With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

They didn't forgive Klarion, they allowed him to help take down someone worse. Beast Boy's trauma subplot was handled realistically, Emerald Empress, was only nonsensical because she's usually a separate character, and what they did with how Mary Marvel using magic to use Shazam powers in a different way was clever.

They're still treating Klarion as just another member of the group by the end, though. Zatanna should especially be angrier at Klarion, considering he's partly responsible for her father sacrificing himself to Nabu.

And no, Beast Boy's trauma subplot was not handled well at all. Beast Boy's storyline very frequently interfered with the season's plot and character development from other team members, his grumpy attitude and the ways most of the other heroes showed little concern for him made everyone look like assholes, its cause in Superboy's presumed death ended up being pointless with the reveal of the latter's survival, and the fact that Black Canary (who isn't even a qualified trauma counsellor or therapist, by the way) was the one to resolve this problem, rather than other people that were closer to Garfield, is just plain dumb. Garfield's attitude towards people genuinely trying to help him also comes off as excessively callous, with his dismissal and rudeness towards Perdita, M'gann and Robotman being especially grating, because they were all trying to be nice to him and had done nothing to deserve this treatment. Yes, Beast Boy is understandably sad, angry and depressed, but that doesn't give him a pass to act like a dick to everyone. Especially not to M'gann, the one person in the room who has just as much, if not more reason than Garfield to be depressed and angry at her partner's presumed death. Just saying, she's just as devasted by Superboy's presumed death as Garfield, but we don't see her act like a total bitch, now do we? Also, the ultimate payoff for the whole depression subplot is kind of lame. Garfield's recovery is shown in less detail than his downfall aside from his new therapy dog Wingman, he never joins the final battle against the forces of General Zod or meets Lor-Zod, and while he does mention Superboy being alive, we never get to see his reaction to Superboy's survival being shown onscreen, despite the fact that Superboy's "death" was the thing that pushed Garfield over the edge in the first place. Pointless and unsatisfying, if you ask me.

Also, the reason why I said the Emerald Empress plot was nonsense is that Ursa becoming the Emerald Empress, thanks to Lor-Zod randomly carrying the eye on him at the time from his earlier visit to Metron's vault, is baffling. For one thing, nothing up to that point suggested Ursa was worthy of the eye's power and the emerald trinket just happened to activate all by itself to bond with her (despite the fact that it was nowhere near her) just because she was getting agitated by Nightwing. Plus, even though it's supposed to obey her every command, the Eye forces Ursa out of the battlefield against her will when her husband loses their fight against the heroes.

Lastly, when it comes to Mary Marvel, I'm not opposed to the idea of her learning to use her powers in different ways, but the idea of presenting magic as a metaphor for drug addiction was really dumb. Especially because the show has gone out of its way to show magic as being cool and awesome, with most magic users suffering zero negative side-effects from repeated usage. Also, if Mary was really getting addicted to her magic and getting corrupted by it, then why didn't the Wizard notice it? Why didn't he just strip her of her powers? He's constantly monitoring his champions, after all. He would have definitely noticed something.

Guess that means they never went with the angel kings for power sources.

Hope it didn't cause a theological crisis for Billy

You know, it's funny, but I only watched the first episode or two of canon young justice, and now I'm happy about that.

I mean...aside from Solomon all of Billy's patrons belong to pagan religions, so I doubt he'd care.

Though I think he was weirded out by the prospect of being a PR move by the Shinto gods.

Oh, you think that's dumb? Trust me, the show gets worse. How about the fact that they're bringing in stuff from Heroes In Crisis, one of the most hated comic book stories of the last decade or so?

Not dumb enough? Get this: The heroes basically forgave Klarion and actually made him a member of their magic squad in Season 4. This is in spite of the fact that he's showed virtually zero remorse for what he did back in Season one.

