Well, that is a relief. I would hate to see the scene where Paul was in Hades trying to figure out what happened.

Paul's stated numerous times that Sivana wants "every country" to pardon him but Paul expects him to be satisfied with most.

I think he meant every country that would have reason to punish Sivana due to crimes he committed in their territory or against their citizens, and he was hoping that Sivana would be satisfied if most of them pardoned him.

Countries where he hasn't committed any crimes wouldn't exactly be able to pardon him.

I float just outside the fortified factory complex, frustration steadily growing.

    "Tsua'm, what's the hold up?"

"Standard rules of engagement indicate that individuals with warp-based abilities should not be employed in situations like this. As such, Fio'o Dy'aketh Shi'ra is reluctant to authorise your use."

"And the Fio'o can't read? Because at this point your reports are fairly conclusive."

"My reports have not yet undergone peer review, and as such have not been widely distributed. Or accepted, in the face of personal experience."

Dy'aketh is a low level industrial world the tau captured during one of their more recent wars with the Imperium. It's… Not in compliance with the dictates of the Greater Good, and the population is too dense for the tau to be hands-off about it. They were managing… Mostly, but with the local branch of the Imperial Cult not willing to cooperate with the foul xenos they pretty much had to purge the whole thing. And while the newly formed Church of Divine Unity is… Sort of managing to prevent a religious uprising amongst the more impassioned imperialists, there isn't anyone-.

    Maleficent detected.

S-hit. There isn't anyone keeping tabs on the planet's wyrds and cultists. Which means that people are 'hearing the voices' with increasing frequency.

    "The ring's picking up summonings."

"I will-. Relay the increased urgency."

"Please do. Lantern to Kais-" I smile very faintly. "-the Barbarian."

"That is not the correct translation for Monat." There's a faint crackle as he speaks, then a louder one as he fires his rifle. "And it is also not my name."

    "How's it looking?"

Scans are not reliable when someone's messing around with the warp, and I'm too far away from the conflict zone to make use of the more primitive detection systems built into my armour.

"Cultist tactical infantry and mutant mob assault units. No y'he sighted. Fire Warrior lines are holding and my squad-."

A series of loud bangs cut him off, followed by the buzz-crack of burst cannons and the screech of fusion blasters.

    "Are you-?"

"Target destroyed. My squad are making flanking attacks of opportunity."

    "Chaos or random lunatics?"

"Their icon is a circle and two crescents connected by a line."

    "Slaanesh."

Which is either a good match up for me or means that I'm about to hear the voices myself. Slaanesh worshippers are all about unleashing their desires and I strongly suspect that daemons are the same only more so.

"I remember. I-. Wait. Report coming in. The mutants appear to have become dramatically more resilient. Our lines are-"

"Regional command to Exotic Asset Orange Lantern."

    "-being overwhelmed."

"Stay safe." I switch channels. "Orange Lantern reporting."

"Your deployment is authorised." I don't immediately recognise the voice. Not someone on my team. Files say… Shas'o Dy'aketh Eant'ra. Who really should be in charge here, but the Fire Caste head of police got assassinated when this mess started so the local head of industrial development has political oversight. "You will-"

Construct ion engines appear on my back as I fly at speed in the direction of Kais' signal. And I begin to feed, orange light illuminating the fortified manufactoria around me.

Capacitors at sixty seven percent and rising.

I've tried recharging like this around the warp engines of captured Imperial Navy wrecks, and according to reports by the salvage crews the instances of 'reality deviations' noticeably decreased after each visit. But I've never done this somewhere where someone who knew what they were doing -a sorcerer or a daemon- was actively resisting me. Even the hybrid cultists limited themselves to drawing on warp power rather than futzing around with the warp directly. Everything I think I know about warp power and everything the tau have been willing to share strongly implies that this should work.

But if the tau knew much about the warp they wouldn't need me.

"-advance to Industrial District forty seven-."

"Miss Tsua'm, would you please explain to the Shas'o how this works? Thank you."

I close the channel and ping Kais. Ah, the wonders of the tau command structure. Normally, the field Shas'o commands ground units, the field Kor'o commands air and space units and the local Aun'o mediates any disputes between them. But as an auxiliary I'm not by default under the authority of either. With vespid or kroot their Strain Leaders or Shapers would have a pact with the Sept's overseers which defined the command relationship, but I've just sort of picked up a few members of each caste (mostly but not exclusively from Lar'shi) and I haven't got a formal operating agreement with Lar'shi oversight yet. The Dy'aketh oversight committee can decide to bar me from operating here, but once I get the okay that's the end of their involvement in the matter.

Kais pings back as I start seeing weapon damage and eldritch lightning crackling off the upper levels of the manufactorium. I connect myself to the markerlight network.

"Light up a target for me."

A ping of acknowledgement and then there and I accelerate, construct armour forming around me as I smash through a wall, orange battering ram slamming into… A chaos spawn? That was about to leap onto a prone Fire Warrior. I pound it into a support column as chain constructs dart out, wrapping themselves around the… Six of the things I can actually see.

