Epic is giving away a trilogy of the original Fallout Games today only. Don't miss it, you only have 24 hours.
This is the good stuff, and it isn't even Christmas yet. Yes, they are oldies (20 years old), but they are still very much goodies, and many people can't play their CD-ROM versions because most modern systems don't have CD-ROMs anymore.

Fallout plays very similar to a fusion of Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale and Jagged Alliance or the original X-Com (original, TFTD, & Apocalypse, less so the remake) with a story and setting that's more along the lines of Wasteland and was indeed intended to be a spiritual successor to the original 1980's Wasteland since they couldn't get the rights at the time. If you liked any of those games you'll probably like this.
The game is a contemporary of Baldur's Gate, hence the low system requirements on Epic's page. I can confirm the CD-ROM version worked on a 300mhz laptop with 96mb of RAM. While I claimed a digital copy since CD-ROMs are going the way of the floppy, I haven't tried the Epic version. I never got to try Fallout Tactics, so that's going to be my next game. Given the requirements I wonder if there's a way to get it on my 1ghz Win98Se/XP computer, as I don't know how to get it without the Epic Launcher even if it will probably run without it.

 

I don't know if anything changed but running game with -EpicPortal parameter should let you run it without having launcher (at least it mean that you don't open Epic when starting the game).

 

GOG has DRM free versions that run pretty well on modern computers and you can download the installer in a USB from the site, though obviously they're not free, but they are 75% off right now.

 

So I just found out that DDLC is free on Steam. Not sure how long it's been free, but let's dive headfirst into trauma.

It's always been free, not sure what rock you were living under. Only the remake (which removes some of the more interesting aspects of the original) and the fan pack weren't free.

 

It does add some new lore too though.

 

Doesn't the game need to be installed to work? Or could I say copy it from the Windows 10 computer to the XP machine via the network and run it from there?
I mostly keep that old thing around to run old games that don't work on Win10, but I'm due to make my yearly full backup and I figured I might play the game on hardware from when the game was made while I'm doing the backup.
Well, only it it isn't finished if I start the backup and leave the computer on overnight and then goto work and it's still not done.
That only happened when I made the mistake of trying to do a backup of 2 128gb drives onto a flash drive connected to a USB 1.1 port instead of using the network to do it onto a computer with USB 2.0 ports.

 

Not sure if you can just copy it. Still Fallout 1 should run on Win10 even if you may need to find mod/unofficial patch.

I just haven't had time to read the plot for the last 6 months, and I was skimming before.

I've got all but one collab ship (the Anniversary Kizuna AI/Aircraft Carrier from the Kizuna AI event). All other collab and limited construction ships have been obtained. You'll still have to clear chapters 13 and 14. But there should be nothing stopping you for upgrading the gear.