Still not doing it for you? How about all the other things they botched up in later seasons, like Beast Boy's trauma subplot, the nonsensical Emerald Empress, or how they portrayed the Powers of Shazam? I can do this all day.
I wish I could say that I'm surprised.
seconding this question. i don't think anyone has informed Zod of the discoveries so far. which then begs the question, does Zod know who/what the Dominators are? did Krypton have interactions with them? were they enemies/neutral (i can't imagine anyone being allies with the Dominators)?

i'm also curious as to what Amalak thinks about all of this. will he turn all of that righteous anger towards the Dominators once he gets fully informed? it would be nice to have someone doing some of OL's work for him on that front
Zod has heard of the Dominion. The Kryptonian Empire never had any direct contact with them, but officially considered them 'potentially problematic'. Zod doesn't know that the helpful alien who just gave him a sunstone was a dominator.
You know, it's funny, but I only watched the first episode or two of canon young justice, and now I'm happy about that.
Series 1 and 2 are pretty good, the occasional oddity aside.

My understanding is that the only reference to Heroes in Crisis is having some of the heroes attend therapy. This is technically following the lead of Heroes in Crisis but it is not including the disturbing and idiotic aspects of that series.

What are you talking about? They temporarily teamed up with Klarion to fight another invading Chaos Lord (Child and Flaw). This is after the story arc starts with them fighting and is very clearly out of desperation. There was nothing like him being forgiven or joining the Team.

TV shows keep doing that (the only one that immediately comes to mind is late-series Buffy, but I'm sure there are others), and I do not think that I've ever seen one do it anything other than badly (usually because they introduce the addiction plot later, when they've started to run out of ideas). I feel like a big part of the problem is that they have no respect for the intelligence of the viewers, on top of a lot of the writers also not being terribly smart.

Can't defend the evil Mary Marvel or Emerald Empress Ursa thing though, those were was plain dumb.

Motivations (part 21) New

I think that if Mr. Luthor knew about the theta wave state then the genomorphs would have made sure I was programmed with it.

"Green Lantern to Match and Star Sapphire."

Ghia'ta and I stop in the air, and I raise my bracer so I can look at the screen.

"We're here. Go ahead."

"The dominators just broke Ursa and Zod out."

Huh? "How?"

"They teleported a guy in and handed them a sunstone. Guess they didn't take them with them so there'd be a distraction."

"Is Mary okay?"

"Yeah, she's got it, but Xudar's navy isn't exactly on the Dominion's level and I'm stuck jamming their teleportation until Tomar and Arisia get back. Any luck finding Lyla?"

I shake my head. "Nothing yet. How did the dominators get here so fast?"

"They probably had a cold gate set up somewhere. Space is too big to check everywhere, especially when you don't know there's anything to check for. Let me know if you find anything. Green Lantern out."

I nod and lower my arm, looking at Ghia'ta. "Any luck?"

She shakes her head sadly. "I can feel no love for her or from her."

I nod. "X-ray vision's no good. Half the buildings here block it completely and for all I know she can make an illusion to change how her skeleton looks. Hearing's no good because she doesn't have to use Non's voice, and I can't smell her because this whole city smells weird." I shrug helplessly. "So I guess we're just stuck hoping we get lucky. At least until the dominators come closer."

She nods. "Could we ask Dame Carol to ask the dominators which the Earth has as prisoners to speak with the Dominion fleet?"

I look up, narrowing my eyes until my eyes pick out the Dominion fleet. I can't really get scale like this, but it looks like… Three cruisers, a couple of dozen attack craft and… The other ships have a different style, but…

"Do dominators use mercenaries?"

"Oh yes. The usually prefer using mercenaries to sending their own ships."

"How do they make sure that the mercenaries stay on their side?"

"Good pay and brutal retribution. They won't betray the Dominion unless you can move their entire planet to somewhere the dominators will never find it."

Darn. "What's their technology like?"

"Dominator technology is… Advanced. But they usually don't sell anything that good to their henchmen."

"So the three cruisers are the main threat if we start fighting."