There's a certain uniformity here. Extended and broadened forearms, bone plates extending down the spine as natural armour and flattened noses. If that was all they had I'd define them as abhumans, as they're clearly breeding true.

But it isn't. As they shrivel I can clearly see that one has tentacles in place of its left hand. Another has a set of smaller arms with… Three fingers, attached somehow to its ribs. A third has multiple sets of eyes, running down the front of its face and the back of its head. The fourth has no legs, its spine continuing back as a tail. The fifth has some sort of exoskeleton while the sixth has gone in the other direction, probably able to pass as human in bad light. And with the aid of the psykers who sent them out here, they're all shimmering with pink fire. It's not hurting my constructs, so I'm just going to ignore it for now.

    Feed.

    "NGRAAAAAAH!"

I wince as they all scream, construct chains shining brilliantly as-

Capacitors at seventy two percent and rising.

-the ring turns warp power into orange light. The fires billow and die, the mutants' bodies shrivelling as the unholy magic enhancing them vanishes. Was it an enhancement spell or are they actually possessed? I could probably check, but I don't think I want to see that.

    "Independent fire! Kill them!"

The Shas'ui in command of the squad rallies a fire team and they open fire, shots… Acceptably accurate, considering the circumstances. Most hit the bodies of the mutants, pulses of plasma punching through warp-altered flesh. No blood, though that could be due to cauterisation as easily as their daemonic passengers not needing it. Quick check… Dead, dead, dead, dead, dead and dead. I smash their heads to be sure just as Kais pings me again.

    On I go.

I would have much preferred to see how our enlightened Paragon interacted with Slaaneshis, whether they be cultists or daemons, not that we got much of that here. Looking forward to more.

Nice. Now I'm wondering what an Orange Central Power Battery would do in 40k.

Also, does Paul actually have a long term plan Zoat? Draining deamons one at a time isn't going to get him very far.

Can he make more Rings? I forgot if he needed to be enlightened for that or not...

And a break to see what P'aul's up to, I see. Not doubt staying busy in the dark future.

And even in the Tau Empire, bureaucrats are obstructive. Figures. Still, a good protocol concerning Warpy stuff.

Well, I suspect at least one leader is about to get plenty of the latter.

The population is dense all right. 'Church of Divine Unity'... Clearly a Chaos cult. But hey, humans will follow anything shiny, if it has enough skulls and fire. Imperials are easy to please like that.

I'm honestly amazed there aren't natural outbreaks of daemons as it is. I shudder at the thought of how many undetected and unprotected psykers and sensitives are running around now.

...A master of understatement, I see. Must be Water Caste.

Heh, able to make puns and blame it on bad translations. Such a handy trick. I see there's no hard feelings between them after the whole 'pretend to be a daemon' bit he used to wake Kais up.

I'm guessing a human-fitted version of Fire Warrior armour, with proper boots instead of hoof-sleeves. Not like the cheap stuff they'd give Gue'vesa auxiliaries... You know, humans.

His squad is seeing combat, evidently. And supported by a stealth team or battlesuit, from the sound of those weapons. The former is standard kit for the light stealth armour, with the latter as a squad specialist weapon. Think plasma gatling gun and nuclear heat ray respectively, for the 40k virgins.

I wonder, is he in a standard squad, close assault Breacher team or scouting Pathfinder unit... Heck, with his experience, he could qualify as a Fireblade, a field lieutenant...

Oh, bugger. The Great Seductor has taken an interest in this world it seems. Because of OL, I wonder?

Plenty of Warpyness for the Ring to nom down on, at least.

Looks like the civilian leadership has cottoned on that he's needed. And the Psychic Phase just finished, with the enemy sorcerers casting buffs powers.

Safe. On a Warhammer 40,000 Battlefield. Quite the oxymoron there.

Ah, good, I see he's had to get that down damn fast. Desperation is the mother of cleverness, after all.

Ah, the 'suck it and see if it kills you' approach. I wonder how the Sorcerers will react when you drop an effective null-zone on them?

Amusing that the Fire Caste gal or guy thinks they're in charge of him. I can't help but think of him as equivalent to a superhero now... Imagine if or when his existence becomes public, unlikely as that will be.

And until then, he's a flying Lord of War with the ultimate in multi-function devices. Gods, can you imagine his tabletop stats? :D

Air support has arrived. And unlike most flying soldiers, this one is not skeet.

Sounds like the Chaos player splurged on Spawn kits. I remember doing that back when Apocalypse first came out with bundle packs. Picked up twelve spawn, and they're still in my collection today. In need of repainting, but still there.

Buff spells. That won't last long before P'aul's Ring. Probably giving an Invulnerable Saving throw, Toughness bonus or Initiative bonus...

Evidently the power goes bone deep. I doubt there's enough of their minds left to register the pain, beyond that animalistic response, though.

Yeah, might be a bit awkward to make mental contact with a Daemonette. It probably looks like Pornhub on random in there as it is.

