Caved and bought Cyberpunk 2077 last week, since it was on a very steep sale, and, after fiddling with the graphics settings, my laptop can actually run it now with a tolerable amount of lag (meaning, it lags a little at startup, as most games do for me, for some reason, then runs pretty smooth and stable).

And the first thing that struck me wasn't that there's still a 9 year-old in me that giggles at seeing a floppy dick in the character creation screen, but that, once I actually got to roam around, Night City is remarkably walkable for what is meant to be an American city. It's one of these games where I genuinely eschew using a car, and instead walk, turn the radio in V's head off, and just soak in the atmosphere of a mega-city.

It might just be the "honeymoon phase" of getting a new game, but I enjoy myself thus far. And Quickhacks are just fun. I pair that with a bit of leveling into Body, so I can do a funny, blind an enemy, and then bonk them over the head with a Kanabo I looted off of some Tyger Claws ganger I killed a long while ago. It's probably suboptimal, but I'm having fun.

The disastrous launch is long over, most if not all bugs have been patched by now, so now I'm not surprised you are enjoying the game. After patches it's a legitimate contender for one of the greatest games of all time.

Well strictly speaking Cyberpunk is meant to have a lot of Japanese influences so clearly it's a case of them changing the city to suit their tastes. :V
(That or the devs understanding that making the player have to jump 8 lanes of fast moving traffic or get a car to go somewhere a few metres away was probably not going to be fun after the first few silly deaths.)

Video Game Scaling. Location sizes are Metaphorical. RuneScape makes this blatant (with the Books outright telling you entire Geographic regions simply absent in the Game) others choose illusions like Skyrim. In fact Skyrim proactively invests in illusions with using things like convenient hills to block LoS to regions that are supposed to be multiple miles away. The Throat of the World is supposed to be miles high with the Thousand Steps being closer to Ten Thousand Steps but there's like less then 200 steps total and it's only like a couple hundred feet high. One farm could Narratively equate to entire countrysides of the same.

Funny enough Daggerfall didn't have Video Game Scaling. IIRC everyone agrees it was awful. You would spend a prohibitive amount of time being busy doing nothing between Point A and Point B. Worse yet the Reason "Fast Travel" is called that is because the OG Fast Travel was literally Named for this Game with traveling fast while sitting and watching your Character sprint on autopilot between locations.

The OS RuneScape also released a region that was realistic sized. It apparently was an awful Experience. The most recent regional addition to Base Game RuneScape also feels like it was made by the OSRS team given how much nothing are between places and this one region is almost the size of the main continent.

The Witcher III straddles the line a bit for demonstrating a three ways of handling it from neglecting to include things to using illusions to actually doing the sizes. But the regions are also supposed to be relatively small chunks of an overall kingdom in comparison to things. There's still Fast Travel but you need to find signposts for it and it's more fun to not use it and chart your journey the Old School way (if you're like me though you do need it just so you can get back from exploring. Also the signposts have Lore tidbits!).

Minecraft is realistically sized... That's a Joke btw, Minecraft doesn't scale to shit. The viable map before glitches set in from calculation issues is roughly around the size of Jupiter. If it weren't for that then it would go till your computer decided to kill itself. There is Biome Scaling with certain things in the Options allowing them to Scale realistically but the Biomes operate off a heat map system (which does bring its own problems but at least allows things to make Geographic sense). Of course Minecraft is Minecraft it overwhelmingly massively benefits from realistic sizes or even Star Wars style "planet sized Biome" unrealism. It proactively encourages using all that space. In other words? Minecraft scales to itself.

They shouldn't have used "crunch time", that consistently introduces bugs and general dysfunction. Semi-conscious programmers don't do their job very well.

Exactly. The best kind of realism in the game is the one that doesn't cause too much inconvenience. And it is really more about immersion coupled with good, engaging gameplay

A criminally unexplored time period and setting where many sailed the high sees to avoid whatever drama is happening in the mainland, all while bypassing absurdly over-regulated international shipping during the pre-modern era. Well I'd give it props for exploring a fantasy version of the modernization of Japan so thank you for the suggestion.

I just wonder if there's any naval combat/pirate games that explore Indo-China and Greater Malaysia during the Age of Exploration. Or any other period for that matter.

There is one sorta.

More like trading with some role playing quests but it does have naval combat and boarding just I wouldn't say in 3D.

Decided to go fossil hunting recently and played King's Field: The Ancient City. King's Field is Fromsoft's precursor to Dark Souls series, in vibes if not gameplay. It's a first person ARPG and like all King's Field games it could be described as slow and methodical or plodding and like controlling a cinder block if it was given life and limbs by the whim of a cruel god, if you prefer. Still, it's strangely compelling and not too difficult, relatively speaking, once you get used to its quirks.

It's very much a niche game and I don't see From returning to the series as a thing that ever happens. Still, this kind of game has its audience and the style isn't totally dead. There's Lunacid, a nice, more modernized take on the style, as well as the (free to play) prequel, Lunacid - Tears of the Moon which was actually made in King's Field's engine since they had some kinda build your own game kit at one point in time. I've heard Verho - Curse of Faces is pretty good though I haven't played it yet and the upcoming Queen's Domain seems promising from the demo.

...speaking of fossil hunting I now wish I could find this one firefighter simulator game from my childhood... Or this one other Game "Dino Island", was basically what Jurassic World 2 advertised itself with 20 years before it Existed. You could actually mix-n-match genetics there. Although there never was an escape mechanic. You could set up elaborate obstacle races in the enclosures for guests to watch though. Pretty much what started my interest in Operation Genesis years later.

It's just a highway driving game where you dodge other cars.

I bounced off Verho myself, finished Lunacid though (aside from the bad ending though, I couldn't be arsed to wait until the correct IRL moonphase to get one of the component weapons for killing Death). I found the demo for Queen's Domain to be kinda mid, not gonna lie.

It worked for all of their previous games, that it didn't for Cyberpunk really caught them off guard. I remember an interview where a manager made fun of Bioware for them mentioning 12 weeks of crunch for ME Andormeda was really difficult and decided bragging that for Witcher 3 they had 3 years of crunch time was a good thing.