"If we knew what they were trying to do. But not necessarily. Dominator ships can just be workshops or something to carry their machines around in." She shudders. "But if we can get inside them, then we should. Some of their recent victims might still be in storage."

"Have you fought them before?"

She nods slowly. "Dame Carol said that they were a 'guilt-free target'. I tried to find any love at all inside them and there was none at all. They have torn the capacity for love out of themselves and said that it is a good thing."

"Like the psions?"

She shakes her head quickly. "The psions became like they did because of how maltusians treated them. If they'd treated them better then I'm sure that they would have been better. Or even if they'd just left them alone. The dominators became how they are all by themselves."

"Do they clone themselves too?" She nods. "Do you know how they think?"

She shakes her head uncertainly. "They are disturbing. I don't want to think like them. Why are you asking?"

"I was thinking… What are they trying to do, exactly? We couldn't find Lyla anyway. The Xudarians aren't going to accept them just sitting there forever, but they could probably have teleported her out before Green Lantern started jamming them. Why did they try freeing Zod?"

"Ah-um..? Because they knew where he was?"

"So, what, they want Zod or Ursa to find her for them? How would they know where she is either?"

"Maybe… Lyla knows that she's supposed to look for them?"

"But how would she know that the dominators contacted them? The xudarians aren't announcing it, I'm using the theta wave state, and… Are you sure she can't read your mind?"

She shrugs. "My mom was Zamaron. I'm… Not millions of years old like she was, but I'm… Older than your country."

"America?"

"Themyscira. I've learned how to keep people out of my mind, and I'm deeply connected to the violet light."

"If-."

Ow! I wince as a high frequency sound pierces my brain-. Ghia'ta isn't reacting so it's probably something only a kryptonian can hear. Can I-? Yes.

"This way!"

I fly across the city, mindful of the air traffic lanes. Ghia'ta's right behind me.

"Match to everyone. I just heard an ultra-high frequency sound and I'm heading towards it's source now."

"I heard it too." Superman's face appears on the bracer's screen. "Someone's trying to attract a kryptonian's attention."

"Ursa."

"Not necessarily. They know we're here."

True…

"Then, why?"

"Another distraction, maybe? Or it could be a code they set up before Lyla went into the Phantom Zone."

Okay, we're here… I come to a halt, staring around, eyes darting from place to place as I try and spot whatever it was that made that noise. Ghia'ta's scanning, but there are only a few local people around and… I don't think any of them are Lyla in disguise. If I can-.

There!

I fly downwards, picking the speaker out of a gutter. It's… Kryptonian technology, set to play a burst of sound on a delay. Piezoelectric, so there's no battery or anything else like that we could detect. I trigger it to play -ow- again. Same noise.

I look closer. I can see fingerprints, so I guess I know what her real fingers look like now. But… She's not here.

"Found it. She's not here. And it doesn't look like she only just ran off. Ghia'ta, are there any camera around here?"

Her eyes flicker. "Not close to here."

Superman nods. "Okay. Stay there for now in case someone else turns up."

I nod. I can still see the Dominion ships from here, and Ghia'ta can move us faster than light if normal flying isn't fast enough. I-.

Huh.

I press the crystal again, triggering the sound burst-

"Match?"

-and it's…

"It's not a continuous tone. But I can't make it out. I don't think it's words, and I don't have any way to-." I look at Ghia'ta's ring. "Ghia'ta, can you check it out for me?"

She holds up her right hand, ring glowing as I trigger the crystal again. And then she frowns. "You were right, it's not words. A series of pulses, like Morse code."

Superman nods. "Send it to the Doomsday and I'll get Karsta Wor-Ul to take a look. Good guess, Match. Superman out."

I think that if Mr. Luthor knew about the theta wave state then the genomorphs would have made sure I was programmed with it.

"Green Lantern to Match and Star Sapphire."
So, our perspective shifts to Mitchell. Sensible enough. With OL off-world, the Teammates on Xudar are the only people on the ground, so to speak, to give us a view of the action. and there's plenty of them to switch between.

