On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

The problem is that it is Shirogane saying that, not a trainer or a tester. You are assuming that one of the testers told her she was slow. So far, the only person in the story who has said she was slower than an average racer is Shirogane herself and how reliable of a narrator is she?
I don't think she's just making an assumption here. She likely got told her top speed on the test, and either the trainer commented about it being below average for a racer, or Shirogane looked up average racer speed and compared her number to that number. She could also have been observing other racers taking the entrance exams, but her incident with the starting gate makes me doubt that.

Let us just remember that this is Tanya Degurechaff we are talking about here, with a new name and a slightly less twitchy personality. She is NOT known for her perfect judgement about herself. She is known for over-thinking and over-preparing for darn near everything. She is also known for underestimating her own capabilities which is why she pushed herself as hard as she did in her previous lives.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this yet, but I absolutely love that she has both ear ornaments. Because she reincarnated more than once, and her previous lives had her both male and female.

In other words, the fact that it "felt wrong" with only one is likely the same thing that leads each uma to only have one. It's a spiritual thing.

Edit: for people unaware, Umamusume ear ornaments are subtle indications of whether the reincarnated horse was a mare or stallion.

Isn't the red band around the base of the tail also a warning that the horse kicks?

I have found what Shirogane's first winning song should be:
View: https://youtu.be/zecnwqXe850

From Shirogane's point of view, it wouldn't matter what the lyrics are in Polish because no one in Japan will understand the words.

Instant fame in the Polish community for, from their perspective, the absolute balls it takes to sing that straight faced without laughing on live TV.

Given that the English translation is roughly:
"After eating your delicious soup,
I can't move my ass off the toilet
That soup had milk in it
I'm allergic to milk."
GoldShip won't be looking like the biggest troll umamusume around

Unfortunately, putting aside that her name isn't Gold Ship and her finding the lyric, her mother's the one who taught her Polish, I think, and she's not the sort who would survive the sheer embarrassment of her mother hearing about it.

The internet is forever, and she's wise enough not to underestimate Journalist curiosity.

The question becomes whether or not a tester gave her feedback at the time of testing and actually told her she was below average, or if it is just her own assumptions.

Remember we're talking about the person who describes coming in second in multiple national competitions as "average" so I really wouldn't trust their definition of "average".

Also, good trainers/teachers will find ways to push you along even if you are not actually falling behind. For example: telling you that someone else lifted x amount of weight which might be a few pounds or kilograms more than you just lifted... and unless you were right there watching that person lift that weight, you have no idea you were just lied to.
I can see some Tracen trainers telling their Umas.... "Hey, that Uma is faster than you...." just to make their Uma feel the competitive edge more. It does not necessarily mean they were actually faster.

While using death dates as a reference makes sense, Uma doesn't use that mostly because of one thing, Fate. Their irl Fate plays a large role in their current life and it even dictates their achievements in their new life. I know, it sounds silly, but its something Uma likes to reference often and also plays around (e.g. Shakur knowing she will lose the triple crown by 7cm, Suzuka feeling a foreboding sense at her irl final race, Cafe almost following her irl fate). That Fate in Uma is something that is hard to change yet its possible through the power of dreams and friendship.
And Shirogane's fate should not put her into racing, so she really has no psychic preconceptions about what her fate in racing would be. She's mostly just happy to be alive and living a carefree life, for the most part.

Carefree by her standards, at least.

Being alone ruins a lot of opportunities for her to further bond and interact with her fellow uma girls.

And from what the story so far, she ain't a social butterfly either!
This is still Salaryman/Tanya in uma form. They really aren't very sociable by nature.

That's what you have the Tactical Goldshi Kidnapping Crew for
Mostly unnecessary, since Shirogane is going to be on a trainer team, and is attending a school, which means she will have class with other students. It's not like she's going to be hikkikomori in her room all day.

  • Expressways: 100 km/h is the standard limit, though it can be lowered depending on conditions. Some expressways in Japan have a higher limit of 120 km/h.
  • Ordinary/Suburban roads: The speed limit is typically 60 km/h, unless otherwise posted.
  • Urban areas and smaller streets: Speed limits are often reduced to 40 km/h.
  • Residential side streets: These can have limits as low as 30 km/h. As of 2026, many narrow residential roads across Japan will be officially limited to 30 km/h.
For the most part, deliveries would be running in Urban areas and smaller streets, so Shirogane was mostly running around 40kph on her deliveries when there isn't much traffic. Given that Fujisawa is actually quite population dense, much of the time, moving at the speed limit would not have been possible.

Would Evil Nice Nature even be able to dent Shirogane? Her best debuffs tire other racers out, making her devastating to those that focus on speed with the minimal needed stamina for the race length. Shirogane is a Stamina monster so a speed debuff like Dominator would be more effective against her than All-Seeing Eyes or Mystifying Murmur.
Shirogane would be largely unaffected by what other racers do aside from their physical positioning and speed. In game, she probably would have a Competitive/Defiant ability where getting debuffed boosts her Guts and Acceleration or something...which would probably make her pretty meta in the game due to the prevalence of debuffs in PVP.

