Allow me to elaborate about the further context that went right over Wes' head and I couldn't find a way to fit it in.

The situation on Romin for the Romins

You notice how the members of the MIBC really liked torcs? Funny thing about those bronze torcs. They are not a fashion statement or a prestige item, those are the mercenary's life savings. Like keeping all your money as cash inside your mattress. Yeah the foot soldiers in the MIBC don't believe in banking. They understand the concept intellectually, they just think it is a stupid idea. That's why they are buying something valuable, easily portable, easily pawnable, doesn't draw as much attention as Credits, and could be worn or carried around in large quantities. Yes that means they drop vendor trash loot when you kill them.

This is mostly because the Romins' planet (also called Romin) is a terrible place to live. The one glimpse we got of it was a planet where a vast majority of the Romins lived in slums. Their planet's previous Tyrant-Dictator (yes that was his title) actively invited criminals to his planet for sanctuary in exchange for massive bribes from said criminals. He built the planet's economy primarily on being a legal haven from galactic law and building mansions for criminals to live in while letting his citizens wallow in destitution.

Now that Tyrant-Dictator was overthrown in a citizens' uprising at the end of a short story. Unfortunately that was in 24 BBY. My take on a post short story fate for the planet of Romin is that the new citizen government collapses after failing to meet their promises and the state of mass poverty persists. This is not really their fault given the Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire were right around the corner at the time they staged their uprising. If anything the situation probably got worse with both the criminal underworld and the wider galactic community support they were reliant on probably got withdrawn in a year or two after the revolution.

The Empire would certainly not help them rebuild given the Romins weren't human, and probably just put a new Tyrant-Dictator in charge as a puppet so they don't have to deal with the Slum Planet. So the planet is still probably filled with slums and poverty. Also with said Tyrant-Dictator might end up bringing back the Republic era policy on redacting poverty, so being caught in the act of Being Poor outside the slums without sufficient reason or documentation is likely to see one arrested.

All this horribleness of growing up in endless slums and the massive offworld criminal population trying to prey on the Romins is going to lead to a deep distrust of institutions. For the Romins in the MIBC, that manifests in their view towards wealth. Mainly the belief that the only wealth you truly own is what is on your person and what you can hide from others. The idea of declaring how much wealth you have and handing it over to an institution for safekeeping just doesn't click with them.

The Nobility and the Old Monarchy on Yulies

So about the Nobles siding with the Empire. They might be twisting the truth a tiny bit to fit their agenda. The Nobles actually killed the royal family for their own selfish reasons. They were in the middle of squabbling over who should be in charge when an Imperial fleet showed up in their system a month afterwards.

They couldn't agree who could lead, but now they all definitely agreed it would be better to suck up to this massive fleet to try to keep their status and wealth. The Imperial fleet in question accepted mainly because they were passing through on their way to conquer somewhere more important. They just hastily promoted one of their onboard administrators to Liaison to avoid wasting time on this dirtball and the arrangement has held up ever since.

The bandit leader mentioned in the Omake was an ex-Royal Guard still pinning for the days of old. Most of the surviving royalists were not happy or cooperative with the new regime. The NCC is currently using Guild mercenaries as a politically outside force to stamp out the remaining monarchists who are also anti-Imperial. All these wider political implications are completely lost on Wes because his mind is empty of everything that doesn't involve indulging his hobbies, indulging himself, and petty high society gossip. Trying to discuss anything else is likely to earn a vacant uncomprehending stare from the man.

It was really frustrating having all this lore and not having a good place to put it in the Omake if you couldn't tell.

Relative comfort for a quite a bit more relative danger. Wes is lazy, not completely ignorant to danger. Planetside jobs have a much less chance of Wes getting hurt. Especially when he commands (hides) inside the capital and never goes on patrols with the rest of the MIBC. Unless the bandits get very bold, Wes really isn't in any danger of seeing combat.

Space meanwhile always runs the risks of encountering a larger enemy ship. Wes is used to commanding (sleeping, eating, and back to sleeping) a space yacht. He has at least seen a headline or two of pirates having capital ships, and wants none of it. Even if he upgraded his main ship from a space yacht to a capital ship, there is always a chance of it getting hit with weapons fire and making him spill his fancy dessert.

Also there is the fact that Wes is still very much out of favor with The Family. The infantry equivalent to the security division of one of The Family's smallest subsidiaries is a very different ask than a small fleet. They are demanding Wes contribute, not giving him a blank check.

Not like the Alliance doesn't have its own ace pilots. But Tide does sound like the kind of thing you go to Rogue Squadron specifically for.

And even then it sounds like the type of unit that would make reoccurring Villian status as a Rogue squadron counter unit. Something that Luke has to really rely on other supporting units to counter rather than just pure force skill BS.

