I have a hypothetical.

Say your political opponent is a nazi and nobody but you knows that, nazis are bad, we all know that. They are running for president and will do irreprable damage to whatever country you live in. They are growing in power but to the public's knowledge they have never committed a crime in their life, but you know what their endgame is. They are constantly getting away with challenging you within the law.

Would you have them killed or kill them if you knew you could get away with it?

After all, you're justifying the murder of a man based not on his actions, but on his ideological views. Exactly what Nazis do. Here's a logical example of how you've swallowed the bait of your Nazi adversary.
And yes, who determined that your political opponent is a Nazi? You personally? Did your opponent commit any Nazi crimes, or was their only crime simply disagreeing with you and then using their symbols to troll you? This matters, because if there are no crimes, then you will be the Nazi in such a dispute, not the person you accused of Nazism.

Ultimately, your entire "effectiveness" boils down to giving your enemy the Barbara Streisand effect: if he dies, people pay attention to his views and whitewash them based solely on his death. If he survives, he defeats you in the election by accusing you of Nazism. Your entire effectiveness ultimately becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So, you've just given an example of why killing your opponent is stupid.

And sure, sometimes the Empire will collapse because the Big Bad is the only one with the skill to hold it to together (See the Afsharids of Iran for an example of a short lived state.) But there will always be a power vaccum.

Kill them morally. The problem is in the logistics of planning. Because assassination only really works when other methods have already been tried and failed. Assassination is when an irreversible failure has been effectively initiated. Everything is clear. This is an extreme argument. It's not for nothing that they say, "War is the last argument of kings."

Yes, it is an extreme argument since nobody bases arguments on the easy to answer, no stakes answers. Ideals are only sound when they are tested to the extreme and remain consistent. Nobody disagrees with the idea that murdering and raping somebody is not very nice, but there is still discussion about the death penalty for mass murders in some states and countries.

From my point of view, it is just an excuse for the author to cosplay as a cute lesbian in a yuri relationship without needing to involve a third party because the dick is still there for when they decide to have kids.

Yes, the way clothing, toilets, and music can be useful for characterization when the setting itself has the focus for a while, that's good stuff. Food is the obvious one, but it's still worth doing right. Doing it multiple times, particularly with prior research. I wonder if that's something George R. R. Martin stopped doing, and people subconsciously picked up on the food descriptions bearing meaningful connections to the rest of the culture relevant for a scene...? I could see it.

I expect many people do care, if for no other reason than they don't find "lolis" appealing in the first place. I can't count the number of times I've come across loli art and thought to myself "this would be really hot if she was about ten years older".

Also, in writing style most fanfic authors tend to effectively age up characters anyway because they can't write children or teenagers well at all.

It depends on the Empire as said; look at how Alexander the Greats' empire disintegrated after his death. And in fiction it's quite possible for the evil leader to have powers key to sustaining the empire; kill the Necromancer King and his armies may well all collapse on the spot, obviously not a real-world consideration.

The error fanfics are prone to make is to not consider what kind of empire they are talking about. There's a world of difference between an empire like Alexander's and something like Rome or China, where the most you probably get is a civil war if the political timing is bad. Well made empires don't fall apart when one guy dies, but not all empires are well made.

You know the ones, where oonga boonga stupid minority and "enlightened" smart minority both think something simple and radical, while the meat of the bell curve majority is represented by crying soyjak who thinks "nooo it's shades of grey, we need to try and listen to all perspectives!1!!"

Harems of any kind? Not gonna read it. Yeah, yeah, sometimes there's reason, blah-blah, 100 quintessential quintuplet girlfriends or whatever. I don't have time or care to engage with a trope that I hate 99 percent of the time for the offchance of finding 1 good percent.
Self-Inserts? I've tried, a lot, since lots of fanfics use SIs to get going - and there's not one that's half-decent. Every story with SI can be better and more interesting with OC or character insert instead, they are always redundant because they rarely ever explore what being inserted as a real person means.
Magical cores in HP? As soon as I see the words "magical core" I drop the fic no matter the reviews.
And so on and so forth.

Life is short and there's only so much leisure in it to waste it on things you know aren't good. "Everything can be done well" is true, but not worth it in many cases.