Shirogane can't speed up to a sprint at the last stretch as she'll effectively be sprinting the entire race.
To be fair, even a runner with Shirogane's endurance isn't really going to able to sprint the entire race on longer races, though she could probably manage that on shorter races.

Also, while its possible that Uma weight heavier than human, I doubt they actually weight as heavy as a horse considering some trainer have been able to carry Umas
There are several scenarios where differences between one weight or another would have obvious logistical effects; for example, various instances of umas driving cars or riding public transportation, stairs, ladders, walkways, or chairs without noticeable reinforcement, and so on.
If umas really did weigh similar to horses, they would have a lot of problems, especially since they would be exerting greater pressure on the ground with only two smaller feet. You'd see umas falling through walkways or decks, and probably chewing up tracks they run on. You would also not be able to put more than maybe two umas in an elevator or else it would exceed the weight limit. On the other hand, it does seems quite likely that umas are a fair bit heavier than humans...which does raise the question of how they can swim, since humans are actually kind of borderline bouyant (is this why umas have big boobs?)

The story...it writes itself
Overseas popularity potential
first generation of Polish descent...born concurrently with Polish Independence
Polish umumusume are rare due to 'historical events'
Descended from Poles who escaped the German/Soviet occupation via the help of a Japanese ambassador ie 'Sad Poles, bad Germans, bad Russians, Good Japanese'
Wearing a Polish Uhlan outfit
How is that not a PR gift?
Shirogane: "This is the only outfit I can really afford at the moment."
Her fans: "This si the best thing ever!"

Her winning concert will also probably be a Polish song she learned from her mother, since it's not like Shirogane listens to music on her own time. It would have a negative effect on her job since she has to listen to the traffic around her. Also, if she sings in Polish, the Japanese audience won't be able to catch her messing up. Then she gets a big Polish fanbase, and she has to buckle down and practice singing, to her consternation.

It's kind of a funny thought for her turning into Poland's idol horse despite not being in Poland, serving as an inspiration for the young uma population in Poland.

Shiroganes top speed, while pushing herself to her current limits is probably closer to 70kph and sustainable for 15-30ish minutes.
Her current max speed is closer to mid 50's under normal circumstances, but she can indeed keep it up for a significant amount of time. It will also increase with more training, or if circumstances result in her going into frenzy for whatever reason.

I wonder if shiro will ever compete in marathons and ultra marathons in her spare time for fun?
If there's an uma section of the Olympics, she might end up there for one reason or another.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this yet, but I absolutely love that she has both ear ornaments. Because she reincarnated more than once, and her previous lives had her both male and female.
She also has two human parents, so didn't have anyone in her immediate nearby family who would find hat a bit weird.

Isn't the red band around the base of the tail also a warning that the horse kicks?
Shirogane punches more than kicks. Which is very weird for an umamusume

I have found what Shirogane's first winning song should be:
Unfortunately, putting aside that her name isn't Gold Ship and her finding the lyric, her mother's the one who taught her Polish, I think, and she's not the sort who would survive the sheer embarrassment of her mother hearing about it.
Keep in mind that while Shirogane is half-Polish and is fluent in the language, and to some degree the culture, she still grew up in Japan, and thus would be mostly out of the loop in regards to Polish meme culture. She would probably pick on the more well-known Polish songs, like maybe:

The national anthem would probably be a bit too on the nose.

I wonder how many of them were winged hussars, also wonder if people are more aware of war horse uma, in the psychological sense, in places like America or Europe since Japan isn't that open about mental healthcare.

That doesn't mean she have to the same damn thing like in her previous lives!

She's not in a career crushing dead-end job!

spongebob-meme.gif

She's not risking her life in a brutal war either!

Why the heck must she do things in repeat!? The life that she have now is ten times more pleasant that what she previously had! WTH

I'm sorry, I know it's your story and all but isn't that going way beyond to what is canon?

Why is she going to sing stuff like that instead of the one done by many characters in the game?

So the boring route instead of the fun route, huh?

😐

I don't see why there wouldn't be an Uma section of the Olympics if in their world Uma's have always existed. The original ancient Greek Olympics probably had a day set for Uma's to do their sports too.

if you recall previous chapters, she was actually fairly popular in her middle school, despite her thinking she wasn't. Shirogane's also likely to 'build connections' (make friends) with other Umas at Tracen because it has the highest concentration of big racing names or such other things. She may not be a social butterfly, but she's not a shut-in and will probably attempt to 'build connections' with other racers.

Pretty sure you're taking it a bit too far, cause she isn't?

Like, her plan before getting Tracen-ed is to just continue on with her education locally while supporting and working in her family restaurant, which I am pretty sure not a sign of becoming an OL.

And even when she got Tracen-ed and being reserved, she still randomly reached out and just talked to other people, like that security team earlier in the chapter. Combined with her being familiar to most people in Fujisawa due to her deliveries to the point of being a nickname basis with a (?) taxi driver, this is a learned behavior. She probably won't be pushing other people away either.

