On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

I don't see Shirogane retiring anytime soon, I can see her taking interest in trainig younger Uma's and maybe a side job as a trainer, with another side job as a restaurant owner maybe a chain restaurant owner. (I got this image of one called Umaas, instead of Hooters)

She can hire retired racers and maybe young Umas who didn't made it, to be the Waiters/Hostes, taking advantage this world love for Umas.

While still racing several years past other Umas prime (her careful efforts to maintain her Health by not giving her 120%, just racing every week) because its still profitable and she enjoys it, even if eshe denies it most of the time.

One doesn't needs to take it too seriously, in this world and even if she's not obsessed with the victories, doing something that she likes and finding new ways to make more money and still keep in contact with some of the crowd she likes; I think it was said before for her this life is like a vacation, and she's doing her best to enjoy it.

Good point. I'll pretty much read anything Wrand has Shirogane do. As long as it's written well as to why she does things

So I think that there does need to be something else, if her career is going to be actually long and not cut short from lack of motivation.
What if she realizes that its only when she's running and manages to get a these magic sfx flashes that she can tap into magic again. That her dream goes from make her make her grandparents retire to make money and fly with her magic?

Sadly, while we've seen her using some very minor magic, Shirogane doesn't have a computation orb, so outright flight and honestly probably all of her major spells are impossible in this life, with such specifically called out in both chapters 2 and 19.

The wind pulled at her face and ears, her blood pulsed through her veins, and she felt her muscles strain as she put them to greater use than she had before in this life, reaching a speed she was quite sure she had never been able to manage on foot in her past lives, but still felt sluggishly slow from the lingering instincts of the Soldier.

That was ridiculous. Shirogane could not fly, but that did not change her sense of inadequacy.

A flicker of memory, and she parted the air before her, the wind lowering just slightly, not enough for her to gain much speed, but enough that her passage was easier.
Had she still the Soldier's magic it would not be a grave issues, but alas, no such mechanism existed in this new world, and Shirogane found herself idly running the back of the blade against the studded knuckles of her gauntlet, a shiver of delight coursing through her at the sound of steel running over steel.

And she doesn't have any impetus to ever make one. Feels like a bit too much of cheating to make racing easier like that as well.

I don't think we know if she ever uses that air parting trick ever again or if she uses it all the time.(?)
If she could, imo she would make an orb, if only to fly again.

Well, yeah, when I say flying I mean that she runs like she's flying.

I must note that what I'm talking about from now on is only speculation and what ifs. Umas has something that makes them run very fast like when anime make them get sfx to their running. In this fic OP has said that:
She would have needed a computation orb to amplify her speed enough to win the race. With her instinctive magic it does not have as significant of an effect.
This specific Wog has OP said that Shiro has magic. What if Shiro notices that when Uma gets a super run sfx its actually magic that she can detect if she's near it. That would mean that she would seek to experience whatever trance or super running Umas get when they get sfx.

So Shiro would want to experience that feel of magic and she might be able to leverage that towards running so it feels like she's flying.

That she still has her magic in some form or the other means that she's a shoo-in for a Halloween version, since she's already scary enough to fit in a haunted house, no training required. And if we're talking unique skills, then for me her Halloween version unique skill should be called Flight of the Wildhunt. It just fits: she's chasing the feeling of flight by hunting down those in front of her, she's terrifying for other umas to be around and the sight of her is an ominous portent of things to come. (usually gate crashes and downhill accidents as such, perhaps even the occasional post-race retirement). The joke gets even better if her Halloween creature theme is biblically accurate angel. Curse you, Being X! Even only if it is to give you a reason to turn the uhlan into a winged hussar.

I am like 99% sure that the sfx is a visual flourish to make the race seem more epic in the anime, not an in-universe glowing aura.

From an in universe standpoint it's supposed to show that the uma has reached "The Zone," a state where they're surpassed their physical limitations and are capable of running faster and longer than they physically should be able to. It's akin to an actual mental state that IRL athletes can reach, but resonating with typical umamusume handwavey running silliness.

>.<
I have only watched a few Uma Musame amvs. Much of my knowledge is coming from this fic. If this fic hasn't taken up what this The Zone is then I don't know it. With my description you know what I mean. Never mind that. Its not that important.

I don't think she's capable of it anyways. She was a soldier not a magical engineer.
Maybe in a setting like MHA, or other near/far future settings. She'd have lots of experience with maintenance, that'd give her the rough, and advanced 3d printing or like replicator tech would let her brute force print, try, adjust, refine, print, repeat loop to finish. Given the like 90s~ setting, probably not gonna happen here.