P.S.: Short controversial opinion - Frieren is an overrated japanese slop with dense MC and devoted waifu being hopelessly in love with him for just breathing, just inverted. Instead of following Himmel with Frieren being obsessed with him - we're following Frieren who's... still obsessed with him, just late and that's tragic. But the core dynamic, and core fantasy, and the reason it's popular with guys - it's still 'cute waifu who's obsessed with you', just with added subversive layer. Since I don't engage with media with MC-obsessed waifus per my idea in this post - I don't watch Frieren.

Completely Valid. The bell curve is a great way to put it. Especially the Frieren part. Not even just for what you said, but there's way better shows/mangas with obsessed fmcs than Frieren as well. As for SIs, yeah I don't give them the time of day much unless the summary resonates with me on a very high standard.

Also, Friend inserts can go to hell. I hate those specifically. Unless your friend is a depressed orphan loser with no life and money at all whosgoing to die in a month from cancer or has given informed consent, I couldn't imagine yanking them from their lives, jobs, families, significant others all for your amusement. That's just not what friends do.

Man, I want to read a fiction about the Adventurers Guild leader. About how much BULLSHIT he must have to put up with when handling all these egos. Like, so many pre-Madonas amongst this class of people. "Nobles" always get a bad rap because poor people (yes I'm poor too), ahem, because poor people are like crabs in a bucket happy to see those higher up in the bucket suffer. But how many times are adventurers depicted as part time bandits/scum of the earth? Yeah, I could go for a western fantasy without this uninspired slop.

It really is always so uninspired. I'd like to some day see an adventurer's guild dealing with some repercussions, or at least being treated as it is by either nobility and nations, a force that can turn hostile at any moment and become a real threat. Like they're in almost every city for some reason and have consolidated power of thousands of superhumans, yet the king/queen/parliament is just cool with it?

There's a reason PMCs and companies are heavily regulated when forming forces. Like yes, I get monsters and dragons and what not are out there, but some originality would go a long way.

Heck, make it be a competition between other guilds and the adventurer's guilds. Information and crafting guilds might buy more items than the adventurer's guilds thus causing less of a monopoly. Heck, have multiple different adventurer's guilds in different cities all vying for dominance with their own local and regional politics.

In friend insert, at least in theory, said friend can be oblivious to the world and powers, they act in new surprising ways more often. SIs with powers/into characters are much worse, because they always basically cosplay said characters, invalidating the only interesting part of the idea.

Not all of them, not everytime - but more often than not, especially if it's a male MC of a big, popular franchise. Like, well, your Narutos and Dekus. For some reason, reading about them getting their new powerups and their shitty harems just... rubs me all the wrong ways squared. Digging a bit deeper, with Worm and certain other stories with background forces (for a quick and shitty example something like GATE with it's gods), I hate "cryptic" ""interludes"" where such corrupted text along with various ??? and other quirky designs are prevalent.
No, I don't want to read vague 'corrupted' riddles and ooh and ahh in the comments like it's some cool creative design. I don't care about "Queenie" or "Shaper" ""halping"" and ""getting angy"" at ""stoopid/bestest host". It's childish and cheap. In better stories such background processes stay in the background in the mind of the author, adding them to the story improves nothing, it's just indulgent.

In friend insert, at least in theory, said friend can be oblivious to the world and powers, they act in new surprising ways more often. SIs with powers/into characters are much worse, because they always basically cosplay said characters, invalidating the only interesting part of the idea.


I get you, and I have my own brand of hating something popular - I hate MCs
Not all of them, not everytime - but more often than not, especially if it's a male MC of a big, popular franchise. Like, well, your Narutos and Dekus. For some reason, reading about them getting their new powerups and their shitty harems just... rubs me all the wrong ways squared. I can forgive much more stupid wish-fulfillment wank to fics with rare and surprising MCs.

Sure, there is some irony I guess. As for that Gojo thing, yeah, it's always some weird uncanny facsimile of fannon and cannon. The whole point of SI personalities is that you're not the cannon character, no? As for popular MCs, yeah. I'm so sick of Goku, Batman, Superman, Issei, Deku, Naruto and the like to the point I won't even read a story with those characters if it's not really high quality writing.

Give me The Androids as MXCs. Android 17 or 18 as a crossover mc is much more interesting than Goku or even Vegeta to me at this point. Give me Raven, Starfire, or Zatanna or even John Constantine instead of Bruce, Clark, or Hal Jordan.
