On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

She sprinted for basically a full kilometer. So far she's working off of strategies that her classmates and trainers worked on, and part of it is that psychologically Shirogane doesn't really like being the front runner because those are much more likely to be killed during a charge.
Some other umas might see that as underhanded while Shirogane just views it as an effective tactic.
Shirogane again does not realize how intimidating she could be.
I'd say she isn't beating the War Horse throwback allegations but that would require someone to make the connection in the first place.

It is a little ironic since her low top speed means she would do better pace setting as a front runner. Most races have a slower pace to conserve energy for the final spurt but if your front runner goes ham, your accel better be above average or you won't catch up. I would imagine she has some difficulties getting to the lead in the early race but if the front runner isn't faster than Shiro for the mid race she'll overtake then like what happened with Seiun. Of course, if you're a high tier horse you can catch up and overtake so long as your stam holds up. I can see that the longer the race, the more beneficial it is for Shiro style of running.

She's small like a fairy, and white haired.

Argent Fairy. With Argent being one of previous life moniker and Fairy from her callsign

And it would be funny if her ult is just choke full of religious iconography, complete with church bells ringing, golden light, halo, angel wings, a choral, etc

Oh that's nasty, Shiro is debuffer that sap your stamina and make you falter too. Possibly make you rushing or late start.
Her high stamina also helping her a lot with her debuff build.
If it in game, she will be popular in CM.
Shiro and Nice Nature becoming debuff buddies intensifies.😁😈

I found it funny the race commentator kept mangling Shiros choice of race name the entire time due to not knowing how to pronounce it. :D
It's nonsensical, actually. Japanese writing doesn't work that way. You might not know how some Kanji are read, but there's never any confusion about pronunciation.

Shiro the Stamina Queen. Placing top 5 consistently with maybe a win here or there in the mediums but utterly dominating the long races would be a fun niche to carve out.

She's going to rob someone of a triple crown at the Kikuka Sho isn't she.
I can imagine her really stealing the Kikuka Sho from someone from literally keeping pace with the people in front and forcing them to drain their stamina early. Same with the other long races.

She's gonna be the "psyops horse", isn't she? Trashing her opponents mental states by making devastating comments mid-race at a dead sprint with a demented smile. Her opponents hit with the one-two punch of the commentary itself and the thought of "how the hell does she have the breath to trash-talk while running this hard?"

Maybe get the announcer to quote revelations 6:8 when announcing her. "And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and [her] name ... was Death, and Hell followed with [her]."

Most kanji characters have at least two pronunciations. You're probably thinking of kana.

Which is still not relevant, because her name isn't written in Japanese, it's written in Polish.

I think my only problem with it was it there was no real stakes for the reader since anyone would realize that you weren't actually going to let Shiro win outside of practice occasionally for now, and even then the way she is I can't ever see her even placing top 3 in something like Arima Kinen or any other race of a similar nature much less some simple tryouts.

Not knocking your writing or anything the overall story and interactions are great, but you've written her to be a slower uma with absurd stamina in a setting where speed matters the most for the majority of races, so I can't really see her actually winning anything that matters without it not making sense or without you introducing a brand new tourny set for cross country or long distance races where her skill with urban running will really take off.

In a way you've kinda messed yourself up until Shiro grows into a faster racer otherwise her only wins will come from intimidation and 'debuffs', not from anything that shows her hard work paying off which is unfortunate because she works harder then anyone else in her class from what I'm seeing so far.

You should have her seniors from Rigil kidnap her for a month or two and really put her through her paces so she has a legitimate reason to be faster, or put her back against the wall in some way so she's forced to break her limits.

"An impressive trick," Shirogane complimented her classmate as they approached the finish line.

To her surprise, Sky stumbled a step.

"Oh no! Did Seiun Sky trip?!"
Sky was just surprised that Shirogane was able to hold a conversation while sprinting. Just imagine, there you are, trying as hard as you can... Then the person neck and neck with you throws you a random compliment without breaking stride or sounding out of breath. That'd throw most people off their game...

The different readings of kanji are different syllables, not different pronunciations of the same syllables, so even if they decided to put some fancy Kanji on it it wouldn't result in that kind of pronunciation difficulty. It doesn't really matter though, because it would be written in katakana, just like all the other Uma loan word names are. If they went with the highly unlikely choice not to, it would have furigana to show the closest Japanese pronunciation, because that's what they do with stuff that is expected to be difficult to read.

