Technically there was another orange lantern out in the universe, so Paul may have thought it was best to refer to himself as the one not in the Vega sector.

They also most likely didn't call him out on it since they didn't care because they trusted him, and they knew about Larfleeze so thought that him founding a corps that isn't just one lunatic and the people he's enslaved is a good idea.

I think he also told them about Larfleeze, and if he didn't then they figured it out after Bloome came to Earth.

What he told them was technically the truth, and even if it wasn't it was still a fairly harmless lie that would make calling him out on it pointless.

Sure Obi-Wan, it was totally true... from a certain point of view.
But from other, closer to reality, point of view it was a bald-faced lie.

Except there was another orange lantern out there, along with his assimilated constructs, so technically there was a Corps. Not the best Corps, but still it was there.

And even if it was a lie it would still be a harmless one.

It was very much a stretching of the truth... which is to say, mostly a lie.

In his mind, he was already founding the Corps and determining what it was going to be. He was speaking as if it had already happened. He was establishing policies and protocols in a way that he could present himself as a legitimate officer of a legitimate organization instead of looking like a random guy with a power ring not beholden to any code or creed.

It's not as blatant of a lie as what he was saying about his age, but it was done under largely the same motivations.

Speaking of the "Gateways" chapters. I thought of something amusing.

What if Ring Paul found himself on the other side of the Gate, it is similar enough to Earth Prime. Perhaps a parallel Earth Prime.

Only that Paul did not start a fanfic about him getting an Orange Ring, rather that Paul wrote about him getting a Purple Ring. Because for whatever reason, "The Boys" was significantly more popular on that Earth. OL realizes that he meet that character during the great crisis of infinite Pauls and this starts a bit of an existential crisis. Probably ending with OL yelling at Mr. Zoat for writing him into Gate in the first place. A bit of a fourth wall break.

Speaking of which, did OL Paul recognize the world of Avatar: the Last Airbender when he went to recruit Azula? Because that show came out before this story was started. Does he already know that he is visiting locations from the fiction of our world? Maybe he already had that existential crisis I was joking about earlier and came to terms with it.

This now raises many more questions.

I'd say that he knows about the other fictional universes, as he knows about MLP and he recruited Luna.

I raise my right hand in greeting as Artemis and Buddug return to the reading room.

    "Good trip?"

Artemis nods, and I note that her quiver is fully restocked with quill arrows.

"All of the zombie children are back where they should be. And your gene analyser is being set up in the lab."

"Thanks. Did you get to see much of Caergwaed while you were there..?"

She drops into a nearby chair and starts loading up the next batch of research files.

"Not really. Things got a bit… Tense, when I told them the Queen wouldn't be coming back." Behind her, Buddug heads in the direction of the archive kitchens. "Thought I should probably keep my head down."

"Probably wise. The last thing we need is the Sheeda cities going to war with one another."

"Yeah. Anything new on your end?"

"I'm pretty sure that the Vampire Sun isn't Mageddon, which is a bit of a relief."

    "Really?"

"Yes. Mageddon has about four thousand times the mass of Sol. Aside from how aggressive it is, there's no way the Earth could survive close to it for any length of time. And the images Mother Box and the archivists have been able to piece together of whatever it was that killed the Justice Legion don't show a star or star-like object."

Artemis watches me for a moment.

    I watch back.

    "Grayven, what's Mageddon?"

"Oh, an ancient.. sun.. weapon system.. thing. It's supposed to have been made by the people… The people before the New Gods who manifested Source attributes. We usually call them 'Old Gods', for… Obvious reasons, though that term also gets used for gods who emerge from the Dream."

"And that's… Around in our time?"

"Yes, but it's anchored outside of our galactic cluster and extremely well guarded. Last time Darkseid tried taking a fleet there to study it, he was one of sixteen survivors out of a total crew of two million. No recoverable ships. I'm led to believe that one of the defenders was mildly bruised." I shrug. "Anyway, that was the only thing I could think of that came under the category of 'evil sun'."

