Air Groove's longer strides were starting to make a more noticeable difference, but not as much as Shirogane expected, as while the turf was springy compared to the asphalt or concrete she was more accustomed to, the softer surface meant each footfall sent less of an impact up her legs. Even so, on the long straight, the older, more powerful runner was eating up the distance faster than Shirogane could, forcing her to take faster steps to maintain her position.
You will never come in first with those tiny legs. Guess Natie will know who's perpetual 2nd to her perpetual 3rd. Assuming you can keep up.
...
Que Tama getting irrationally pissed for no reason and Oguri asking why she stopped shoveling food into her mouth.

... actually given the rework gave Guts the addition of also increasing speed alongside stamina (so there's a legitimate Reason to choose it rather then Training the singular stat) it kinda fits now for Shiro. Although she still needs to actually keep up with everyone else.

For all that she had managed to keep up throughout the greater part of the distance run, at the end there was really no contest in regards to which of them was the superior runner.
Well... You could always go Haru and become the lovable loser?

"I don't remember you glaring at me?" Shirogane interjected, feeling a bit out of the loop. "It would have been difficult since I was behind you for most of the run."

"Hoh? You weren't intimidated at all, running against the Empress?" Rudolf hummed, walking up to Shirogane and gazing down at her curiously.
Can't intimidate someone with glares when they struggle with social cues! ...or are Autistic. Although she's just a Sociopath. Also if they're facing away from you. Immune to Evil Nature through sheer virtue of being unable to person correctly.

Is there a reason I should be scared of you?" Shirogane wondered. "Unless I do something deserving of expulsion I don't know what I have to fear from the two of you, and even then it would come from the school administration, not necessarily through you."
Eh... Apparently there's Dialogue in the Game that makes them sound like the Student Council has administrative authority. Its lead to Fan Theories that they're staff disguised as students. Personally I subscribe to this theory, they're trying to get a perspective on how student feel as students and to improve Experiences and double as security by being physically present in the crowd in the event of two Umas deciding to throw hands or something. Although it's destined to become a very literal version of the "Hello fellow kids!" Meme eventually.

"Ha! You hear that! No fear of celebrities at all in this one!"
Helps she has had a grand total of zero Interest in this sport. Probably lucky to have even heard of Rudolf enough to Know that she metaphorically flipped off whoever is in charge of Names for complaining about hers being Japanese lexiconically unfriendly.

FunFact: the Symbolis are Named for the ranch the horses are from. Wouldn't be surprised if that's a Family Name in UmaMusume. Really makes the school look like it's full of Nepotism if that's a consistent thing though. Northern Taste giving preferential treatment to GolShi from being her granddaughter or something (although Real Northern Taste was actually Point Flag's grandfather then again Umas have the Human+ package so maybe the Director is in her 90s).

"Actually, yes," Toujou-san replied, "a significant part of racing is psychological, and while there are many runners who would jump at the chance to run against a well-known racer, there are even more who might bow out of the competition in fear of being humiliated."
... She's more like Oguri Cap, she's too focused on a goal to notice things around her and doesn't really think beyond that

"Most junior students at Tracen would struggle to keep a steady pace for most of the race, and even for an experienced racer, it would burn quite a bit of stamina, especially at their top speeds," Toujou-san explained. "While yes, there will be others who can sprint faster than you, most won't be as good at preserving their stamina as Air Groove is, especially if you tire them out."
She still needs to catch up to them before they cross the finish line.

Her two seniors gave her a bemused look. "You can find film of most graded races at the library."

"Truly?" Shirogane blinked, eying Rudolf curiously. "And that is free for all students to access at their leisure?"
It's a library.

"What an odd runner you'll make," Rudolf chortled, "looking more excited at the idea of more difficult schoolwork than for competing against the best of your year."
If it weren't for the money she never would care. Also more things to heap onto the "something is wrong with this Uma" pile. All Umas love running, it's instinctive... But not this one. She runs only when motivated to.