I dont know why it took until this chapter for me to realize that shiro can very much become the "villain/heel" of her career. Not in the sense she would steal victory from those who deserve it, like it was with rice shower, but just in how she acts and behaves from an outside perspective. That's gonna be fun.

I mean that has always been the case with Tanya previously, even the people on her own side of the war were genuinely convinced she was a jingoistic battle hungry psychopath.

Even with a phonetic guide, some phonemes literally cannot be correctly pronounced by speakers of some languages without extensive practice. The brain simply doesn't know how to make the specific combination of mouth, tongue, and throat movements to produce the desired sound. It's one of the reasons for the stereotypical Chinese/Japanese R/L confusion, as well as the difficulty most Westerners have in learning to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently. A good example is the common Chinese surname "Xu", which will almost always become "Su", "Zu", or "Shu" when attempted by English speakers.

Yes, she has a rendering of her name rendered as katakana in her registration, but the announcers do actually try to say racers' names.
"Didn't some announcers complain about Symboli Rudolf's name?" her mother chimed in. "And she told them to shove it?"

"...True." Toujou-san murmured, scratching out something on a notepad before turning it over to show to them. "Is this katakana correct for 'orzelr'?"

"That should work."

"I will register you as such, then. They may inquire about the use of a foreign word, but your Polish heritage should be acceptable enough of an explanation."
I suppose some lazy types will just say "Oruzeru" or however the katakana reads.

But That Doesn't Mean They Can Swim

"Are those…?"

One of her ears rotated towards the loudly whispered conversation among another row of lockers.

"Yeah…they're the class A runners."

Shirogane flicked her gaze briefly over towards the whispering pair, noting a wine haired uma with a leaf wreath around her right ear conversing with a pink haired one wearing green rimmed glasses, of all things.

"I hear Seiun Sky's really strong," the wine uma whispered, the hand covering her mouth failing to block out her voice entirely. "She dominated her middle school races."

"Yeah, I heard that too," green glasses sighed. "We're so toast."

"Hey, it won't be too bad if you get second."

"Do you really think we can beat umas from class A? I don't know anything about the other two."

"I'm pretty sure they're foreigners."

"Oh. Yeah, we're definitely toast."

It was about time for her and Sky's run, so Shirogane stepped out into the lane in between the lockers.

"Hey, don't give up so easily!"

"Why did we have to be in the same heat as class A?!"

"Fear not," Shirogane offered to the two nervous umas. "We aren't all in the same heat." Grass was in the following heat, so they wouldn't all be running together.

"Ahh!"

"Where did you come from?!"

This did not seem to assuage their fears at all, almost leaping out of their skin from Shirogane moving a few meters unnoticed.

Announcer: "It's a crisp September day here on Sapporo turf. This is the Tancho Stakes Open, 2600 meters. The runners are entering the gate now."

Orzel: (ᗜ ˰ ᗜ)

Newjacks: "Why do I hear phonk music?"
Oldheads: "Ah shit, it's another one of those."

(I'm sure it's been noticed by people in the world who pay attention; some girls just got a Spark you don't see anywhere else.)

This is true. But in my defense I forget I'm reading a Umamusume/Youjo Senki crossover half the time.
What with a lack of murders, war, and cursing Being X for her misfortune. This is probably the most peaceful life I've ever read involving Tanya.

I see your point, but I think we should let the author cook first, it's not like they need to stick to umamusume canon with only the NASCAR ahh races, afaik some irl horse races are more complicated than that with hurdles and whatnot. You mentioning cross country, hell yeah I think she'll excel in uma triathlon, Iron Uma or Norse Uma shenanigans

The Japanese written language doesn't include any phenoms that can't be pronounced in Japanese. They are renderedinto the closest Japanese equivalent. All of the loan word Uma names receive the same treatment. The announcer should have no more or less trouble reading her name than any of the rest.

It's not a matter of being lazy. The announcers aren't there for the racers. They're there for the audience, so they'll use the names that the audience will be able to recognize and connect with. Everyone in Japan will use the katakana readings, and there's really no reason they shouldn't.
