On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

Skill "battle face:" Like Curren-chan's Intimidate, but for long races.

Really amusing how Shirogane is so immune to intimidation that she literally doesn't comprehend it. There is legitimate threat, and there is harmless. Nothing in between.
I feel "Stoic" would be a better skill name. But seeing as I haven't played umamusume I'm pretty sure that name is already taken lol.

The only politics that should seriously come up in an Uma Musume story are if the power of friendship is considered doping, who is best Uma, and whether or not certain characters are Umas.
I don't think that counts as doping, since that is considered part and parcel of being a Uma Musume and theoretically something other Uma Musume can achieve.

I would KILL for Shiro-chan to play ball
Be like the Fan Art I've seen of MMB and Tama.
Rule 2 Compliance: has yet not to go to the same Thread on the NSFW Side.

Guys..? The next threadmark button disappeared... Mods!? Somebody please fix this!

Joking aside, I'm fully caught up now and I am very excited for the next update. That was such a fun read. I hope other umafics are this good.

But even then, she's actually got enough skill that she could feasibly win a race without really locking in

I can picture her and Golshi casually walking off, not even winded after a race while everyone else is gasping for air.

Given what happened in the US with the second gambling was Legalized was the second everything got flooded with adverts from the formerly Illegal Sites that already Existed and the country pretty much instantly developed a Gambling Culture and proves just why gambling was Illegal even it being officially Illegal it's impossible to stop it. Pretty much one of those happy bubblegum world type things to claim it never happens (although people still like pointing out how NIKKE has a 13+ Rating while UmaMusume has an 18+ one).
I'd say something about how partial nudity not really being a big deal but...

There is a not- insignificant amount of blood and dismemberment in Nikke. Heck, the most recent Event had Character death and had several popular characters get litterally torn apart on screen.

Seem to recall hearing there needs to also be an actual justifiable Reason to get fired. Job security is at maximum there. So, yeah, that guy murdering the salaryman was just a terrible person to start with not just grumpy about losing his job.

It's actually pretty hard to get fired in most corporate jobs in Japan. Because if you get fired, it also reflects poorly on the person that *hired* you. The person doing the firing tends to take a reputational loss as a consequnce.

Depending on which version of YS you are looking at, the dude misses work frequently, and doesn't perform while he's *at* work (over an entire economic quarter, he missed something like a third of his work days if I understand the text correctly.), or He's missing a lot of work and was caught with drugs on company property.

Also, From what I've read- Japans traditional corporate culture is actually starting to break down. Apparently, their Millenials don't give a crap about company loyalty and will glady jump ship if offered a better deal- something that their boomer generation complain about a lot.
It's also pretty common for them to skip out on after-work social gatherings (which generally boils down to drinking parties.)

Certain, hyper competitive fields are still meat grinders though- Like Mangaka

I think this is probably a bit of an exaggeration, in that Salaryman didn't really consider himself average, or necessarily was always second best at competition, but more that while he works very hard and is able to achieve results he didn't consider himself truly talented like those at the very top did.
In the LN the salaryman reminisce about how often he only comes up as 2nd or 3rd on NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETITION, physical and nonphysical, and concluded that he will never be good enough to be some top level performer. That's why he choose to be an HR manager.

The thing is, it's heavily implied that he basically is the 2nd or 3rd best in the nation without long and dedicated training. Basically without any focused and long term training he have been trouncing most of the competition.

He definitely does have a wonky notion of self worth and value. He basically think if he's not the best of the best, it means he's mid. Ignoring how little effort he needed to reach that spot.

That reads like a less Egotistical Doctor Doom. The guy who's second best in the universe at EVERYTHING in Marvel... and we KNOW how overpowered and absurd that guy is.

Fwiw the salaryman isn't like, super strong or super genious kind of person. But he is actually really talented at everything he does. He's also apparently a well liked HR manager too, something that should be an impossibility.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Doom is better than Reed if he bothered to use magic to the fullest to trounce Reed. But he's too much of an egoistic ass to do that.

His Ego is often... well I wouldn't say justified but definitely understandable considering all the absurd stuff he pulls on the daily.

Salaryman has Cid Kagenou syndrome.
An pre-Isekai life where they think they're a mob character but they're actually an absurd, cryptid-like existence for everybody around them.

Expect like opposite personality of one having chuunibyou fun, thinking its all fake while the other one is serious and all professional and treating everything a real pontienal problem.

Considering the irl US military still keeps a platoon of horses to this day (albeit for ceremonial/funeral purposes), American Umas might still point out a Warhorse background. That said, the horses I met in the army were lazy and pissed/shit in the middle of ceremonies and such, so Shirogane likely wouldn't be confused with any of them.
I don't think the US military uses Thoroughbreds for that purpose though.

Anyway, I think Shirogane probably could get either an ult or a gold skill for killing intent. Seeing as she actually has been in a war, and one that has been way bloodier than more modern ones.

I hope she doesn't get a killing intent based ult, something that fits more into this life would be better, like an early retirement based one haha!

Ok so Tanya here due to her small stature can't gain a great top speed due to smaller strides but honestly I think her acceleration would be insane especially for any uphills since one other thing I think she has is a nice amount of strength.

Also how injury prone is Tanya? Because idk if it's possible with magic but can she reduce the strain that comes with using that much power? If it is possible I'd like to imagine her skill is something along the lines of stomping her foot down hard enough to push off faster. It also makes it terrifying for anyone behind her since all you'd hear are loud BOOMS from how hard she's stomping.

Also for motivation it's really hard to pinpoint something that will make her want the number one spot, I can see her being fine with any spot high enough to earn money + recognition for any future endeavours but not enough to go for Number 1. Maybe she's given some sort of statistic graph created by Toujou showing that more wins = better retirement. Due to having a Cousin possibly similar to Tanya I can see her understanding Tanya better than most.

I'm not too sure about that evaluation; despite being tiny Narita Taishin is one of the best "gone to plaid" Uma. Seeing one with the correct build in a CM lobby is terrifying, because they just tear past everyone on the final corner despite being on the outside.

So Shirogane could be quite similar. Keep in mind she's currently only trained informally, on a surface she isn't used to, and running for a distance that's notably short for her.

Like her current ideal race would be a 6500m heater race (archaic and long as hell) through an urban environment (extremely harsh to run mentally and physically). It's the sort of thing that would most Tracen students would categorize as an entry for a thought experiment on the most sick, twisted, and brutal races conceivable; not something one of their peers could complete.