The Student Council President vanished, her previously warm eyes hardening into an authoritative gaze, boring into Shirogane and searching for any sign of weakness. "Do you know what I find most lacking in you at the moment, Shirogane?"

Shirogane returned the 'Emperor's' gaze steadily. "I cannot read your mind; I take it you will enlighten me?" As feted as she was, a racehorse was still a racehorse.

"You do not want to win."
...
...
... amusingly this is the one time I am aware of a Fan Art that works... and I Know for a fact I don't have it nor has another else Posted it in the UmaMusume Thread.

"Having guts is rather necessary for living, after all." Losing them was fatal and unfortunately all too common in war.

"Ha!" Shirogane blinked as the president's stern demeanor vanished into the aether, the older uma's ears twitching excitedly. "Hehehe…" Then, for some reason, Rudolf broke in a fit of giggles.
She doesn't Understand Metaphor, she is blind and deaf to the world around her... Also another one I have seen the Fan Art for but don't have access to... Well, I have something similar at least, put it in the Reaction Thread:
your-fate-has-been-sealed-teio-v0-yhwek0b5jxuf1.png

Shirogane glanced at Air Groove, who had her head in her hands, looking very done with the situation.

There was a lot of food, and Shirogane ate some of it.
Much to the concern of the other ponies who now believe you to have an eating disorder on the opposite end of Oguri Cap... You're like Oguri Cap but wrong in every way that's similar!

"There are some umamusume for whom the desire to work is stronger than their desire to run," Rudolf observed, setting her cup down smoothly. "It is uncommon, but not unheard of, and usually they are of the large and strong kind. Shirogane-san seems to be more of that sort, but smaller."
IE: draft Uma. They just want to lift.

... although she reads like a shetland Uma.

"Given Shirogane's reaction to the starting sound was to immediately attack the source, it's probably better to give her her own space. Many Tracen students are probably too rambunctious or nosy for her."
If GolShi is here then her princess nature is just asking for her to becoming part of Gold Ship's unwilling entourage. Although I like to think Shiro and McQueen would get along quite well. Might even try and relax away from Gold Ship and bond over tea. McQueen might also confuse her Belief she's only supposed to eat hummie sized meals for her also easily getting fat like McQueen herself.

"What a strange way to describe schoolwork…" Air Groove grumbled, before shaking her head slightly. "At least she is fairly normal otherwise."

That may have turned out to be a slightly premature judgement.
Very. She's otherwise normal by human standards. She's anything but by Uma standards.

For more comedic reasons have the person believe their views are still correct win or lose. Tanya looking down on people and think they are objectively incorrect is funny too since her Chicago economics that she looks up to doesn't really match her actual views because of her Japanese collectivism and surprisingly democratic socialism ideas. Anyways here's the happy horse that loves to race with Tanya I can see that bothers her.

I don't recall Tanya coming even close to democratic socialism in policy outlook. If you are thinking her complaints about treating workers poorly is somehow incompatible with free market economics in general or the Chicago school in specific, then I would say you are mistaken about both of those topics and the nature of her complaints. Most of her complaining is that treating subordinates poorly is a horrible waste of resources and not in the employer's interest in her books.
As for Japanese collectivism, it really does not have anything to do with the typical collectivism as we think of it in the west, much less with socialist policies. Japan, for all of its collectivism, is known for not having great working conditions, rather its brand of collectivism actively encourages workers to sacrifice for the company. And whilst Tanya is very obviously the kind of person who embodies that, I do not think it contradicts her Chicago school beliefs.

Tanya is true capitalist, colored by her culture. If people actually knew how capitalism school of thought was supposed to function as opposed to how capitalism looks now, the differences would be enormous. I don't think Salayman is the person who would sacrifice people for the company, the opposite, actually, with how he encourages people to take proper breaks to encourage maximum efficiency, works to keep up the morale, and tells people to go to therapy. In Japan. He would definitely sacrifice others for himself tho, but only if he couldn't find a solution where everybody involved wins. He would then choose the option with the smallest collateral.