Ghia'ta and I stop in the air, and I raise my bracer so I can look at the screen.

"We're here. Go ahead."
His bracer effectively being a tactical tablet, much like Robin's. Presumably quite a lot more durable and lacking the deeper hacking capabilities, though...

"The dominators just broke Ursa and Zod out."

Huh? "How?"
At least they're in the know now. And they're probably two of the best options for taking Ursa down gently enough to not trouble her unborn child much.

"They teleported a guy in and handed them a sunstone. Guess they didn't take them with them so there'd be a distraction."

"Is Mary okay?"
If I remember right, Mitchell is a stable full kryptonian, so him getting that sunstone could be quite useful to him. Something to loot after the fight!

Well, the Timaronians would have been spreading word of Zod's trial to local systems with an interest. It's possible the Dominators got that word and took up a position nearby to see what turned up...

"They probably had a cold gate set up somewhere. Space is too big to check everywhere, especially when you don't know there's anything to check for. Let me know if you find anything. Green Lantern out."
'Cold gate' meaning a long-range relay running on low standby output, so that it doesn't produce much more emissions than any other interstellar object, I take it.

I nod and lower my arm, looking at Ghia'ta. "Any luck?"

She shakes her head sadly. "I can feel no love for her or from her."
As for Lyla, I doubt she's been left with much of the positive emotions after whatever they did to augment her abilities.

And he's working blind on all fronts anyway in terms of Lyla's 'real' presence. At best, he's hoping she doesn't disguise her scent the way she does her appearance or voice...

She nods. "Could we ask Dame Carol to ask the dominators which the Earth has as prisoners to speak with the Dominion fleet?"

I looks up, narrowing my eyes until my eyes pick out the Dominion fleet. I can't really get scale like this, but it looks like… Three cruisers, a couple of dozen attack craft and… The other ships have a different style, but…
I doubt they're remotely anywhere near the same chain of command. At best, they'd be ignored.

"Do dominators use mercenaries?"

"Oh yes. The usually prefer using mercenaries to sending their own ships."
Which makes this fleet a little atypical? Or did they figure they'd need to make sure of overwhelming force to capture the Doomsday?

"How do they make sure that the mercenaries stay on their side?"

"Good pay and brutal retribution. They won't betray the Dominion unless you can move their entire planet to somewhere the dominators will never find it."
And if you were that powerful, you wouldn't be working for the Dominators...

Darn. "What's their technology like?"

"Dominator technology is… Advanced. But they usually don't sell anything that good to their henchmen."

"So the three cruisers are the main threat if we start fighting."
But the smaller ships have the advantage of numbers, and they'll likely try to defend the bigger ones.

"If we knew what they were trying to do. But not necessarily. Dominator ships can just be workshops or something to carry their machines around in." She shudders. "But if we can get inside them, then we should. Some of their recent victims might still be in storage."
A good, compassionate point. Embodying 'love of all' quite nicely.

"Have you fought them before?"

She nods slowly. "Dame Carol said that they were a 'guilt-free target'. I tried to find any love at all inside them and there was none at all. They have torn the capacity for love out of themselves and said that it is a good thing."
And to a race like the Zamarons, that must seem like an unspeakable atrocity...

"Like the psions?"

She shakes her head quickly. "The psions became like they did because of how maltusians treated them. If they'd treated them better then I'm sure that they would have been better. Or even if they'd just left them alone. The dominators became how they are all by themselves."
Eh, I'm not so sure about the psions, but yeah, the Dominators probably leapt full-force into their current manner of existence. Most are bred specifically for their intended role, are they not, with advancement upwards or downwards only upon a great victory or loss...

"Do they clone themselves too?" She nods. "Do you know how they think?"

She shakes her head uncertainly. "They are disturbing. I don't want to think like them. Why are you asking?"
Few people would want to think that way. It'd feel like dunking you brain in a cess-pit, I bet.