"So if it wasn't a sun, what was it?"

    I shake my head.

"Humanoid. It appeared to either have dark skin or prefer dark clothing." I shrug. "Either it killed everything that got a good look at it, or it was so long ago that all the records have degraded to near-uselessness. Or more likely both."

    "Just… One guy?"

"Or possibly girl, or other or none. I couldn't even tell you whether or not it was conventionally humanoid. I've still got a lot of reading to do, but the outline appears to be confirmed from enough sources that I'm prepared to accept it. A single immensely powerful being comes out of nowhere and gradually starts destroying everything in its path. Fleets are sent and fleets are destroyed. The 'Justice Legion' are called in. They fight, lose, rally… Until eventually they run out of time and decide to go all-in. There aren't any mentions of the organisation as a going concern after that final battle, so I assume that was about it for them."

"So what was that stuff about trying to understand it?"

"Ah, that is interesting. It's not entirely clear, but it looks like someone collected samples of biological material from the site. And sent those samples to various places, including to the forebears of our friends in Caergwaed."

"And they used it to make the Sheeda?" She shakes her head. "Why?"

"Maybe the same reason why Lex Luthor commissioned Kon: use the strength of the one you hate to beat them."

"And that's where they got the Highborn? Yeah, they're.. strong, but they're not 'kill the galaxy's greatest heroes' strong."

"No, I don't think it was that. Remember, Earth went through multiple alien occupations. It isn't the centre of human civilisation in the future-past. There's no obvious reason why a laboratory here would be given vital work when there would be better expertise in other places."

    "Maybe they were specialised."

"Maybe. Magic-rich worlds are unusual, and unlike modern… You know what I mean, humans, they all use magic."

"So they needed magic to beat him."

"What makes you think they won?"

"The planet's still here. The.. Sheeda are still here."

"And we haven't seen a single baseline human since we got here." I shrug. "A lot of things are possible."

She nods slowly. "So what's the next step?"

"Full genetic work-ups of every Sheeda creature we can get. And while that's going on, the local Vat Masters and I have been trying to work out how to create an organic Bleed membrane instability generator. Because even if the rest of the universe stopped existing, the Bleed should still be there."

"The Bleed. That's the thing between parallel universes, right?"

"Indeed." I nod. "Because if we can generate electrical power, then even if we have to immediately funnel it into some sort of organic system, all of our problems become a lot more manageable. And even if the sun somehow eats it, then at least we'll learn more about what it can-"

    "Grayven?"

    "-do-. Yes?"

"How long have we been here?"

I smile. "Less than a day."

She huffs, closing her eyes and bowing her head. Then she lifts it back up and looks me right in the eyes.

"How long, Grayven? And don't tell me it doesn't matter because if we get a time machine we can go back to whenever. I've eaten meals, I've slept, and… Everything outside is the same. There aren't any days here and my computer's busted so I've got no idea how much time has passed. How long?"

"What makes you think I kn-"

    "Don't dodge the qu-"

    "-ow-? I'm sorry."

    "-estion!"

"I'm sorry, I… Genuinely don't know either. Humans tend to default to a twenty five hour day cycle if they can't see the sun, but neither of us are human."

She considers that for a moment.

    "What about your mother box?"

"She's struggling to operate, and I've got more important things for her to do than use her connection to the Source to measure time."

    "Can you build a clock?"

"Um. Probably? But I've got nothing to peg it to."

"Yeah, I… Think I need something. Not being able to schedule things is… Really confusing."

I nod. "Alright. I'll add it to the slate."

Those zombie children may have been human.

Sorry, why would the Sheeda not have a way of measuring time? You can't run a civilisation without it!

And even organic computers need a basic clock cycle.

They probably do and Grayven just didn't think to ask about it. I bet it's like a bone-clock thing with a heart that beats every second.

Come to think of it, they most definitely should have a way of measuring time. After all they have a time machine.

