With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Yep, still the plan.

Huh, thought that was just the Stars Crossed ending, what with him shouting his name at the source wall to get rid of the anti-life infection. Interesting.

Also I'm guessing the following isn't true anymore

"A sequel isn't impossible, but only because I'll be in such a groove at that point I couldn't imagine doing anything else."

-Mr. Zoat, 2014.

It still isn't impossible, but I'm also toying with the idea of learning how to make Hearts of Iron submods.
Technically not contradictory, but still kind of weird.
I'll modify it.

That's because there isn't really anything to set them off. The history they know doesn't mention him, their time machine isn't working... They're living their cover at this point, watching history diverge more and more from what they know. I do have a plan for them, but at the moment they're not really doing anything.
That's got to suck for them.

Quite true, but at the moment Darkseid is... Not 'enjoying' exactly... Deriving satisfaction from the way Kalibak is being driven slowly crazy by Grayven's successes. He's not going to take any active measure until that's resolved. In the other direction, Grayven is levelling up Earth until it can actually help him fight Darkseid.
I would be interested in seeing the Renegade beat Kalibak into the ground before Boom Tubing him back to Apokolips.

Does the Legion of Superheroes know about the changes Time Trapper OL made to how time works in the local cluster of universes? Are those changes the reason they can't go back to their original universe since it should still exist right?

The ones that Paul met should know what he told them, while the ones in the Renegade timeline would have no idea and no way to learn of it.

I got stuff confused. Sorry about that. For some reason I thought that their magic house was in Britain and that they used to live in New York, but don't anymore. I remember stuff about her being in a different time zone from the main team. Am I massively conflating stuff with how it's going for Cornwall Boy? Or is my only mistake that I didn't know that she's an immigrant originally from the US?

Edit: I feel like I'm having a Mandela Effect moment. I'm reading the story the second time through (some of the chapters for the third plus time) and I was always convinced that the Zataras had a connection to Britain. I even remember that thing about Zatanna dropping out of school in the wake of Fate's defeat and that newly freed Giovanni blamed that on Paul's example. And there was that thing about John being partially at fault for the death of Giovanni's wife. Now I am completely questioning my recollection of things...

"…can't promise anything with a longer duration than that…" Thomas McMahon, deputy editor… Sub-editor? One of those, of Universe Today, shrugs at Mayan. "We'll have to see what the reader engagement is like."

Mayan nods. "I would be happy to reach any quantity of people, but I do understand that is not a viable financial proposition for your company."

"Honestly, if we do end up extending your contract, it's probably going to be because of an increase in minbari readership. Right now…" He shrugs. "Alien columnists aren't going to be a draw to most of our human reader base."

"There are minbari who read-"

I don't need to be here. I should just leave them to-.

Wait.

Before you ask, yes, that was definitely external. / We should go downstairs. / We don't need to be here. / Shaal Mayan is a grown woman, and the angles are wrong for an amateur sniper.

Huh. Not just me, then.

"-Universe Today?"

Mr. McMahon nods. "Usually minbari who've moved away from the Federation. We're the only human news organisation who've got any full time correspondents on Minbar, and apparently getting information out of you people is like pulling teeth."

Scan… Where did I feel like going? The lobby. Scan the lobby. Anyone surprising?

Mayan sits forwards slightly. "I was unaware that any human news organisations had representatives on Minbar."

Oh look, another Psi Cop. Scan his records-. Wait, sending me a suggestion like that is very illegal without a warrant, and I know they don't have one. Who is he?

"Yeah, see? I think awareness that journalism exists is what's holding us back from increasing our minbari market."

A file appears in my mind. Jason Ironheart, apparently. Not a Psi Cop, but an instructor at the Psi Corps Academy. No legitimate reason to talk to me, as far as I can tell. Unless they still think I'm a telepath and have decided that a teacher would be a better avenue of approach than a police officer.

I sit up slightly, drawing Mayan's and Mr. McMahon's attention. And look at Mayan, mirroring his body language! "I'm sorry, there's a minor matter I have to attend to."

Mayan looks a combination of frustrated and disappointed. "Again?"

"Something different this time." I stand up. "Excuse me."

Out of the office, internal cameras there and there, office half-full, step around the corner to break line-of-sight and move to the bottom of the stairwell, then step out and walk towards the man sitting in the waiting area behind the… Copy of Universe Today.

