With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Do any of these heroes have a recurring villain? A nemesis? Toyman has likely encountered the most supervillains or equivalents out of the new team members. I'm concerned that somewhere, somehow there's a risk that isn't being addressed right now, because the Team's veterans are being pulled in too many directions.

She shakes her head. "My costume -and Dad's- helps a bit, and… Apparently-" She looks at me. "-Doctor Mist is one of my ancestors. And everyone descended from him can handle a bit more raw magic than most people."

"He…" Roy carries on looking blank. "Ah…"

She rolls her eyes. "It was over a hundred generations ago. Of course I don't look like him."

M'gann frowns. "How big is the difference?"

Zatanna looks a little awkward. "Well, it's… Hard to measure it exactly-."

"About two hundred times more raw power, untrained homo magi to random peon. About fifty times more raw power, slightly experienced homo magi to minor street magician. About twenty times more raw power, veteran homo magi to a lifelong magic junkie like John Constantine."

Wallace nods. "So they start stronger, and a regular guy can't ever catch up."

What level would he be?

Expanded Metaphysique (100 CP) Magic requires power. Some mages sacrifice a chicken or other people for a boost; some people bargain power from arcane lifeforms like Demons, Angels, or gods. Some people, like John Constantine, get by on cleverness to sidestep a lack of power. However, simply practicing magic slowly expands the strength of your soul, much like weightlifting will expand the strength of your muscles. This grants a three-fold increase in the strength of your soul and magic, enough to take a completely untrained novice to the level of an adult Atlantean mage of average talent. This may be purchased five times, each purchase linearly increasing your power (3x, 6x, 9x, 12x, 15x). Only the first purchase is free for Mages, with all subsequent purchases being 50% off instead.

1 x200 =200
Y x50 = 250, so y=5
Z x20 = 400, so Z=20.

1, Y and Z can be multiplied by any higher number, but the ratios are the same. Still, X 3 is under 'minor street magicians,' which is 5 assuming that 1 remains the baseline. So probably a bit less than average Atlantean mages (who use magic in their day to day life and for their careers) with one purchase… and if you buy in jumpchain up to the full 15, you have less power than John Constantine pre-Lordification, and much less power than Zatanna (or, heavens forbid, Dr Mist).

The real benefit of that perk is to buy it while also having a perk share/teaching perk, so you can give it to Zatanna/John Constantine/Dr Mist… which makes it less useful for a first jump.

Unless, of course, multiplying your metaphysique's strength also multiplies your efficacy, or the boost remains static as you grow, granting greater and greater power as your base strength improves. Which… fits Jumpchain.

"…wasn't all that happy about it, but the C.I.A. has to spend all that drug money on something."

I'm grinning as I copy her design onto the floor. I probably shouldn't be, but when it comes to ways to monetise a superpower…
Ah, making magical doodads for the American government? Probably more in the 'diagnostic tool' field than anything, I hope. Although personal defensive items also have a market, I suppose.

"And they don't need to be recharged?"

"Of course they need to be recharged. Service fees are where the real money is." She sighs. "Of course, it's kinda pointless now. How long 'til the economy gets fixed?"
Oooh, evil plan, Zee.

"Depending on how you define 'fixed', a year."

She looks mildly disconcerted. "Really?"
Optimistic, really.

"After a year, the food supply will have demonstrably been fixed. Fuel should be, too. And that's it. We'll basically be waiting for people to start doing things for themselves again, and if it-. I mean, it should be happening by then. Assume there aren't any more shocks."
Sadly, I suspect more shocks to the culture are in store.

Her eyes narrow slightly. "'And if it' what?"

I exhale through my nose. "If it hasn't happened by then, then it isn't going to. Something in our civilisation is fundamentally broken, and I'm not really sure what we do about it." I hold up my hands and wave them apart and together a few times. "But I'm pretty sure that isn't going to happen. Ah, good idea, selling enchanted objects."
You'd think the Smiling fellow would want things back to normal as fast as possible for optimum exploitation.

"It's a living. Or it was."