Oh I agree with you, I was more meaning that Tanya would be the kind of person to sacrifice herself on behalf of the company, in all of her lives.

The Salaryman was never "average". He came in second place in pretty much everything he ever tried his hand at, remember?
I think this is probably a bit of an exaggeration, in that Salaryman didn't really consider himself average, or necessarily was always second best at competition, but more that while he works very hard and is able to achieve results he didn't consider himself truly talented like those at the very top did.

i had an idea that Shirogane should start her own fan site early to kick start her retirement fund, where shes posts POV races and have a monthly donation system (with the hope that some people forgets to cancel the payments) and end up unknowingly being an 'Kuudere' Race Star
Starting a fan site on her own initiative would probably work fairly well, though I don't think the racers are allowed to wear race cameras, not to mention that go-pros and the like aren't yet commonly available. She might do a sort of subscriber submitted Q&A, or post recipes for some of her personally made training aids.

Tanya having a genuine smile on her face and laughing may result in her being dogpiled on by happy umas.
It just as likely would make them run away in fear.

so I feel there will be a dissonance between her peers' knowledge of races (often focused on recent and popular races, and more about the thrill and excitement) and Shiro's (who can be just as interested in a decades-old, minor race and a new, heavily-covered race, depending on which one she considers more useful in studying)
Yeah Shirogane's race discussion points would largely be technical, since for the most part she doesn't really feel any particular excitement seeing someone pull off a win aside from respect or admiration for their capability. The story behind the run largely isn't important to her in most cases.

Just put her up against a communist.
Considering most the horse girls were racehorses, I'm not sure there's a communist amongst them, the closest thing might be some umas professing to love sharing.
Yeah, given the competitive nature of racehorse umas, it seems very unlikely that they would find the idealization of equality to be appealing, since their whole drive in life is to prove themselves better than others in a highly competitive field.

Aside from racehorse umas, most umamusume in more modern time would be sports or labor class, with the former being very competitive and thus not typically inclined towards that sort of politics, while the latter has historically been skeptical if not dismissive of communism, since most laborers don't really like having to do extra work to pick up others' slack, especially not when this would be considered appropriate ideologically speaking.

There's also the fact that the communists tended to kill most of their umamusume population for being genetic bourgeois.

Now, if some crazy threatens the school, they had better hope security gets them before Shirogane does.
It seems like Tracen does a pretty good job of keeping stalker away. But if any of them try something on one of the students living off campus there's a good chance the intruder would go missing, never to be found again.

Gamblers would love her consistency
Eh, it depends on the gambler, since the bookies would tweak the odds so the payout from betting on Shirogane getting onto the podium would be quite low. Part of the thrill for gamblers is the risk of losing big in the chance to win big, so a steady bet isn't necessarily the most exciting for some of them.

Eternal Third Place Nice Nature feels an unexplainable affinity with Shirogane she can't understand
They both find Rudolf's puns funny.

Not sure if this would really work outside of a gag omake, but imagine what would happen if there was a novelty hypnotist performance in the area, and Shirogane's comrades convince her to give it a shot to put her mindset in a drive to win. Only it works a bit too well, and they see just how dangerous a truly motivated Tanya can be.
I find it unlikely Shirogane would ever try such a thing, even if pressured to. But it would probably make her incredibly violent. Releasing her control has consequences.

Anyways here's the happy horse that loves to race with Tanya I can see that bothers her.
Lmao, the barbed wire behind the statue fits pretty well.

You know who else also collected a lot of silver until they actually won a G1 on their last ever race? Stay Gold. :D
Who's actually about the same height as Shirogane. Her eternal rival in shortness!

With Shiro not being much of a racer herself mindset-wise, she could look into the trainer career track, learn stuff from Toujou-sensei, graduate from Tracen either double degree as racer and trainer, or enter some kinda trainer academy?
Shirogane would theoretically be an effective trainer for certain kind of personality, but overall she's probably too intense for most umas to handle. I imagine her support card (which would be Guts) is a very powerful one in terms of the stats and skills it gives, but many of the card events cause large energy expenditures and cause mood drops in exchange for large stat increases or skill points.