If I go outside and wait in the car park-.

Really? / Overconfident.

So instead, I sit down opposite him and create a privacy field generator construct.

I only have to wait about ten seconds before he lowers his newspaper. "Can I.. help you?"

"An explanation for the telepathic assault would be nice, Mister Ironheart."

He tenses up at the mention of his name, then appears to notice the privacy field. "How-?"

I smile, tilting my head slightly to the left.

"How do you know who I am?"

"I'm afraid that as a public servant your employments records are publicly available information. A little facial recognition to sort through them all, and here we are. The assault, Mister Ironheart? I'm sure that the Psi Cops assigned to my case are quite capable of interrogating you, if you'd prefer."

"No. I'm-. Sorry. I wanted to meet up somewhere… Private."

"I've protected Shaal Mayan from five assassination attempts since we've arrived on Earth. I do not want to leave her alone for too long. What's this about?"

"I need to get off Earth."

"I'm not running a passenger liner, Mister Ironheart. I haven't even decided where I'm going next-"

The Nest.

"-and-"

I don't recognise that voice.

We'll talk later.

"-so I'm going to need a little more information than that."

"I wanna go wherever Lyta Alexander went. I know you made her disappear-."

I grin. "Heh-heh. Oh yes, this doesn't look like entrapment at all. I told-."

"It's not-. I was part of a secret Psi Corps program to try to increase my power. It… Worked, and-"

"Ah, neat."

"-I learned that the program was actually intended to create telekinetic assassins."

I nod. "Those could be useful."

"To assassinate the political enemies of the Psi Corps."

Oooooh. That could… Be a problem. If… True, and not associated with any other government assassination program… Because I'm sure that Earthforce has agents specialising in that sort of thing. But if the telepath regulatory authority is carrying out assassinations…

His eyes widen as I drop the privacy screen.

"Hm. Okay, look. If you want to go on holiday, I don't mind giving you a lift."

He frowns. "L-? She's on holiday?"

"Mm. I would of course need to apply for a visa for you. Please make sure that you have all pertinent documentation with you, particularly if any of it relates to criminal activity. They'll likely want you to declare it in advance."

"I don't.. know…" He looks away, thinking it over. "I can get it, but we'll need to leave right away."

"Certainly, Mister Ironheart. Let me know when and where you'd like to be picked up, and I'll be there in a jiffy."

"Right." He nods uncertainly. "…thanks."

"Not at all, Mister Ironheart. I hope you enjoy travelling with us. Now, if there's nothing else, I really should get back to Mayan."

"No, ah… That's it. How much notice are you going to need for-? To pick me up?"

"Well, more is better, of course, but whatever you can manage is fine. I'm not planning on leaving Earth anytime soon, so go at your own pace."

"Alright." He gets up, and I rise with him. "I will. Thanks. I wasn't sure you'd be able to help-. But this is a huge.. for me."

I shrug, and say the line. "I guess I just like helping people."

Oooh, Ironheart hitching a ride with 'Underwood' instead of going to B5 and running into Talia? Now this is a pretty big ripple.

...and this is absolutely going to bring down Bester on everyone's heads.
Oh, it's much more important than that. Ironheart is getting the documents. And will be scanned in detail. Ironheart is on the brink of becoming a First One - like existence, a being of pure energy. Meaning that, chances are, the process will become doable with an orange ring. Not "directly ascend people" probably, but "initiate the ascension process in a given telepath / human". That is bound to have political consequences, both internally for human politics and externally with other race relationships.

Wait, actually, shouldn't the ring be capable of turning people into telepaths / turning telepathy off by direct body modification? If it can do brain reconstruction and Danner formula injection, then gene modding and brain reconstruction should be possible too.

Also, yeah, independent assassination squad creation scandal too.

Shaal Mayan looking for that different approach to reach humanity, I see. From the sound of it, appealing to the world's most-read news source for the right to upload an editorial column.

"Honestly, if we do end up extending your contract, it's probably going to be because of an increase in minbari readership. Right now…" He shrugs. "Alien columnists aren't going to be a draw to most of our human reader base."

Who read human literature and news sources? I'm sure there are. Not just intelligence agents studying the human character, perhaps.

I don't need to be here. I should just leave them to-.

Wait.

