Prologue: Once a Day

A man opened his eyes. The light from his window was dull, and obscured through the blinds. Long shadows filled his bedroom, and his bed creaked as he rolled over on it. An empty bottle of beer rolled off his bed and clattered to the floor, its glassy thud resounding loudly in his ears as it struck the polished wood.

It clattered into several other bottles that had fallen in such a way earlier.

He blinked, and his long blonde hair obscured the hazy view of his dark bedroom. Letting out a long breath, he slowly began to return to the real world. His dreams quickly escaping his mind. He turned his head upward, and the dull white terrier dog on the ceiling of his bedroom stared back at him, it's distaste of his actions quite clear, giving him a foul taste in his mouth.

He let out a soft growl from deep in his throat.

"Mind your own business." He groaned out, slowly sitting up and removing his beer stained sheets that looked like they hadn't been washed in over a month.

The sound of a loud robotic voice outside his window was quite annoying, and must have been what woke him up.

"Your delivery is here." It said in a monotone loud male generated voice.

He let out an unintelligible grumble and rolled off his bed, thudding to the floor, his face splashing in a pool of expired beer.

"Your delivery is here sir." The robot repeated undeterred. This time sending a free arm to tap on the window loudly.

Tap Tap Tap Tap Tap.

"I'm coming." The man groaned, and he rolled over, slowly getting to his feet. He rose up, his stained white t-shirt barely what one could call white as it desperately hugged his large gut, barely reaching his blue sweats.

The man took a shaky step, barely able to stand straight.

"Arf Arf." His small white terrier barked from across the room, looking down on him from it's spot upside-down on the ceiling.

"Shut up you stupid mutt." He growled, kicking aside two bottles in his path, eventually making it to the window and opening it with a huff of exertion.

"Arf Arf." The dog continued, not caring at all about his attempted dismissal. It dropped down to the ground and walked up to him, it's eyes in a inky black film, covering them completely.

"SHUT UP!" He shouted, taking the plastic bag from the robotic drone that flew away afterwards.

"Arf Arf Arf." The dog continued, running up to him and biting his ankles. However, its tiny jaws could not break through the thick sweatpants, only serving to annoy him more.

"Shut it!" The man growled, kicking the tiny dog across the room, where it slammed into the wall silently. However, it didn't yelp in pain or seem injured and surprised at all.

"Is this what you've come to while I've been gone Bob? Kicking little dogs?" The dog said in a disapproving thick and heavy tone that one might hear from a serious heavy voiced middle aged English man.

The dog burst into black strings of shadow that twisted and swirled into a large man in a black overcoat, suit, fedora, with black as night shadowy skin and blazing red serpentine eyes. His mouth twisted into a vicious smile of rows of long razor sharp fangs that could bite space and time itself given the chance.

"I just wanted to go away and die peacefully, why did you bring me back?" The overweight blonde man asked, a dark and depressed tone in his voice.

"You know I can't let you go. Did you really think Knull could absorb me fully? As long as you exist, I will be here, making sure you don't get to die peacefully." The man in black responded in a condescending manner, tapping him on the nose with a clawed black finger like a disappointed parent does a foolish child.

The blonde man looked down to the dirty floor. Then up to the other man. Letting out a long sigh, he began.

"So, what now? Are you here to destroy this world too?" The man known now as Bob said, giving a resigned frown.

"If I wanted to do that I wouldn't have awoken you. No, I want to see you thrive. Thrive in a world where there are no Avengers. No magicians, no enemies other than those against humanity. I'll play my part from time to time, kill a few people here and there so you can come and save the day. I've stopped caring about destroying the world or remaking it after seeing you so pathetic these past months. What I want is to see you become the Sentry again. Live up to your past glory." The man in black explained with an air of joviality.

Then it extended it's right arm, waving it out towards the window.

"I'll tell you what. Since you need some motivation, I'll kill one person a day, every day at seven PM in a very gruesome or vile way until you get up off your butt and do your job."

"These Raptures aren't going to wait for you, and neither will I. Sure, you could tell yourself 'It's only one person, I can wait'. But I know you Bob. Every person that dies will weigh down on your heart. It will torment your soul. Can you really wait so long? Can you really let them die?" The man in black asked a rhetorical question, his smile widening, his glistening fangs flashing in the low light.

Then he leaned close to Bob, his putrid breath washing over Bob's face.

"Just to add the icing on this little cupcake, I'll take my first kill right now. There's an old lady next door. Every night, her daughter comes over at eight PM to wash her dishes, cook her dinner, and restock her refrigerator. I wonder what the look on her cute little daughter's face would be when she see's her pleasant old mother's guts decorating the walls, and her head sitting on the dinner plate she so loves to serve her mother dinner on?" The black man's smile was now ear to ear and completely inhuman.

"No." Bob growled out, but couldn't muster the strength to stop him.

"How weak. How disgusting. When you get your willpower back, come find me. Otherwise, Enjoy the news broadcasts." The man in black chuckled, dissipating into a black smog.

"Damnit!" Bob growled, tossing the bag onto the bed. Still, despite the black man's assured murders, he couldn't leave his apartment.

He could only close his eyes and wince as he heard the old lady's screams that were quickly silenced moments after. Time seemed to slow down as he heard the sounds of his cell phone buttons beeping from the other room.

He froze. There was only one being that could be in his apartment now. The black man, the Void.

"Hello, yes, my name is Robert Reynolds. I live at... and I would like to report a murder." His voice could be unmistakably heard from the other room.

His world froze, and his thoughts began racing.

"Yes, I killed her, and I will continue to kill more people if you don't come to stop me." Bob vaguely heard as his world spun.

When his world stopped spinning, he saw himself face to face with his spitting image of himself.

"Good luck getting out of this Bob. I was being serious when I said that I want the Sentry back. Good luck getting out of this one." His copy spoke before swirling into shadow and disappearing.

"Shit." Bob growled before quickly throwing on a new set of clothes, a jacket, and running to the door. However, he couldn't take the step out. It was impossible. He just couldn't do it.

In the distance he heard sirens, and they were quickly getting louder.

Things had just gone from bad to worse.