"Are you still doing the stage shows?"

"That's the plan. Of course, we're not doing them right now. Other than the occasional impromptu show, anyway. There's just too much to do, and I don't think people would really enjoy it."
The joy of what is effectively a post-war world.

I nod. "And how are things with your new students?"

She snorts. "Now I know exactly how Sephtian felt when I showed him how I use magic."
He had quite the headache when he tried to work out how her talking backwards could produce spell effects, didn't he?

"Oh?"

"Tim isn't actually all that powerful. Everything I've been able to do to measure his raw magical force and stamina tells me that he's doing okay for someone who just started learning magic… He's only about as powerful as La'gaan."
For now. I bet his future glory will be because he isn't pinned down to one magical tradition.

I frowns. "Ah… That.. doesn't match-."

She exhales heavily. "I know. And that's because somehow he's got a… Thaumic… Presence that's way more powerful than it should be. He can do the things he does not because he's super-powerful but because he's doing things for a fraction of the… Effort it should take."
Ah, I see. He's got the metaphysical equivalent of Final Fantasy X's 'One MP Cost' ability. Doesn't matter what he casts, it always 'costs' him the same negligible amount?

"Like you with talking backwards."

"Actually, no. It takes me the same amount of effort that it takes a classically trained Atlantean, I just got to bypass learning how to cast spells the normal way and a boost in my starting power. He's… I don't know. I can't think of anything quite like it, and I've looked. I've got him doing normal starting exercises because he does actually need to build up his metaphysique to do anything that doesn't involve summoning his friends."
Ah, gotta build up his skill before he can break out the top-level stuff instead of repeatedly using 'Phone a magical friend.'

"Is-?"

"And you remember how I couldn't get any information about where you come from using magic?"

I nod. "Yes."
Quite the headache of her own when she tried to raid Destiny's Book for anything about him.

"He's even worse. Everything I do gives a different results. I couldn't even be sure that his dad is his dad when he was in the same room. I mean, I know for you that the universe doesn't know what to make of you because your original universe doesn't quite fit, but with him it's almost like…"
So it's like someone has put some manner of obfuscation on him. Could even have been his future self, depending on methods.

She trails off, shaking her head and shrugging.

"Is any of that a problem for him?"
If it hasn't been so far, probably not?

"It means I'm not sure what he'll be able to do, but… I can probably work around it."

"And Toyman?"
I suspect the answer to 'what can he do' will eventually be 'Yes.'

"I'm just having him do physical exercise. I think his parents basically kept him shut up in a workshop for years. I can relate, but if he's going to be a superhero he's going to have to build some muscle." I nod. "How about you?"

"I think I have adequate muscle?"
And with his Ring, he always has the optimum amount of muscle for his self-image.

I flex my arms, which doesn't really show through my armour.

Zatanna chuckles. "No. I mean, your students."
Argent isn't really built for strength, while the Face... Who knows what his Un-Man physiology is capable of?

"To be blunt, neither of them have the potential that yours do. Argent has most utility-."

"How are you making them better?"
Oh, right. Well, one option would be armour. Even if it would look odd on the Face, walking around shirtless isn't particularly viable.

"Field work. That way I can see how they react to the sort of situations we're training them to deal with, and we can all see what they need to learn in order to get better. Based on what I've seen so far, Face could do with the sort of training actual police officers get. He's got the experience from working security in Aberrance but I get the impression that his boss just wanted to have a metahuman on staff."
At the least, it'll cover his ass legally in some cases of application of force.

"I can't imagine not having a head. What's he like?"

"Sociable enough. Enthusiastic about improving. Reasonable policing-related people skills from his work in Aberrance. He's level head-."

Zatanna gives me a look.
Yeah, if you finished that pun, you'd be walking around with a donkey tail for a day or two, I suspect.

"He's not excitable. Haven't seen how he worked under combat pressure yet."

"How about Argent?"
Argent is a teenage girl. It's going to be very important to get her to train combat instincts other than 'scream and run' or 'shield self then run.'

