If someone had told me I would die at twenty-eight because of a distracted driver, I probably would have laughed.

And yet, here I am.

I just woke up to the world, no big explanations or anything, just a tiny baby opening my eyes for the first time.

At first, I thought it was all a dream. Then I thought I had lost my mind. But as I grew up, the memories remained intact. I retained the knowledge, the experiences, and the regrets of my previous life.

This time, I had a rather interesting family.

My parents are naturalists, I think; I don't know what else to call it. But the point is, they are explorers and scientists who travel the world studying wild plants and animals. Their love and concern were genuine; that was never in doubt. But their work required them to be away for weeks, sometimes months.

Luckily, I was a surprisingly responsible child for my age.

I had a lot of life experience, even though I was still really young - twenty-eight years' worth, in fact, but it was all hidden behind the face of a teenager.

When I turned 16, my parents gathered me in the living room.

"We're so sorry," Mom said with a guilty expression. "We've been assigned a project abroad. It's going to be a long one."

"How long?" I asked.

Dad looked down.

"We don't know exactly how long it will take."

Then I heard small footsteps running down the hall.

"Brother!"

A little girl, only seven years old, threw herself at me, and I just managed to catch her in time, stopping her from falling to the ground.

She had really bright purple hair that was all messy, and she was lugging around this huge stuffed animal under her arm.

"Shall we play?"

I smiled without realizing it.

She was my little sister, Scootaloo.

The most important person in my new life.

My parents exchanged an awkward, rather guilty glance.

"We know it's asking too much," Dad said, "but we want you to look after her while we're away. Don't worry, your aunts will come during the day, and we'll video chat whenever we can, but…"

"She won't be alone," I replied before he finished the sentence.

Scootaloo lifted her head to look at me.

"Really?"

I stroked her hair.

"Always."

I wanted to be a good role model for my little sister, so I made a promise to her. It might have been a spur-of-the-moment thing, but my big brother instincts took over and I knew I had to follow through. Whatever the reason, I was determined to be someone she could look up to.

I never imagined how much those simple words would change my life.

But even when things seemed calm and like a fresh start, life had something else in store.

It was just a typical morning when something really weird happened - this strange screen just popped up right in front of me as soon as I opened my eyes.

(Congratulations, you have unlocked Gacha Chaos)
