On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

If worse comes to worst,

This is the first time I've seen it written this way but it seems to make sense so I had to look it up. Turns out, 'worst comes to worst' is the original spelling, while this variant is popular in the US and Australia apparently.

I imagine having Shirogane straight up fail here might be a bit unpopular, but I feel like I sufficiently telegraphed this outcome that it shouldn't come as a surprise.

I don't mind at least, and with her chain of silvers it makes sense narratively to have her dip a bit to build up motivation and such. I'm still not sure where the story can really go though, it's not like this is a Shonen where she can determinator her way to victory in short races? Well, now that I think about it there is some foreshadowing for that but it still feels like there would need to be some justification for that still.

This story is one of just two that has gotten me somewhat interested in the 'verse @WrandmWaffles

Immediately after I found and read this story I checked out another Uma story and bounced off of it. Couldn't get interested without a crossover character in familiar with. What's your second story?

The more Shirogane's [Mood] plummets, the more terrified the next race's front runners get…

because that palpable agitation on the field becomes an anger that looks to them like she really is out for their blood.

Like the hint of her being instinctively irked at the finish line, where they're all lined up near neck and neck "- It's disorderly!" (Disgraceful), but then leveraged with real fury.

The instinct there leads me to believe she'll activate some final stretch last-second Terror debuff that makes all the place-contenders flinch as one on instinct, giving Shiro the endgame advantage she really needs to beat out late surgers.

The terrifying herd instinct of a herd leader or predator snapping/barking orders that their bodies try to obey a second before their minds, breaking the focus at the very end.

And since she always has breath to spare, speaking or shouting is well within her options.

I mean I would have been more surprised if Shiro didn't place either last or second to last among the Tracen crew. I feel bad for Seiun, but she can probably qualify with a different race, and she has a good chance at the Satsuki Sho since Grass is dropping out.

That woman feels like she might be trouble later on.

"She really never gets an inside gate, does she?" Steady murmured to herself, trying to figure out the odds of that happening. The extra distance itself wasn't that big of a problem for Shiro in terms of stamina, but it did mean that it made it significantly harder to get towards the front like she needed to.

Maybe the JRA just really didn't want someone trying for both circuits. Steady couldn't say why, you'd think it would make great television!
My theories on why the JRA might not want Shiro to run in both circuits is because they can see that she does not really have a chance to win all 6 crowns so if they hype her attempt up on TV it will just end with her failing.

Also possibly while in real life foreign horse were prevented from racing in the triple crown/tiara during this time period, in universe those restrictions were loosened most likely because they couldn't justify them without blatant racism, but that doesn't mean an underlying racism of the organizers is completely gone. As seen by that Winning Live organizer lady in this last chapter.

Fair warning, the community is mixed between Potential Man memes, people being upset bc of the vibes, and the small amount of people pointing fingers at how gay Stego is towards the MC.
Yeah, basically…. By the way, currently the second one is on route there. so good luck to whoever's gonna read that next cause you're gonna read some crazy posts about their feelings.

It is interesting how often she gets outside lanes, is this supposed to show retaliation from the one organizer who's likely to disappear under mysterious circumstances?
To be fair, if japanese racing fans find out a organizer is specifically fucking with the little horse that could and they will go fucking rabid. Shiro doesnt even have to do anything other than say a few words in front of a camera and the problem will solve its self.

"Whereas your greatest achievement was accomplished on your knees."
Ok I didn't expect that from Shiro, kinda feels OOC actually. But then again she usually goes straight for the kill when fighting so maybe it is in character.

Or did Hana say this? The text implies it was Shiro but it's not clear.

Staring down a Polish Hussar who sees you as an enemy must be terrifying. Good luck to that lady.

Don't know if this is the correct translation but if so, "Don't stop the rush, we're hitting!" Seems like a very interesting thought to have as it implies a lot of things. Like who is we in this case?

Edit: Also it's cool to see Shirogane's fighting spirit/anger start to build. My general understanding of Tanya is that when that starts to happen something either completely crazy or incredible is on its way.

Shiro's immediate "I know exactly how little effort it would take to make that adjustment" to the official with a death wish was absolutely the peak of the chapter. Don't mess with the former soldier standing watch over injured comrade vibes where strong with this one. And yes Shiro finishing out of position in a race that is both against quite a few of her classmates and not to her strength is to be expected every once in awhile is not surprising and was well foreshadowed last chapter.

No, definitely in character, or at least in her head but she would totally plan your downfall during that.

It was Shiro, she was looking towards her after she said that.

Speaking of Shiro wouldn't need to lift her hands getting rid of a problem. She's smart enough to do it behind the scenes.

I mean she did to the two soldiers in the first episode well technically on accident but she did it.

I feel like Game Shiro would have a special mood below Awful and an inverse stat performance where Great has her perform like Normal. When she gets down to that special mood she would lock in like crazy; her debuffs would gain a drastically increased effect and her ultimate would evolve into a full warzone under bombardment.

She'd probably have a special green skill event to force her mood to that, probably from winning a certain number of races while at that mood. The challenge would make her career very interesting, since you'd have to work around the low Mood Effect bonuses to get a strong build.

Honestly, I think having Shirogane win here would be the more unpopular option given how her strengths and weaknesses are presented.

Sure Shirogane has worked on her weaknesses, but it's still shouldn't be enough to overcome the strengths of her peers yet who have all been working on their own weaknesses.

I'm starting to get the sense that, in order to get Shirotanya to win, her trainer needs to stop her from racing. At all.

Based on how she has all this energy to burn that she even goes out at night for extra jogs, just to help tire herself out, and how the possibility of not being ready for a race might impact her planned cushy retirement / helping the family, it might, paradoxically, just be what is needed to get her to go all out to win on a race.

Grass: -pulls out glock, chambers round- No survivors.
Taiki: "I love you shimaaaaasu!"

Has she done assassination before? Or an 'accident'? I guess she can do it with her experience with ambushing?