Cause she isn't familiar with usual Uma Musume races custom due to being not interested in having a career in it. Now being thrown at the deep end of the pool, she isn't quite as prepared as she probably hoping for aside from the usual race stuff and may, if OP decide to do so, have to resort to something she's familiar with.

And its not like she's that unique in this regard. Oguri Cap first song is a cringy traditional dance, I think?, to the point that her bullies decided to help with her dance and music routine.

So the boring route instead of the fun route, huh?

😐
Personally, being blueballed by her race is not a fun, albeit a new, experience for me.

I mean, an Uma falls through a floor at one point and it's shown that they break shoes and track when both training and racing.

Also the boob idea is hilarious

Well it's probably not going to be a drinking song at least.
You never know, she may have been a wild one when she was younger. She may have some pretty bawdy songs remembered. Now she might not have taught Shirogane any of them, but Shirogane may have overheard them when her mom was drunk/tipsy.

"Did you seen Shirogane Oruze—uh, Shirogane's Polish Enka concert? It was so cool!"

She would probably pick on the more well-known Polish songs, like maybe:

Looked up the song.

When the world suddenly caught fire
Gdy zapłonął nagle świat

They walked through the wilderness through the sleeping forest
Bezdrożami szli przez śpiący las

The steady rhythm of young hearts
Równym rytmem młodych serc

Time marked the restless days
Niespokojne dni odmierzał czas

Somewhere there was smoke from the fire
Gdzieś pozostał ognisk dym

Dust of roads traveled, shadow of gray fog
Dróg przebytych kurz, cień siwej mgły

Only a white cross in the field
Tylko w polu biały krzyż

He no longer remembers who sleeps under him
Nie pamięta już, kto pod nim śpi

Like a thought from years ago
Jak myśl sprzed lat

Like a trace of memories
Jak wspomnień ślad

The memory of these people comes back today
Wraca dziś pamięć o tych

Which are not there
Których nie ma

The evening darkness bid them farewell
Żegnał ich wieczorny mrok

When they went into battle, when the song faded away
Gdy ruszali w bój, gdy cichła pieśń

They were coming to fight for your home
Szli by walczyć o twój dom

Among green fields, for a new day
Wśród zielonych pól, o nowy dzień

Like a thought from years ago
Jak myśl sprzed lat

Like a trace of memories
Jak wspomnień ślad

The memory of these people comes back today
Wraca dziś pamięć o tych

Which are not there
Których nie ma

Because not everyone was helped by fate
Bo nie wszystkim pomógł los

Return from the forest paths when the lilacs were in bloom
Wrócić z leśnych dróg, gdy kwitły bzy

A white cross in the middle of nowhere
W szczerym polu biały krzyż

He no longer remembers who sleeps under him
Nie pamięta już, kto pod nim śpi

A white cross in the middle of nowhere
W szczerym polu biały krzyż

He no longer remembers who sleeps under him
Nie pamięta już, kto pod nim śpi

I like how it is both appropriate in world for Shiro's mom to have taught her this and how it seemingly has relevance to Shiro personally.

Or rather Tanya.

Since she herself likely lost cherished comrades during the war. Even if she's not normally one to acknowledge such things, and those memories are faded and a lifetime past.

There's multiple layers of meaning and that's always a plus!

I imagine Shiro would be able to perform the song in a far more impactful manner than most would expect, including herself.

It's a very emotional song so even if the Japanese won't understand the words, they'll still feel the melancholy and nostalgia it evokes.

The contrast of her usual demeanor against such a passionate piece would likely enthrall her audience and increase her exotic appeal.

Might also cause some more misunderstandings about her personality and aspirations.

But such is a cornerstone to any Youjo Senki fic isn't it!

Thanks for the update as always. Looking forward to reading more!

I know this is very unlikely to her character, especially as a first song, and I dunno if that series is the same as in this universe, but the nerd in me makes a compelling demand ...

Sure, but
1)You don't do that on the first day or in assessments.
2)Lying about statistics is bad, for athletes it's VERY bad.

The original ancient Greek Olympics probably had a day set for Uma's to do their sports too.
I doubt it. Not any more than they had a section for women or slaves. I agree with about the modern olympics, but given how elitist and exclusionary the greek city-states were, I can't see them having a seperate section for horse-girls, especially when you consider their view of women.

I think assuming that cultures would have the same attitudes towards umas that they would women in general is flawed. To get anything resembling human history as we know it, you have to asssume that umas at least occupy the same spaces that horses did IRL, which means that no tribe or culture would survive without them. By the time of the Greek city-states, umas would have long been an integral part of civilization. Even if the Greeks maintained the same attitudes about human women, umas would certainly be an exception.

Fair enough, but the greek city states were as I noted quite exclusionary in general and very elitist. I'm not talking about the greek patriarchs treating Ume the same as they treated human women, just that they wouldn't treat Ume differently than they treat everyone who isn't them.

Also, now that I think about it - ancient Greece wasn't noted for it's cavalry or horsemanship, so I doubt they'd have many(or any) Ume in high social positions.