The way the Sheeda and people from her era measure time is most likely very different that she is more comfortable with the way she measures time.

Can you elaborate on why, because I tried to look it up and the only thing I got was a song by the Hooters?

Huh have to say I'm drawing a blank.

The closest to a likely suspect I can think of is Starbreaker.

He's basically if Dracula became Galactus.

He's not blue skinned or insectile though, so he's not an obvious patron for the Sheeda's phenotype.

There's no reason to believe that Nekron has anything even remotely similar to DNA.

A sun that destroys everything except living creatures seems like the opposite of something Nekron would do.

If I had to take a guess with the categories of "super strong humanoid, vague dark color code, maybe Magic" i would say Great Darkness. Trigon possessing Raven, maybe? Or eclipso in a really good host. Imperix discounting magic, maybe they just wanted to see if it would beat him rather than needing a counter.

There have been far more nonsensical things to have happened in DC, but you're probably right, I just can't think if anything else that it could be with my limited knowledge of the comics.

It drains energy out of living things to, Sivana complained that he could feel it every time he went outside.

The Sheeda and their toys are probably adapted to it, and the New God healing factor Zoat added to the New God package would probably explain Gravy and Artemis's resistance.

Road trip? Girl's night out? Either way, those two lucky ladies. Getting out of studying for a while.

Not difficult, all she needs to do is take a couple of splitting shots. And then pick up all the intact arrows...

Ah, visiting a neighbour city. Checking in on the locals probably sounds like a good plan, before anyone starts getting ideas about taking the crown.

Probably a good move, even if you weren't directly involved. You did have a front-row seat, though... Wouldn't be surprised if some enterprising noble decided your head would make a good rallying point for 'loyalists' to gather round in vengeance...

Can't be much. How long's he been reading up?

Well, given that it took giving the entire human race super-powers to beat it last time, I don't think it would be something you want running around..

Care to elaborate on any of that, Grayven? Not everyone has your encyclopedic knowledge.

Congratulations on not smiling there, G-man. Bloody troll.

A good question, given the aforementioned solution isn't as possible here, I suspect.

Not unexpected losses for Darkseid. After all, it was made to kill Gods.

...It's not Superboy Prime, is it? Or some Amazo offshoot? <sees Assblaster5000's comment about Nekron> Sheeeeeeit.

Well, whatever it is, it's powerful. Clearly it had some manner of hax abilities.

So... The Sheeda are vaguely descended form this thing, in a very loose fashion. That's... Worrying. But it doesn explain a little about their slightly higher resistance to the sun's light.

Or maybe they assumed it would leave them alone if it thought they were like it? Like some sort of biological IFF.

Also, would you want to be doing that shit in sight of the thing that apparently killed hundreds, if not thousands (Millions?) of superheroes?

It's also odd that no-ones come looking from outside the solar system, or even off Earth. This Vampire Sun entity kills everything that gets close, maybe? Even without the tech-destroying aura, that is.

I wouldn't call the Sheeda's lifestyle 'winning'. More... 'Slowly dying'.

Whatever happened, it did something to lock down the Solar System...

And once you have limitless energy, you can try to do something to use it to stop the Sheeda dying. Some manner of biological Replicator device, perhaps? Something to make food and nutrients...

Yep. I suppose even failing will teach you something about it. Especially if you finish the generator and something snipes it from orbit...

Ah... Feeling lost in this land of eternal twilight?

I don't think she's in the mood for any bullshit, Grayven. Don't try to play her on this.

    Dude...

    ...Seriously.

Huh. Well, I guess he's not trying to play her.

Isn't she a little busy? What with collating and deciphering seriously ancient records.

Huh, looks like he'll be making a New God Watch after all.

It's not like they're pressed for time, after all.

