The signal came in at 03:14, on a frequency the radio was not supposed
to hear.
Mira watched the waveform for a full minute before she touched anything.
The amplitude was wrong — too clean, too narrow, banded into a shape
that ate two adjacent channels and left nothing in between. Whatever
was broadcasting it didn't care about civility, or didn't know what
civility was.
She made coffee. She did not call anyone yet.
The pattern repeated every forty-three seconds. By the time the kettle
clicked off, she was sure: it wasn't a glitch, and it wasn't from here.
