  • A notice about Rule 3 regarding sites hosting pirated/unauthorized content has been made. Please see here for details.

  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.

What’s the difference between criticizing and straight up bullying an author on these forums (SB, QQ, SV, etc)?

Personal attacks and persistence.

Personal attacks are the obvious ones - when you start to sling shit at someone for who or what they are rather than what they're doing or writing it becomes clear your goal isn't actually to criticise than it is to have a shield to be nasty to them without getting called for it.

The second main way is persistence and that's a bit harder to define but essentially, it boils down to this: If you constantly repeat your criticism at every opportunity in their thread, after they have made it clear they have no desire to listen, then you're harassing them. This is because you know as a fact that they won't take aboard what you say, you can't really argue that you're actually trying to help because you know they won't listen. Yet you insist in saying the same things over and over again even when asked not to. At a certain point, it stops being believable that you're actually trying to help and it starts to seem more and more likely that you're seeing them as a target that's safe to vent against because of the flaws of their work or the understandable frustration you get for not being listened to.