So, the Vampire Sun is a humanoid entity, somewhere in orbit of Earth? I suppose that explains why they haven't just left (ignoring Melmoth's stupid explanation), or no-one's come visiting. Now I'm picturing whatever it is prowling the Solar System like a guard dog, snapping at anything spaceworthy with major death rays.

to my understanding a bunch of tests were carried out by puting volunteers in a cave with no way of measuring time.

Though, my memory leads me to remember 48 hour cycles, since they almost universally reposted thinking only half the tme they actually spent had passed

    my memory is also faulty

Hmmm, speaking of New Gods, I think I recall there being some relation between the Black Light and Anti-Life Equation, so maybe someone did a bit of a fucky wucky and exposed the Life Entity to Darkseid's little passion project?

This is obviously a crackpot "theory" for the ages, and could very easily be me misremembering things (I could have heard about that connection I mentioned in a theory video at some point for example), but it does maybe, sort of explain why living things are, at least partially, unmolested by whatever's happening.

I remember that in the n52 comics Highfather wanted to get the white light to fight the AL Equation, but as for the black light and the Anti Life being the same I'm not so sure. Still it does make some sense.

Think less "biology" and more "vaguely 'alive' magi-tech" I'd say.

Doesn't really tackle the genetics part of the equation, but the direct quote from the chapter doesn't actually say that the bio-goop they scooped up actually came from the entity, so who knows?

Yeah and Artemis is being shown the sites, which are probably just shit.

Paragon and renegade really have the same problem of assuming other people know as much as they do because of their hax knowledge, so they don't inform them about stuff.

Either that, or no one is interested in the Sol system. If there are humans out there in the universe then they may not care about going to Earth, or given how long it's been they may not even know that they came from Earth due to losing the records.

He is finding it difficult keep his promise to Luna about not being an asshole.

Melmoths explanation may have made some sense actually.

They could have just stolen a ship from an era that had space ships and then used it to travel to another planet.

Yeah they couldn't travel with a ship in their own time without being eaten by the sun, but they could have traveled to an era before the sun became like that and just not go back to their time.

Melmoth was able to travel back in time and stay there for a long time, so it's possible.

This could mean that either their civilization is really fucking stupid in some aspects, or the explanation that Melmoth gave was accurate and they want to gather resources while hurting others, or that Melmoth and the queen were somehow controlling them and now that they're gone the control is also gone.

As for the Sheeda being so helpful, well they could just be manipulating renegade and Artemis until they get something from them and then just kill or torture them like their previous New God 'guests'.

Huh, not sure that anyone's mentioned this before but Mother Box is struggling because of Earth's Entropy Field, which means whatever is doing this can, at the very least, interrupt a connection to The Source.

This is not a good thing.

Might lend some credence to my crackpot theory of a corrupted Life Entity though, which is neat.

Edit:Not that the Life Entity appearing away from Earth makes much sense...

How does that explain it? Even if Vamp-Ra (btw there's something very wrong with an entity that could be described both as 'vampire' and as 'sun'; some things just don't mix) stood guard and killed anything going in or out it's still limited to one era.

Sheeda have a time machine. Their entire civilization is based around it. You can't send a spaceship around this fucker? Just go before he was a thing and send them away.

Also, New God tech is apparently living enough that it works. Are you telling me that BoomTube-esque interstellar portal or teleportation machines aren't a thing in this crummy future?

You know, I'm honestly surprised that nobody has pointed out something obvious about the description of the being that thrashed the Justice Legion and brought on Sheedafuture.

The description, honestly, is not inconsistent - barring power level, and that could be explained by the passage of time between "now" and then - with a description of Grayven.

Regular 2010's Earth has the Zeta-tubes, and those are just meh versions of BoomTubes, so The Sheeda almost certainly have something that can function for long-range, near-instantaneous travel.

The question is exactly why they haven't done just that. They certainly don't care enough about the average citizen of their world, so the people they would leave behind aren't the issue, so why?

My personal bet is some magic fuckery combined with The Sheeda's higher-ups considering the situation acceptable enough to continue as-is.