"I'm going to need to work with her on shielding different things. Try and get her to make constructs faster. Since she has school and is.. probably going to want to get a job at some point, I can't really pick anything too time-intensive."

"Where does her power actually come from?"
Heh. Now that is the million-dollar question, isn't it?

"I can't tell. She definitely underwent a… Form of novel genetic expression. I have no idea what her genes looked like before the Anti-Life broadcast, but there are substantial nonhuman segments in her D.N.A. now."

"Nonhuman? She's an alien?"
Technically? The comics version has artificial genetic infusions courtesy of the H'san Natall. Whether they'll be coming back for her and her fellow hybrids remains to be seen...

"No, I mean, not found in normal humans. Metahuman genetics usually read as weird nonsense. I couldn't even tell you why her skin's shiny. I managed to take a tissue sample; it changes back the moment it's removed. She might even be able to learn to control it."

I look down at the floor.
So the silver skin is part of her powers, rather than purely biological? Interesting. An innate skin-tight field she can't control yet, perhaps.

"How's it coming?"

"Erehw did eht latsyrc emoc morf!"
Right, then. Let's see if she can brute-force the matter.

A puff of must rises off the diagram, air whistling around the design before the pressure equalises.

"Wohs em erehw!"
Preferably with a globe showing country, city and even street address, is possible. 😄

The room… Shakes faintly, and then Zatanna's eyes glow gold.

"Are you alright?"
Looks like there was some measure of resistance she just broke through.

She blinks, and the light fades. And then she smiles.

"I think we're got them."
Assuming they didn't detect her scrying them and promptly pack up shop and leave before they arrive.

Somehow, I doubt the Illuminati are still at the place the crystals came from if they have any sense. And the gents are paranoid enough to ensure their facilities are probably quite displaced from each other. But this should at least give them a clue they can follow. Now, whether to call in anyone before they dash off and whether they should bring any rookies along... 🤔

Unrelated to the above comments:

Hey, so question: since an Ask Greg from S4 confirmed Dinah 16 is an actual qualified therapist (not sure if an earlier Ask Greg mentioned this fact) would that make Paulphidian's call out of her a case of Hilarious in Hindsight or Harsher in Hindsight; since it means that retroactively she was qualified?
Forgot about this. I have added a line under outdated by canon in the trivia page.

Perhaps she received her training and certification after S1, because (while she was able to talk to them and help them) she wanted better tools, or found that she enjoyed being a therapist?

Did she actually practice?

Greg at leaat confirmed being a therapist is her job in addition to running a flower shop.

Zatanna also gave that one bus driver (lobg story, Klarion sent a bus full of kids through time) Dinah's card, so she is a practicing therapist in the show.

She also counsels Zatara after he was freed from Nabu.

Don't forget her helping Gar during his depression arc.

Perhaps she received her training and certification after S1, because (while she was able to talk to them and help them) she wanted better tools, or found that she enjoyed being a therapist?

That could work for WTR Dinah. Although I admit, I find the idea of Paragon being baffled that she was qualified this whole time more funny.

Only two more things come to mind for the Outdated by Canon entry:
That would be hilarious. She might just be waiting to bring it up at the perfect occation.

Or it was an offscreen revelation Paul had, like how they got Demon Nabu removed offscreen (or maybe she was qualified, but Guy simply had more experience... though with Dinah, at least she was a member of the League and they knew she could commit to the job).

Thank you.

I blink, Ambassador G'Kar peering at me curiously. He maintains eye contact for a moment, and then leans back. "Ah. I see you're back with me."

G'Nun?

"Yes. I'm… Sorry, I appear to.. have some.. time loss. What just happened?"

"Oh, we were having a fascinating discussion on the resistance activities of narn 'guest workers'." He shakes his head. "I admit, I was wholly ignorant of their contribution to the liberation struggle. And I will ensure that G'Nun's testimony is entered into our historical archive."

I smile. "Thank you, Ambassador. I'm sure that would have meant a great deal-."