Uma races have a lot of betting associated with them. What if Shirogane's family starts to put money on her as a show of support, and Tanya decides she has to win to protect their finances?
It might be of questionable legality to do something like that. Cygames has said that betting on races isn't a thing in the world, but I find that to be very unlikely, given that betting is kind of half the reason horse racing is still a thing in the first place. Her family isn't really the type inclined to do that kind of thing, but there are quite a few people in Fujisawa who would bet on her.

I'm watching the anime and most of the way through the second season right now, and I have to say, Team Spica members sure do get badly injured a lot. Like, often enough that I have to wonder why people aren't asking their trainer some hard questions. I wonder if Shirogane will ask them.
It seems like Spica takes more of the free-spirited umas, especially the type that will push themselves really hard into the zone and thus puts strain on their bodies. Though yeah, Shirogane might have some questions for the trainer since she is likely to be pretty good terms with Special Week.

like handing one of her flavorless gel packs to oguri and everyone watching oguri refuse to eat and panic.
Oguri: "This doesn't taste very good."
Shirogane: "That doesn't matter if you eat it fast."
Oguri: "Hmmm..." Nom
Oguri latter: "I feel a bit full. Can you give me more?"

Really makes the school look like it's full of Nepotism if that's a consistent thing though.
I mean...Team Rigil are in charge of almost all the important student roles, with the Student Council and Dorm monitors being on the team...though it seems most are in the pseudo-retirement stage.

Eh... Apparently there's Dialogue in the Game that makes them sound like the Student Council has administrative authority.
Yeah, it does seem like they are basically former students/racers moving into the teacher role in the administrative sense as well as mentoring more informally. Still looks pretty funny for one team to have so many members in student government roles.

All Umas love running, it's instinctive... But not this one. She runs only when motivated to.
Shirogane does, in fact, enjoy running, but not the running in and of itself. Pursuing a goal while running is more of what she enjoys.

Not to bring too much irl stuff into it, but yeah, having collectivist tendencies doesn't inherently make one socialist. Japan, as with many East Asian cultures, are quite clannish, in the sense you are expected to work hard and put on a good face to honor your family/company, with the company you work for fitting the role of the clan for a significant number of modern Japanese people. It's part of why many Japanese companies primarily hire young people and expect them to stay for most of their lives, and why being fired or losing your job can be psychologically crushing.

If you apply this cultural background to an adherent of the Chicago School of Economics, which is characterized by the idea that individuals should be free to exchange goods and services, with the assumption that for the most part, people are rational and will aim to reach mutually beneficial results, it can theoretically work fairly well if the people involved actually do have the mindset that they want the other person to do well too, since that would benefit the group overall, but obviously there are plenty of people who are happy to screw over others in pursuit of personal gain.

The whole thing about working conditions or plight of the proletariat being oppressed is actually addressed in most ideologies to some degree, and aside from the more Social Darwinist ideologies, most have some kind of concept that there should be some of proper treatment, whether because happy workers are more productive, it's what God says to do, or the proletariat must be freed from their chains.

There is, however, a lot of difference in methodology, with what makes one socialist being the idea that the solution should specifically be done through the state since that is the only entity that can be trusted with this kind of work as it lacks a profit motive (theoretically but not in reality). In some cases adherent of one ideology cannot comprehend how other worldviews actually do seek similar ends to them because their logic is too ideologically foreign, especially when it results in very different things in regards to what is 'good for the working class'. Like a communist would say that a worker with good living conditions in a capitalist system is still oppressed because they do not control the means of production, while a religious fundamentalist might criticize a worker commune in the communist sense for being spiritually negligent, and a social darwinist might point at a person in a comfortable welfare situation and say they are being made weak and incompetent by it.