I wouldn't gas them up THAT much.

The Whirlwind is a good fighter, the pilots are good at what they do, but the Alliance also has good fighters and good pilots.


You need an elite squadron. But you also need an elite squadron to handle Soontir Fel and the 181st Fighter Wing.
 
Fortunately, TIE Whirlwinds are such hyperspecialized birds that the odds of seeing them in the hands of anything more than the one elite squadron or a few isolated aces that merited a custom starfighter are almost nil.

Unfortunately, their extreme rarity will make them disturbingly lethal when engaging squadrons that don't recognize their make.
 
2 to 1 for 50% odds against Whirlwinds

But then we have to remember the Sector's "basic" TIEs are shielded, faster and packing more firepower than the average outside the Sector at a slight price increase.

They just aren't widespread cause the rest of the Empire is still running their pilots like fodder, and the price increase ruins the budget of the already corrupt territories

It's gonna be really awkward if some of Las' ships are requisitioned to participate in Palpatine's trap at Endor, with several LECA battalions stationed at the array.

The Force may finagle a victory for the Rebels but they're gonna be wary of storming Myto since their distance policy allowed uninterrupted military buildup of the new units.

The chase through the second Deathstar might actually be a close thing if whirlwinds or Myto TIEs follow Lando

This reduction in raw firepower stems directly from internal space constraints and the added mechanical complexity of mounting the cannons on articulated moving turrets. Naval tacticians do not view this lighter armament as a structural defect because the Whirlwind was never intended as a multirole platform. While the Defender was built to engage capital ships and assault craft alike, the Whirlwind is engineered purely to fight vessels of its own size class, making four turreted cannons more than sufficient to disintegrate enemy starfighters.

SECTION IV OPERATIONAL LIMITS AND PILOT CAPABILITIES

The operational cap of 150 on the maneuver rating is a software safety barrier embedded directly within the onboard flight systems. Flight testing revealed that beyond this threshold, the starfighter responds and turns far too rapidly for standard human reflexes. The control sensitivity becomes so hyper reactive and the rotational acceleration so extreme that average pilots instantly overcorrect, lose control of their flight vector, and forfeit situational awareness. This physical twitchiness, combined with display telemetry flooding the cockpit faster than the mind can process, makes operating above 150 impossible for all but the most exceptional aviators.

Despite this universal computer restriction, select elite flight officers have demonstrated the ability to manually override these parameters. True aces within specialized formations like Tide Squadron regularly operate beyond standard safety margins, with most squadron members flying between a rating of 150 and 160. Commander Alvi Mola represents the highest recorded threshold among conventional naval aviators, having demonstrated the capability to master the craft's extreme responsiveness and maintain full spatial control at a maneuver rating of 168.

The absolute highest maneuver rating score ever recorded in test telemetry was achieved by the Inquisitor known as the Seventh Brother, who reached a score of 175 during a specialized evaluation flight. Naval analysts theorize that his Force abilities allowed him to anticipate spatial vectors and react to the craft's hyper-sensitive movements at speeds that completely bypass normal biological limitations.

You may want to change the unit cost to make it a cheaper, canonically the TIE Defender which is supposed to be an even more expensive and superior ship costs 310,000 credits.

Its cost is purposeful. The Whirlwind is, unlike the Defender, not meant to become commonplace. Its meant to be rare, given only to Aces. The Defender may be more armed and armored, hell its even faster technically speaking, but its not nearly as maneuverable and that maneuverability comes at a cost.

A better method would be to set the base MGLT a lot closer to 150 ( Defender is 115), so only elite Pilots can properly control it, the 100 gives it the same output as a standard TIE and makes it slower than the X-Wing and the TIE Defender.
The MGLT/s acceleration and atmo speed is also lower than the TIE Defender.
The current acceleration makes the max speed irrelevant in a dogfight. Set it to 27 or 28 MGLT/s and 2,000 km/h and it would make it so only the absolut best pilots could use it.
Anyone not in the 1% would just die trying to use it.

And with all the missing system the price should be lower especially with all the missing systems
- Hyperdrive
- 4 Laser Cannons (2 Wing and 2 Chin)
- 2 Ioncannons
- Tractorbeam
Combine that with the constant insistence for part compatibility and the price makes even less sense.
With the Whirlwinds extra Shields, Sensors and oversized drive it should probably be closer in cost to 200.000 (wich is still overpriced with the missing systems).
Any slowdown in proliferation can easily be explained by production volume and Imperial corruption. The Whirlwind is also longer than other TIE models, so it could need retrofits for the hangerbays, leading to more slow down or unwillingness for adoption.
