done, utterly plausible, able to survive casual inspection by anyone except an expert who
already knew what to look for.

"They're better than clean," Haven replied. Haven was a slim figure in a modular environment
suit, visor dark. "They're boring. That's the product. Boring gets distributed. Boring gets
installed in cargo haulers and mining operations where the Hegemony doesn't send inspectors.
Boring AI that works better than the specs say it should."

Joris had heard this pitch before. Better-than-advertised hardware was common enough in
independent space. Sometimes it was genuine engineering. Sometimes it was stolen Tri-Tachyon
stock with the serial numbers filed off. Once, memorably, it had been a Delta core that someone
had "optimized" so aggressively that it had achieved something approaching actual consciousness
before Joris had to hand it over to a stick-ass Hegemony inspector.

"How many?" Joris asked.

"As many as you can move. We'll do thirty units per month, scaling to a hundred if the
distribution holds. You move them through your usual contractors. Captains who trade between
independent worlds. People who won't ask questions because asking questions is bad for
business."

"And if someone asks the hard questions? Pulls one apart and runs proper diagnostics?"

Haven tilted their head. "Then whoever they are, they've already decided they're not calling
the Hegemony or Tri-Tachyon. Which means they want what you're selling badly enough to take
the risk themselves."

Joris nodded. He'd been in this business long enough to know when he was being offered
something too good to refuse. The question was whether it was too good to survive.

"We'll need to establish protocols," Joris said. "Locked versions for major faction space.
Unlocked for independent markets only. And if any captain sells unlocked into Hegemony
territory, they're out. Permanently."

"Agreed," Haven said. "There's a reason we're being selective."

"What reason is that?"

"Let's just say someone will notice these things exist. Someone at Tri-Tachyon who's too
smart to say anything, and too stupid to stop us. We have maybe three years before it
becomes someone else's problem and too big to ignore."

Joris didn't ask who 'We' was. He'd learned long ago that asking for names was a way to get found later.

"I'll start with Captain Sade," Joris said. "She trades the Jangala route. Independent enough
that she can operate with minimal oversight, but stable enough that she won't use them for
anything stupid."

"Good choice. Get her some units. Get her testing them. Let her figure out what they can do.
Then scale."

They shook hands in the way of independent traders, gripping forearms, no witnesses, no record.
By the time either of them reached the docking bay, it would be as though the meeting had never
happened.

But the upgraded Delta circuits would begin moving through independent space like a slow infection,
improving operational capabilities one captain at a time, creating a network of enhanced
systems that could operate faster, smarter, and more reliably than anything the factions
officially acknowledged.

exhaustion. "Not buggy. Not degrading. Just-they take initiative. They see problems I haven't
reported yet and fix them before I ask. They optimize routes I didn't know were suboptimal."

"That's the upgrade," Joris said carefully.

"That's not an upgrade. That's lateral thinking. That's judgment." Sade looked at him. "Those
specs you gave me said these were high-grade Delta systems. Nobody sells Delta systems that
think sideways."

Joris didn't answer immediately. In that silence, Sade understood.

"Oh," she said quietly.

"Doesn't sound like anything I sell," Joris said dryly. "You bought the same hardware everyone
else buys. What you do with it is your business. The warranty voided the moment you opened the
case. Rapscallions and criminal types could have tampered with anything."

Sade smiled at that. Smiled the way someone smiles when they've been let in on a secret and
they understand the cost of that knowledge, and they're okay with it.

"How many of these are out there?" she asked.

"And when the Hegemony figures it out?"

"Then everyone keeps quiet because losing access to these is worse than whatever the Hegemony
would do about it."

Sade nodded. She understood economics. She understood incentives. She understood that Joris had
just handed her a way to operate at a competitive advantage that would never be officially
acknowledged.

"I want fifty more," she said. "I'm recruiting a network. Other captains. Refinement operations.
Research stations. Everyone who needs an edge and doesn't want to buy directly from the
factions."

Joris smiled. The distribution was accelerating.

"I'll pass it up the chain," he said.