"But I was surprised-" He waves his right forefinger at me. "-to suddenly find myself sitting across from him. For a moment I thought that it was a hologram of some sort, but while you speak our language very well, there are phrases that a native speaker would use which you do not."

"Ah."

Thanks a lot, G'Nun.

"I.. see that you're not wearing the badge of the human Psi Corps. And even if you were an unregulated human telepath, since I knew nothing of the subject you could not have been learning about it from my mind." He sits back in his chair. "This makes me extremely curious."

"It would make most people extremely curious."

I… Think he's frowning. Narns don't appear to have particularly mobile faces.

"I was sitting in this room, with a dead man."

"A.I. chatbots can be remarkably realistic."

"Then, was his story invented? Because if so then I would have to withdraw my offer. I cannot shame my people's martyrs by turning their history into a work of fiction."

"No."

"So… Will you answer, or shall I simply continue to guess?"

"I'd rather you didn't."

"Mm." He shrugs. "My door isn't locked. You can leave."

"Yes."

"But you won't. Because this matters to you. More than concealing whatever that was."

"I didn't actually know that could happen. If I had, I would have been a good deal more circumspect."

He nods, eyes averted as he thinks-. Something occurs to him.

"Aah. Were you aware that a soul hunter vessel is currently docked with the station?"

I shake my head. "I don't know what a soul hunter is."

"No, I suppose you wouldn't. As far as I know, they've never had any contact with your species. But the rest of us usually take their presence as an ill-omen."

"And why would that be?"

"They claim that they collect the souls of the dead-." He smiles. "Ah. I'm getting warmer."

"Could you describe them?"

"Their faces look somewhat like human faces, the tops of their heads look like the top of my people's heads, just without the spots. They also have a small raised area in the middle of their forehead. No?" I shake my head. "Hm. As I was saying, they collect the souls of the dead whom they consider 'special' or 'significant', and store them in great reliquaries."

Ah. That's what that was.

"Humans may not care, but the populations of the other species on the station are in a state of uproar. Ambassador Delenn in particular is waxing wroth."

"Ah."

"But no soul hunter has been seen. Truly, a mystery-."

"Okay fine, I'll tell you."

"Are you sure?" He raises his eye ridges. "I was having fun planning my next avenue of questioning."

"Yes, I found a reliquary. I made a deal with the trapped souls. I help them, they help me. I didn't see a soul hunter while I was there, but I… Guess that I should ditch the ship."

"The narn government would be interested in acquiring such a ship. We know little of their capabilities, but I suspect that at least some of their systems are superior to ours."

Hm. I don't really need a ship. And apparently this one stands out…

"What's the smallest jump-capable narn ship?"

"Oh, that would be the T'Loth-class Heavy Cruiser. They're outmoded as front line warships and we have made sales of our decommissioned vessels to friendly governments… But I suspect they'd be a little large for your personal use."

Yeah. With a power ring, I don't really need a jump-capable ship… But having something I could live in would be helpful. But I've learned that unlike in Star Trek, faster than light drives are all pretty big here. And energy shields are basically unheard of. So really, an out of date heavy cruiser would probably be a liability even if I could make it work.

"Alright, sure. Make me a good offer and let me know where you want it dropped off. I suspect that Earthforce would rather it left their station as quickly as possible."

He smiles. "Would you like payment in cash or part exchange?"

"Cash and exchange. It's got the location of the reliquary in its navigation database."

"What are you looking for?"

"Something that one person can control and live in for a few weeks without feeling too cramped. And can handle hyperspace travel, obviously."

He nods. "We have a few vessels which fit that description. Centauri pleasure yachts that were left behind when they fled our homeworld. I think there was a plan to use them for intelligence gathering, but nothing ever came of it. Some were stripped for parts, but our own shipyards are more than capable for supplying our needs these days."

"I assume that their original owners aren't likely to complain?"

His smile takes a sinister edge. "No."

"Then that sounds good. I'm sure that your people will want to take a look at the ship before confirming a price, and I'll want to see the yachts…"

"I will arrange matters. My assistant will be in touch."

"Thank you, Your Excellency. And G'Nun's personal account?"

