General chat thread

Wondering which thread is the best place to drop ponderings about the Corrupt Church trope and how the only example that actually has Jesus is Hunter the Parenting where it's visually explained via Wyrm infection.

Followed by my assumption for why there isn't an evil Jesus for a corrupt church is because the narrative falls apart when at the end of the day he's a Late Classical Era Iron Age hippie.

Or maybe I'm just impatient and have to keep waiting until I can schizo rant about Catholicism dooming both itself and stagnating the entire Romance speaking world, except France who lucked out with Napoleon.

One of our dogs might be sick. He's had what's best described as a panic attack for the past 2 days. Pacing the floor. Following my mom around.

He took a massive dump last night and that seemed to calm him but he was back at it again today. We're worried it might be bloat but he doesn't match most of the symptoms. He finally calmed down again just a little ago, coincidentally right after I called in, but we just don't know what's going on with him or what's wrong. He's a 7 year old boxer so he's not exactly young anymore either, but aside from some arthritis he's seemed to be in pretty good health.

I ended up calling in from work partly because I'm not gonna be able to focus, but mostly because if we have to take him to the pet ER the battery is out of my mom's vehicle and dad is at work and would have to drive home, pick him up, and then drive back to town taking almost an hour to get him there.

Ah, yes. "Christianity bad!" Such a brave and stunning statement to make, such a bold conclusion to draw. /s
Not really that satisfying for a deep dive, than again I know I'm overthinking it. Assuming why it's always the church itself but never an evil jesus is because it stops making sense when at the end of the day it's a religion founded by a Late Classical hippie.

Or maybe they're just hyper-fixating on the Old Testament part since it generally fits their strawman. Although since I haven't consumed any mainstream western media in a long while I can't really think up of any examples. But that could also because most of the commentators I follow are of the "Mainstream has fallen. Billions must indie." mindset. Hence why I need to finish my game and add random ammo/health drops before adding another tier of enemies and polishing the sprite-work.

Jesus is generally ignored by fictional depictions of Christianity, and "close enough" equivalents in other fiction, because if you have an organization structured around helping people, treating others well, and forgiveness, and which has the majority of people involved treat the ideals seriously, you have the opposite of conflict in many cases. It's also hard to write Jesus, or even characters similar enough to him, without making either a hollow faker or a broken madman, because otherwise, you have someone that is more of an anti-conflict figure than anything else.

See cases like High School DxD, where Christianity features heavily, but Jesus is never mentioned, and apparently, forgiveness of supernatural beings opposed to Heaven, no matter how justified their original turns were, is impossible. Fallen angels and devils simply cannot get into Heaven except for maybe brief visits, no matter how pious they are or were. The Church employs mass-murderers because they need muscle to oppose supernatural evil. And God was apparently little more than a self-righteous jackass among many other divinities.

Getting more and more nervous as time goes on, I'm going for the local Operating Engineer Union Apprentice and I'm starting to bank on it more than I probably should.

I work currently doing work at an old folks home and it's super bullshit and pays like ass, so even the magical world of construction looks significantly better and I'm terrified I wont get into the program.

Occam's Razer says most of these writers have never seen the inside of a Church in their lives, let alone touched any kind of Bible, and so literally don't know Jesus Christ exists as anything beyond "the bearded god Christians worship".

It's very cool and awesome when people can not tell the difference between Protestants and Catholics, actually./s

I've also been learning a bit about Christianity as an outsider, for fiction writing purposes, and most of my personal distaste for Christianity is largely with the new fangled Protestantism and Baptism of America, and that the Catholic Church, as it is in Rome, is actually far more recognizable to me as a good institution with clear rules. Which I find darkly funny.

Christianity doesn't really follow the Old Testament by definition. It's all about the New Testament, and a new Covenant with God through Jesus Christ. So things like Deuteronomy nowadays are more like rules the Jews should follow rather than Christians.

Which is not without precedent, since in the Old Testament a new Covenant with God had been made through Noah as well.

Look no further than Witch Hunts. Mostly happened in Protestant countries where you could just whip up a religious mob and start hanging witches, while in Catholic ones you had to go through layers of church bureaucracy, conduct a documented investigation, if you wanted to torture a suspect it was a tool of desperate last resort you needed a special permission for and could only conduct under medical supervision from a professional and so on. And, at the end of the day, most of charges of witchcraft got dismissed as things like mental illness since the Church's stance on magic and witchcraft is that it doesn't exits.