That depends if "maintenance" refers to hardware maintenance or software maintenance. I could very easily see the physical composition being too complex for a soldier to seriously repair wear and tear damage of, in which case beyond knowing the general shape of the device even given 3d printing technology I doubt she could reproduce it. If a computer user, whose only experience with a computer is using it and maybe figuring out how to solve simple software problems, was forced to try and recreate one from 3d printing every part of it without any sort of guide or reference, they probably wouldn't be able to do it. She might be able to print a shell that looks similar but that won't work any more than someone who 3d prints the outside of a computer casing and then tries to turn it on.

A computational orb is not a jigsaw puzzle. You can't recreate it just by copying the shape of each part, anymore than doing so for a computer would actually work.

Yeah a Computation Orb is not in Tanya's ability to manufacture. Mind you, she wouldn't strictly speaking NEED one, depending on the circumstances. Remember that the orb is there to make the magic easier to use and to make it possible to use more high level formula. Super simple stuff is still possible without it.

Computation Orbs in fanfiction is like that phenomena in manga where the protagonist knows and remembers the exactly details of everything important in the industrial revolution while never forgetting them. A little exaggerated, but y'know.

One of the common problems in a lot of Youjo Senki fanfiction where Tanya keeps her 2nd life magic, the excuse of "oh she was a tester of stuff like this under Schugel." or something like that is used to justify her knowing just enough so she can have it made in another life. Like that'd make it any easier lol.

Every fic I've read either uses some excuse for her not to need one or nerfs her a lot without one, actaully.

Commenters often try to shove computation orbs into fics with that excuse.
But what is usually done from my memory is skipping the need through new inherent abilities, inferior workarounds, or just coincidentally finding something that works exactly the same (usually by one of her orbs, usually the Type-95 coming along in some fashion). Can't really recall a fic where Tanya actually builds one herself though I don't doubt that they exist.

In the fics where she remembers how to build one, I'm fine with it because she's the kind of person that would do that actually. She is straight up pulling out the majority of WW situations from her memory and applying the lessons from them at the drop of a hat after like, 8-10 years of not even having a chance to glance at them.

That's what she does with her secondary autistic hyperfixation from the previous life. I can absolutely believe Tanya obsessively learned everything about orb manufacture out of a dozen traumas, false expectations, and residual military otaku habits.

She spent a while getting exploded by an orb made by a mad scientist after already having had the knowledge of 'safely' exploding the orb she was wearing weeks prior to that. Of people that would have the knowledge to make an orb from scratch? She's got way higher credentials than most.

Didn't she in the novel try memorizing as much research from Elenium Arms as possible from the Type95 development for when she would turncoat, or am i confused?

I mean, it's a mechanical computer. Gears and sprockets and such. Clockwork, not transistors. I figure that, as a physical thing with moving parts, it would need to be cleaned, lubricated, inspected, and maintained much like a rifle. It's easy enough to imagine a certain type of person in real life being able to reverse-engineer producing a rifle just from familiarity through handling, after a lot of time and many many failed attempts, and from there add a bit of exaggeration for anime and magic and lots of tinkering later, and I'd believe it.

The closest one I can think of off the top of my head is the Hobbit crossover, though he, in his third life as Bilbo Baggins, got a dwarf craftsman to do the actual creation. Next closest would be Quirky Retirement, a MHA third life, where she almost tinkers it up, failing to produce a 'core' that actually enabled linking it to the user's magic, but otherwise making the rest.

IIRC, most cases where she makes a new orb from scratch, it usually mentions some period of trial and error. There is also the fact gears and clockwork can be surprisingly complicated. Each gear needs three diameters, plus the number of teeth. This may be unique for each wheel. She also needs the precise arrangement of the pivot holes in each plate and bridge. It's absolutely possible, but she might not know the technical specs, as opposed to just the name of the part. In firearms, you may know the firing pin spring, the trigger spring, the mainspring or recoil spring, but how many people know the required spring length and constant for a specific firearm?

Phaelenopsis (Golden Gen Double Tiara) got announced, so we now have a Tiara Rival for Shiro AND SHES A KUNOICHI:

Haru Urara thinking Shiro is a Ninja was prophetic.

Tania Raith in a A Young Vampire's Cohabitation Arrangement builds one with help from Harry Dresden, though it still working on the magic logic of Dresden Files means it doesn't let her do anything super crazy.

Oh neat, so I don't have to worry about retconning things if what I came up with doesn't match. And we were getting quite close to the point where she would first show up too.

The Final Fantasy Tactics one had her make it, but ultimately outsourced to other people for the final production.