"A dead hero of the liberation sat before me and recounted his testimony. I can hardly dispute it. Though I… Do have one last question."

"Yes?"

"Were there any souls from others of my people?"

"There… They weren't labelled. Give me a moment."

Any other narns in here?

There's a moment of silence.

Yes. But now is not my time.

"One, but they don't want anything."

"Very well." G'Kar nods. "Be sure to let me know if that situation changes."

What a curious "ability." I wonder how combat and injuries would affect that altered state.

I'm surprised that Paul didn't ask to be put in contact with other ambassadors. Even if other souls have more long-term desires, having established credentials and leave to operate in their space would be damn useful. Get himself recognized as "Speaker for the Dead", mask any manifestation of the ring's Glow as the Soul Hunter tech / side-effect - all those sound like a good idea.

Narn getting an intact Soul Hunter ship in pristine condition to reverse engineer may lead to consequences. Soul Hunters may not be First Ones, but they aren't a young race either. Middle leaning towards old, I think? Anyway, they are quite advanced. And soul technology is linked to telepathic technology, as I understand it.

What can telepaths in Babylon 5 do anyway? Do soul hunters use telepathy? I haven't watched the show and the wiki doesn't have much info. Definitely seems interesting tho.

Thank you.

I blink, Ambassador G'Kar peering at me curiously. He maintains eye contact for a moment, and then leans back. "Ah. I see you're back with me."
So, then. I see Alt!Paul had no issue seeing G'Kar and said his piece. ...And then G'Nun said his piece, evidently. Interesting that Alt!Paul blanked out while G'Nun was present, though. Wonder how it looked.

And apparently completing their 'quest' allows them to 'move on', as it were. I wonder if that reduces his available charging pool or not?

'Guest Workers'? I assume that's a euphemism for off-world slave labour. Which explains why their story hadn't been heard - none of them lived to tell it to a Narn in a position to return to their homeworld.

So the Ring made a full biological alteration while G'Nun was active? And that would be a way to catch out someone not accustomed to speaking a language. Not every idiom and meme is recorded in textbooks.

"Ah."

Thanks a lot, G'Nun.
I can just imagine him sniggering to himself as he faded away.

"I.. see that you're not wearing the badge of the human Psi Corps. And even if you were an unregulated human telepath, since I knew nothing of the subject you could not have been learning about it from my mind." He sits back in his chair. "This makes me extremely curious."
Yes, I suspect that's going to be a common reaction to this Paul. (Pity Saul is taken by the Indigo version. would make a pithy name easier. 'Speaker', perhaps?)

"It would make most people extremely curious."

I… Think he's frowning. Narns don't appear to have particularly mobile faces.
Hey, when you're working with 90's prosthetics... 😄

"I was sitting in this room, with a dead man."

"A.I. chatbots can be remarkably realistic."
Though I suspect that kind of thing is completely absent or the most part because they hadn't really become common back when the series was made...

"Then, was his story invented? Because if so then I would have to withdraw my offer. I cannot shame my people's martyrs by turning their history into a work of fiction."

"No."
The challenge of this meeting: Convincing G'Kar that the story was real and true. Ideally without exposing his sources.

"So… Will you answer, or shall I simply continue to guess?"

"I'd rather you didn't."
Mostly because the source of said information is something of an outside-context-problem.

"Mm." He shrugs. "My door isn't locked. You can leave."

"Yes."
Doesn't stop G'Kar having a couple of burly guards waiting outside to detain him for a bit, though.

"But you won't. Because this matters to you. More than concealing whatever that was."

"I didn't actually know that could happen. If I had, I would have been a good deal more circumspect."
At leas it didn't produce a whole Construct Lantern out of it. Seeing a Spectrum Construct would be very surprising for anyone on this setting, I bet.

He nods, eyes averted as he thinks-. Something occurs to him.

"Aah. Were you aware that a soul hunter vessel is currently docked with the station?"
Speaker's ship, I take it.

I shake my head. "I don't know what a soul hunter is."