In Shirogane's case, she follows along with the Salaryman and Soldier in believing that while the government should have a responsibility to its people, that doesn't extend to ensuring all their needs are met, as that should be provided either by business entities or by family. Shirogane is less optimistic about people choosing to do the rational thing in looking at mutual benefit due to her past life experiences, but that experience also makes her skeptical of depending on state based solutions. She did die during the equivalent of Weimar Germany and all that chaos, after all, and in part because of the failures of the state. It's part of why she is so adamant about helping her family in this life, because they actually held up their part of the social contract, in her mind, and actually exceeded it, so she feels compelled to return the favor.

I do hope Tanya actually does win a fair amount of races against 'main' characters, something I never liked about some fanfics is when the author has them revel in mediocrity. Just like how I'm not a fan of characters who are too strong and never fail. I'm not saying she needs to be OP, win every race, and have no flaws but at the same time she should be her own force of nature. Especially if she's in a team like Rigil.

Not eventually being a monster of a racer that people would overcome, who'd likely have her own arc in the anime where team Spica has to figure out a way to overcome her would be a shame.

So, the thing about Shirogane that confuses most of the Japanese Uma is that she has the spirit of a warhorse, rather than a race horse or a work horse. Maybe one of the American Uma will bring up the possibility of Shiro being a rancher or rodeo horse. Then a European Uma could suggest the idea of her being a polo horse. Those are things that involve running and endurance that aren't races.

Well, if anything, she'll always beat Haru

No shit? Man, communism really shot itself in the foot if they got Umas to associate them with genocide.

Considering the irl US military still keeps a platoon of horses to this day (albeit for ceremonial/funeral purposes), American Umas might still point out a Warhorse background. That said, the horses I met in the army were lazy and pissed/shit in the middle of ceremonies and such, so Shirogane likely wouldn't be confused with any of them.

Then some elderly Polish people will see her, and start regaling others with stories about the Winged Hussars.

My take on it was that he was very talented at hard work rather than just a general genius. If he really, truly tried his all into something then he would take second place for sure, but no matter how hard he tried he could never match the talent of those in first. His skill at training and working hard in subjects he's not talented in let his point that work at anything he wants, but he just doesn't have the talent to reach the top.

That's why I feel he's so dismissive in taking second place and kept trying new things, not because he thought he was horrible because he couldn't reach first, but because even when he put all his effort into something he couldn't be the best. Sometimes it hurts worse failing close to a goal than from afar, and the fact he put so much effort into things to get that close made the failure hurt all the worse. I feel like it also explains his desire for a laidback position or retirement, he's not lazy or unwilling to work, he just 'knows' that no matter how much work he puts in it will never be enough, because he's not good enough.

I mean really most of the time these kinds of distinctions are besides the point in practice; because ability to self-motivate is also both a critical factor to success and a talent different people can be more or less blessed with.

Belno only uses salt when she's not feeling like adding to her collection of kneecaps.
...
I can't remember if I have the Image in the UMT, I Know I have the one where Belno's hair decorations double as brass knuckles. But Belno was carrying a boulder as big as her torso like it was a styrofoam block. So that's what you're messing with if you piss off an Uma.

"SOULMATE!" Wife #5! ... can't possibly be worse then Point Flag. No one can be worse then Point Flag. If it's wanting to keep the kids safe and financially stable she also will actually accomplish that.

Given what happened in the US with the second gambling was Legalized was the second everything got flooded with adverts from the formerly Illegal Sites that already Existed and the country pretty much instantly developed a Gambling Culture and proves just why gambling was Illegal even it being officially Illegal it's impossible to stop it. Pretty much one of those happy bubblegum world type things to claim it never happens (although people still like pointing out how NIKKE has a 13+ Rating while UmaMusume has an 18+ one).

Inb4 a Mod starts handing out Infractions like candy on Samhaín... Personal Experience with even tangentially touching this Subject says it will happen no matter who says otherwise. I have things I want to say on this Topic... But I have too many Infraction Points as it is.

and why being fired or losing your job can be psychologically crushing.
Seem to recall hearing there needs to also be an actual justifiable Reason to get fired. Job security is at maximum there. So, yeah, that guy murdering the salaryman was just a terrible person to start with not just grumpy about losing his job.