Sounds like someone trying to send him a telepathic message. Or perhaps a command. And it seems to have affected a few of his passengers.

Huh. Not just me, then.

"-Universe Today?"
Because they share your head, they got hit by it.

Mr. McMahon nods. "Usually minbari who've moved away from the Federation. We're the only human news organisation who've got any full time correspondents on Minbar, and apparently getting information out of you people is like pulling teeth."

Ah, the human journalists taking the wrong approach, I see. As Mayan mentioned previously, Minbari default to authority even for information distribution. So them poking low-level functionaries isn't going to get them much news.

Since Journalists as humans understand the concept are not a thing amongst the Minbari, I take it. Those who disseminate information to the public are more likely spokespersons than investigative journalists. To slightly misquote Pulaski from GTA San Andreas: "They report what they're told to report!"

A file appears in my mind. Jason Ironheart, apparently. Not a Psi Cop, but an instructor at the Psi Corps Academy. No legitimate reason to talk to me, as far as I can tell. Ah, another meaningful butterfly in the timeline. No doubt havign a crisis of faith right now and looking for an 'out' from PSI Corps control.

I sit up slightly, drawing Mayan's and Mr. McMahon's attention. And look at Mayan, mirroring his body language! "I'm sorry, there's a minor matter I have to attend to."

Mayan looks a combination of frustrated and disappointed. "Again?"
Let me guess, she's wondering who's trying to kill her this time.

"Something different this time." I stand up. "Excuse me."

Fitting. Also, Power Rings make spy stuff so much easier.

If I go outside and wait in the car park-.

Really? / Overconfident.
Especially if it's open-air. An observer with good eyes and a little lip-reading skill...

So instead, I sit down opposite him and create a privacy field generator construct.

I only have to wait about ten seconds before he lowers his newspaper. "Can I.. help you?"
Nothing like cutting through espionage bullshit like the direct approach.

"An explanation for the telepathic assault would be nice, Mister Ironheart."

He tenses up at the mention of his name, then appears to notice the privacy field. "How-?"
Presumably more noticeable from within than from outside. Not like a cone of silence...

I smile, tilting my head slightly to the left.

"How do you know who I am?"
Making it clear he's responsible for said field, of course.

"I'm afraid that as a public servant your employments records are publicly available information. A little facial recognition to sort through them all, and here we are. The assault, Mister Ironheart? I'm sure that the Psi Cops assigned to my case are quite capable of interrogating you, if you'd prefer."
Honestly, computer analysis should have occurred to him already. An artifact of B5 being mid-90's sci-fi written by people born before computers could do that in seconds.

"No. I'm-. Sorry. I wanted to meet up somewhere… Private."

"I've protected Shaal Mayan from five assassination attempts since we've arrived on Earth. I do not want to leave her alone for too long. What's this about?"
Keeping busy, I see. The locals just don't learn, I guess.

"I need to get off Earth."

"I'm not running a passenger liner, Mister Ironheart. I haven't even decided where I'm going next-"
His ship might get a bit cramped with four people, for sure. Especially if they don't want to share the comfy beds.

The Nest.

"-and-"

I don't recognise that voice.
Oh-ho. A previously silent passenger? Ominous.

We'll talk later.

"-so I'm going to need a little more information than that."
Oh, that's going to be an interesting conversation.

"I wanna go wherever Lyta Alexander went. I know you made her disappear-."

I grin. "Heh-heh. Oh yes, this doesn't look like entrapment at all. I told-."
Yeah, not evading the suspicions at all.

"It's not-. I was part of a secret Psi Corps program to try to increase my power. It… Worked, and-"

"Ah, neat."
The problem being that it is still ongoing, and he may not survive the whole process, of course.

"-I learned that the program was actually intended to create telekinetic assassins."

I nod. "Those could be useful."
Depends on who they work for. And since it's PSI Corps behind it, well...

Someone with the right telepathic proficiency probably could cause micro-strokes in a target's brain. Make it look completely natural.

His eyes widen as I drop the privacy screen.

"Hm. Okay, look. If you want to go on holiday, I don't mind giving you a lift."
Ah, disguising the deal with something innocent sounding. Assuming Ironheart takes the hint.

He frowns. "L-? She's on holiday?"

"Mm. I would of course need to apply for a visa for you. Please make sure that you have all pertinent documentation with you, particularly if any of it relates to criminal activity. They'll likely want you to declare it in advance."
Such as the things done to Ironheart, for example...

