL is more or less without limited to his rings against two rather troublesome kryptonian inmates. While he's strong, he ain't that superhuman...

Your empathic vision relies on the Holden, which doesn't reach the Phantom Zone. Meanwhile your rings are battery powered devices which contain their own charge.

After centuries of torment in Hell, two souls are brought before Aeacus to explain why they should be granted leniency.

If the Phantom Zone is mad they're paroling people, maybe make a deal to start tossing criminals in there again? Earth is in a weird spot right now, with regards to the criminal justice system, but there are plenty of other planets OL is on friendly enough terms with to go on a negotiation side quest and get a couple death row/life sentence convicts.

There's probably some reason this is a terrible idea, but I mostly remember the Phantom Zone from the movies, not the comics.

Didn't know about this. Guess this means Paul will be at this god's non-existent mercy until someone retrieves him from the Phantom Zone. At least Paul will be able to inform others of its true nature.

And to answer your question, not sure. At the very least, it would make him a sentient dimension. The Phantom Zone's more Lovecraftian properties don't often get brought up in canon, but there's always been something mystical and ominous about the place, and it by it's description alone, it wouldn't be out of place in the Chtulhu mythos.

Now that someone has actually gone and pissed it off, it's finally made its presence known. I guess that's what Kryptonians get for unknowingly messing with an extradimensional lifeform and feeding it the undesirables of their society for so long. And not unlike how when an eldritch abomination gets angry when you take away their daily dose of human sacrifices, I'm guessing that Aethyr isn't too happy about having his only food source taken away either.

Kinetic barrier… Not working, which is fair enough given that the fingers just sort of materialised around me rather than coming in from outside of its detection radius. Armour… Not really designed for this. My heavy armour is, but given that everything I know about the Phantom Zone said that it would be impossible to physically interact with anything I don't think that was much of an oversight. I'm not making an armour construct because I hope that whatever this thing is-

"No." Its head… It looks sort of like the head of a dragon, but floating there without a neck. The other point of reference (given the hands and head combination) is the Andross boss fight from Starfox 64-

"Not even slightly. Which is pretty unusual for me. Usually I've got at least some idea but in your case I'm drawing a blank."

"All this universe is Aethyr. I am its means to your comprehension. As the red sun was to the priests of Rao. As the burning bush was to Moses."

"So… You're the Metatron of the Phantom Zone." I nod. "Okay. That makes sense. And… Krypton was basically shoving their criminals into your brain."

"They entered the domain of the oversoul unbidden, and by so doing obliterated the distinction between its existence and their own."

"And me as well, I suppose."

"No." The eyes regard me curiously, though for all I know the gesture is my mind's interpretation of its general attitude rather than an actual expression. "It is."

Oh, this is going to get confusing.

"Not me. What do you mean by that? And what does it mean for-" I glance at the grey blur that is probably Jax-Ur. "-them?"

"Something about you means that you both are and are not a part of me."

"Hey, my wards actually did something! I'd sort of gotten used to my preparations not working."

"Okay, so you know how-" I gesture to Jax-Ur. "-kryptonian bodies respond to exotic energies strangely?"

"I know everything that they know."

"I had myself altered so that I absorb and internalise magic. And I guess that something about this place is similar enough that it's still working. Which would mean that I'm you, but you're also becoming me."

"What?"

"I don't know, and I'm going to suggest that it's not in either of our interests to find out. I'll be leaving shortly and I just need a few pieces of information before I go."

"I could take the spiritual force which defines you and merge it with the oversoul for all eternity!"

"I've never eaten an oversoul before, but I try to be open to new experiences."

Aethyr stares down at me.

"You hear my thoughts as your own. You know that I genuinely suspect that would happen. And no one here could explain it better than my mind."

"What do you want?"

"Was the empireth named Lyla here?"

"Yes. Can you imagine what that feels like? To have a part of your psyche torn away?"

"Do you want us to stop? To stop using Phantom Zone technology entirely, to remove the ones who are left here?"

"I want you to cease removing them."

"Ah… Can I talk to Nam-Ek really quickly?"

Another grey blur appears, and then-. Nam-Ek changes from a blur to a man. He looks around in surprise. "What?"

"There's a lot of that going around. Nam-Ek, Aethyr here is getting-"

Nam-Ek looks up and the giant purple dragon head. "Aargh!"

"-annoyed about us putting people in here in such a way that they become part of his mind and then removing them again. I know that you appreciated the respite, but I wanted to check whether you were alright with it becoming completely permanent or not."

"And become part of the new colony?"

"Or whatever you want. I'm pretty sure that we could reverse what happened to you. Or at least create a new unmutated body. I didn't say anything because we're a bit busy and I haven't had enough time to get everything ready, but it should be possible."

"And what about..?" He points at Aethyr's face.

"I will bear no more intruders. Leave, or become one with me."

Nam-Ek considers the issue for a moment. "Then I will choose to leave."

"Oh, good show. I was worried that you might… Not choose that. Ah. Bear no more intruders?"

"I will merge with any who remain."

Jax-Ur looks up at Aethyr. "But I warned you!"

"Do you think that means that I am obliged to you?"

"I-!" Jax-Ur turns back to me. "I am the greatest scientist Krypton has ever known! Take me with you!"

"While there's a theological argument in favour of letting you out and executing you, legally I'm not allowed to execute people on Earth and we can't try you for a crime that happened on Krypton and that you've already been sentenced for."

"The-!"

I love it when Paul threatens to eat powerful beings. It really shows these arrogant ones that Paul is not to be underestimated.

"While there's a theological argument in favour of letting you out and executing you, legally I'm not allowed to execute people on Earth and we can't try you for a crime that happened on Krypton and that you've already been sentenced for."