Ah, Tau Pulse weapons. Safe, stable plasma weapons, mass-produced and used by the basic infantry. Better than the Imperial stuff, which is prone to backfiring because of a hideous dearth of safety procedures and overclocking...

Good to see P'aul finding his place in Tau society. ;) As one hell of a Special Character choice. I take it the overall government is still working out just what to do with him... Unsurprising, given their lack of experience with truly outstanding individuals...

I hear you. :) I still enjoy these updates though. I like puzzling things out to learn what I can from the context, and then just ignore the bits that I don't care about (such as names). I don't know how Mr Zoat keeps all those, for all the different versions of Paul, straight in his head.

Truly some things are just universal.

At least they're better than Imperium bureaucrats.

Either that or this was just a random attack.

Actually Tau plasma weapons are less effective then Imperium Plasma weapons by a significant margin across all metrics from range to damage.

    To wit it's.

    Imperium - 24 - Rapid Fire - 7 - -3 - 1 with Supercharge option

    Compared to.

    Tau - 21 - Rapid Fire - 6 - -3 - 1 with no Supercharge option.

The Church of Divine Unity is the local tau's tame Ecclesiarchy-lite church. The local Slaanesh-worshippers are The Cult of the Miracle.
Human auxiliaries either get locally produced flak armour, or back in... 4th? The Imperial Guard Codex that introduced doctrines, I think they were shown having the same carapace armour as the tau.
They're an XV15 Stealth Team. Kais lacks the leadership expereince to be a Fireblade.

    I don't know a ton about 40K but...

That didn't work because he has no brain. Just being sentient goo.

Every demonic thing that opposed him fell to the almighty cookie beam.

Again, I couldn't tell you what should happen. 40K seems to run on nonsense and Buu runs on Toriyama (and what Toriyama remembers)

    Neat, More 40k.

Nice to see P'aul making himself useful.

As for the Imperial vs Tau Plasma debate, the Tau actually know how theirs work, and lack the overcharge feature (re: Disabling the safety features) because they like their guns (and gunners) to NOT explode. Which happens with imperial gear 16.6% of the time they pull the trigger. The Imperial guns might technically be more sophisticated when it comes to materials, how they function and how compact they are. But the cargo cult (The Adeptus Mechanicus, or 'the Cog Boys' if you're a Guardsman) that are responsible for building and maintaining them aren't sane, rational people. They Chant and pray and burn incense before they swat the thing with a wrench a few times to make the holo displays work. Also skulls....everywhere. Imperials have no OSHA Compliance.

Not that Chaos is any better of course, as these poor sods are a prime example of. The Chaos Sp...er....That-Which-Shall-Not-Be-Named are what happens when you get too much warp energy into your average mook. A Little Chaos and you get some neat powers/magic, the odd mutation. But generally your brain and biology still work. Getting a Lot COULD make you a walking Demigod IF you have the will and the power to contain it...if you don't...you end up looking like a rolling ball of meat straight out of Akira....or worse. Possession is a little different, in that there is a distinct demon using you as a meat suit, and making the place a bit more homey by feng shui-ing your organs and bones. Pretty hard to tell the difference, but possessed tend to be smarter and more functional as troops while ...the Other thing... tends to be a rampaging animal. What most Chaos types want is 'Apotheosis', otherwise known as ascending to the status of Daemon Prince, which converts a mortal into a high powered immortal daemon, no longer bound by biology or physics. Down side is it takes a lot of ripping time and space a new hole to exist in the mortal realms when you're a full on daemon, hence why they tend to get by using mooks to anchor them to the material.

The Tau folks tech base is kinda interesting, especially if you've got a subspace pocket to keep stuff in. Wonder what P'aul's armor looks like in this place, and if he's got his own Crisis Suit? ( a tau mini mech that's a passing resemblance to Gundam at times, compared to imperial stuff which is more steampunk + battletech).

Overcharging is optional and most Imperium plasma weapons don't have it done.

So... You're argument here is that standard Imperium plasma rifles are superior to Tau battlesuit mounted plasma guns?

That doesn't help much. He'd be immune to things like Brain Leafs and some remote scan based devices, but telepaths in 40K are wizards who use warp magic to manipulate minds, not people with altered brain structures who are able to remotely connect to other brains. He can probably ignore some powers and I doubt that they'll have an easy time of it, but he certainly wouldn't be immune to everything.
Did he ever use it on enemy ki attacks? Because 40K daemons aren't basically aliens like Dabura was, who could physically die. They're manifestations of energy creatures from a parallel universe. They're not strong by DBZ standards, but you can't punch something that's trying to possess you.
Strictly speaking, ki isn't a thing in 40K so he should die the moment he appeared. I was being generous.
You forget something. I started in 2nd Ed, when the Imperium used the completely safe but slow charging Mark 2 plasma guns. The only ones who used the leaky Mark 1 plasma guns were the Traitor Legions.
The vast majority were not eaten.
Oh, come on. It couldn't be used reliably and any Tau army should have some weapons that could kill the Inquisitor's retinue.