"I don't.. know…" He looks away, thinking it over. "I can get it, but we'll need to leave right away."

"Certainly, Mister Ironheart. Let me know when and where you'd like to be picked up, and I'll be there in a jiffy."
In other words, document the program, sneak out everything you can carry on your person and be ready to run.

"Right." He nods uncertainly. "…thanks."

"Not at all, Mister Ironheart. I hope you enjoy travelling with us. Now, if there's nothing else, I really should get back to Mayan."
Hopefully she hasn't gotten into actual trouble while he's been away.

"No, ah… That's it. How much notice are you going to need for-? To pick me up?"

"Well, more is better, of course, but whatever you can manage is fine. I'm not planning on leaving Earth anytime soon, so go at your own pace."
If he has the equivalent of a burner phone, that would be a very useful form of contact number.

"Alright." He gets up, and I rise with him. "I will. Thanks. I wasn't sure you'd be able to help-. But this is a huge.. for me."

I shrug, and say the line. "I guess I just like helping people."
This is turning into a personal in-joke, isn't it? 😏

Hoo-boy. If Ironheart is being watched (and why wouldn't he be, if he's the surviving subject of an experimental trial) this is going to raise a big red flag with his observers. Given that Underwood is already implicated in the 'disappearance' of one PSI Corps operative... If Ironheart vanishes into thin air too, people are going to be looking for Matthew.

...okay, I'm going to be real here. Did Zoat fudge up the timeline, or is there official timeline for Babylon 5, because Shaal Mayan's assault happened way after the events where Ironheart turned into an energy being and left to who knows where...after giving Talia Winters telekinetic abilities.

Wait, actually, shouldn't the ring be capable of turning people into telepaths / turning telepathy off by direct body modification? If it can do brain reconstruction and Danner formula injection, then gene modding and brain reconstruction should be possible too.
It would certainly be capable of it in theory, given that psychic powers are demonstrably biological in nature, having been introduced into sentient species via genetic engineering.

Without the relevant scientific data though, Paul probably can't do it in practice.

It would appear we're going by production order, not air date.

"Mind War", with Ironheart (and introducing the intended to be a one shot Alfred Bester) aired March 2, 1994, with "The War Prayer" following a week larter on March 9 - but "The War Prayer" was episode 107, with "Mind War" as Episode 110.

He has scans of at least 4 telepaths (Lita, two psi cops, Ironheart), and quite likely many more (he likely scanned everyone who was in the building he was interrogated at), as well as however many minbari telepaths he scanned. The ring is clearly capable of independent genetic analysis - it was able to isolate the minbari beard genes and compare them to human genetics. So "ring, locate human telepathy genome sequence" should be possible, based strictly on what he already did in this continuity. As well as "ring, compare human telepathic gene to minbari telepathic gene" and "ring, adapt isolated sequence to narn biology" for thr bonus and G'kar's eternal gratitude.

The catch is that one might presume the Vorlons would have anti-tampering protocols of some kind in their work.

If he takes Ironheart to the Vorlons everyone in the Psi-Corp dies.

Possibly everyone on Earth too.

Vorlons are very limited in how they can interact with humans right now due to the time loop they established and which hasn't closed yet. They still need Sinclair to become Valen. Also, why? In canon Ironheart ascended with zero vorlon interruption or retribution.

Maybe, but also maybe not. Depends on how it all works, and how the ring works. We shall see, I guess.

I went with the official chronology.

The ring is perfectly capable of identifying genetic sequences in telepaths, and comparing them to those in other telepaths. That wouldn't help with turning a person who is not a telepath into a telepath, as they already have a complete brain. Might help with allowing them to have telepathic children.

Shouldn't the ring be capable of restructuring the brain? Like it did in the main timeline with the venombuster and agent orange victims. There's not much difference between that and adding the telepathic structures, as I understand it.

The Shadows response to that would be to have The Eye kill Matthew as the act of re-engineering the Narn to have telepaths would be taking a definitive stance against the Shadows.

The Vorlons have many ways to close the timeloop.

And they didn't know what caused Ironheart to ascend like that. (There's very good reason other species who have had telepaths longer then humans dont artificially increase telepathic power like the Psi-Corp was trying to do.)
