On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

Hey who said that , what was that suppose to mean
It was Seiun Sky imagining Shirogane chasing her with a knife.

Mori Survival is a true survivor alright she lives after being chase by the Demon of Distance
The funny thing is her name can mean 'Survival of Death'

King Halo missing the point that Shirogane is saying there was TOO much pressure on the girl in front of her, because she wore herself out, which is a BAD THING.
King Halo is probably the uma in their year with the most outside pressure on them. Tsurumaru has quite a bit on her too.

The entire conversation with Steady Distance is really great, and it also shows that Shiro isn't beating the grey coat stereotypes. She's such a goofball, I genuinely wish we could have seen her and Tamamo Cross have a proper conversation where Tama just has to figure out how to retort to all the absurdities Shiro ends up throwing at her.
Tamamo Cross: "Oh great, she's like Oguri but with money instead of food. And she's got brains too!"

That said, in the alt universe, Shirogane could work as a successor protagonist as another Cinderella Gray.

Oh yeah... Breathe it in, that's the smell of Shonen rivalry in the air.
The Golden Generation is going to earn their nickname alright.

Demon of Distance, is that one in the game? I dont recall.
I don't think so, it's just El Condor Pasa being overly dramatic, though it might catch on later, since past 3 kilometers there aren't many umas who can match her.

I also really like that the three classmates with higher wit pick up on Shiro's intentions first, then everyone else gets clued in once Grass says something.
The others were all wondering what 1600m race she was talking about, then the ones who can study by themselves realized that Shirogane, in Shirogane fashion, is grouping things together that are technically in the same group but really shouldn't be.

Shiro is a little demon and her past life skill of giving rousing battle speeches has carried over, now she just drops cold ass bars at random.
The quiet one the in group who sometimes throws out the wildest things, lol.

Also nevermind the winning live, Mori isn't running for the next month and a half, minimum.
We'll have to see if she wants to continue racing, or if this race proves too traumatic.
Mori Survival retired right after this race (like her irl horse did, so it wasn't really Shirogane doing it, but it's funnier this way).

I'd say that her support card is a Guts card loaded to the max with energy draining events that give stat increases for stamina and a whole bevy of red skills
Definitely a Guts or Wits card with a lot of energy draining an mood down events that give a lot of stats. Though the part that would make her card very valuable is having Failure Protection.

It's still funny how much of a non-starter all these rivalries are. They're all so passionate and Shirogane's just like, their grandma. "That's nice, dearie. Now, make sure you don't hurt yourself playing and wash up before supper."
Heh, Steady trying to be a cool sempai while granny Shiro is just nodding along with her adorableness.
To be fair, Shirogane does enjoy the challenge of running against them to some degree, it just doesn't have the same kind of emphasis in her mind since while they are obstacles between her and an even bigger paycheck, she's not really under any big stress so she isn't going to develop a serious grudge. That and having life experience from other lifetimes means she does have a bit of old woman attitude.

The Trainers are going to hate Shirogane's run for all the G1 races +extras, this will set a precedent, the other Umas in her school might try to race them with her.

And a feat like that would have Younger Umas wanting to do the same years later, specially if she keeps running them each year.
Yeah, some of them are going think Hana has gone nuts, then they realize she was moderating Shirogane and end up in the unfortunate position of having to talk down their overenthusiastic and extremely competitive trainees.

And yeah Shirogane´s favorite surface is concrete, she's probably really used to run it, under any weather rain, snow, blizzard and typhoon, because the Pierogis must be delivered no matter what!!
Shirogane Suzuki at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics, pulling in a sub 1 hour umathon.

It's funny how Shirogane treats her racing as a side job/stepping stone when she's literally a once-in-a-generation talent with the work ethic to excel even further. Of course, she's surrounded by an entire generation of generational talents and freak-of-natures so it's difficult to tell how extraordinary she is.
Yeah, Shirogane would kind of be like the Secretariat of Polish-Arabian horses in regards to having ridiculous speeds compared to others of 'breed'. On the other hand, the Golden Generation has some real crazy talents too, so she doesn't look as impressive initially, since she doesn't shine as much in the shorter races younger runners are filtered through.