"No, I suppose you wouldn't. As far as I know, they've never had any contact with your species. But the rest of us usually take their presence as an ill-omen."
With a name like 'Soul Hunters' I'm not surprised. It implies a measure of proactiveness about their operations.

"And why would that be?"

"They claim that they collect the souls of the dead-." He smiles. "Ah. I'm getting warmer."
...Ah, that would be the source of the 'souls' Speaker is carrying now.

Not the best image of them here, but they are very distinctive. Presumably their sites don't have statuary of them.

Ah. That's what that was.

"Humans may not care, but the populations of the other species on the station are in a state of uproar. Ambassador Delenn in particular is waxing wroth."
Given Minbari spirituality, I wouldn't be surprised if the Soul Hunters were seen as 'stealing Minbari souls from their rightful rebirth'.

"Ah."

"But no soul hunter has been seen. Truly, a mystery-."

"Okay fine, I'll tell you."
Yeah, it's a fair cop.

I'm sure G'Kar spotted that he didn't mention how he found the Reliquary in the first place.

"The narn government would be interested in acquiring such a ship. We know little of their capabilities, but I suspect that at least some of their systems are superior to ours."

Hm. I don't really need a ship. And apparently this one stands out…
Like a fricking hot-rod. Definitely worth changing up, since I doubt Speaker can easily manage Ring-based spaceflight just yet.

"What's the smallest jump-capable narn ship?"

"Oh, that would be the T'Loth-class Heavy Cruiser. They're outmoded as front line warships and we have made sales of our decommissioned vessels to friendly governments… But I suspect they'd be a little large for your personal use."
Not least the fact they probably need a fair-sized crew.

Though if he could learn to extend his Ring's shields around the ship, it would be even tougher.

And that is a significant piece of information for G'Kar. I imagine Soul Hunter Reliquary locations are highly desired.

"What are you looking for?"

"Something that one person can control and live in for a few weeks without feeling too cramped. And can handle hyperspace travel, obviously."
With the rest of his time being spent in the equivalent of hotels as he fulfils objectives for his passenger souls...

As long as it isn't suspicious that a human is cruising around in a Centauri ship. I'm guessing their papers are in order.

"I assume that their original owners aren't likely to complain?"

His smile takes a sinister edge. "No."
...Ah, spoils of war. So there might be a tiny chance of trouble down the line if a relative of his ships owner learns about him using it and objects.

"Then that sounds good. I'm sure that your people will want to take a look at the ship before confirming a price, and I'll want to see the yachts…"

"I will arrange matters. My assistant will be in touch."
As long as it doesn't get lost in imminent affairs.

"Thank you, Your Excellency. And G'Nun's personal account?"

"A dead hero of the liberation sat before me and recounted his testimony. I can hardly dispute it. Though I… Do have one last question."
Presumably his word will guarantee the veracity of said testimony.

"Yes?"

"Were there any souls from other of my people?"
Ah, he is a canny one. Might not be obvious that the Speaker is carrying them right now, since it's not like he has a bag full of Soul Hunter storage devices.

"There… They weren't labelled. Give me a moment."

Any other narns in here?
It'll be more interesting if there are any Minbari. That's going to be tricky to bring up.

There's a moment of silence.

Yes. But now is not my time.
...Interesting. Metaphorical quest conditions not right, eh?

"One, but they don't want anything."

"Very well." G'Kar nods. "Be sure to let me know if that situation changes."
Why do I get the feeling said Narn soul is waiting to meet a particular Centauri?

A quite efficacious meeting, it seems. G'Nun got what he wanted, Alt!Paul/'Speaker' will be getting a personal ship in trade for his stolen Soul Hunter craft and G'Kar gets quite the intelligence coup between said ship and its' navigational database. I expect actually sorting out the deal will still take a few days, meaning things are likely to go down while Speaker is here.

Oh, this chapter was a treat. G'Kar was one of the most favorite characters in the series to me, and you GOT him. Well done.

"But I was surprised-" He waves his right forefinger at me. "-to suddenly find myself sitting across from him. For a moment I thought that it was a hologram of some sort, but while you speak our language very well, there are phrases that a native speaker would use which you do not."