I mean consistency was one of the reasons TM Opera O was not popular from what I know people considered he made races boring

If that's real solid gold and not just plastic then it really will be like Goku's training weights if she ever takes it off, even if it was the actual Canon amount and not this stylized one. Complete with cratering the ground to. Gold is absurdly heavy. She also would end up Flashstepping everywhere.
Consistency is the Reason that Eclipse (from "Ecwipse Fwst De West Nuh'ere") had to retire. He was too good so everyone stopped betting against him leading to no one wanting to race him.

I guess that also explains why gamblers love the chaos gremlin that is Gold Ship.
You would be a fool to bet on Gold Ship. But you would also be a fool to bet against Gold Ship. He wins races when he feels like it but you're betting on how he feels not on his performance.

Depends on what version of democratic socialism because there is different versions. If we are talking ones like Norway and scandinavian then yes she is one. Even i agree that Japanese collectivism is not really socialism that's the thing with these things like how some capitalists says social security is a communist and want it out, same with different communism versions with Marxism and Maoism.

Meh i don't find her a true capitalist and many others can see that too. But she thinks she is reaching her ideal form of what she thinks what true capitalism is which would oppose what acutal ones in the real world. But whatever I really want to see gold ship interactions with her.

Guys, as interesting as it is with this discussion of Salaryman/Tanya political position, unless it become relevant in-story ala Shirogane, pls remember that rule 8 is a thing.

Oh? I thought Uma took place in 'vaguely modern day'.
I agree it probably wouldn't be allowed though. Maybe only mock races, but then that's less appealing.
I remember back when GoPro wasn't really a thing, so that's track. However, if they do exist, I would argue they're more likely to be approve, considering the level of customization and freedom the racers have over their uniform.

in the anime Umas are always shown to use cord phones from what I remember so it's at least before cordless phones

No, they have smartphones too. They just always use speakerphone. Smartphones were already common use in Cinderella Gray and they continue in the main anime. Usually a video call with Suzuka.

We know that Uma race courses can handle crowds bigger than any IRL stadium was built for. 150,000 spectators at Oguri Cap Vs. Tamamo Cross. Just going by that, I'd say that comparing it to the World Cup might be an understatement.

We also know that there are regional racing academies that serve the same age bracket as Tracen, they appear to be treated like community colleges, except dedicated solely to racing. Those racers can become locally famous, too. Those are pretty good indications to me that even minor league racers can make enough money to justify a stint in racing even if they don't make a full career out of it.
That's fairly normal for RL racetrack crowds.
Race tracks can accommodate much larger crowds than stadiums.

The larger distance the track is, the more people you can theoretically have 'track side'.

You know that actually makes me think; Jungle Pocket's past as an outlaw road racer implies the existence of organized uma rally races, and madmenfine spectators who appreciate closeness to action.

Honestly, I kind of hope Shirogane learns the warhorse history of her Uma ancestors, Uma World's European history sounds wild. Oof, commies and fash double teaming Poland is probably the reason she's the only Uma in her family. Though considering Uma physical abilities, having a unit of Uma Musume would be a lot like having a unit of super soldiers.

Inb4 Cygames has the balls to make an Uma war anime. It'd be peak.

in theory you could just do a weird extremely long microphone addon
Umas also do have specialty headsets so maybe one of those Bluetooth things. Although earbuds would be easier. Those have been around since, like, the 80s. They just weren't cheap till the 2000s with Bluetooth ones being Post-2010s and the bulky ones are still more common because of comfort. Then again cordless phones have also been around for a really long time and still actively used so corded phones really aren't indicative of the time period. Guess the Setting can just be summarized as a "20 Minutes Into The Future" thing.

Also seem to recall seeing some Joke stuff on the UmaMusume Reddit Thread of an Uma smartphone being this looong bar.

They were cowardly enough to Retgone the Queendom of Ireland so Fine Motion is now just a foreign student I doubt they ever will do that.

With the Irish Ume also reveals that history is bit different too since Ireland is still a Kingdom and wasn't colonized.