"I was thinking… What are they trying to do, exactly? We couldn't find Lyla anyway. The Xudarians aren't going to accept them just sitting there forever, but they could probably have teleported her out before Green Lantern started jamming them. Why did they try freeing Zod?"
...They want the Doomsday, right? And it probably won't respond to anyone but a kryptonian. So they'll need at least one to use as a catspaw until they can mass-clone replicas.

"Ah-um..? Because they knew where he was?"

"So, what, they want Zod or Ursa to find her for them? How would they know where she is either?"
And that's assuming that they actually want Lyla. Maybe if she can replicate kryptonian biometry enough to fool restricted kryptonian tech?

"Maybe… Lyla knows that she's supposed to look for them?"

"But how would she know that the dominators contacted them? The xudarians aren't announcing it, I'm using the theta wave state, and… Are you sure she can't read your mind?"
Have the Dominators contacted the planet? Made demands for the Kryptonians or Lyla? A bit of a stretch if they haven't.

She shrugs. "My mom was Zamaron. I'm… Not millions of years old like she was, but I'm… Older than your country."

"America?"

"Themyscira. I've learned how to keep people out of my mind, and I'm deeply connected to the violet light."
That must be a little frustrating. Spending millennia as a teenager, unless it's more a state of mind than anything.

"If-."

Ow! I wince as a high frequency sound pierces my brain-. Ghia'ta isn't reacting so it's probably something only a kryptonian can hear. Can I-? Yes.
If this was Earth, I would have asked if Jimmy Olsen were around... But this has to be significant. A signal to attract the Dominators to her location? Or her to theirs.

"This way!"

I fly across the city, mindful of the air traffic lanes. Ghia'ta's right behind me.
I bet they appreciate that, given the emergency conditions.

"Match to everyone. I just heard an ultra-high frequency sound and I'm heading towards it's source now."

"I heard it too." Superman's face appears on the bracer's screen. "Someone's trying to attract a kryptonian's attention."
But which kryptonian? Zod or Ursa? Lyla in her transformed disguise?

"Ursa."

"Not necessarily. They know we're here."
...And a young kryptonian clone must seem like a valuable target, so i suspect he or Clark are priority secondary targets...

True…

"Then, why?"

"Another distraction, maybe? Or it could be a code they set up before Lyla went into the Phantom Zone."
If that were true, the signal would also have featured something capable of reaching them anywhere in the galaxy... Maybe Lyla has an implanted Quantum-Entangled communicator?

Okay, we're here… I come to a halt, staring around, eyes darting from place to place as I try and spot whatever it was that made that noise. Ghia'ta's scanning, but there are only a few local people around and… I don't think any of them are Lyla in disguise. If I can-.

There!
Maybe he needs to scan for the odd one out... There has to be something that would give Lyla away.

Great. But unless you plan to spend hours scanning every surface in a slow spiral over the course of subjective hours, that's not going to be helpful...

"Found it. She's not here. And it doesn't look like she only just ran off. Ghia'ta, are there any cameras around here?"

Her eyes flicker. "Not close to here."
So this location was picked for privacy. But was it a 'come here' signal for Lyla, or a distraction for any other kryptonian? The fact it's kryptonian tech is significant, but the Dominator forces do seem to have some of it handy.

Superman nods. "Okay. Stay there for now in case someone else turns up."

I nod. I can still see the Dominion ships from here, and Ghia'ta can move us faster than light if normal flying isn't fast enough. I-.
There must be something behind all this. Some kind of plan to discern...

Huh.

I press the crystal again, triggering the sound burst-
That can't be pleasant.

"Match?"

-and it's…

"It's not a continuous tone. But I can't make it out. I don't think it's words, and I don't have any way to-." I look at Ghia'ta's ring. "Ghia'ta, can you check it out for me?"
Ah, well done, Mitchell! That could crack the play.

