If you'd gone the last stretch and actually mentioned how the Visigoths were 'swept aside', particularly what role a certain minority from Toledo played in it, their heads would've probably exploded from the cognitive dissonance.

Well, to say the Jews brought it on themselves doesn't feel quite right considering what was going on.

It's not like the Christians have a very good history with the Jewish population being the common target of persecution. With Islam on the rise in the region, their choices were to try and resist them for the sake of Christianity, which had been the source of persecutions toward them for centuries by this point, who were out of power, and get punished by the invaders for doing so, or they could help the new conquerors and hope that being a Dhimmis would spare them the worst of the subjugation.

Also not sure why taqiyya existing would be problematic? Honestly, it kind of sounds sensible to have a provision like that in place, especially considering what Christianity was like.
