Malakar the Irredeemable, Son of the Abyss, was the dread right hand of the Lord of Darkness and the most powerful demon archmage in the world. Mortals quailed at the thought of being sent to his experiment chambers, where their souls were little more than ingredients in his dark magic.

Or at least they did, until the forces of Heaven overthrew the Dark Lord.

Forced to flee through an experimental portal, Malakar emerges in the strange city of New York, where the humans don't even have the good sense to kneel before him. Which is understandable, since his magical powers have been sealed away, leaving him trapped in the body of a frail human child.

Even worse, Carassiso the Damned—spider demon-queen, rival genius, and all-around insufferable presence—has escaped heaven's wrath as well. Malakar has no choice but to tolerate her company as they navigate this new world and try to survive the angels sent to hunt them down.

But the more they experience, the stranger this 'New York City' seems. Why isn't there any magic here? What are 'video games', and why do they function as portals to other dimensions? Why do these humans bake their pizza so thin when clearly deep dish is superior?

Gathering a crew of unwitting mortals, Malakar sets out to answer these questions, reclaim his lost powers, and remind creation why it once trembled at his name. But he might want to hurry. He's not the only one who's changed, and reality is shifting beneath his feet...