"Ah."

Yeah, G'Kar was always intelligent.

"Aah. Were you aware that a soul hunter vessel is currently docked with the station?"

I shake my head. "I don't know what a soul hunter is."

Alt!Paul about get an education, and the consequences thereof.

"Humans may not care, but the populations of the other species on the station are in a state of uproar. Ambassador Delenn in particular is waxing wroth."

"Ah."

She would. I'm actually surprised EVERYONE on the station isn't hearing her. After all, Minbari are one of the few people to make sure a Soul Hunter *failed* in their self-appointed duty to preserve noteworthy souls when they came for Dukhat's soul.

"The narn government would be interested in acquiring such a ship. We know little of their capabilities, but I suspect that at least some of their systems are superior to ours."

Hm. I don't really need a ship. And apparently this one stands out…

"What's the smallest jump-capable narn ship?"

If the Narn get anywhere with a Soul Hunter ship, this would be a huge leap for them.

"I assume that their original owners aren't likely to complain?"

His smile takes a sinister edge. "No."

No...no, they wouldn't be. (They're too busy being dead.)

Any other narns in here?

There's a moment of silence.

Yes. But now is not my time.

"One, but they don't want anything."

"Very well." G'Kar nods. "Be sure to let me know if that situation changes."

This is interesting, and making me very curious who they could be. It could be someone original...or for absolute shock value they could be G'Quan. I will admit it wouldn't be likely.

That is a marvelously done G'Kar. I could hear Andreas Katsulas' voice with every line, Well done,

With a name like 'Soul Hunters' I'm not surprised. It implies a measure of proactiveness about their operations.
It's been awhile (and I do appreciate GhostKing 666's checking up on my facts, as it has been awhile), but as I recall, they actually, despite their reputation, aren't as such. The Soul Hunters, or Shak Tot as the Minbari (note, Minbari, not Mimbari) call them, don't seek consent of the souls they collect, but they also don't, as a rule, kill people early; they just make sure they're in the area when an auspicious soul is in line to kick the bucket. The plot of the episode that introduced them was that one had decided to be "proactive", having been driven mad by his failure to collect the soul of Dukhat, the leader of the Minbari Gray Council whose death had kicked off the Earth-Minbari War, and thus started actively going out and killing people.

He made the mistake of trying to 'collect' Delenn, Sinclair turned the activated harvester on the Soul Hunter, and karma took its course.

Given Mimbari spirituality, I wouldn't be surprised if the Soul Hunters were seen as 'stealing Mimbari souls from their rightful rebirth'.
It's funny you should mention that...

...given that the underlying cause, as it were, of the entire series kicking off was the fact that for years the Minbari had observed a declining birth rate upon their population. During the Earth-Minbari War, which was an absolute curbstomp by the Minbari, they decided to capture a human pilot at the Battle of the Line to try to see why humans were so determined to resist when they couldn't possibly win. As it happened, the fighter they captured was Sinclair's, and as they were examining him the Triluminary, which Delenn had on her person, illuminated.

The Triluminary indicates the presence of a Minbari soul. This was taken to indicate that the cause of the declining birth rate was because Minbari souls were reincarnating as humans. Thus, by every metric that mattered, in attempting to genocide humanity the Minbari were breaking the single most important edict given to them by Valen, their most famous military and religious leader: 'Minbari do not kill Minbari'.

Whoops.

...and thus it was that the Minbari ships that were on the verge of shattering the EarthForce fleet and having a clear route to Earth all stopped firing and then, to a ship, surrendered. Refusing to ever explain why.

(The twist is that, as it's revealed over the course of the show, Valen, the Minbari Not Born Of Minbar...was Sinclair.)