Speaking of impressive horses, Steady's going to be going up against the dirt monster Abukuma Poro, who irl went [32-23-3-3]. Granted, most of those wins were not graded, but they did win the Tokyo Daishoten.

Hmm, while I don't think Tanya necessarily cares too much about honor unless it benefits her... She does care about the order around cultural traditions and the respect due from one to another.
Yeah, Tanya/Salaryman doesn't care very much about the spirit of the law, and doesn't necessarily respect the letter of the law, but they are very concerned about how adherence to the law/customs affects the behavior of people towards/around them.

How old is she? Cause japan's age of drinking is pretty high at 20.
How old is Steady Distance anyway? I'm assuming that umas start their junior year of competition at the same age they start their freshman year of senior high school, which is fifteen, and she's been racing for a little over four years at this point, so... she's what, nineteen going on twenty?
Yeah, she's around 19, which is too young to drink legally, but Shirogane knows pretty well that Steady can get her hands on alcohol if she wanted to. So legally, Steady is pretty much and adult, and there's a bit of weirdness with umas graduating school, since I imagine the greater part of them don't go into tertiary education since they have less propensity towards that kind of thing and have shorter lifespans. Not to mention if you are moderately successful as a runner, staying in the racing academy can make you a fair amount of money still.

I'm really happy with how clearly the character voices come out in this story.
Glad to hear it! That's something I try for, since well, irl most people do talk a bit differently from everyone else, and as a writer, if I have to deal with a large cast of characters who often congregate in groups of three or more, it's very helpful to have them speak in distinct manners, so when they are talking as a group, I don't have to keep highlighting who said what.

To be fair, she's the only one who's got that lazy slacker vibe to her, it might be harder to tell if it was Dober instead. I guess all I'm saying is the characters feel like the characters and have their distinct voices. It's nice.
Yeah, it's a bit trickier when the group of people have more similar speaking patterns, which was sort of the case with Shirogane, Air Groove and Dober, since they're all a bit more formal and articulate (although it remains hilarious how low-key chuuni the three of them are).

It's at times like these when I question my sanity. Animating this has got to be some kind of special torture, where do you even start.
I wonder how much the computer side of CyGames curses the design side of the company. Meanwhile the design side: "Alright, so how are we gonna make another Shadai outfit again?!"

A WIP of how Shiro's win screen might look, hat included!
She has her hat back, hooray!

I'm undecided on the position of the sword, and what it'll end up covering.
The animation would probably be a fencing salute, something like in this video.

sword_salute.png
Very nice! Though we won't see this G1 animation for awhile.

She does the salute, sheathes her saber and starts walking off, kinda like Symboli Kris S.

I wonder how those responsible for organizing the race lineups feel about her? She's great technically, but also not likely to win the shorter races. Plus she tends to place... Idk, with up to 18 umas it'd be crazy to throw all the best umas into it, especially given how damaging it tends to be for their legs. So gate filler? Stat check Uma?

How is stuff like this decided anyway?

Something like that could be called The Iron Uma's achievement, with the extra gold, silver, and bronze, versions if you not only manage to race them but also get the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in them.

I can already imagine the trainers this year telling them that they can run some races or the other but not all of them like Shirogane.
Stunnigly and funnily enough the only one who can manage to come close to That "Iron Uma" title would be Haru Urara the Unforeseen Rival who would run almost as many races, but raise to prize placements only on dirt tracks.
I expect and Want to see a moment where on some dirt track before the race Shiro is playing with her sword again, making METAL sounds and Haru is Just like : "Nin nin! Let's have some fun!" and then they both pressure all the other racers with terryfying auras

Demon of Distance is cool, but it still like the Pale Horse allusions better. :p

Also fingers remain crossed that someone whos familiar with european warhorses shows up at some point like you put that in a race?! *facepalm*