Better make sure the terminal she uses is protected, it could be a virus.

That can't be coincidental. I have the feeling them taking it to the ship is exactly what someone wants. Hopefully Karsta will be properly paranoid about it and keep it isolated from the ships network, because something else that's 'a series of pulses' is binary code. I wouldn't put it past the Dominators to try and hack the Doomsday...

My understanding is that the only reference to Heroes in Crisis is having some of the heroes attend therapy. This is technically following the lead of Heroes in Crisis but it is not including the disturbing and idiotic aspects of that series.

They literally mentionned the Sanctuary facility at the end. Heroes In Crisis is where it came from. And even then, taking cues from that story is a pretty ballsy move on the writers' part, because again, Heroes In Crisis is one of the most hated and badly written comic book events in recent memory.

What are you talking about? They temporarily teamed up with Klarion to fight another invading Chaos Lord (Child and Flaw). This is after the story arc starts with them fighting and is very clearly out of desperation. There was nothing like him being forgiven or joining the Team.

Yes, I know it was a desperation thing, but while they get annoyed about it at first, but they still seem far more willing to trust him than they should have, and they treat him much better than what you'd expect by comparison.

To be fair, in-universe, Klarion's two worlds thing had zero casualties aside from Zatara becoming Nabu's host.

Regardless of how dumb it is, its true.

Where was that stated?

YJ Black Canary is supposed to be a qualified councillor. While it is a departure from the traditional takes on the character, Dinah 16 is qualified in-universe.

Really? Because I do not recall the show showing us her credentials, and she doesn't seem that different from other versions of Black Canary we've seen so far.

"Themyscira. I've learned how to keep people out of my mind, and I'm deeply connected to the violet light."

How deeply are we talking about here? Is she on the verge of achieving Violent Enlightenment? Considering that she's been using the Violet Light for a few millenia, I'd assume that she's got a far better chance at achieving it than anyone else we've seen in the story so far.

And to a race like the Zamarons, that must seem like an unspeakable atrocity...

Well, maybe not all of them.

I don't think she's involved here, but wasn't there one Zamaron who joined the Red Lantern Corps? Talk about a nonconformist.

If this was Earth, I would have asked if Jimmy Olsen were around... But this has to be significant. A signal to attract the Dominators to her location? Or her to theirs.

Don't underestimate Jimmy's unique talent for attracting weirdness. The guy practically wrote the book on attracting all kinds of weird, supernatural nonsense. He's like a living magnet/nexus for weird shit, and I could definitely see him somehow finding a way to get to this planet at the exact moment when everyone was looking for Lyla and the Dominators.

Heck, they might have even found him first.

It seems a bit odd of them to assume anything they're experiencing is real given what already happened.

Fair point, but what else are they supposed to do? Sure, they're taking a risk, but standing around and doing nothing won't solve the issue either. They have to do something, at least.

I was worried that no one would get that. Thank you for defying my expectations.
It is entirely self-explanatory.
The problem i have is that Google doesn't seem to acknowledge the concept exists, so my only immediate source is this very chapter.
It's difficult to discuss a thing without comparitives.

"Oh yes. The usually prefer using mercenaries to sending their own ships."
'They'
"Match to everyone. I just heard an ultra-high frequency sound and I'm heading towards it's source now."
'its'
I look closer. I can see fingerprints, so I guess I know what her real fingers look like now. But… She's not here.

"Found it. She's not here. And it doesn't look like she only just ran off. Ghia'ta, are there any camera around here?"
'cameras'

Do the empireth not have telekinesis? Because my first thought was that if she's a general psychic she could've used very skilful telekinesis to replicate someone else's fingerprints on the device. I doubt that happened even if she is a telekine because she hasn't displayed any skill with it up to now, I'm just curious.

I would say it's only self-explanatory if you have a certain level of familiarity with sci-fi. I think most people reading this do, but it wouldn't surprise me if some readers lack that familiarity and thus were confused.