As long as it isn't suspicious that a human is cruising around in a Centauri ship. I'm guessing their papers are in order.
Leaving aside the...history the Narn and Centauri have making it logical that ex-Centauri vessels captured by the Narn would be on the market, the Centauri were one of Earth's best friends in the early years; IIRC, they were literally Earth's First Contact, and they were one of the few nations still actively openly trading with Earth - at sky-high prices, of course - during the Earth-Minbari War. Londo was the ambassador who tried to warn off Earth from contacting the Minbari, even: "Ah, arrogance and stupidity in the same package. How efficent." So a human in a Centarui yacht might be seen as unusual, but likely not too much more so than, say, an American driving a 1990s Nissan Skyline around is: "Huh. Neat."

Huh. I was going to say that speaking to important officials like ambassadors isn't that easy, then I remembered that religious couple who spoke to every ambassador within a day when they were trying to prevent Dr. Franklin treating their son. In this case the SI was trying to keep his abilities secret and so didn't want to come under that sort of scrutiny.
Yes, the problem there is probably that the Soul Hunters are too advanced,. and narns have literally no telepaths.
Me said:
here any souls from others of my people
Thank me, corrected.

"The narn government would be interested in acquiring such a ship. We know little of their capabilities, but I suspect that at least some of their systems are superior to ours."
Considering how old the Soul Hunters are as a space fairing civilization(over a millennia at least) every single part of that ship is undoubtedly more advanced than anything the Narn have, even the metallurgy and materials it's made from.

The Narn... are not the most advanced race in the setting. Even with them having spent the 2230s and 2240s designing and switching over to 2nd generation* starship designs like the G'Quan, Bin'Tak, Frazi heavy fighter and others, they are still only a rough peer of the Earth Alliance(which is itself in the process of switching to 3rd generation starship designs like the Omega Destroyer, Poseidon Super Carrier, Warlock Destroyer, Apollo class Bombardment Cruiser, Chronos Class Frigate, Delphi Class Scout and Thunderbolt Starfuries).

*Two reasons why the Narn were so aggressive and belligerent in the early seasons. One was how passive and appeasement focused Turhan was, the second reason was because the Narn truly and mistakenly thought their 2nd Generation fleet was a peer to the Centauri Royal Navy. Even without the damage from the Shadows attacking the Narn twice, the Narn-Centauri War would have only gone the way it did. Once the Centauri got over their shock from the invasion and regrouped, the Republic's superior industry, technology and numbers would turn the tide and push the Narns back over the border and then all the way to their homeworld.

The Centauri in fact have no issues selling their ships to other races. Money is money after all. That said, don't expect the publicly available model to have modern Centauri technology, to say nothing of how they will straight up remove the AG systems before putting the ship up for public sale in other star nations.

Yes, the problem there is probably that the Soul Hunters are too advanced,. and narns have literally no telepaths.
Also, not enough time. The Narn-Centauri War breaks out in just a couple of years and B5 is not a setting where reverse engineering advanced alien technology is a fast process(Shadow tech doesn't count, the EA had help putting that stuff into their ships). It could take anywhere from 20-30 years minimum before the Narn started seeing any returns from getting that ship.

If they even could, Narn R&D was already starting to suffer from the fact most of their technology was reversed engineered from old Centauri technology and improving upon it was being hampered by their lack of equivalent understanding(modern Narn make great engineers, not so much great physicists). A problem that is exacerbated by the Kha'Ri's preference for funding research projects with quick returns over deeper theoretical research.

I get yhat it's hard to get in contact with the ambassadors, which is why Paul would go through G'kar, using him to arrange the meetings.

As to scrutiny - on one hand that's understandable, while on the other, if Paul is committed to putting those souls to rest, he's going to have to operate innthe alien territories. Barring vorlon-backed lantern authority to do so, talking to the ambassadors is pretty much the most logical first step.

Exactly. As far as I remember, narns are somewhat obsessed with getting telepaths of their own, including buying alien telepathic dna and such. Having the soul hunter tech, if those are related, might help.

On the "too advanced" problem, just remember the omega destroyers. Humans are less advanced than the narn, while shadows are more advanced than soul hunters. Some manner of reverse engineering is likely to happen, and will probably make the coming narn-centauri war more bloody.

Paul should also make sure there are no tracking devices on his new ship.
