I'm mostly playing it for laughs here, but it mainly comes from how (at least from what I've read and seen so far) most relationships in Danmachi are either Unrequited Love, Unreciprocated Love, or "My Wife Is Dead" Love.

Most characters have some form of Unrequited Love towards someone else, not being able to be with them because of circumstances (Welf loves Hephaistos but thinks he's unworthy of her, and she's a God; Bell's Harem in general; Bell towards Aiz).

Some have "Love" that only existed because of expediency (That one Prum who's in Freya Familia and seduced/tricked that Amazon girl into falling for him, then tossing her to the side when she stopped being useful).

And one of the only times I can remember where two characters had actually admitted their love for each other, consummated it, and kept it going...was that one guy outside of Orario who's Goddess died on him. And then he died to be with her in the Afterlife. Oh, and Aiz's father and mother...who are both dead.

So, even if it's not true, I have to imagine that most adventurers and people connected to Familias have never seen a legitimate, romantic, reciprocated relationship before. Or, at the very least, are surprised at how bold and open Simon and Nia are about it.

Actually, there was at least one time where the creators somewhat confirmed that Nia and Simon did it before she disappeared.

They were asked at a panel and just said they "Did what needed to be done". Which, is as much confirmation as we're gonna get.