There were a few times the Church flexed its authority to conduct some politically motivated killing but, again, those were rare.

For comparison, the Spanish Inquisition has, over 300 years, tried a few hundred thousand of people, most of which were declared innocent, a few dozen thousand guilty, and 2-3 thousand of those had been executed. Meanwhile, during the French Revolution, in a single year they executed, mostly without trial, something like 35-45 thousand of people.

So, the French Revolutionaries executed in one one single year 20x more people than the Spanish Inquisition did in over 300.

Pope Sixtus also wrote a huge take down of "Why the fuck are you doing this?"

In April 1482 Sixtus IV issued a bull in which he protested:

Pope Sixtus IV said:
'that in Aragon, Valencia, Mallorca and Catalonia the Inquisition has for some time been moved not by zeal for the faith and salvation of souls, but by lust for wealth and that many true and faithful Christians, on the testimony of enemies, rivals, slaves and other lower and even less proper persons have, without any legitimate proof, been thrust into secular prisons, tortured and condemned as relapsed heretics, deprived of their goods and property and handed over to the secular arm to be executed to the peril of souls, setting a pernicious example and causing disgust to many.'

Ferdinand was outraged and in public pretended to disbelieve the authenticity of the bull on the grounds that no sensible pontiff would issue such a document. Then kept doing what he was doing, eventually he had to retire as a friar.

I dunno, I respect that more than what weird Protestants do? Like, the history books will say the actual Translator for God called him an asshole at the time.

The hilarious bit is how Martin Luther, the man that kicked off the Protestant Revolution in Christianity, never intended to do so. He nailed a list of grievances to a church door very publicly, and many of those were justified problems while others were not quite as significant (or were more his own ideas than true Church issues). He wanted those issues addressed, or at least debated.

To say things spiraled out of control from there is a bit of an understatement.

But Christianity keeps the Old Testament because if nothing else, it is useful perspective and history, and some of the old codes are still relevant today. Though many are not, which is the point of the word of Jesus.

And to be fair, comparing the murderousness of the French Revolution to almost anything is ridiculous. The thing only ended after the main architect of the governing body that killed the last King was himself put to death.

For trying to replace God. Yes, really. Not with himself, but with a new figurehead "Supreme Being" of his own ideological framework.

It took something like that to get the nutcase put to death and end the senseless killing.

Christianity is not supposed to follow the old testament, it exists to supercede it.
Judaism was a very ethnocentric religion ther had to be made universal to do what it was supposed to do, namely culturally stabilize, unify and revitalize the Roman Empire.

Orthodoxy was basically what all Christianity was supposed to be.

Goes to show that Spanish Inquisition wasn't so bad in the grand scheme of things.

Another comparison could be made with the modern day US justice system, which had executed ~1600 people in the last 50 years or so. Spaniards needed a century or two to reach that number, but then again the population numbers were much smaller for them. Either way in both cases they got trials and, once again, most tried people who were found guilty did not get killed.

Yeah, that's largely, because dying to prevent conversion isn't something we ask of our people, The Rule of Pikuach Nefesh means you can fake any religion to preserve life, because preserving life is above everything else. Historically and legally, if an oppressive regime forces Jews to convert to another religion to avoid being killed, most rabbinic authorities (including Maimonides/Rambam) ruled that a person should outwardly comply rather than face martyrdom, as long as it is done to stay alive and they remain Jewish in their heart. There are three specific things a Jew must die rather than commit, even to save their life: idolatry (avodah zarah), severe forbidden sexual relations, and murder.

E: Forgot critical keywords. "Dying to Prevent" Complete changed the meaning of that sentence.

Be polite. Those new fangled American weirdos fought an entire war to end slavery in their country.

Paladin or gentleman feels too conceited. I need something humbler.

Humble servant, maybe?

The point of "edgelord" is that it is the idea of taking darkness, edginess, and cynicism to a point it becomes ridiculous. The opposite of that is taking sweetness, happiness, and optimism so far it is ridiculous. The term in English for that is usually "glurge".

If you want something "non-ridiculous" from either direction, just use the terms like dark, bleak, or dreadful for the unhappy kind, and pleasant, caring, and helpful for the happy kind.

The style of the site changed just now and going in to preferences and changing style doesn't work. Is there any way to make it look like it was before without the browinish lines and different layout.
